Absolutely! It's so weird to think that an "empty" space is bad. I see it as an opportunity to live more: Host dinners, play with my pet, less things to clean, not go against furniture all the time 😅
I didn't find her that frugal at all, lot are common sense, it's basically the life of every low income citizens. She is still getting best quality foods and travelling. It's sad rich people live a simple life is being called frugal and poor people minimalist everyday trying to live is being ignored.
I live just like you do (and I have the same Blade Runner poster 😎). Being minimalist has nothing to do with deprivation or waste. On the contrary, if done with real awareness, it’s a liberation, it becomes a pleasure. Also it’s a psychological training, it’s like when you train your body running o doing fitness. You become stronger, more resilient, you need less, you are more free and independent.
Hi Bea, this is one of my favorite videos on frugality. It’s short and sweet and has everything one needs to know. It’s perfect. 😍🥰 I’m watching it for the second time already. I’m also doing a no buy year after several successful low-buy-years that I’ve done. I can’t wait to hear more about your experiences on the full no buy year. 😍
also your clothes last longer because not under intense artificial heat plus it's much more hygenic. I was always taught it is fresh air that kills bacteria on laundry.
Without dryer damage, I only buy 1 pair pants and new shirt per year. I have 4 pants, 10 shirts. I get a new used pair of quality sneakers at REI every other year. I would rather go surf fishing every month than have lots of clothes I won’t wear😂
I live a light, fulfilling, and peaceful life. I live in an apartment that has what makes me happy: a pool because I love sunbathing while reading a book, and a gym to keep me active and take care of my health. I know how to live with little, but I appreciate the good things in life. I live simply with what truly matters to me.
It’s so interesting to hear how it’s changed your perspective. Thanks for challenging us to think differently about money and spending-definitely got me thinking! 💰👀
As im iranian women we pushed and forced to be a frugal😅 . I am specialist sale/ outlet buyer 😂 . Just one thing i cant avoid to buy that and its book . And end of the year i want to end my buying book jurney after years( i cant listen to audio book or buy pdf unfortunantley) and i couldnt buy second hand clothes . But i have turned off wifi and lamp already when i dont use that
☺This video resonated so much with me! Your attitude and know how is so wonderful. A little tip I do that I'll happily share is a 'freezer stock bag'. To put it simply, any cut-off meat, bones, veggies that I know I won't be using (ex. half an onion after making a dish and only needing a half), carrots that are about to go off, etc etc, I put it in the freezer, and when the bag is full, I make stock out of it, thus getting a bit of extra out of what may have been wasted. I've been doing this for years now and it makes even leftover veg exciting, because I know it'll make good stock. I do wonder about the dishwasher though. I have one where I'm renting but I never use it, since it's just me. People keep saying it's more cost effective, however for a mug, a pot and a few pieces of cutlery I still think washing them by hand is more cost effective. Uses only water and a bit of elbow grease instead of too much water and electricity on top of it. Another thing I agree with is spending more on quality items, instead of whatever is cheapest. I've spent over £100 on Birkenstock brand shoes, that I KNOW will last me many many years, instead of buying £20 Rocketdog imitation boots, and then.. having to spend another £20 after a month or two because of inferior quality.. and then two months on another £20 and..... you see where this is going. Really glad to have found your channel! Subscribed! Thank you for the video!
Thank you so much for the nice comment and sharing your experience. 🤗 I forgot to mention that I only start a wash on the machine ONLY WHEN it is full. This goes for clothes but also for dishes. If it is just a spoon or a dish, I hand wash :)
This is a big one but my husband and I only have one child. We also decided to buy a significantly smaller home (hence smaller mortgage) so we could pay off the mortgage quickly and be debt free ❤
I think there should be a balance in life, not too frugal not too extravagant. Being too frugal might sometimes irritate people around you. I remember living with a housemate being too frugal on utility bills and I alomost froze to death in the winter of that year. Other bad habbit of frugal people is buying secondhand clothing which I never consider doing so. How much would it cost to buy a new pair? Respect your body above anything else!
You’re eyeliner is a great example. I used to buy before things actually ran out. I stopped doing that earlier this month and it’s challenging to say the least.
Stock up on groceries when they're on sale, and have a coupon. Buy the one that's the best price per unit. work out at home because I save gas. Combine trips; if I'm already out, and heading past the supermarket, I pick up my groceries for the week.
Same, I had the new 16 Pro max in the cart and all I had to do was click on confirm purchase. I told myself I don’t need it then I just closed the window 😅
I've learnt being frugal is great for savings ISAs and investing, but can be a curse, spend money on experiences and ways you can love and serve others and then more money will come your way, your intentions is everything.
My biggest outlay is having cable tv, internet and a landline. I have them all because I live alone so I need entertainment. The landline because it's part of my package but I use for incoming calls only and emergencies like if my mobile phone dies because my Mum is elderly and I call her every day to make sure she's ok. I don't buy much else except necessities like medication and groceries. Occasionally something I need like I just got a heated airer and a crockpot. To save on drying clothes and cooking cheap meals for one. I'm a recovering shopaholic so I'm also currently de-cluttering a lot of stuff.
Wow! That's amazing! For the average person that's already very frugal, coming from a recovering shopaholic that's even more impressive. Congratulations! You're doing a great job 👏
I buy mostly sale items and only buy regular-priced items if I really need them. I'm working on being financially independent so anything I can to save or earn money I will try. I discovered receipt jar this year & I've already uploaded enough receipts to redeem gift cards. Also love looking for adventures that cost me nothing. Every city has something to offer for free. You just have to be resourceful😉
Bea i think that you have very clever parents that taught you from a young age the value of hard work and the value of money and your time. My daughter is about to turn 10 and she has just spent ages with me this afternoon trying to figure out a monthly budget for her future adult self 😊. She budgeted €200 on food and I thought that it was too low 😮, but you are averaging €160!!!😮😮😮 So a meal plan and prep video would be amazing 😍, I will get my daughter to watch it with me. Beijinhos do Porto 😊
That's amazing! 10 years and already budgeting? 😮 That's incredible! 😍 She also also has an amazing parent! Thank you so much for sharing. Comments like this, make making videos worth it. Big hug for you and your daughter. Beijinhos 😘
I'm somewhere in between. I buy things from thrift stores and yard sales. I don't buy designer names but I do buy quality. I don't buy junk or gadgets. I usually buy what foods are all sale then plan my meals around them.
with regards the "no buy month" can i buy sausages ? I regard sausages as an essential . In fact i will only buy 4 things - sausages , bread , vodka and cigarettes . Thank you for your help.
I live the same way. However not sure your parents did such a great job with the points system. Also since you need therapy sessions. I want to try and teach my son to love doing necessary chores, not doing them for points.
In fairness you look too mean to eat, what are you intending to do with all the money you save? You can’t take it with you, I know a man that never got married worked a basic wage job and never spent money only in food and when he retired he got cancer and died a year after retirement, he left 3 million after him for his relatives to spend. I’m not a big spender but you need to balance things out no point in letting someone else spend your life savings especially when you live in misery.
Did you listen to the full video? Yes, "frugal" living is a balance, but she described intentional living, managing expenses, time, health to better line up with life goals. She wanted to be able to work less hours, and spend more on experiences and trips. She didn't want the clutter from spending without thought, and stuff collecting dust. There can be health benefits to eating more at home. Much prepared/processed food (restaurants and some grocery store food choices) have health considerations (high salt, fat, calories, additives, portions, etc.). She may be more extreme than some, opting for no car, and purchases of used clothing... but life is a balance. She didn't explain her entire financial situation and goals. What she described, defining some life goals, having an emergency fund, being intentional and conservative about purchases, avoiding debt, saving for trips, being able to limit work hours, avoiding unnecessary spending... choices more people should consider ? We hear about too many people carrying large credit card balances, driving cars and living in homes they can't afford, buying expensive "toys" to keep up with the Joneses, and living paycheck to paycheck, one small life event from bankruptcy - even too many 6 figure earners... Which is preferable? (Your comment, "too mean to eat" really? ) fyi - ua-cam.com/video/CB042nkrtZQ/v-deo.html gives more perspective. She's keeping some expenses to a minimum. A little extreme in some areas but not cutting out everything - has trips and some eating out and drinking, etc. Hard to tell how this compares to the norm where she lives in Portugal or what her income vs expenses are, but she did show an expense budget.
Yeah exactly 💯 one thing I'll never skin-tight on is high quality food, u will neverrrr catch me eating frozen non nutritional pizza etc! Food and juicing is LIFE! everything else dun matter
I wouldn't care too much about what other people think as long as I know I'm acting according to my principles and values. And there's nothing wrong with saving 😊 you do you !
This lifestyle requires patience and discipline, and the money I've saved and resources I've built have financially gained me 20/25 years on my contemporaries. There is no downside to this approach.
Great advice on saving money and completely respect your way of living, however there needs to be a balance. I'm not saying you do this but just in general, I've known people who lived frugally their whole lives at the expense of missing out on experiences such as travel/nice food etc and then died and left large sums of money in the bank to go to the tax man or family members who blow it on rubbish. Yes don't spend for the sake of it but if you see a nice piece of clothing or a new gadget etc, as long as it's not at the expense of paying your bills and putting yourself in financial hardship, just treat yourself! Life is short.
Yes, to everything but ot the tap water ! It contains lots of chemicals and junks that are not good for our body and our health . We could spend on a great water filter and enjoy clean water for a long time 🎉🎉
It’s rare nowadays to find girls who adopt a frugal lifestyle, as they are unfortunately too obsessed with material things. They often label people who choose this way of life as "cheap"! That said, to my surprise, I met a German girl during my trip in Miami, and she told me she was frugal! Too bad I live in Canada. Thanks Bea !
Yes!
Don't think I'll ever qualify as a minimalist or frugal but all the things mentioned here are just ... reasonable? I do most of them instinctively already, like I usually keep one backup (no more than that usually) of non perishable products (toiletries, cleaning products...) but especially for food that expires fast or veggies I am careful to buy only what I am sure will be cooked and eaten. I splurge on makeup (something I always enjoyed) but clothes, shoes, bags I rarely buy, often wear hand me downs form a cousin. No drier, careful with the lights and such. It's just sensible small things that in the end help saving money.
You can only save the money you spend, but there is no limit on the money you can earn. Putting this much thought and effort into your growth opportunities would net you much better savings.
pretty good advice with examples. i'm aiming towards something like this, though i do find myself occasionally splurging on something out of FOMO. i fully agree with spending money on health (therapy, clean eating, sports, etc.) and learning, i'm also constantly taking classes and trying to improve in this aspect. money spent on these two is never wasted.
All these saving "tasks", don't take into account opportunity cost. So it gives you the impression of saving, but in reality if you used the same amount of time and mental energy to find ways to generate more income you would end up way wealthier, and also more free. As you would have the cash to pay other people to do a lot of time-sucking chores and even do your work for you. And it's also more scalable. While saving on a set income, you can save only so much.
I almost exclusively buy second hand, and vintage, and I love it! BUT, unlike you, I don't just shop when I need something, because I love beautiful things, and I can't have or wear something that is not to my taste. Buying second hand, you rarely find something you like when you need it, so I buy things when I find them. It's second hand/vintage anyways, so it's usually pretty cheap. I'm not a full-on minimalist like you, Bea, but I'm way more minimalist than most people, and am constantly trying to get rid of things. I've always wanted to be and feel lighter... and free. But I admit it, I love beautiful things, I love design, I love thrifting. Like you, I started unplugging appliances when I don't use them, including the wifi, about 2 years ago. It's an easy habit to develop. And it made me wonder why big appliances (oven, dishwasher, washer and dryer) don't have an easily accessible cord to unplug when we don't use them, next to the counter in the kitchen or something, with a little hook to hang it... why did nobody think about that?! Love your content!
That's very true about the appliances! Never though about it. Maybe you should try to sell that idea 😅🤭 When it comes to fashion and Design, I get it. Thrift shopping when you NEED to can be hard and frustrating. But when you do find it, it's very rewarding. And I think you're already doing a great job and should be proud of yourself! We don't need a couple of people doing sustainable practices perfectly. We need the hole world doing it imperfectly! 🤍
There is no reason to unplug washer, dryer or oven because these appliances are not using electricity when off. Maybe the clock is running on the oven but we thought one with no electric display. 🤷🏻♀️
I live in Norway and many people have made 'bare kast' (just throw out) their mantra. I live a very different life from you (in a fixer upper in the countryside, with four children and a small zoo) but I also love to live frugally. We never go out to dinner or for drinks, our tap water is the best anyway. We use second hand where we can and recycle or reuse whatever possible. Unfortunately the bus gets me nowhere, but I drive as little as possible and try to teach my children these values too. I would not want to live any other way....
Absolutely supermarket tips!!! Thank you!
Own less stuff, so you can live in a smaller place and save on rent or mortgage, plus of course you won’t spend money on excess stuff -it’s a win-win!

Supermarket tips please. I much prefer to line dry clothes, and hang it up in a way so the clothes dont need to be ironed
Exactly! Much less stress and work. 😳
also your clothes last longer because not under intense artificial heat plus it's much more hygenic. I was always taught it is fresh air that kills bacteria on laundry.
@@sunkat76 Heat kills bacteria. 99% are killed by temperatures above 70c. Fresh air is a myth.

That video has been on my mind for so long 🛒 happy to do it soon 🙏
Thank you for watching!
OMG YE! I agree
Agreed!
Hi! great video, thank you.. Yes, please share your groceries experience, thats interesting

I forgot to mention that I only start a wash on the machine ONLY WHEN it is full. This goes for clothes but also for dishes. If it is just a spoon or a dish, I hand wash :)
This is a big one but my husband and I only have one child. We also decided to buy a significantly smaller home (hence smaller mortgage) so we could pay off the mortgage quickly and be debt free ❤
Congratulations on living simply and being (or on your way of being) debt free ❤

I see you’re a fan of the bay. I feel like I literally cannot smell or taste bay leaves, do you actually notice a difference when you use them?
You should do background check on humana.
Learning everyday to live with needs not wants
Yes!
Beijinho 😘
I spend £20 a week on groceries. It is possible with bulk buying similar meals.
That's perfect! Guess we are both on the frugal side 😊
How much of one’s income should go for rent? I’m at about 35% which is good for the Bay Area.
The one thing missing from this video is the why. What is the metric of success? A larger bank account?
The difference between cheap and frugal: being cheap affects others, being frugal only affects yourself.
It's actually not good switching of/ unplugging the router for the device itself.

Would gladly be in a relationship with a woman that mostly thinks this way when it comes to finances.

Spoken like a true economist. Expenses minimization is in our control. Income generation, not so much.

Lolz I thought I was the only one reusing the foil ....I always wondered why people were throwing them off when you can wash them and reuse them ....
🙌 Welcome to the club 🙌

Maybe you should try to sell that idea 😅🤭
When it comes to fashion and Design, I get it. Thrift shopping when you NEED to can be hard and frustrating. But when you do find it, it's very rewarding.
And I think you're already doing a great job and should be proud of yourself!
We don't need a couple of people doing sustainable practices perfectly. We need the hole world doing it imperfectly! 🤍
My thoughts too.
There is no reason to unplug washer, dryer or oven because these appliances are not using electricity when off. Maybe the clock is running on the oven but we thought one with no electric display. 🤷🏻♀️

One of my trick to save money is to go to the supermarket only once a week. If I forgot some thing I will do without until the following week.
What do you say to cravings? No one would stop you from buying XYZ icecream or go back for something else..
That's quite beautiful! I love your actions and your simple lifestyle. So inspiring 🤍
I like also minimalism. So cool to watch your video. Empty apartment, less effort to clean. I liked it.
