Hey Erica. Love your videos, thank you so much. I just started watching them. Now im trying to find out would i like to make candles or not. I saw so many women's are closing down them business and thats just scared me. Like they say no one is buying, so they just waisted so much money unfortunately. Do you think it can be possible to live from candles or its more like second job? I saw you earning 20 k from candles. I think its not a lot. Am i right? And if im scare to go on UA-cam (my English) how can i advertise my candles? Is it enough to post on Instagram? Thank you so much for your help❤ you are amazing 👌🌹😊
A soap maker I follow says there are billions of people in the world and she can’t clean them all so why pit people against each other? I love that attitude because it allows for community
I love people like that. I’ve seen some UA-cam channels where the soap makers think they’re sharing but are instead just complaining about the risks of being copied. Paranoia doesn’t sit well with me.
I buy handmade items to build community. Not just a connection between me and them, but I want other small businesses to succeed and hope someone gives me the same consideration.
I’m a nail technician and I believe what you have said here can be encouragement and motivation for a lot of different types of small businesses... my dad owned and operated a small candle company as a side business in the years leading up to his death, and it was the most happy and fulfilled I ever remember seeing him. When he passed, I was too young to continue the business, but I remember the community coming together and being sure to purchase each and every last candle he had as a show of support. I’ve been following your channel and it is giving me that “itch” to bring back his candle company... I’ll sure have the equipment lol. Thanks for your channel, it’s really great information 💕
Sorry to hear about your dad passing when you were young. If you have the passion for it as your dad did then for sure give it a try. Or just keep doing what you enjoy the most with the same kind of happiness.
I always looked up to Yankee Candles and used to ask myself how I could compete with them and then I realized I did not have to. You're right in a way we are not competing with them but in another way we are. And I also realize that Yankee candles focuses on a factory model manufacturing one after the other exactly alike where every single one of my candles is unique. That makes me stand out against a giant of a candle company called Yankee and I can be something they can never be.... Unique with every creation.
I feel handmade and small businesses take more pride in their quality of product. I plan on launching my candle business next year and in the testing phase for quality and what I look for, love about candles and how mine can be better than large manufactured versions which I realize are low quality a lot of the time. I didn't realize it until I started learning about candles for my business.
Exactly. A certain big brand beginning with Y, and another one beginning with J; since they become big global brands, their quality sucks. Especially Y! I brought some of theirs to test when I first started out, and I was shocked at how poorl y made they are.
I remember hearing that your friends and family will probably never be the ones supporting your business mostly. When I told my friends and family how much I charged for my candles and they said "ohno that's too much for a candle" and that really affected how I looked at my market prospects. I think the hardest but most benefited thing would be turning off friends and families opinions on your business.
All those cheap candles your friends buy are buying poorly made soot ridden candles that often don't burn properly. A handmade candle will generally be far superior to those store bought factory made ones.
Let me tell you something to inspire you. I have a customer I feel sorry when I changed her $40 for a 4 oz face cream. She came back to me weeks after order more for her and her husband and told me “ don’t you ever lower the price on your products, I used to get my face lotion from La Mer. I couldn’t close my mouth for a while. You go ahead do well, built your own community and don’t ask any family member cause they aren’t the artisan
I too struggle with that concept and sometimes lack of confidence, like who would want to buy my stuff? Have to remind myself that none of us can compete with the big box stores. That's just how it is. But you are right, it's about building a community and encouraging people to shop small. In fact, I purchased some of your candles after watching a bunch of your videos and felt like, hey, I need to support her awesome small business!
Agree with all your points, I'd also like to add customer service generally. Contacting a big company to resolve an issue can take days or weeks even, most micro/small businesses usually get back to you within a day. Edited to add: Why buy from you? My candles aren't mass produced in China.
I love this video! I’m gonna have to save it and every time I feel stuck or on downside about the shop I can play this. It’s a lot of positivity that I feel like we all need. So thank you!
Ypu are inspiring me again Erica! I followed you through lockdown but lost my inspiration due to ill health. Here I am again and your content had come so far and your brand is so timeless and elegant. Thank you for the time you give xx
Hi Erica! I’ve been following you for a few years now and just wanted to say thank you for all you do. Started making candles for fun with my kids in 2021 for a fair and now make my own vessels. I appreciate you
Thank you so much for this video. It was very encouraging. It also cemented the fact that we should continue to forge ahead with the vision we have been given and focus on building a community.
I have to stop the video, yes yes and yes for education and communication and community. I am a chemist by college ,soap maker by heart. At the beginning I was retiro go big, now I love my customers and farmer markets. I love talking and educating them letting them know how long the candles and soaps take to cure and to bet better hot throw or why Aleppo soap needs an entire year to be ready or why the body butter needs to go through a freeze/ whip freeze whip several times to get fluffily and so on and on. I love that the lady at the doctors office recognizes me as the “soap lady”. The interactions and live feedbacks are just lovely , the messages on IG hey are you coming today to My place? I need my lotion please. And that keep us accountable because we know that there is a community counting on us wether is to get the lotion, the candle ,the handmade cake, purse , soap or bath bomb to relax after a long hard day at work. Handmade beings the personal touch that big corporations can’t provide Thank you Erika so well said
This has been heavy on my mind! When I talk with a lot of candle consumers (who buy at Target, Walmart, Anthropologie, etc.) most of them aren’t really even aware of the handmade candle niche so they don’t care as much about the handmade aspect of it…I guess I should be seeing that as my opportunity to educate though!
I love love all your videos they have helped me so much!! I have watched most of them all day trying to figure things out but i do have a question i have not come across any video on a question that lives in my brain lol when preparing for lets say a launch, how many candles is recommended to have in stock ? Hope you see mu comment and thank you for all you share with us!
Great video Erica! Notice that you have now 3 Digiboils, looks like it´s your top investment with the wax melters. Any feedback without taking too much of your time that you can give on owning 3 of these?
you got the digiboil's up on a block! it looks so good and organized :D what did you end up getting? just got my first digi and it's being delivered today!! so excited. would love your advice about how to raise it. Thank you!
You can compete with the multimillion-dollar companies if you show them how individually crafted candles are better than an all-in-one mass-produced solution.
Been getting bubbles in my candles and one of them the scent has completely gone.I also checked the bottle and the scent gone from there too not left in sunlight at all x
Hi, I'm starting furnishing a room for candle making. Do I basically need two tables: a high one (like a long bar table) for pouring while standing up; and a regular sit-down table for labelling and packing? Or is it easier to just do all the work standing up?
I agree with Amanda, it's whatever you prefer! Actually, I use table leg extenders so you are able to switch back and forth from a shorter or taller table whenever you want! amzn.to/3VJ90dT
@@MemoryBoxCandleCo Hello again, I just saw your helpful video on respirators and bought one, and wondered, do you also wear safety glasses or goggles? I don't know if I am being over-cautious about the wax, scent, etc particles in the air being an issue.
I have fallen in love with you. I'm a newbie I'm made 7 candles and I'm like why not sell them. The hardest part is thinking of a brand name. ugh.......
Not everybody wants the factory model for things they buy. There is some crossover and I probably do get some of Yankee's business but in essence I have a different target audience. My customers are more creative, artistic, and want a conversation piece and take pride in art more than the product itself and its function.
I'm not into 'personality marketing' (so long as you're a regular person, I'm fine. I don't need to know you or relate to you) I do buy from bathbody cause the scents are just good smelling ... but I still buy small business candles cause I like more veriaty of scents than just mass appeal. So I wont buy from you if you only stock generic smells, I like you're own unique spin :) Also, more mas label is just not making things of great quality.
I do think a small business candle companies as competition because they are. You need to be better and more unique than all of them to get more business. If you have a socialist view that you can share the wealth with your competitors they're going to eat your lunch. Business is a dog eat dog business no matter what kind of business it is. There are no friends just competitors and if you're more eager to make friends with your competitors you are not going to win.😅 Got to be tough to be the best!
Like the video and all your wonderful knowledge shared with us. You might want to put your hair in a ponytail in the future..very distracting watching and you keep playing with your hair..just a thought.
