    I appreciate your effort and natural talk , not sounding like a robot like other UA-camrs,seems like a normal conversation.
    Irix customer service is very slow,they reply but on 1 out of 5 emails as I contacted them many times in the past.
    It's a small company as far I'm understanding.
    About the DZO Pictor,your insights are very helpful ,I was about to buy the 20-55 to use it with my Blackmagic Ursa G2 and 6K's but I probably won't . I don't want to mess with mount changes, parfocal issues etc. Why they cannot send them with EF and optional PL as well? Won't make sense for such an expensive lens. Anyway,I will wait until they actually send it as an EF mount.
    I'll work with my Sigma 18-35 for now I guess.

    • @Moviesauce
      @Moviesauce  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Yeah, I prefer the vespid approach where you can order them as EF or PL but they will be interchangeable as well. You just buy the other mount (and I'm assuming shims) separately.

      Shame and it's a good optical lens for a great price, good looking and it seems solid build.
      Those things won't go together typically.
      Imagine that the majority of the cinema cameras (the one that people can actually buy) is EF mount and not PL.
      Well well. Who knows,maybe one day

    This was helpful, thanks. I appreciated your approach to the Rokinon vs Sigma Art debate a few years back as well, and am still working with my Sigma Arts. I'm definitely intrigued by both of these options. What is your opinion of the sharpness of the Irix 45mm vs the DZO Pictor Zoom 20-55 and the Sigma Art 18-35mm?
    Cheers.

    • @Moviesauce
      @Moviesauce  3 роки тому +3

      Just purely subjectively, I'd rank the Sigma the sharpest, the Pictors a close second, and the Irix last. They're all sharp, but the Sigma has that clinical super sharpness. The Pictors are sharp but have a bit more personality. The Irix is sharp, but I think because it's also the fastest lens of the three, in my head it feels a bit softer because it can go to 1.5. I suspect if you did a scientific comparison of the three they'd all still be on the "very sharp" end of the scale.

    From what I've seen so far, the Vespids seem like a very good affordable standard set. Good build quality, nice image quality, an overall good bang for the buck.
    I do like the Irix lenses as well, but they just seem like sort of "specialty" lenses to me. Three focal lengths to choose from, unusual ones at that? I don't know, I'd rather have a full set of more well-known focal lengths so I can finesse the shots a bit more. But maybe that's just me.

  • @JulioBHJ
    @JulioBHJ 3 роки тому +1

    Kind of an off-topic question, but do you plan on making a video explaining your Komodo rig setup? I noticed you're using the Tilta cage in combination with the Revolva, which is very interesting to me because I thought the Tilta top plate would protrude from the camera body just enough to not allow the Revolva disc to fit. Apparently it does fit, but I'd still like to see in more detail what kind of rig you built for yourself. So I do hope you can elaborate or show off a little more.

    • @Moviesauce

    What lens do you consider as the most universal (as for clients)? I've just bought Blackmagic 6 K PRO with 15 cine Irix for a backtage gimbal purpose, but I am really in love with DZO (that aesthetics, sterile and sharp style, nice separation, vintage look, but also with a little bit of chromatic abberation for atmosphere as well!), and considered Zooms or Vespids as well. I guess now is the time to decide. In terms of wide lenses, there is Tokina 11-20 mm, although it's a zoom. I'd like to shoot some home commercials (macro lens needed), but also some music clips etc. Also, which mount would you recommend? Should I buy EF now, when planning to buy Komodo in the future? I guess the long future, if my business take off :)
    Just to draft a price tag difference in my country: Irix cine are usually 1150 usd , DZO Vespids are 1750 usd per unit. When bought together, the price goes to 1550 usd per unit, but buiyng a whole set is a bit too much for a beginner. Considering that, what would you pick up?

    • @Moviesauce
      @Moviesauce  2 роки тому +1

      If you can only buy one lens, something like a 24-70 F2.8 or the amazing Canon RF 28-70 F2. Or start in the middle of a prime range and work your way out. A 35mm prime is a good all around lens. The sigma 24-35 F2 is a good all around lens too. Just depends on how soon you think you'll be adding more lenses and whether or not you want a full kit. I don't think I'd recommend the DZO zooms for the start of a kit. You could buy 4-5 really good primes and have more overall versatility. Just depends on what you shoot and what you like. There's no wrong answer. You'll adapt to whatever you have. We're in a golden age of lens options right now.

    • @Marta-nl1xe

      @@Moviesauce it can be a whole set, I was just asking for a brand to start with :) I can definitely get 3 prime Irix cines or 2 vespids for a price of Sigma 18-35 T2. I guess gathering money for Sigma primes would took to much… I guess my maximum price range are vespids, but the most important question is do you find them too specific to be universal? I started searching from Rokinon DSX, then checked Meike and my question is: where to stop upgrading to get that bang for the buck :)

    hello and thanks for the review. hoe is the coverage on Helium8k FF, I have the Gemini and wold love to know if they cover 5k HD which is almost identic in size.
    I am on the fence between the DZO kit and the upcoming Tokina 25-75 which has a larger image circle but almost no sample footage yet. The DZO lenses look great on almost all sample shots. Have you noticed distortion, artefacts or CA - THANKS

    • @Moviesauce
      @Moviesauce  3 роки тому

      I haven't tested at 8K FF. I normally just shoot at 8K HD or 2:1. I'll have to give it a try and report back. My hunch is the 20-55 will have slight vignetting at FF, but surely someone has tested them extensively on an Gemini by now.
      I love the Pictors and would highly recommend them, but all things being equal, if you can just as easily get the Tokina 25-75, my assumption is that would be the slightly nicer/cleaner/better lens. The Tokinas are kind of a gold standard.
      But you won't be disappointed with the quality of the DZOFilm Pictors either. Really just comes down to character. I like a little character to the lens. I think the DZOFilms will have a little more character.

      I’ve used an XT3 as a stills camera, not really for video since I have better video cameras. I experimented with adapting my EF lenses but decided it was better to use XF lenses with the fuji - mainly for electronics, the adapters I tried were crap. But that wouldn’t be a problem with a manual lens like the Pictor. I personally wouldn’t do it, but if it’s what you have and it looks good, there’s no reason no to.

    I kind of understand IRIX using “odd” focal lengths. When you think about it 45mm is equivalent to the popular 28mm used with super 35 cameras. The new 30mm works out to around the same focal length that an 18mm lens would give on super 35. Some goes for their 135 macro which gives the similar field of view/focal length equivalent as 90-100mm lenses on super 35. I feel like they were trying to create a uniform set of lenses that provide a familiar cinema look while still working on full frame sensors.

      They are sharper and cleaner image, yes. But the comparison is kind of off tbh, since the ones from IRIX are primes, and the DZOs are zooms, while the development of the IRIX are more prone to the modern side, the DZOs are about organic image... they really completely different stuffs except the price range, or at least the comparison should have been about primes from both companies (since DZO does have cine primes too), not primes vs zooms.

    Wow, calling a deep rear element a mistake is an arrogant call. There are a bunch of lenses that have deep rear elements. The angenieux DP Rogue lenses are a good example. You can't use lenses with a deep element on film cameras with a mirror box. It's not a design flaw it's a design choice that allows the lenses to be smaller and more affordable.

    • @Moviesauce
      @Moviesauce  3 роки тому

      The angenieux are PL mount lenses (without an ef option). There are some PL mount lenses with a deep rear element. I've yet to find another EF lens that does.
      And for that matter, when it's configured with the PL mount rather than the EF on the pictors, I don't believe it's considered to have a deep rear element. It's compatible with the PL Revolva without a modification when some of the typical PL glass with deep rear elements are not.

    • @Moviesauce
      @Moviesauce  3 роки тому

      Also, the Angenieux DP Rouge lenses are pretty old glass at this point. I'd be surprised if anyone was releasing new deep rear element glass in today's market.

    • @TheNinjaBro
      @TheNinjaBro 3 роки тому

      @@Moviesauce The lens is the same distance from the sensor no matter the mount. There may be more room inside a certain mount but the rear element is the same distance from the sensor, it has to be for the lens to work. Any lens that can not support a mirror box and is in a format that originally was built around a mirror box by definition has a deep rear element. There are a bunch of them. EF and PL originally were built around mirror boxes for film cameras, hence the DP rogue lenses were a big deal at the time. They could not be used on film cameras. The DZO zoom look like they would not work with a mirror box & as I understand they wont even clear the glass in a speed booster. My point is that it is obviously not a design mistake, it is the reason you can get such a small and affordable lens like that. The fact that you have a third party accessory that happens to not work with it is hardly the fault of the lens manufacturer.

    • @TheNinjaBro
      @TheNinjaBro 3 роки тому

      @@Moviesauce The DP rogue being old is an odd comment, aside from the fact that I would consider them a rather recent lens, the DP Rogue's make the point that deep rear elements are a design feature not a design mistake. I would expect that we will increasingly see lenses with deep rear elements as mirror boxes are a thing of the past. Hell the hugely popular speed boosters are only possible because of the removal of mirror boxes and the protrusion of the rear element. So I would expect that deep rear elements will become the norm. It is the best way to get affordable, fast and lightweight lenses so I sure hope more companies jump on board.

    • @TheNinjaBro

      A. The Irix Cine lenses come with a lens hood. So at the very least the people making the lens care.
      B. For lightweight rigs, especially with behind the lens ND filters like with the Kippertie mounts I use, a lens hood is preferable to a matte box.
      C. 90% of people with matte boxes are really just using them for show - makes their rig look more "pro." I personally hate using them. Unnecessary size/weight/bulk/added time when changing lenses...in most cases.
