Women in Kenya drive trucks, matatus, build roads, are in factories, even Maasai women build houses and so on. The only challenge we had was enough women being incorporated in the blue/white collar jobs but its not a problem anymore.
@@DSLSimiyu I've not seen any increase and I don't think it's good, women shouldn't have to do manual labor jobs in my opinion, and vast majority of women don't want to either.
The matatu culture is more than just transportation... Its more of an experience, hired for travels around Kenya, some hired for intimate local movie showcases, especially those with screens on every seat. It basically an easier avenue to promote the creative industry, that's why you would find someone paying slightly more(affordable thou to the common Kenyan) to ride in a more kitted out matatu than a quiet one because at the end of the day, we all know, it's a way in supporting ourselves as youths plus enjoy while doing it. That's why it's effortless.
You took the words right out of my mouth brother. thanks for the clear explanation of the culture. Remember even Kenya's president supported the art which honestly is very creative and unique. Very many reasons to love this country if one is patient enough.
"BOMAYE" is a Congolese/ Lingala term meaning "finish him". That what crowds in the Rumble in the jungle were shouting during the fight "Ali Bomaye" i.e Ali finish him.
Funny how what has mostly been considered a nuisance in Kenya has become globally recognized as part of Nairobi culture. 30 Years ago when I was a teenager Matatu culture was so big and there used to be competitions where the best matatu was rewarded. 20 years ago the government cracked down the industry to create some order. 10 years ago after order had been brought to the industry competition for customers has pushed the limits of what people are willing to invest to be number 1
5:47, it is boma ye,congolese swahili, meaning "Bomoa yeye" It is what the Congolese were chanting to Mohamed Ali during the famous Rumble in the jungle fight in 1974 between him and George Foreman, which Ali won, it means "destroy him"... the chant went "Ali... Boma Ye". It remains one of the greatest boxing bouts in history to date.
4:35 When Ali fought George Foreman in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1974, the crowd shouted *"Ali Bomaye"* , which means "Ali kill him" (lol). You can hear it in _Ali Bomaye by The Game feat. Rick Ross & 2 Chainz_ . The fight was also the subject of the Fugees' song _Rumble In The Jungle_
Well, about where you can get the bus mostly on any bus station in Nairobi. They carry different routes and therefore Matatus from every route try to outdo the other Matatus carrying different routes on the graphics. It's more of a culture and competition
I felt this video didn't do justice ..and yo about gender equality or fairness in opportunities in jobs and matatu industry in Kenya ain't a problem....If you have the skils and passion there are no limitations it's not an issue in Nairobi
It was what the Africans were chanting when Ali fought in Africa in Rumble in the Jungle. The Congolese chanted Ali bomoa yeye, but he heard Ali Bomaye.
Matatu culture is just de best and unique about our country but ALERT ALERT just have the exact money for bus fare coz this conductors out here are just ruthless don't give em a lot or you'll get a heart attack
That's more the rugged downtown area and not the City Centre. The Matatus are limited to certain streets and they don't park or drop off in the uptown areas.

The women that do that are a very small percentage though.
