Im from South Africa and recently worked in Nairobi for a couple months. The Mataus were the first things I noticed and they are very visible at night with all the lights and loud music. It was a pretty dope sight to hear and see.
Matatus are simply cheap public transportation and not party buses per se. We use them to go to work, school and even on the way to hospital. The creative designs and entertainment are solely to attract customers. They are privately owned and loosely regulated which allows for diversity of design and 'pimping'.
My mum told me the name matatu came from 30 cents coz they used to be charged 30 cents and the touts would shout ( Mang'otore matatú... matatú) to attract customers... meaning 30 cents in kikuyu or mapeni tatu in kiswahili. Hope young generation have learnt too😂😂. On racing cars, just check Safari rally 2022.
They are freehand spray painted, not wrapped so the art is permanent. 10:40 you can see one on the left prior to the mods. There are hundreds of them, no schedule, When it's full it hits the road.
The matatus are endless. There are available on different routes. It is a lucrative business for the owners. We do have shows where the new matatus oth new designs are showcased. This culture is authentic and has provided alot of jobs for young artists, technicians and drivers who would otherwise be unemployed. It is a culture something we appreciate and are very proud of as kenyans. As an investor, to purchase a fully decked out matatu, you can end up spending close to $100k or more. If you come to Kenya, you have to experience travelling in a decked out matatu. It's awesome. You would love it.
There are thousands matatus. They are all different designs except those with uniform company colors. The ride itself is the car-show, you get a front-row seat to the breaking of all traffic rules. And which is best? Depends on which neighborhood you are from. You'll be supporting your route for fav. matatu.
Once a nganya is old and rugged,it doesn’t attract customers so it’s taken to the operating room for some make over before it hits the road again. There is a high number of new matatus also the old ones that have existed are quite a number
There is a generation that it attracts let's be honest. When I was younger I loved nganyas but with age you outgrow this. It's just chaos and noise. There is nothing cool about loud noise anymore. 😂😂😂
Coz in the 80s we used to pay 3shillings fare. A matatu was a modified pickup..where people would sit facing each other and interlocking their feet...😂
Every end of the year there is an event to award the best matatu of the year. The most sleak matatus come to the event and they are each given a chance to showcase their prowess not only the sleak look but also the prowess of their drivers whom we refer as pilots are put to test.
We roll out a new nganya every year.... Matatu culture is a show which rewards the most magnificent nganya, we have the art of the big buses the 33seater and vans, 14 seater.... The buses culture is in Nairobi city while the vans culture is in Mombasa city..... It's a sweet culture that extends country wide.... We also have car shows, çlassic and modern 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
each nganaya has like a legacy to keep but when hoter models come in the older ones are modified or even undergo a complete transformation, there is also competition between different routes matatus no one wants to be left behind so we try to outdo each other all the time😅😅
1:34 it's not a party bus in kenya, the reason why is most people prefer these decked out busses for the service and the reason why they are out at night is cause the other common buses end service before most late nighters are out of the city CBD so if you're heading home, it might be the only means of transport home.
On your question how often they rebrand...1st there are many of them , but when a matatu gets old , they introduce another one , though the older one may just continue working , with an introduction of a new one , they loose their bragging rights.... the ones you seeing people screaming at night , blowing whistles ,hanging all over, that's more like a ceremony to introduce a new matatu on the street
For classic cars, The Africa Concours d'Elegance, ia an annual organized by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club and open to all makes of cars and motorcycles, is the classiest event on the Kenya Motor Sports Federation calendar. For racing, we have the famed Safari Rally which is just "chef's kiss"
Well... I'm a Kenyan btw I love your content..... answer to your question..... there are many and I mean many of them and they get new ones every time plus old ones get remodeled
Find videos about the same public transport soup up from other countries. Good for content. I believe the Phillipines have some great ones too. Jamaica and Haiti too
the best matatus are the ones that go to Rongai and Ngong, those buses be LIIIIIIIT, i be having kareoke every time im on em🤣🤣Thursdays to Sunday, we got strangers drinking together on em and having a good time. If you looking to party have a wild night, Kenyans are the best.
The best way to join youths in the city our own culture under the sun,Nothing beats like seeing this boys having a job and appreciated world wide Its imported mostly from South Korea as FH lorry, then done from there..There is transportation of the oldery and those not willing to use known as kenya bus, Thanks Fam
Hi 👋🏾 am here to answer yeah the matatu are always there on a daily basis and so many of them , plenty to choose which you want as your transport , happy to help ❤
7:04 the design changes when a new one is bought, in short since there are so many of them that are bought every month, it's unlikely that two designs will be the same unless the operators decide that's what they want.
They are so many plying different routes, and it's worth noting tht nairobians are inspired by black americans right from dress code n music.... Thanks to our black brothers from USA
And there are so many matatus in the city over 500 cars designed this way everyday out on thestreets...And yes they do change the designs regulary like after 5 months or sum
1:01 these ppl are giving good ideas. We need to up the matatu game even more. Edit: 4:10 Not a bad idea either. A show similar to Pimp My Ride.... "we heard you like rims... so we added more rimz on your rimz"
We have different routes/hoods here the owner registers his nganya under a Saccos (a body regulates the matatus operations in one route. Also the matatu can not operate on another route except the one it has been registered to operate. You find that we have over 200 Saccos each Saccos unleashing their beasts/nganyas/matatus. You can find a route having more than 5 Saccos under which the matatus operate. Also 1 Sacco can have 200 matatus doesn't have to be a specific number. We also have matatus that are very simple and quiet without the loud music depending on one's preference. All these operating under one Sacco.
They are public transport it's transport business in Kenya bt th nganya looks attracts more daily customers depending on the routes n hiring them for private events n road trip is allowed for a price
Every route has its own nganya which are several. Sometimes nganya are referred to us manyanga! The bosies are made from scratch and graffities drawn by hand! The elderly use uber or ambulance they can't use matatu they can be promoted to glory as fast as possible!
Im from South Africa and recently worked in Nairobi for a couple months. The Mataus were the first things I noticed and they are very visible at night with all the lights and loud music. It was a pretty dope sight to hear and see.

matatu is a bantu word meaning three
And it was because they used to pay 3cents for most matatu rides and destinations
Coz in the 80s we used to pay 3shillings fare. A matatu was a modified pickup..where people would sit facing each other and interlocking their feet...😂
Not 3 shillings but "mang'otore matatu"
Tatu is the Swahili word for three, matatu is a reference word for three depending on which Bantu tribe you come from.

Tatu means three in swahili. So matatu are called mathree, ma-tatu which translates to ma-three
There’s one matatu for my area called “ZITRAN”😍
