I'm actually one of the few weird people that's probably going to cancel my Amex Platinum and keep my Delta Reserve. I travel enough in the year for Delta Silver/Gold status. So the MQD waiver and 1 MQM boost helps move up to the Delta Gold/Platinum Status territory. I'm regularly flying Delta, stay in Delta lounges and have no concerns booking connecting flights so I know I'm a unique case. Amex Platinum is nice but tracking the usage of those credits can hurt my head a bit. Something about the Delta Reserve keeping that simple is fine by me. Agree with the Reserve needed something more. Honestly, if I wasn't traveling for work, I would get rid of both my Amex Platinum and Delta Reserve for a Capital One Venture X. Those work flights really help me get some points and status. Once my work travel days are over, I'd like to simplify my credit card game. Play the game while the rules of the game favor you.
My wife and I live 90 minutes from ATL and we are committed to paying as many of our bills as possible via credit cards. Thus, we are in an ideal position to take advantage of the Delta Reserve card. Five years ago I got a Delta Reserve business card and she got a Delta Reserve personal card. In our opinion, one of the biggest perks is the easier pathway to Delta Skymiles Platinum status. Platinum status, along with the complementary Regional Upgrades, means that we typically get free upgrades from Main Cabin to Comfort+ or from Comfort+ to First Class at the time of booking. And we love the free access to the Delta SkyClub lounges, particularly at our connecting and destination airports. The free upgrades and lounge access make our travel (particularly business travel) a lot more bearable and cost-effective. And, oh, by the way, the new cards are SO striking!
I'm also a DTW Hub Flyer and this really hit home. I do wish my reserve at least had better multipliers. I have been considering adding the gold to my wallet.
Looking at an example round trip flight of Chicago to New Orleans (fastest time), it's $767 for Comfort+ and $1130 for First Class. So enough with a $550 annual fee, it still comes out ahead. Worth stating that the same flight is $650 main cabin, so the $250 Delta Plat would also come out ahead. Either are net positive, just depends on your class preference.

Decided to renew my amex plat for the second year and got back $300 after 3k spend, I also got my $200 hotel credit, used up $30 in uber eats so far, $50 saks, $10 in offers, $40 in airline seat upgrades, $40 on a checked bag, and if I go to the lounge estimate value $40 for two people. Just like that I’m in profit in the first 3 months!!
Delta Platinum also gives an annual companion pass for $250 annual fee and Delta Gold (and platinum) gives free bags. The Delta Reserve annual fee seems unjustifiable for me. But the new airplane Reserve card design is sweet. Agree with Sebby, I wish it had more tangible benefits.
If you don't fly a lot on Delta OR you don't want to use the card a lot, the Delta Reserve card is not worth it. On the other hand, if you fly a lot on Delta AND you want to use the card a lot, the Delta Reserve is a killer deal. In particular, if you have a small business side hustle and your vendors accept Amex, it can more than pay for itself.
With the Walmart plus credit, my wife and I have saved a ton on gas so far as well. You get the fuel benefit pretty much for free and then you can use another card to pay for the gas i.e. a gas rewards card. Don't be sleeping on the Walmart+ lol
DTW hub flyer - have platinum. Personal flyer with spouse. 3-4 per year. Have platinum status and find the auto upgrade from main to comfort + for us to be a big plus.
I live near Las Vegas, and we're flying to GA, SC, or FL every year. I can easily justify the Reserve's annual fee with the companion certificate alone. Even comparing to the Delta Gold or Delta Platinum, the additional perks put us ahead. At Christmas, we're flying First Class to Atlanta for $1,800. If I didn't have the companion pass, I would have paid $1,200 X 2 for Comfort+. That means I am already saving $600, even if I count the first class seats at $0.
I agree, the companion certificates rock! But you have to make the reservations early so that they don't sell out of the seats in the appropriate fare classes.
This card needs a refresher! Baldy! The companion pass is really the main objective but, I use it for the lounge access. The point system is horrible but, flying Delta is a lot nicer than Southwest - whom I stood by for decades. But the nonstop availability for Delta is nonexistent. It’s horrible! I liked how Southwest is nonstop. BTW I have this card.
GF just upgraded to the Reserve. Possibly the coolest card ever printed. I still don’t see the point of it, though. If you are flying that much on Delta, you probably don’t need a status boost from this card. I’m sticking with the Amex Platinum; outside of the dubious value of the companion certificate, the Platinum crushes this card in every way except the coolness of the 747 card itself.
Just one annual companion certificate used on a Comfort+ or First Class ticket pays for the card’s annual fee so I love it. It should have access the SkyClub no matter what airline you’re flying, but that’s just my opinion. It also needs to rack up SkyMiles at 5x per dollar on Delta purchases instead of 3x if they are going for super Delta loyalists.
I definitely see the Delta Reserve as a niche product for actual frequent flyers and not travel hackers. It's one of the few Amex products I haven't churned. Coincidentally I just got an offer to upgrade my Delta Blue to Gold for 10K miles + $50 statement credit. I'd basically be paying $49 (plus the opportunity cost of rewards on $1K spend) for 10K miles. I've already had the gold signup bonus so it sounds like an OK deal.
I just got approved for the fidelity cash rewards visa signature card for a very small 1,000$ limit on the 8th, despite the low limit, I’m just glad I was approved 🤷🏾♂️
As someone that got it. Don’t. Just agh. It’s been a month and I’m like beating myself over the head for it. Mine came in the purple reserve box tho. I mean I have moments where I really love taking it out and using it because I’m a plane nerd. But that’s the ONLY perk and honestly I’m the only person appreciating it.
I fly delta a ton for work but since I am a contractor, we don't get reimbursed for travel. I usually just book the cheapest delta flight possible so basic economy which doesn't count anymore :(
The Delta Reserve card done up as a piece of a former DAL 747-400 is awesome keepsake. Other than that, as I always say, If you have any AMEX Delta card (except Blue) Delta cannot be your airline of choice for the fee incidental credit for the AMEX Platinum. Baggage fees are the easiest remaining way to trigger the AMEX Platinum credit so you cannot have a cobranded credit card for that airline. Therefore I still think the AMEX Platinum is the easier to justify card with the variety of perks it offers. Finally, how boss does the Ritz-Calton card sound?!?!?!?!?!?!?
🪒 I think I speak for everyone when I say the Delta Reserve has a strong one year use and then it falls after that. My plan has been acquire all or most of the points from opening Delta Plat and Gold cards (both personal and business) then acquire the Delta Reserve and use those miles to hopefully get an upgrade at a non-hub location. This is an insane wishful thinking but it’s the strategy I’m going with for using sky miles for upcoming international flights for next year. Otherwise, I can see keeping the Delta Reserve for year 2 if I know I have a certain use for the annual certificate. I’m by Chicago and not one of the coast so the use case is less value for me.
It should be noted that the Delta Platinum also gives an annual companion pass (and free bags) for only $250 so the Delta Reserve annual fee seems completely unjustifiable.

I picked up the Delta reserve when moving to Hawaii, you can originate flights from Hawaii using the companion pass which is really valuable when flying back to the continental US.
Living in Hawaii REALLY makes me enjoy having this card. It will pay for itself every year if you have a companion here to use it with. I wish they would make the miles 5x to match the platinum, since the free bags require that the tickets be purchased with this card. That's the only time I get sad using this card. It's also the only time I ever use it, haha!

If you have a platinum, I could see why one might shrug it off, but the companion credit will easily offset the annual fee because if you're flying on delta from Hawaii, chances are it's going to cost moar than the fee. I could (but would not) argue that if the only time I used this card was to purchase my ticket back to see family and get a second ticket for free, this card would have value. I also us it to get the status bump, but that requires significant spend, but I value the status boost where other may not.

I recently flew on Delta, and I think it’s a great airline. The reserve is heavily marketed, but the multipliers are just not great. You would essentially be spending to gain status more than miles.

Indeed, this is why platinum status is so nice - free upgrade from Main Cabin to Comfort+ at the time of booking. But it also depends on the airports. ATL is my home airport, so the competition for upgrades on most of my flights is pretty fierce.
I have been looking those different two cards for two weeks now because I have a hard time what’s best for me. This will be first time to apply American Express card. I’m thinking about just start with American Express Platinum card? I love to travel but never been a whole lot though. Sebby, I was VERY disappointed with the cheesy regular envelope, it came in a few months ago, for such a pretty offering considering the splash they made about it and the limited number of 747 cards. At least a small nice box wouldn’t have been nice for my upgrade. Don’t know if I’ll renew at this level with Delta.
The reserve now 650$. Was turned away at Centurion lounge in Sao Paulo. Booked on the Delta app to travel to Brazil next January and even though its a Delta flight its operated by LaTam which will charge for the second bag 100$ each way. I will soon cancel. Just got a LaTam credit card with CARDLESS which actually seems to be a great card
Hard to justify unless you have some kind of crazy Delta super status end game. I’m in ATL so it could actually ALMOST make sense. LOL But having the Plat already, the Delta Reserve is a tough sell.
Delta Reserve is a good card for avid Delta fliers living in a hub to use that status tie breaker. Everyone else will probably take their chances and play the Amex Platinum coupon game.
Great video Sebby! I was kind of skeptical about the $200 hotel credit, but it came in clutch for when my parents came to visit and it was a better price than nearby Hilton or Marriott chains. Delta has become the biggest airline in LAX, so I could get away with swapping the Platinum for the Reserve, but why? I get more MR to skymiles/dollar and far more credits to offset the higher AF on the Platinum. The only thing that is attractive with the Reserve is the priority on upgrades.
For me, it is the MQMs. The companion means it does not cost that much. So the incremental cost of reserve over Delta Plat is worth it for the better u/g cert.

My question is do you think I should ask AmEx if they have a retention offer to keep the card for one more year, or should I downgrade to the Gold?

You just have to look at your own personal situation to justify the card. Same feelings with the platinum card. I’m happy with my new Platinum card, but I’m a pretty solid Delta customer and that might make a difference. I should also add that I replaced a Delta Gold Amex card with my Platinum.
Venture X is a good choice if you’re a casual traveler who doesn’t need all the premium lounge access. Living at a Delta hub makes the choice easy for me- it’s Amex platinum for the lounge and I generally fly to places with a Centurion.
I would lean towards Venture X first given the easy value (worst case, the card is a keeper due to the credits + points you get every year for holding it).
@@mikeybee98 often, almost exclusively Delta, and live in a hub city (NYC). Sebby is pretty spot on here, this card doesn't make sense for everyone. Free comfort+, RUCs and upgrades from east to west coast often are my favorite perks (have been upgraded multiple times from paid main to D1 JFK-SFO ...I of course was in C+ for free anyway as a platinum medallion)
Are you sure the reserve companion cert works for domestic Delta One (e.g. SFO-JFK) now? I had trouble last time booking and tried calling in multiple times.
It stopped working in 2021 but they've since reversed that decision in Jan 2022. The only requirement is you have to book the refundable rate (has to exist + can be a hefty premium). First class companion ticket and 2 guest passes to delta sky lounge is mostly the fee.. but when I flew tampa to nashville.. it was $1200 per ticket first class... my 1 companion pass for $550 saved me money

I don't see how the Delta Reserve is worth it vs. Delta Platinum. The $300 difference between the two cards buys quite a few SkyClub visits not to mention the Delta Platinum gets you points on a lot more things.

To add on to this; you can get each Delta card (Delta Gold, Delta Platinum, etc.) but not repeatable (per terms at least) in the same way as... well every other issuer.
Been seeing that so e people's delta Reserve came in a box. Mine came in an envelope and it was very underwhelming for a card with that high of an annual fee.
I ordered the one made from the plane but they accidentally sent the purple one which came in a fancy box but then when I asked about the plane one, they sent that in an envelope so it must just be b/c of the limited edition version whereas the regular purple card still gets the full box. I think the plane based card design is really nice

Depends on what’s worth it for you. 5x on Platinum for all the travel you get reimbursed for. Reserve still captures 3x and the upgrades. Unless corporate is paying for your first class ticket, you may earn more on the platinum multiplier.

Delta Platinum only gets you a coach companion ticket. Reserve gets you a first class/biz ticket.
So for you what is the best credit card to travel?

This is an insane wishful thinking but it’s the strategy I’m going with for using sky miles for upcoming international flights for next year. Otherwise, I can see keeping the Delta Reserve for year 2 if I know I have a certain use for the annual certificate. I’m by Chicago and not one of the coast so the use case is less value for me.
It should be noted that the Delta Platinum also gives an annual companion pass (and free bags) for only $250 so the Delta Reserve annual fee seems completely unjustifiable.
For the very reasons you stated is why I have the Delta Platinum and not the Reserve. Not to mention the better multipliers.

I picked up the Delta reserve when moving to Hawaii, you can originate flights from Hawaii using the companion pass which is really valuable when flying back to the continental US.

Living in Hawaii REALLY makes me enjoy having this card. It will pay for itself every year if you have a companion here to use it with. I wish they would make the miles 5x to match the platinum, since the free bags require that the tickets be purchased with this card. That's the only time I get sad using this card. It's also the only time I ever use it, haha!

If you have a platinum, I could see why one might shrug it off, but the companion credit will easily offset the annual fee because if you're flying on delta from Hawaii, chances are it's going to cost moar than the fee. I could (but would not) argue that if the only time I used this card was to purchase my ticket back to see family and get a second ticket for free, this card would have value. I also us it to get the status bump, but that requires significant spend, but I value the status boost where other may not.

I recently flew on Delta, and I think it’s a great airline. The reserve is heavily marketed, but the multipliers are just not great. You would essentially be spending to gain status more than miles.

Delta status is not the best at the lower levels compared to American and United. Still waiting for my first upgrade.
@@FelixCervantes I agree - I didn't start getting upgrades until I reached platinum status. Indeed, this is why platinum status is so nice - free upgrade from Main Cabin to Comfort+ at the time of booking. But it also depends on the airports. ATL is my home airport, so the competition for upgrades on most of my flights is pretty fierce.
I have been looking those different two cards for two weeks now because I have a hard time what’s best for me. This will be first time to apply American Express card. I’m thinking about just start with American Express Platinum card? I love to travel but never been a whole lot though. Maybe Delta Skymiles American Platinum card would be good because it seem like it has a lot more perks? What do you think?

Sebby, I was VERY disappointed with the cheesy regular envelope, it came in a few months ago, for such a pretty offering considering the splash they made about it and the limited number of 747 cards. At least a small nice box wouldn’t have been nice for my upgrade. Don’t know if I’ll renew at this level with Delta.
The reserve now 650$. Was turned away at Centurion lounge in Sao Paulo. Booked on the Delta app to travel to Brazil next January and even though its a Delta flight its operated by LaTam which will charge for the second bag 100$ each way. I will soon cancel. Just got a LaTam credit card with CARDLESS which actually seems to be a great card

Delta Reserve is a good card for avid Delta fliers living in a hub to use that status tie breaker. Everyone else will probably take their chances and play the Amex Platinum coupon game.

Great video Sebby! I was kind of skeptical about the $200 hotel credit, but it came in clutch for when my parents came to visit and it was a better price than nearby Hilton or Marriott chains.
Delta has become the biggest airline in LAX, so I could get away with swapping the Platinum for the Reserve, but why? I get more MR to skymiles/dollar and far more credits to offset the higher AF on the Platinum. The only thing that is attractive with the Reserve is the priority on upgrades.

For me, it is the MQMs. The companion means it does not cost that much. So the incremental cost of reserve over Delta Plat is worth it for the better u/g cert.

My last 5 flights have been with Delta, but I also utilize Southwest airlines. Not only do I have the Reserve, I also own the AmEx Personal Platinum, Chase Southwest and CSP cards. My question is do you think I should ask AmEx if they have a retention offer to keep the card for one more year, or should I downgrade to the Gold?
Doesn't hurt to fish for an offer :) If you've never had the Gold, then downgrade if no offer. Otherwise maybe cancel given "once in a lifetime" rule.
🪒 I personally don’t know if I would ever consider getting the reserve card. I have the delta gold and it’s good enough for me as a light traveler. You just have to look at your own personal situation to justify the card.
Same feelings with the platinum card. Maybe in the future when I’m able to do some international travel with my family but I don’t know if I would really be able to justify that annual fee. 🤷🏼♂️

Sebby! I’ve had the Reserve card for two years and I need to move on. I need help deciding between AmEx Platinum and Capital One Venture X. Can you help?
I’m happy with my new Platinum card, but I’m a pretty solid Delta customer and that might make a difference. I should also add that I replaced a Delta Gold Amex card with my Platinum.
Venture X is a good choice if you’re a casual traveler who doesn’t need all the premium lounge access. Living at a Delta hub makes the choice easy for me- it’s Amex platinum for the lounge and I generally fly to places with a Centurion.
I think you need to decide which travel partners you prefer. Other than that if you travel a lot I’d say Amex Plat
I would lean towards Venture X first given the easy value (worst case, the card is a keeper due to the credits + points you get every year for holding it).
You need both for traveling since you’ll need a visa and extra lounge with PP Restaurants is a nice bonus for a keeper card.

@@mikeybee98 often, almost exclusively Delta, and live in a hub city (NYC). Sebby is pretty spot on here, this card doesn't make sense for everyone. Free comfort+, RUCs and upgrades from east to west coast often are my favorite perks (have been upgraded multiple times from paid main to D1 JFK-SFO ...I of course was in C+ for free anyway as a platinum medallion)
Are you sure the reserve companion cert works for domestic Delta One (e.g. SFO-JFK) now? I had trouble last time booking and tried calling in multiple times.
It stopped working in 2021 but they've since reversed that decision in Jan 2022. The only requirement is you have to book the refundable rate (has to exist + can be a hefty premium). Checked bags has no value for me. I travel with a backpack. There is no reason to travel with a bunch of extra stuff for no reason.

I’ll never understand why the multipliers are so bad on the reserve compared to the delta platinum. The card cost more for what!? It does look good. I’m considering on applying for the platinum.
First class companion ticket and 2 guest passes to delta sky lounge is mostly the fee.. but when I flew tampa to nashville.. it was $1200 per ticket first class... my 1 companion pass for $550 saved me money
🪒 I think the Delta Reserve is a niche card for those who fly often and only fly Delta. So it’s hard to justify to someone who only goes on vacation once or twice a year and is looking for the best deal on flights. The Amex Platinum has more use cases for anyone who can make use of the majority of the credits.

Is it easier using the companion certificate from the reserve than the one you get with delta platinum?
I have such an issue with using the hotel credit with the platinum card :( Are there any tricks for this? Most of the time when I am traveling I can't find hotels in the fine hotel + resorts or the hotel collection.
Make sure you call. I found a hotel I wanted & called & sure enough it was on he list but wouldn't pull up on the site.

I don't see how the Delta Reserve is worth it vs. Delta Platinum. The $300 difference between the two cards buys quite a few SkyClub visits not to mention the Delta Platinum gets you points on a lot more things.
(not disagreeing but additional considerations)
1) Centurion Lounge
2) Companion Certificate that works for more flights
3) More room for MQM Boost, especially for high spenders / business owners

I'm disappointed they don't give you a choice in the plane. When I was a kid, my parents flew Delta internationally and the brand always used the Lockheed L-1011. Would love to see that on a card instead of the tired old 747 shape over and over.

No requirement to use the card. Reminder that it's still medallion tier > fare class > Delta Reserve (as the kicker)
Example:
a) Delta Gold status
b) Delta Silver status w/ Delta Reserve
If there's only 1 spot, then Delta Gold would win status > DL Reserve kicker

Been seeing that so e people's delta Reserve came in a box. Mine came in an envelope and it was very underwhelming for a card with that high of an annual fee.
I ordered the one made from the plane but they accidentally sent the purple one which came in a fancy box but then when I asked about the plane one, they sent that in an envelope so it must just be b/c of the limited edition version whereas the regular purple card still gets the full box. I think the plane based card design is really nice

I’m a Delta loyalist and I’m finding it difficult to redeem the AMEX MR points from the platinum for a great value family trip on Skyteam. I get gold status from typical business travel and the MQM bonus from spend on the card would bump me up easily into platinum.
Reserve for the ability to get Platinum status is worth it IMO.
Depends on what’s worth it for you. 5x on Platinum for all the travel you get reimbursed for. Reserve still captures 3x and the upgrades. Unless corporate is paying for your first class ticket, you may earn more on the platinum multiplier.
