  • What's up, folks! I'm back with the next Madonna album (though as I discuss in the video, we can go back for any of the remaining tunes on I'm Breathless album), Erotica (1992), starting with the title-track. I really enjoyed the vocal variety of this one, in particular some of the more melodic (almost tribal) backing vocals. And this tune is indeed sensual and sexy, which I suppose comes as no surprise. So join me for a bold and steamy Madonna tune. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring some extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation and getting access to reactions blocked on UA-cam, behind-the-scenes videos, video-reactions, and blooper-reels from my videos can go here: / shnootz

I was 12 when this album was released. My mother, her bff and her two daughters and myself were traveling listening to the radio when this song was featured. The DJ was preparing the listeners to what we were about to hear. Uncensored/aired at 5 o’clock sharp. I was already a huge fan. I was rolling around my mom’s friends Astro van while her daughters looked at me with disgust 😂😂😂

The demos of the track Erotica are fantastic: Love Hurt and You Thrill Me. I think I'm Breathless deserves a closer look

Lots to say on this one! On a personal level it takes me straight back to the dancefloor of Ciao Baby at The Fridge in Brixton, that throbbing, filthy bass intro suddenly shaking the floor, then taking a quick sniff of a small bottle of liquid and losing myself in the music.
It took several versions to get to this final one, Madonna producing with Shep Pettibone. It's sexy and crackly, kind of dark and forbidden, made to make you feel a certain way. The track uses samples from a Middle Eastern singer, Faisul, and the horn parps are from Jungle Boogie by Kool and the Gang. Sonically and vocally there is a link to Justify my Love but apparently it didn't start out that way. Lyrically she introduces herself as Dita, and alter ego whose name was inspired by the actress Dita Parlo, and the song talks about sexual power dynamics, the intertwining of pleasure and pain, pushing boundaries (and she knew very well that was what she was doing at the time).
The album was simultaneously released with her "Sex" book and it caused a storm - people were queuing outside bookstores the night before release to get a copy of it but it also caused a bit of a media backlash. I bought a copy as a present for someone but never bought one for myself. You mentioned the PMRC, the album was released, like many at the time, in a "clean" version (for the kids and the sensitive) and a standard version (with all the rude bits intact for the grown ups). It meant being careful working in the music store - you didn't want an irate parent coming back angry and you also didn't want someone coming back complaining all the filthy bits were missing haha.
Personally I think it still sounds pretty fresh. Some of the other tracks haven't ages so well, the production being very of the time.

Definitely Madonna at her very best and most original. Have always loved it and still do.

I sure wouldn't mind a FULL "I'm Breathless" reaction. Once you're done with "Erotica" of course. 😉

Sounds good to me! I enjoy a concept album, and I liked what I heard from I'm Breathless.

I'm Breathless is in my top 5 Madonna albums, but I love experimental, daring Madonna. I suggest Hanky Panky which was a hit single, and Something to Remember which was re-released later on her "Best of Ballads" album with the same title.

I was curious so I googled it ; The female Arabic vocal @6:58
Lebanese queen of song Fairuz sued American singer Madonna
for sampling her famous Easter chant “Al Yawm Ulliqa Alal Khashaba” from 1962 on her 1992 single “Erotica”.
The Easter chant tells the story of the crucifixion of Jesus and is played on Good Friday every year. Madonna layered the lyric “put your hands all over my body” with Fairuz’s voice singing about the crucifixion.
Madge and Fairuz settled out of court for $2.5 million, and the album was subsequently banned in Lebanon.

Love this song and album. I felt so adult and naughty when I bought this album when I was in high school in the late 90's.

This was also the first release on her own music label Maverick (Alanis Morissettes 'Jagged little pill' was also released on it, as well as Erasures 'Cowboy' & 'Loveboat').
The book and the sexual themes took the attention away from the music, which made it less successful commercially. It took a while for people to acknowledge it.

Her best album. Yes yes LAP is really her best but Erotica is so daring, provocative, and brilliant. The Girlie Show Tour was magnificent . And let's not forget her beauty from the early 90s. This is when she looked her best.

This was Shep's first actual album where he was (co)writing and producing (rather than remixing).
He was also doing the same for Cathy Dennis for her "Into The Skyline' album almost at the same time, so some similar production and sequencers across both projects
This is where all the past lessons learned from remixing 100s of other artists and adding his own musical instruments and production is brought to the fore for Pettibone. In a way it also highlights that he is not a strong songwriter as such his strengths lie in production and bringing out the best in established songs than creating new ones.

@@izzyworld8068 He started has a remixing but his first production was with her major hit ''Vogue'', a major hit for Madonna. After this song, she wanted to work again with Shep for this album. All the songs was wrote in Shep appartement and was recording in a 8 tracks and since she wanted a dark, raw and unpolished sound, she not wanted to overproduced her songs. While she enters in the studios to recording the album, she transfert all the demos she made in Shep appartement, and after transfert the demos, ''Erotica'' was the song who she made a lot of changed until the final produc.
The chorus was totally originally different then final product, it's was changed after she wanted to recording a version of the song called ''Erotic'', for the SEX book and this is how the Dita caracter was born on the song and changed totally the bridge, the chorus and the whole mood of the track, put the lyrics in a very highly sexual charged.

This song was controversial and the video. The music video was only played three times in MTV during the night before permantaly banned.
I wanted to prevent, most of the songs of what you hear on this album was what the original demo sound. She wanted for this album a dark, raw and unpolished sound for this album, incited Madonna, Shep and Andre Betts (the other producer who producer three tracks on the album) to transfert almost eveyrthing of the demos to the final product. Outside to the title track, ''Thief of Hearts'' and ''Words'' (very different then the final product), She just made few minors changes while transfered the demos , that's it.

Madonna’s Erotica Era in 2 words. “ Soft Porn” I really love how intelligent with alot of innuendos in the lyrics express sexual fantasies. So hot. there’s a song in this album that I love the most is “ where life begins “. WOW amazing. Now. Madonna ‘s Erotica video Uncensored, ( of course) it’s hot in my opinion But brave and Revolutionary. It’s pretty much the making of her Book call SEX . it’s about of sexual fantasies. This album will change the whole spectrum of music entertainment.

3:erotica you thrill me ( live)

Madonna, like U2 etc, became successful and then went arty and experimental for a while. The results were passable but unsurprisingly don't get much airplay in 2024. In this case, I'd much rather listen to "Paid in Full", which is deservedly still played on the radio.

More, Back In Business, What Can You Lose would be my 3 other choices from I’m Breathless. They’re fab! As far as Erotica goes, it is, imo her last “essential” album. Everything since has been hit or miss with maybe the most exception of Ray of Light.

It is in a way a concept album as it was done in tandem with the notorious "SEX" erotic photography book.
This song sets the scene for the album introducing her after ego "Dita" an S&M mistress. Kind of taking a leaf out of Prince's book of alternative guises. A concept she will use again in future albums.
