I really like the what's the difference series. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoy it!
I had no idea a Sega CD version of this game even existed. Awesome!
Luckily, I knew about the special edition years ago, before the "retro craze" and got it cheap on eBay.
@@AtariBorn How the hell did you get THAT game cheap ever? It was like 70 bucks a decade ago.
@@edward18517 I think it was around 2001-2002. I got mine for ~$30 (also Three Dirty Dwarves for Saturn around the same time and price )
@@AtariBorn lucky bastard x_x
Best version of the game period.
In "Earthworm Jim 2", the homing missiles that Jim was able to use were shaped like little houses. Get it? ;)
Casey Decker ohh..... homes.... homing....
That's equally as great as Rocket Lawnchair in Metal Slug
Not only that, but the Hand Gun weapon in the game was also the hand of Jim's suit with gun barrels for fingers. ;)
Why have I gone through life not realising this until just now?
Also, the Barn-Blaster was literally a big ass barn filling the screen. These games are so cool!! Haha
Great comparison. I couldn't agree more!
And I'm still hoping for a Earthworm Jim 2 Console Wars episode. It would be awesome! :D
We have the games. We'll def do it one day.
Thanks for answering.
I love your show!
@@ConsoleWars Genesis and Saturn FTW
ce aqui?
looking forward to 2019 console wars!
I still miss Greg (Super Nintendo Guy). :(
Uhhh
fun fact: the sega cd version did get a pc port for win95 pc's (don't confuse it for the MS-DOS version that is available on GOG and Steam) the win95 version has the exact same content as the Sega CD version and instead of a password system you simply unlock the level in some sort of level select through a drop-down menu you can access at any point during the game the only downside being that some graphical effects are missing but other than that it's the exact same as the Sega CD version
So why the hell is GOG using the damn DOS release? That's so inefficient.
@@Clay3613 because the windows release is published by activision and not shiny entertainment so with the dos release gog only need to ask shiny and for windows release they need to ask shiny and activision cause copyright laws are complicated like that
Windows version has much cleaner sound samples too
My friend had the PC version of this back in the day, which has all the Sega CD enhancements. Best part was that the game disc was also the soundtrack. Every Halloween I have a scary music playlist for the trick-or-treaters and What the Heck?'s music is included... complete with the terrifying elevator music!
even the pc version
despte being based on sega cd has problems
the special edition for windows 95 released in 1995 (what a coincidence)
has the following problems:
"A couple of short audio cues were removed, replaced by lower quality versions, or are incomplete; e.g. the victory and failure music that plays at the end of Andy Asteroids, the voice at the title screen, and the bad ending speech"
" A few visual effects are absent relative to the Sega CD version; eg. the foreground fog in What the Heck, the darkness vignette in Intestinal Distress, and the distortion effect in Down the Tubes/Tube Race"
the second version based on original released in 1996 also has problems
"its missing the intestinal distress level"
"Generally runs at a sluggish speed compared to other versions, and is full of graphical glitches, particularly at the edges of the screen"
and poor controller support
Oh my god, that was _definitely_ a young Doug T. ranting about evolution. Hasn't changed a bit.
I love the actual text too on the easy difficulty ending: especially some of the... what would you call them? Footnotes? Sidenotes?-- The little jokes in the brackets like "tax men/payers" when talking about leeches, or the one where it says "Jim only wants the princess as a friend."(Which ESPECIALLY cracks me up when you put it side-by-side along the Tex Avery wolf joke in the ending.)
Its kind of hilarious given it's hard to read those jokes while your laughing at the vocals. XD
Great work. I'd like to see the same thing for EJ2 difference between Genesis, SNES, Saturn and Playstation versions.
These videos are invaluable since I didn't grow up collecting for the Genesis. Always informative and entertaining!
I am glad that I am able to contribute to this channel via Patreon. Just got my first receipt :-) - P.S. I had this game (Sega CD version) when it came out and it was my favorite game until my Sega CD died about 2 years later.
The music has pauses in it because every track is recorded in redbook audio, meaning it's read off the disc in real time the same way an audio CD is. You can put the EWJ:SE disc in any CD player and listen to the soundtrack!
Great video! The Sega CD version looks pretty sweet!
Really enjoying these "what's the difference" videos!
Grat comparison vid! waiting so bad for the one about "Eternal champions" vs "Eternal Champions CD"
One weird reaction that I have while playing both Eternal Champions was related to the music. Yeap, the quality is a way better on SegaCD. But I prefer the "zen" vibe of the original.
The CD version has all those gross fatalities
I couldn't imagine playing Challenge from the Dark Side, writing a script and editing all of the footage to show the difference. The CD version is so full of extras, it would take so damn long.
That one is a sequel, I believe.
@@aerogun18 It's more of a special edition. The story is the same.
The first time I experienced Earthworm Jim was when I went to my friend Josh's house and he had it on PC. It was awesome!!! Around that time, I had been renting the sequel for SNES from the video place inside of Albertsons (remember those?). I loved both games and eventually bought them. Classic games.
Never was able to beat but the first couple levels. Hard as nails this game! Great job with the comparison, I love this series!
Glad to see a new video! I recently found this channel and binge watched them all up until current, where the channel seemingly came into jeopardy, so this is quite nice.
Really good job, look forward to your next video.
Another great video Dan! So glad to see the channels growth from when I first found ya!
Still a very informative video, no skits, but I really like this more straight to the point format style. Please don't stop... Great quality content!
This’s amazing Dan
And everything on the channel is amazing
Thanks Dan. This is the what's the difference episode many of us have been waiting for. Keep up the good work man.
Ah yes, one of the greatest Sega CD game ever. Took me a long time to beat it on expert mode.
Once again, you blew me away, Dan! I'm glad you finally got the chance to experience the differences between these two games!
The genesis version is by far better than the SNES for a multitude of reasons, but he SegaCD/Special Edition is THE definitive version to play Earthworm Jim.
Much more content, and still plays great to this day. Hopefully the special edition will be re-released as a standalone title.
Great job, Dan! Can't wait to see more!
Keep up the great work, hope to see more comparisons as some of them I didn't even know were on the sega cd.
Nice ,nice, and nice, keep up the good work Dan ,highly entertained!
Awesome videos!.. I love this series of differences between games!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I really enjoy your comparisons. It's fun to watch and obviously nostalgic.
Great video as always. It also makes me want a fully boxed version of Earthworm Jim 2!
btw, I appreciate that you are taking video grab from the real thing. All the transparencies via dithering would look different on emulators. you're showing it like how the developers intended it to be!
Yeah, although that should go without saying. It'd be like if AVGN reviewed games using emulators. It just isn't something you do when reviewing console games from the vantage point of playing them on consoles.
Not necessarily, the transparency effects look the same on real hardware using SCART RGB cables. Granted, most people back in the day used composite or RF, but it's not a problem inherent with emulation, but rather the hardware's own RGB output.
Great video dan . No idea why they wuld go with the genesis over the sega cd version for the hd version ? Keep it up cant wait for the next. Take care
Thank you for the upload Dan I hope Greg is doing better bro 👍
Thanks for this. Hope you guys are having a wonderful day.
You have a wonderful day too!
Knew I should have gotten the CD version a few years back when it was “only” $100 cib.
I remember, back in about 2001 seeing multiple copies on eBay for around $30. That's how I obtained mine.
I got it recently. Don't remember paying too much for it.
Just get a rep or burned copy.
Awesome, I didn't really know about the differences. I'll have to get the Sega CD version when I can.
Thank you Dan, i like all the work youv'e done.
Sega CD is my preferred version too, great video!
This is a good video. I enjoyed the game comparisons for the Sega Genesis and Sega CD. Take care, Dan and keep making videos.
Plz more videos!! You r the best, follower since first video
You are awesome, Dan. I miss Greg. And I like Pat.
Great video hope to see more
This is a rare case where I have played the Sega CD version and I agree it's the definitive version of the game.
Awesome comparison of one of my favorite 16-Bit games!
Great video ! I love Earthworm Jim ! I never played the Sega CD version but now i want to !
Fantastic video!!!
This video was GROOVY!
The next video looks great! but really, thanks for the acknowledge of the Sega CD edition.
That was one of the biggest differences on Sega CD, the music (when done right) was so much better. I loved playing Streets of Rage on Sega CD. The music was how it was supposed to be.
Please compare Earthworm Jim 2 for SNES and MD/Genesis!
Great video Dan ,I didn't even know it had an Earthworm Jim for Sega CD .
IT'S UP TO $200 NOW?! I got a disc-only copy for like ten bucks... like ten years ago. Dang, man.
I love me some earthworm Jim, it’s how I first ran into your channel,
I’m still curious as to what version you prefer for earthworm Jim 2.
We'll get there eventually.
Console Wars
Saturn version
Sweet this was a nice suprise today !
The Sega CD version was ported to the PC as well, and that's the version I grew up playing.
EWJ has got to be the most under used trademark in videogame history, is he ever going to have any proper sequels
Awesome video.
If you want the best Earthworm Jim experience, go for the win95 version. It's basically the SEGA CD version but with 256 colors (as apposed to 61) and with auto saving.
Golly, if I had known the a Sega CD version of Earthworm Jim existed, I would've wished THAT version was released for WiiWare instead of the Genesis version; I mean don't get me wrong, the Genesis version is awesome... but the CD version is clearly better and is the version that SHOULD have been re-released. Oh well, love seeing more GOOD Sega CD games instead of just everyone assuming they all suck lol. Love the episode and I can't wait for more!!
Special edition is definitely the best version of the game.Genesis is good too. But sega cd one has more to it. There is also the special edition for pc(windows 95) and its cheaper too. But for modern pc's you need to have the cd to have the music play in the levels, download an updated dll file, and also changed the compatibility mode in the properties.
I played the special edition of this game and it's AWESOME!
Yay a new console war! btw, I recommend Samurai Showdown for the next WTD
The PC - Windows 95 version is also a good find, if you can get it cheap. There are ways to get it up and running on a modern PC too. There's also the Big O Can of Worms edition for MS-DOS, which is unfortunately based on the genesis version, but comes with Earthworm Jim 2.
This one is my first game on Sega in childhood. One of the Sega's masterpieces. Thanks for the video, I was always thinking that the difference with Sega CD version is only the soundtrack.
This made for an interesting comparison since it looks the same at first glance, but there are a lot of differences. In the example shown of the graphics looking mostly the same, the Sega CD has a school bus as part of the background that the Genesis game does not have. During the stage one boss fight, the Genesis version has some red debris among the pile of tires in the background, while the Sega CD game just has tires. There are probably a lot of little differences like those and it's fun to notice them. Nice comparison.
Not just the best version
It's the ultimate experience
Playing it on emu on my tablet device and loving it
These what's the difference videos are always great. I wasn't even aware there was a Sega CD version until now but it is a much more superior version and I don't understand why they didn't release that as Earthworm Jim HD instead of the Genesis version.
Great video thank you
2:37 I played Earthworm Jim on Sega CD for the first time yesterday. When I got to the main menu I went options then back to the main menu. When I got back to the main menu the audio about beating the game on difficult and being the best started playing. I hadn't even played the game yet!
Just wondering how the next CW episode is coming along.
Weeee doggy ... Earthworm Jim is a weird ass game, but I'm glad to know sega cd version exists if I pick it up again.
You just earned a subscriber sir.
Welcome to the channel!
does the SegaCD version offer weapon select?
Good Job Dud!
The Jungle Book, Cheetos Cheetah game, MK3
How about more SMS vs NES comparisons?
This series is amazing.
Pitfall the Mayan adventure would be a good one since it has Genesis,32x,and sega CD versions. In fact IF not already done it would make for a good console war since also on the SNES.
Wait.... I don't remember Earthworm Jim: Special Edition (PC version) having the homing missile or an ending like that, but it did have that extra boss and same good quality OST compared to the genesis version. Interesting.
Wow I had no idea how expensive it was these days. I guess I lucked out!
Only played SNES version back in the day, time to give SEGA CD version a go :) It is always interesting to see all these differences :)
I know it was just the developer trying to give people incentive to play through the game more than once, but I despised "Beat it on the hardest difficulty setting to get the 'real' ending" mechanic that was so prevalent back then. It seemed to be more popular with Japanese developers for whatever reason.
I don't remember it being that prevalent
@@DSan-kl2yc It was very common in Capcom and Konami games. Some of Sega's too.
thanks for the video
I still wonder why Rondo of Blood wasn't ported to Sega CD. It was literally the only console that could've had a perfect port, the red book audio would've been intact and the graphics weren't that demanding.
Thanks man!
Huge ewj fan here. This sega CD version was also released on windows back in the day. Maybe compare the genesis and Saturn versions of ewj2 next?
Kickass video
would you organize your videos? so it will be easy and fast to find console wars, what's the difference, unboxing and others
grumpy cat Yeah, they’re all in playlists.
Earthworm Jim I think he's mighty fine!
It also would've been amazing if they'd actually used the original art instead of messing up the looks in a lot of places and taking frames of animation OUT in HD...
But it’s actually strange that many games on the genesis were also put on the sega cd, it’s like as if they were saying ‘you don’t need to play genesis games anymore’
Also while it sounds cool a HD remake , but there’s already sooo many HD remakes of games, what’s the point of it because now we are slowly moving to 4K & even 8K, could it be possible that on an day those games will be remade again for 4K & 8K and so on?
I used to think Doug TenNapel was kidding about not believing in evolution.
The PC version has the soundtrack of the Sega CD version, but is slower paced making it a little easier.
Also, a couple of levels did make it in Earthworm Jim HD, such as the second New Junk City stage.
Can you do what's the difference earthworm jim 2 SNES vs PS1/Saturn. Please!
Which version is on Xbox and PlayStation?
A very mediocre HD port of the original game. None of the CD music or extra content.
Yeah. I only had the PC can 'o Worms version originally, and then the "Special edition" version which is basically the sega CD one & much better. Currently no easy way to play it anymore though, unfortunately.
That voice actor sounds like Robbin Williams at some parts.
Can you do nhl 94 differences?
Had both i think.. The CD one tripped me and my sister out.. cuz when you beat it and he starts singing during the credits, it sounds just like our dececed dad who sang a lot.. she still remembers im sure.. is my dad still alive? Who is that guy?
1:12 They ripped this voice sample from the Terminator film
