I didn't play the 32X version of Mortal Kombat II until recently. I was completely blown away by it. Very close to the Arcade version in terms of visual fidelity and it has the Genesis soundtrack. That's a win for me. Makes me wonder what Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 would've been like on the 32X.

32x was a 32-Mb cart Genesis was a 24-Mb cart. Those 8-Mb are the reason the content was added. The better color and voices is all the 32x version actually added over the Genesis version.
Also the Genesis and SNES went different routes with their ports. The SNES has lowres sprites/backgrounds, has less fighter idle animation but retains most Speech and low punch.
The Genesis has high res sprites/backgrounds, but misses tons of speech and low punch, the color usage isn't a memory thing.

I had the 32x version when I was younger and still have the snes version. I personally prefer the 32x version over the snes because the sprites look a lot better. The sound on both are good but both have flaws in the sound department, for example the 32x still has the annoying grunts that the mega drive has, and the snes has a lot of echo sounds and a higher pitch than the arcade. The intro on 32x also wipes the floor over the snes, the story is all done in text and the character boxes are small. 32x has more frames of animation but it only fixes some of the win poses. Baraka now has his win pose from the arcade instead of bowing, but Johnny Cage still puts his arms in the air and doesn't finish off with crossing the arms... The differences between the two are minor, and it really is down to personal preference.

"the sprites look a lot better". The only Sega console from those days that might achieve that is the Saturn port of MK2. However almost nobody owns that and it suffered many problems as well. All things considered the SNES port was an incredible achievement. There was the PC port too, which I owned but don't remember how it was different from the SNES.32X retains the fart noises from the Genesis and most embarrassingly of all the endings are horribly defective; they simply display the intro picture there with the text while SNES has two completely novel pictures for each ending not to mention that Shao Kahn's death is super dramatic and special on SNES. His exploding body visits all the lairs while uttering "no,nono!" and kick ass music starts playing as he explodes with a proper sound instead of the damp fart noise of the Sega consoles. Actually on Saturn Kahn's death has good sound but is a glitchy mess. Sega just completely missed the mark on MKII. Even with two post-releases after the Genesis version they still could not do a better job than SNES in all aspects.

@@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 I agree with you, the 32x port could have been arcade perfect, even better than the saturn as it wouldn't have had the load times. It is a very, very good port just some of the annoyances from the mega drive version are still there. As for developers saying the snes is the best port, they did say that but it was when referring to the initial ports, the 32x port came after the snes and mega drive.
The PC version was amazing, I had that too, it was very close to arcade perfect. The only minor differences I noticed (as a kid) was the font was changed on round X fight, X wins but other than that, it was on point.

To this day, I feel like the 32X was an unfairly judged piece of hardware. Considering the low buy in, and what it achieved, it wasn't half bad. Had developers taken (or even had) the time to work with it, I think we would have seen some impressive titles. Still. It flopped and what we got were some marginally better games than what was seen on any of the 16 bit systems...and some that were just dreadful. Had they decided to make the 32X two years earlier, instead of making it a stop-gap for the Saturn, we would be talking about this piece of tech more positively.

@DejaVoodooDoll If the Genesis/ Mega had a (I've learned this is the preferred nomenclature) PPC, such as the one used in the PC Engine, it would have been able to display far more colors on screen and tackled transparencies. Which interestingly enough, was about the only thing the SNES had going for it. Sound will always be subjective. Virtua Racing was a good example of the Sega running polys (assisted by the cart) quickly and smoothly. If you take time to look at Starfox (still a great game) you will note it runs at a snails pace and can't really do objects and backgrounds at the same time. The 32X, sadly was a rush job. Though it did show itself capable of handling textured poly's. I like it for what it is. The best way to play Blackthorn on a home console.

I couldnt wait for MK2 and the main thing I wanted was better animated standing positions since they were choppy and missing frames from the MK1 version. Kinda funny that they used the smaller sprites in the 32X version instead of the larger arcade ones. The music probably had to be the same because of the chip on the Genesis.
