- Get ready for a paint-splattered adventure with Valspar Trade Vinyl Matt Paint!
At just £32 for 5 litres, this stuff might just be the bargain of the century.
But don't let the low price fool you - this paint means business. I mean, it's called "Trade" for a reason, right?
If it says TRADE on it, don't professionals use it??
So as a professional, I decided to put Valspar Trade Vinyl Matt Paint to the test by slapping it onto my flat ceiling with a trusty 4 inch eco union brush. Two coats later, I was standing back and admiring my handiwork, hoping that I hadn't missed any spots (but let's be honest of course there isn't, I'm a professional!!! lol).
The real test, of course, was whether it would flash when it dried. And the verdict?
Drumroll please...........Flashing... there will be some... it's vinyl matt!!,
What vinyl matt paint doesn't flash when brushed??
But enough about the technical stuff.
Is Valspar Trade Vinyl Matt Paint a good paint?
Yes!
Is it white?
Also yes!
Will it stand the test of time in a rental property?
Well, only time will tell. But I'm feeling pretty confident about it.
And let's not forget about the pure joy of painting. There's just something so satisfying about transforming a drab, boring ceiling into a bright, fresh canvas.
Plus, you get to wear those sexy paint-splattered overalls that make you look like a DIY rockstar - so should I say makes you look like apro decorator, like me ;)
So, grab your brush (and maybe a glass of wine) and let's get painting with Valspar Trade Vinyl Matt Paint!

I can be contacted via either of those platforms.
Nice one Phil 👍
It should be very similar the valspar premuim range...which actually costs more.
I used the scrubbable premium on a staircase, it burnished terrible, but worse still, wiped off with water!, valspar customer service tried bs-ing me, and swerving 'awkward' questions but I got a full refund.
I think they are pushing their luck price wise..32 notes!
Common trade brands are cheaper, painters will stick to them.
Vinyl v contract.... I'd expect flashing after the first one, not the second..but thats paint these days, we should have to pay extra for a premium flat matt, that standard paint did 25-30 years ago!
I use contract on lids if I'm painting the walls, but vinyl if I'm papering as contract can mark easily when wiping excess paste off
Haven't tried the trade but I have tried the v900 premium one. I preferred it to Bog standard Dulux and Crown, but nothing like as nice as Little Green which I tried afterwards. It's scrubbsble though!
Perfect finish as long as you use a smooth roller(Purdy Marathon or similar) on a smooth wall.
It flashes when brushed.
So I'm out.
I’m sure I heard valspar used to do paint for the automotive industry in America long time ago
Hi mate, bit of a coincidence been using Valspar trade tough matt for the first time in a customer house and wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Went on really well. Opacity is really good it's covered in 1 coat. See what it's like tomorrow with 2nd coat. £49 5ltr.
Have you tried it. Keep up the good work, mate 👍
Cheers. That video goes out the 27th. ;)
No picture framing or flashingx
Nothing Phil. It was mixed to farrow & ball skimming stone over white walls
straight out of the tin. I'm quite looking forward to putting the 2nd coat on today.
@@davidstanger9077 that's a light colour, wait till you see the colour I use.
Interesting, looking forward to it.
2nd coat went on lovely.
If it’s an area that’s going to get marked I’d rather used something tougher and if it’s an area that won’t be touched (eg a ceiling) I’d rather use something like Anti Reflex 2 or Nova 2. The combination of marking quite easily and not being able to touch it up usually steers me towards other types of paint.

wouldn't of thought any paint is as good as it was back the 60's its been regulated to death
Not only regulated...profit before quality, this flashing/shearing was never really an issue before...also havevyou noticed how retail vinyl matt has now become just 'matt'?...they have lowered the vinyl content, turning it into a contract matt, (using the excuse of voc content 🙄)....forcing people to buy premium priced scrubbable paints
dulux vinyl matt is very good again must have changed the formula again like it was before 2015 nice and flat got its opacity back say its the best vinyl matt around again especially since johnstones changed theirs for the worst
The tough matt colour are absolutely brilliant. White's are all the same.better to use contract or wickes ultra matt fantastic xx
Good to know!
To be honest with you when are people washing ceilings lol.and also vinyl matt or anything else never touches up properly in a decorators eye.
Try valspar simplicity amazing stuff doesn't flash and it's scrubable it says wipe able on the tin but you can scrub it and for 25 for 10l winner
i think i would say johnstones is the best vinyl matt ive used recently used to be dulux until they changed the formulation back in 2015 dulux trade is the most durable vinyl matt there is bit confusing really as the tin says vinyl but on data sheet says the binder is acrylic i did wonder why it was more durable
What do you think to Isomat Premium?
Covaplus Vinyl Matt is the bizniz. Don’t touch anything from Dulux anymore. Even some its trade paints are like soup. Bastards.
Thanks
Once did a new house with Valspar supplied by house purchaser who was a Valspar rep and had to discount price for my usual gear
It was terrible then he complained that the job wasn’t good enough even though the satin finish was transparent due to the so called u/c being light grey nowhere near white
I followed recommended spec , not a chance of it looking decent or acceptable
You learn by your mistakes
Just needs a bit of xim, not water, nice review cheers👍
You said the dreaded - scrubbable matt! Arrrgggh.
Used some of that stuff at the missus insistence, because of the kids, and bloody hell fire the coverage was unbelievable.
Great opacity but you're lucky to get a single floor to ceiling roll from one load of the roller it's that damned thick!
Which paint did you use
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Wickes own brand, as she'd already bought it.
I did email a complaint to AkzoNobel afterwards though, as it was like trying to paint with bloody treacle.
Worst stuff on earth
Hi Phil what paint would you use for a flat plaster ceilings which I will be using a roller.
What's on it now?
Roller use a 2. Fussy Blokes or Arroworthy microfiber roller...
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Hi Phil the ceilings are new plaster i only but one miss coat of contract paint on the plaster but some areas look shadowy in areas but looking for a great flat finish over the hole of the ceiling.
@@brianbell8536 you thinned the wash coat?
You can fill up any imperfection that may show, then give it all a light sand.
Get some Tikkurila AR2... Ease the first coat, , not too much. Then 2nd final coat can be thicker/neat from the tub.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Cheers Phil for advice will give it a go .
Hi phill thanks for the review 😊…. Just a question Ive used leyland trade vinyl matt for ceilings even though I’ve kept a wet edge throughout you can still see every roller mark… it’s rooms like living rooms with two light sources each side of the room. Any tips on how to prevent this happening. Obviously I’ve kept a wet edge through out used a medium pile trade roller and given it two coats..? Appreciate your reply
Two things.... One you can do easier.
1. Change your paint
2. Spray it instead of brush/roll.
Had a kitchen ceiling last week... Big ceiling... Could see every roller mark.
Sprayed it... With AR2... Looks so much better. Only thing you see now is the bad plastering rimples lol
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Would you say you could spray a ceiling using the cheap £30 HVLP sprayer you've reviewed in the past? Or would it not be up to the job?
Thankyou for your reply Phil. Unfortunately I don’t spray 😢…. What paint would you recommend for ceilings phil? What products do you tend to use ?
The Leyland trade matt doesnt go on that well large areas its a bit soft, the slightly more expensive johnstones trade vinyl far better.
It has its place in the cheaper jobs l suppose rentals etc
@petra we used to use it, but it's a false opacity paint.... Comes off on a damp sponge so no good if you're papering Upton it.
Theirs better ceiling paints out there that doesn't soften back up with water.
If I'm being honest I don't really see the point in putting a viynl matt on a ceiling as it's not like anyone goes round wiping down there ceilings! I don't think you can beat armstead white contract matt it's cheap and cheerful and opacity is amazing! Even if it's thinned down by like 50 percent
Yeah but try wallpapering up to it. Or when you dust a cobweb off the corner a few years later. Contract not up to it
@petra don't blame you haha I've done the same although the retail stuff doesn't quite have the opacity like the trade paints
@JK26 6 yea I get that it's not meant as a finish coat but it does the job in my eyes and I haven't ever had 1 complaint from a customer.
@@JK-tv1px false opacity paint comes straight off with a damp sponge. Cheap for a reason.
I've had good results recently with white Dulux Trade Flat Matt on ceilings. It's far better than their standard Vinyl Matt which is awful stuff.
What trousers are you using?😊
ProDec Advance
So is an empty tikurilla bucket better than an empty crown or johnnos bucket????😁
Isomat even better.... A 3ltr tub a great size
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 😂😂
I always give vinyl a swerve, there's better out there at same price point
Please say your recommendations
@@robbennett9631 for ceilings... ar2, eclipse, jonos perfect matt, or tecnos
@@Twistednutz Thankyou 😃😃
@@Twistednutz the eclipse emulsion even though it’s a contract matt does it still stop the flashing?
@@robbennett9631 I've never had it flash, I always make sure to keep a wet edge
Vinyl matt has always been bollox
Worst paint ever ... Peels , won't wipe leaves marks and bubbles in moist environments... Even if you use premium kitchen and Bathroom .
The 57% ... 1 star reviews proves it
Most vinyl matt is pony compared to what else is on offer and only really fit for ceilings.
