  • In this video we discuss LOUD blow off valves BOV on a supercharger and why it is annoying to have a loud one on a street application. The loud hissing sound is constant on a supercharged setup and will quickly become annoying listening to the loud HISS sound while cruising.

Yup. Experiencing this with a centirfugal supercharger set up on my honda. It's fun for a little then it gets annoying. The other way to remedy this is by running 2 blown off valves. That way, instead of one diverting , say 10 units of air and being loud af, 2 can divert that same air but at 5 units each drastically cutting down the sound however you have to spend on yet another BOV

I run a blow off valve with a novi 2000 on my 97 cobra. I’m using a blow through meter so I don’t need to recycle the air. Same deal loud as hell when cruising. It makes 21lbs of boost, so when you lay into it then back off it sounds awesome. It sounds like a blow off valve to the tenth power. I realized that the supercharger is always spinning, The thing that you brought up is; its always spinning even when you are not using it. Even when decelerating. So yes, it’s always blowing which gets annoying. It sounds like an airplane. I’m tempted to put the bypass valve back on but then no whoosh sound ever. To whoosh or not to whoosh. That is the question. It’s a toss up.

You can't just "put a heavier spring in the bov or tighten the adjustment screw down so it doesn't leak" on a supercharger setup. If there's nowhere for excess belt-driven boost to go during partial throttle or no-throttle+high revs, you'll blow the intake piping off.
Stop thinking that superchargers work like turbos. They don't. They are belt driven, making boost even when you don't need it. If you "tighten down" a bov in this case, where is that 3psi of pressure in the intake going to go while your foot is barely or not on the throttle during light cruising or downhill engine braking? It's going to blow the charge pipes off if it can't vent because you stupidily put a bov on there and tightened the adjustment down. Re watch his video. He is trying to explain this to you, but you cavemen are like "Derr... Just tighten dat bov down..."

It's belt driven. It does not spool up. There is not lag from low exhaust pressure. It builds the boost instantly from belt rpm. Exactly! Blow off valves may sound cool, but they're not as functional on a supercharger as a bypass valve is. I've always ran the Vortech bypass valve that Vortech supplied with the supercharger. I rarely see/hear a BOV on a supercharged vehicle, but when I do I immediately know it's one of two types of people. It's either a track car that rarely gets driven on the street, which has a legit reason for a BOV
Or it's a young kid who thinks they're super cool, when in reality their build doesn't make sense(and doesn't make much power either).

IMO if you go centrifugal then go with a BPV/Wastegated setup. You've got a V8. Who needs all that ricer pssshhh noise? To me if you're looking for performance, then a wastegate is a better mod than a BOV on a centrifugal setup. With that said I've always personally just had positive displacement blower setups since 06.
