This performance of Walter Berry is outstanding. A great deep bass bariton voice and sung with feeling. The man died in 2000. I know only very few artist that can reach this level for the Mathew Passion. Respect.

I always admire the elegance of Richter in conducting by heart the pieces, the way he moves his body, his arms, his hands, his fingers, it has a sculptural quality, even his face and looks when giving instructions is simply a joy to watch. The filming is also superb.

If your computer keyboard does not have the letter "ß", you can produce it by holding down the "Alt" key and then typing the number 0223 on the right hand side Numpad. (At least on a Windows PC. -- Not sure about Linux and Mac.)
But the letter "capital B" is a completely different letter (and sound) than the letter "ß" in the German language… :-) ("ß" is pronounced like the English "s", while the German "s" sounds more like an English "z". And the German "z" would be equivalent to an English "ts"... Like in Tsunami.)

Since I first listened to this 40ish years back, I have not even been interested in listening to other versions. I can't even finish other versions without coming back to this one like after 2 minutes the most. Maybe have not listened to Dieskau's, but if I did & can't remember...

Same. Matthias Goerne's version is a close second for me, but this is my favorite. Most versions are too fast and don't have anywhere near the warmth and lyricism of this one.

(still me, sorry. just to say I've just heard a most beautiful Dieskau's version also under Karl Richter, probably from the 1950s or 60s. only now I realize the main difference to my ears & sensibility is that Berry is a bass whose voice plainly enchants me. Dieskau, here especially, also enchants me but very very differently, being a baritone but more than that.)

This is a stunning interpretation of this piece. I find it impossible not to be moved by the swelling phrases that speak of both joy and sorrow... It is outstanding.
I am currently working on this piece as well, and I would also like to comment on the commenters who said that they are not ready for this peace because they are tenors or high baritones. I say SING WHAT GIVES YOU JOY! There are no limitations to what is possible if you have confidence! =)
