Yes! EXACTLY what I was thinking! I actually looked this up to see if that part was Tuba Mirum x3 Although I do prefer Confutatis, Introit-Kyrie and Lacrimosa.
Walter Berry is just amazing here and his superb breath control and reserves shows us why he had such a wonderful rich and full tone and long career. Thank you.
Why in gods name have I come so late about this supernatural beautiful recording??? Berryˋs sonor, warm basso; Janowitz with her angelic voice at its best; a silver-bright Schreier and a perfectly conducted Ludwig. Oh, what a joy to enjoy... Thank you so much for this precious jewel-gem of true fine arts!
Thank god for the technology that allows us to see the great singers and conductors that we know by name and by hearing. I am thrilled to see Peter Schreier in this and other great works. Note how he barely moves, he doesn't use energy dipping and weaving back and forth. he is in control of that great voice with focus and no lost effort in moving around.
Yes..It is great. But let me tell you something...Bass must be of german or english ascendent because the way he says "SPARGEN" it is not latin.Spargen is like saying sparyen in romanic languajes.I am spaniard and romanic languages like spanish, italian or french.Sorry my english.
He was Austrian, actually ; I am Frech, and, when I studied Latin at school, I was instructed to pronounce "spargens" "sparghenns", exactly as he does. Some decades ago, I would have been taught to say "spardjenns". What is more surprising is "sepulchra"n which he pronounces "sepulshra", and not "sepulkra" as I would have expected. But anyway... the fact is indeed his astounding breath control (and beauty of voice).
Hard 'g' is the pronunciation used in Classical Latin - soft 'g' is Ecclesiastical Latin. Here each vocalist is using a combination. Hard 'g' in "Spargens" and "Regionum" (Classical), but 'ch' pronunciation (Ecclesiastical) for 'sepulchra' and 'judicetur', for example.
It’s not a mixture of different pronunciations, but the way Germans used to be taught to pronounce Latin (just as French, English, etc. used to have their own peculiar ways to do that).
@Marilyn1122 This was released on DVD in 2005, but the original recording was made in 1971. I was particularly impressed by Walter Berry as most recordings drown out the bass's "Sonum", but he manages to make it come through seemingly effortlessly. I am not sure if he really does the whole phrase in one breath as it is possible to take some air in on the two s's before Sonum, but it looks and sounds seamless. How fortunate that this recording exists, and how good it is for a 40 year old one!
Here's the translation if anyone wants it: The trumpet will send its wondrous sound throughout earth's sepulchres and gather all before the throne. Death and nature will be astounded, when all creation rises again, to answer the judgement. A book will be brought forth, in which all will be written, by which the world will be judged. When the judge takes his place, what is hidden will be revealed, nothing will remain unavenged. What shall a wretch like me say? Who shall intercede for me, when the just ones need mercy?
Mr. Berry... I tip my hat to thee sir. Simply astounding technique. Relaxed face with flawless breath control. Showing only that the piece is "easy" for him. Singers.... take note.

@Martin Couvez: It is actually the Trombone Tenore, so it technically be "2nd Trombone" who plays the solo. Trombone 3 was bass, and Trombone 1 was alto.
Generally I don't like high-pitched voices, but in this rendition both soprano and tenor are very impressive. Because of them I keep restarting this clip again and again.
It's interesting that none of the soloists move their heads in the slightest while singing, and the sound (of course) comes out clear as a bell. I think it's quite a contrast with many soloists today who seem to move about rather more when singing.
@simone qa Actually they're singing in Germanic Latin. When the piece was composed, Italian Latin wasn't the standard. Yes. That important technical detail at the beginning and his modulation of that one long breath does so much for the expression.

what i like the most about this interpretation is the tempo and the great pronunciation of latin.
I agree. This is an unmatched quartet.
The Latin is terribly pronounced: a hodgepodge of Classical and Ecclesiastical

Mozart didn't think that the alto trombone (trombone 1) would be appropriate for this. That's why the solo is in the second part (tenor trombone).
