Bach: Matthäus-Passion, Aria "Mache dich, mein Herze, rein" Fischer-Dieskau

  • For this Easter season, the recitative and aria "Mache dich, mein Herze, rein" from Bach's St Matthew Passion.
    Notes based on The Sacred Dramas of J.S. Bach by W. Murray Young:
    Recitative: The climax of the entire work comes in this recitative/arioso movement with its following aria for the same bass voice. Joseph of Arimathea is the actor expressing his personal emotions as he attends the burial of his Master. A motif of celestial peace permeates the whole movement a mystical aura unique in Bachs works which moves the listener by its text and entrances him by its sound. Schweitzer thinks that Bach expresses the tranquil peace of the falling twilight in this arioso. It is certainly a miniature tone poem well suited to the descent from the cross.
    Aria: This aria is the other outstanding movement in this Passion. Its rhythm shows the suave melody of a siciliano in 12/8 time, but it is the soloists feeling for the emotions expressed in his text that makes the listener realize that he is listening to a pure, spiritual music, as Joseph of Arimathea proclaims his lifelong devotion to Christ and his rejection of the world. The motif of calm in the first two lines (the da capo brings it back) is replaced by a motif of joy in the last four lines. The soloists artistic runs on begraben (bury) and the effective orchestral ritornelli before, halfway, and at the end, make this aria a masterpiece.
    Nr. 74: Rezitative (Bass)
    Am Abend, da es kühle war,
    Ward Adams Fallen offenbar;
    Am Abend drücket ihn der Heiland nieder.
    Am Abend kam die Taube wieder
    Und trug ein Ölblatt in dem Munde.
    O schöne Zeit! O Abendstunde!
    Der Friedensschluß ist nun mit Gott gemacht,
    Denn Jesus hat sein Kreuz vollbracht.
    Sein Leichnam kommt zur Ruh,
    Ach, liebe Seele, bitte du,
    Geh, lasse dir den toten Jesum schenken,
    O heilsammes, o köstlichs Angedenken!
    At evening, hour of calm and peace,
    Was Adams fall made manifest;
    At evening, too, the Lords redeeming love.
    At evening homeward turned the dove
    And bore the olive-leaves as token.
    O beauteous time! O evening hour!
    Our lasting peace is now with God made sure,
    For Jesus hath His Cross endured.
    His body sinks to rest.
    Go, loving servant, ask thou it,
    Go, be it thine, the lifeless Saviours body.
    O, wondrous Gift! O precious, holy burden.
    Nr. 75: Arie (Bass)
    Mache dich, mein Herze, rein,
    Ich will Jesum selbst begraben.
    Denn er soll nunmehr in mir
    Für und für
    Seine süße Ruhe haben.
    Welt, geh aus, laß Jesum ein!
    Make thee clean, my heart, from sin;
    I would my Lord inter,
    May He find rest in me,
    Ever in eternity,
    His sweet repose be here.
    World, depart, let Jesus in!

    There will never be anyone to sing like this again in another hundred years. What beauty of tone, line, legato and magnificent control- quite simply awe inspiring. How lucky we are to have his recorded legacy.

      Well, a quite different style, but equally expressive, is German Baritone Andreas Wolf, in a performance from 2013 or 2014, with the Netherland Bach Society, it is here on youtube. I have listened to Wolf sing the Mache dich maybe 50 times and I never tire of listening and watching his expressions. I recommend to all of us who love music to listen. Not to lessen how great Fischer Dieskau but to show that the march of human talent goes on forever.

      Exactly. Never will be a more beautiful melisma on “be-graaaaaab-en.” Never a more beautiful vowel on “rein.” Really amazing that this 1958 recording stands up as well as it does in view of changes in performance practices over the last 60 years.

      There's just something so overwhelmingly beautiful about his voice. It stayed that way until he left this earth. It touched me deeply as a teenager. Still does today, as I approach 70. So grateful for his gift.

    Fischer-Dieskau singt hier mit derart sanfter und samtweicher Stimme, seine Musikalität steht ohnehin außer Frage. Bach verdient die besten Musiker, Fischer-Dieskau ist einfach unschlagbar. Ich stelle mir vor, wie genial eine Zusammenarbeit mit Herreweghe oder Koopman gewesen wäre.
    Technische Perfektion!
    Ein paar Sekunden Dieskau ersetzen 100 Gesangsstücken, wenn man alles begreift, was er macht, muss man gar nicht studieren.

    Fischer-Dieskau has a wonderfully effortless top, which has a tenor quality envied by all baritones i should think.
    He is immediately recognisable, as all great singers are.

    Some may quibble about performance practice but I have never heard a more beautiful and moving rendition of this aria from an "young" Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. It tears at my heart every time I listen to it.

    How can annyone, ANNYONE dislike this???

    • @sybrandb1
      @sybrandb1 8 років тому +3

      +miralvonhawaii Obviously the performance is in many respects stylistically incorrect, so, though the performance is not as bad as I expected, it is still not a good performance: the orchestra is way too big, they use dynamic contrasts which are not in the score, and the tempo is too slow, and there is too much legato used.

    • @Cucucucu803
      @Cucucucu803 7 років тому +14

      I am sorry for you good sir. It means you don't feel the music at all. Even though it may be not stylistically correct all the time, it is a moment of creation with which I am 100 % sure even Bach would agree. You must listen with your heart not with the knowledge that you got from books. Plus, no one is even sure how it was played during Bach's time, so concentrating on the music is more important than the so called "style".

    • @junglemonkey2310
      @junglemonkey2310 7 років тому +5

      Whhhhaaaattttt?? Are you serious. Don't listen to this, go find yourself another piece of music to listen to. Maybe "twinkle, twinkle little star" will satisfy you. If you have nothing nice to say, then better not say anything at all. Or maybe YOU can do better, or is your knowledge from books?? Obviously. Dynamic contrasts that are not in the score, how interesting, please explain what this is. Too much legato too,according to the specialist.

Then, together with the sublime music of Bach, the soul can be transported to a kind of bliss which makes me feel close to God, which makes me forget everything but gratitude for such beauty. What do people do, who can’t access or value this world??

      It took me three years, lol, to fully understand the text. He asks first that his heart be made pure before he may bury His Savior along with all of his sin which the Lord took upon Himself at the cross. Both the purification and the burial make his heart a fitting place in which Jesus may reign forever. He also rightly tells the world to no longer occupy a place in his heart and to let Jesus enter.

    To all here who, after listening to this recording and being unimpressed and unmoved, have felt compelled to dismiss it as inauthentic and insult those who are deeply touched by it: this recording was made at least a decade before the serious research and re-examination of 17th and 18th century performance practice even began. Yes, that research concluded that we should begin performing this music differently (different kinds of instruments, different vocal forces, different tempos, different dynamic ranges, etc., etc., etc.) But that research is certainly imperfect. Some musicologist next month will probably determine that male altos wouldn't have been used in major church works, and that the baroque oboe was actually made of different wood and should sound different from what we thought had been proved. ARE WE JUST GOING TO INVALIDATE ALL PRIOR PERFORMANCES?????? I think this "Mache dich, mein Herze, rein" is true to the music, the text, and the spirit of Bach's vision, as best we know them. And DFD was a treasure.
    I've spared you my opinion of trashing other people's religious beliefs. Be glad for that.

    The bass aria begins 2’35”.
    I find it fascinating that someone finds this music brings sadness. That to me is a clue of objective Art. There’s something extraordinarily beautiful about the final bass aria of St Matthew. Perhaps for me it brings solace, joy, others, sadness. By its evocation we identify the disconnection in our hearts from perfect love.

The singers in addition to DFD are Ernst Haefliger (evangelist and tenor arias), Irmgard Seefried (soprano), Hertha Töpper (alto) and Kieth Engen (bass) as Christ. Wonderful recording over all if you appreciate Richter's way with Bach, which I certainly do. :) It is discontinued but there are certainly copies available at various places.

    Yes, a vintage year. I have those Bach arias and may upload more someday. "Es ist vollbracht" would be great. I did upload one from that recording, "Doch weichet ihr tollen" a while ago. Thanks for the comments.

      @@Kuba-ll5iy I just looked it up cos he mentioned it... but this is a VERY religious song. I'm surprised THIS IS what he would take with him to the island. I mean, this isn't Mozart or anything secular. Personally I don't quite get the appeal of it, because you DO have to have had a very strong Christian upbringing to get such strong feelings from this.
      It's really surprising to me, because it shows that the ideas of modern western Christianity are still very deeply entrenched in Richard's heart and probably always will be. He has a very deep affinity to it, much more than he ever lets on publicly. Of course it's a very specific interpretation of Christianity, not so much orthodox or early middle eastern Christian. Much more a Germanic version.

    You would have to have the complete Passion recording conducted by Karl Richter. This was the only time that DFD recorded the 4 bass arias. As you know he always sang the part of Christ in other recordings.

    You certainly may. The very last painting is "Lamentation of Christ" by Matthias Grünewald.

    According to the booklet with the DGG Archiv recording, the translation is from Eulenburg's Miniature Score (No. 953) with no attribution as to the translator. It is quite bad, particularly as it may make it seem as if this recitative and aria are a commentary by Joseph of Arimathea, whereas they are the reaction of the observant Christian. Wherefor: "liebe Seele, bitte du" "dear soul, ask thou" NOT "beloved servant"!!
    But Fischer-Dieskau is still THE BEST! And it's great to hear it here!
