I was fortunate to travel the length of Tamil Nadu, seeing all the great temples along the way. The three Great Chola temples are extraordinary architectural marvels, of such majesty that they can rival medieval French cathedrals. Aside from these royal medieval temple complexes, there are several ancient temples that are old as the oldest myths and legends of South India. Most prominent of these are the temple at Srirangam and the famous Madurai Temple. People have been worshipping at these sites for time immemorial, and the inner sanctums are truly unique spaces to visit. A trip across South India is a must for travelers seeking to gain knowledge of lesser-known great civilizations.
Rajahnate of Cebu : The Last Chola(Tamil Nadu, India) Chola Expedition Philippines: In the 14th century,Sri Lumay, a descendant of the Tamil king Raja Raja Chola, was sent to Cebu (Philippines) to prepare a base for the expeditionary forces of the Sumatra Cholas (Indonesia), but instead he established the Rajahanate of Cebu on the island. In April 27, 1521 in the "Battle of Mactan" chieftain "Lapu-Lapu(Cilapulapu)" and his warriors defeated Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and delayed the Spanish occupation. The Rajahnate itself folded in 1565 when the last King, Sri Tupas or Felipe Tupas, cousin of Rajah Humabon was defeated by another Spanish navigator, Miguel López de Legazpi’s soldiers in April 27, 1565 and subsequently signed the Treaty of Cebu, heralding the end of the Great Cholas, one of the longest ruling dynasties in the world(200BC - 1565AD).

7:45 no credible source for slavery in pre-islamic India exists especially in South India. They were lower castes but they were still not slaves and had their own families, houses and temples. Calling them slaves would be like calling Medieval serfs slaves though even Serfdom is more brutal a practice than any practiced in Tamil Nadu.
serfdom or casteism are types of slavery, where you can't ever dream of getting anything more than your masters (zamindaar or your lords) allow you to have. Especially considering neither of them were allowed to buy any lands, and can only marry with the permission of their masters. So you see their life were no better than slaves, they lived for their masters pleasures and nothing more.

Pandya is good. Strong relations with the Sinhalese Kingdoms, resulting in a diffusion occurring of Tamil Hindu-Buddhism. Pandyans did a lot of pioneering in that area. I believe the Pandyans were the correct zenith for the Tamils- confined to their own land for the most part and focusing on themselves. No Rabban Dynasty financed Chola Empire being used as a Pitbull to reshape the world like the the Rothschilds would later do with Britian and now America.

I hope you can do something on Pandya considered to be the longest reigning empire in history. Great job ❤
First of all: Thank you for taking interest. India is very diverse and should be discussed in details, in parts. I see nearly all foreigners mention our history as Indian history and that lead them back just till British or mughal empire. This is our history. It is diversed than entire Europe; geographically, ethnically, culturally and yet united in all aspects. Shame is our school text books also mention this part of history as "ancient history" and winded it up in 2-3 pages. Just take an example of Chola dynasty.. they ruled for around 1500 years. (Yeah. Not 150 like Britishers) . It's not a joke and surely not to ignore. Temples they built 1000 years ago are still standing tall and worshipping is practiced in them. There are many more who contributed to this Indian land and should be studied. Thank you again. ❤
Nice inteoduction to the Cholas... a lot of the modern impression about the Cholas is due to the Tamil Author Kalki's Novel Ponni yin Selvan ( Son of the Golden River) about the early years of Raja Raja and the murder of his elder brother...

It is not enough to use merchant ships to wage war on a country. Over 1,000 warships and more than a million soldiers, the Chola navy established supremacy over the Bay of Bengal, earning it the ancient moniker ‘Chola Lake.’ Notably, women were also part of their naval forces, actively participating in battles. One comment I do have and I have seen this a lot is India as a country or concept or identity came out in the 20th century. There were considerable efforts India took to built this identity of one nation and one people. The framing of the subcontinent’s history by defining as ancient India may not appropriately capture the regions diversity and civilization. But this is simply a trend I have seen. Parts of Northern SL was indeed invaded and occupied by Tamils for very brief periods of time. Furthermore, the Chola kingdom itself was invaded and occupied by Sri Lankan Sinhalese kings for brief periods of time. Nevertheless, neither the Sinhalese in South India, nor the Tamils in Sri Lanka, succeded in establishing long standing kingdoms in the each other's territory, or changing the ethnic or religious composition in a substantial and permanent way. Sri Lanka's largely Sinhalese Buddhist people have a long independent history. They are descended from Indo-Aryan peoples of North India and speak the Sinhala language, which is derived from Sanskrit/Prakrit and is closely related to modern Hindi. In contrast, Tamils are Hindu Dravidians from South India. Over 2,000 years, Sinhalese have allied themselves with other Dravidian peoples (eg. people of Kerala and Pandya) and other South East Asians to defend themselves against the Cholas.
No Sinhalese dog ruled Tamil Nadu. And the only reason the Chola’s couldn’t hold onto Sri Lanka longer was because the Pandyas (a South Tamil Nadu Tamil Kingdom) allied with the Sinhalese and so the Chola’s couldn’t fight a two pronged war for that long.

I respectfully disagree. The Chola Empire achieved far more than the Pandya Kingdom. They were active expansionist with great army but more pertinently a world class naval power. They built phenomenal architecture (in fact vast majority of temples, dams and agricultural infrastructure) was built by the Cholas. They set up a robust trade post through out South East Asia and to some extent Yemen and Djibouti. The Cholas created treaties with vassal states and detailed tax revenue system. The Pandyas outlasted the Cholas but did not outshine them.
Kannada rulers outside Karnataka Outside of Karnataka, Kannadiga rulers throughout India cultivated a fragmented regional culture. Historians such as D.C. Sarkar as far back as 1959 have bemoaned the inexcusable ignorance of the Kannadigas in this regard.' The Badami Chalukyas who were established in the Sixth century have not only occupied an important place in the history of India but they spread all over India, there has been no study about the 'Kannadiga culture' which was expanded by many Kannada royal families including them (*There is ample evidence to prove that, for several centuries from the foundation of the Chalukya House of Badami in the sixth century A.D., the Kannadigas were not merely one of the most important peoples on the stage of Indian history, but they actually spread over wide areas of India. However, neither the characteristics of the Kannadiga culture nor its impact on the areas outside Karnataka have so far been studied. The world of scholars will be grateful to the Karnatak University if it is successful in initiating studies in this interesting subject."). Kannada dynasties that ruled outside India are as follows: Kalinga East Ganga (5th century), the Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi in Andhra (6th century) (probably also the Kadambars of Kalinga), the Palas of Bengal and Bihar (8th century AD) are mentioned in records of Karnatas (Karnataka soldiers). Matrimonial relationship between Palars and Rashtrakutas. This may be due to the fact that the soldiers of Bengal (11th century) were of Karnataka origin. And the Sena dynasty called "Karnata" as a result of the conquest of Eastern India by Somesvara, the first Chalukya, and his son Vikramaditya, the sixth. The progenitor of that dynasty is called Samanta Sena (c. 1050) in his records as 'Dakshinatya', his grandson Vijayasena (c. 1095) as 'Brahmakshatriya' or 'Karnata Kshatriya'. His descendant was Ballala Sena (12th century AD). They were Kshatriyas of the lunar lineage. (The "Karnatars" of Nepal are of Sura lineage). His son wanted to bow to the Turkish Muslims. A mound called "Ballal Deeb" is recorded near the Sena capital Nabodwipa (Navadwipa) (Ballal-Kannada personal name. deeb=mound). *Rashtrakuta dynasties are seen in many parts of India. The Rashtrakutas of Karnataka (8-10 centuries) conquered up to Kanyakumari and attacked Ceylon as well. Their jurisdiction included the entire South Western part of present day Maharashtra. Chaulukkaras of Gujarat (10th-13th c.) Originally Chalukkas of Karnataka Chaulukkaras of Gujarat (12th c.) or Queen Nayaki Devi of the Solankis was the daughter of the Kannada ruler Kadamba Permadeva of Gove. (Permanadi was the daughter son of Vikramaditya, ruler of Goa), defeated Ghori Mahmud, who had invaded her Chaulukya kingdom as a widow, in 1178, and received the title of "conqueror of youth" from Prithviraja Chauhan of Delhi. Among them is the name "Barappa". Even today there are people with the surname "Solanki" in Gujarati. (The word 'Solanki' is a cognate of the word 'Chalukya'.) The Yadavas of Devagiri were Kannada rulers. Rashtrakutas of Manpura 499-7 CE), Rashtrakutas of Birar (7 CE), Rashtrakutas of Orissa (11-12 CE) were Kannadigas. Rashtrakutas ruled Madhya Pradesh (760-865). Rashtrakutas of Kanoji are the same (11-12 CE). In their 12-13th century inscriptions, during the reign of Lakhan Pala, a Gauda Shaivaguru named "Ishanashiva" built a Shiva temple at "Sinhapalli" in Haryana (palli-palli. This is a Dravidian word. Rathodas (Rashads) ruled in Rajasthan. ) Rashtrakutare 13-14th centuries) Karnataka is the origin of the system of indicating the administrative divisions by the number of villages in Hestikundi, Dhanop, Malavas (see also the Karnataka kings of Banavasi 12000). It is significant that the administrative units were indicated by the number of villages, 'Gramapati' was the revenue collector of one village, 'Dashagramika' was the revenue collector of ten villages, 'Sahasra gramapati' was the revenue officer of a thousand villages. (Sinha : Mithila under the Karnatas, P. 136-7.) The islands were also influenced by Karnataka. The Brahmi script at the head of the inscriptions there is a script of the Kadambara period. The influence of Karnataka is the reason why the year "Saka" is indicated in seven eighth-century records of Indo-Chinese Indonesia. (The Pallavas did not use the 'Saka' year: the Badami Chalukyas used it from the 6th century onwards. It was the Karnataka influence that introduced the decimal system numbers there. (I am grateful to DC Sarkar's article for the above information). Even the Senas who ruled in Himachal Pradesh (12-13 AD) were of Sena lineage from Bengal (meaning their origin was Karnataka). Lakshmana Sena of Bengal was the last Hindu ruler of that region. His descendant Rupsen went to Punjab and ruled there; His son Birsena went to Suket in Himachal Pradesh (1233 AD) and built a kingdom there. It was merged with India after India's independence. Raja Ashokpal Sen, Thikka Umeshwar Singh, the descendants of those Sens, are still living in the palace of the town called Mandi. Needless to say, he is originally from Karnataka.' Literature, sculpture, astronomy and medical sciences developed during his time as a worshiper of 'Kalika'. If Vijnaesvara's "Mitakshara", a valid legal text in pre-modern India, was composed during the Kalyana Chalukyas, Jeemutavahana's "Daya Bhaga" popular in Bengal dates back to the Senas: needless to say, both dynasties belong to Karnataka. famous Poet Jayadeva (kriti-Sanskrit "Gita Govinda") court poet of Lakshmanasena (c. 1200), Mahishasura Mardini of Bengal or Durga (Kali) originally from Chamundi of Karnataka; Maybe that can't be right. Outside Karnataka the Kannadigas also ruled northern Bihar and Nepal: they were the "Karnataka" kings of Mithila who were called "Karnatakas" in their records. I have solved that deficiency to some extent by working on the "Karnata" dynasty of Mithila who ruled North Bihar and Nepal." It has come to my experience that there are many advantages for Kannadigas themselves in undertaking the study of Kannada rulers abroad. This article kannada rulers outside karnataka is an extract from Dr. M. Chindanada Murthy s book karnataka- Nepal Samskrititka sambandha.

Tamils then: Hindu chads leaving their mark on history creating a famous heritage Tsmils now: we aren't himdu sarr, north and south india different sarr, we proud of history sarr, but remove surnames which show our heritage sarr
I don't believe ancient or early medieval Tamils are Hindus except for the one from the higher class like kings, warriors and priests, even then they just adopted the culture that they were taught by the priests. I'm saying that because if you have been to Tamil nadu you might have seen small temples and shrines built for the local deity and if you ask the locals about the temple or about the deity presiding in that temple they'd say they are a reincarnation of so and so major god but if you dig a little deeper you'd find no connection to anything. And almost all families in Tamil nadu have a deity that they consider to be their family's protector and 9 out of 10 time it is one of those local deities from their home town and none of the major gods that appear in Hindu mythology. Finally as to why I don't believe the ancient or medieval Tamils are Hindus is the Tamil texts that you can find from that period. Famous texts like Silapathigarm or Manimegalai does not really speak about any aspect that is associated with Hindu mythology, granted Illago adigal, the guy who wrote the aforementioned text took up Jainism and became a monk, but wouldn't he have at least hinted at things that could have some kind of relation to Hinduism if he thought that Hinduism is the major religion of the Tamils whom this text is meant for? While it is easy to find songs and poems about Hindu gods and goddesses in the language it is equally easy to find works that are completely ambiguous as to which belief that they are based on. The ancient and medieval Tamils are very creative people they needed something to believe in they made up these deities, after all with archaeological evidence we Tamils have always been idol and elemental worshipers. When Hinduism started to spread people just found them more convenient because the religion has structure and most of us like things to be structured. Nilakanda Sastri's book is biased and hided lots of facts..Youvmay want to refer Ko.Deivanayagam from Tanjavur University for more in detailed infomations on Chola Kingdom .
He was probably talking about merchants from Chola kingdom itself and shipped built in South India and used by South Indian merchants. And it is true that merchant ships where turned to military ships when needed. Arabs were the only ones who were merchants.
The part about not having a navy is not correct. They have an extensive classification of naval ships of different categories similar to modern day speed boats, destroyers, battle ships, transport ships etc.

Lot of mis info in here. Title misleads from the content provided. There was no looting like how britishers did globally. Sri vijaya wasn’t a wealthy nation which was defeated to be looted. India was the richest country in the world during that time. The wars were fought by cholas to defeat srivijaya who joined forces with pirates in the silk line attacking traders. Sri Lankan king tried to kill Raja Raja Chola with their spies getting caught. That’s when Raja Raja Chola decided to end the Srilankan king by war and defeating him. You need to revise the words which have used in this video. It’s one of the greatest empire with loads of manpower for army. Cholas didn’t have to hire army people from Middle East which is again misleading. We only used their technicians to build our own ships.
There's always been looting in war, it didn't start with the British. Chola's own inscriptions mention taking slaves form Sri Lanka. It doesn't matter that India was rich, looting was an established way to pay for military campaigns
Rajahnate of Cebu : The Last Chola(Tamil Nadu, India)
Chola Expedition Philippines: In the 14th century,Sri Lumay, a descendant of the Tamil king Raja Raja Chola, was sent to Cebu (Philippines) to prepare a base for the expeditionary forces of the Sumatra Cholas (Indonesia), but instead he established the Rajahanate of Cebu on the island.

Aryans are not people. ARYA is a Sanskrit word for "noble" person such as Kings.
The Chola navy comprised four primary divisions: Dharani, akin to modern destroyers; Lula, comparable to small warships; Vajra, capable of swift attacks like modern warships; and Thirisdai, formidable warships armed with devastating weapons.

Kannada rulers outside Karnataka
Outside of Karnataka, Kannadiga rulers throughout India cultivated a fragmented regional culture. Historians such as
D.C. Sarkar as far back as 1959 have bemoaned the inexcusable ignorance of the Kannadigas in this regard.'
The Badami Chalukyas who were established in the Sixth century have not only occupied an important place in the history of India but they spread all over India, there has been no study about the 'Kannadiga culture' which was expanded by many Kannada royal families including them (*There is ample evidence to prove that, for several centuries from the foundation of the Chalukya House of Badami in the sixth century A.D., the Kannadigas were not merely one of the most important peoples on the stage of Indian history, but they actually spread over wide areas of India. However, neither the characteristics of the Kannadiga culture nor its impact on the areas outside Karnataka have so far been studied. The world of scholars will be grateful to the Karnatak University if it is successful in initiating studies in this interesting subject.").
Kannada dynasties that ruled outside India are as follows: Kalinga East Ganga
(5th century), the Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi in Andhra (6th century) (probably also the Kadambars of Kalinga), the Palas of Bengal and Bihar (8th century AD) are mentioned in records of Karnatas (Karnataka soldiers). The progenitor of that dynasty is called Samanta Sena
(The word 'Solanki' is a cognate of the word 'Chalukya'.)
The Yadavas of Devagiri were Kannada rulers.
This article kannada rulers outside karnataka is an extract from

400yrs of Mughals loot & plunder, 200yrs of British plunder, has left a scar to the civilization.
However big the empire/kingdom, be it any religion, they all drown in the winds.
So, what do people still pursue? Do people pursue the building of Kingdoms, or do they pursue a spiritual path ?
Thank you so much
The cholas also left thr hindu culture in the indonesian, molucass and malaya where the traditional marshal and jumpi or mantras or the hindu incantayion are still being pracised by the malays and indonesians. It is even told that the Bugis sea wartiorx from molucass island are from the remnants of the cholas who marriex local women and setylrd in the Sea Islands which wrte occupied by the Cholas army. The cholad taught dhip building and groomed sea faters in the DeAdian islands . There are cholas cmonuments and artifacts in Se Asian countries but are neglected or renamed as local artifacts eg in malaysia.

I just saw this video. Nice video. But your pronunciation of the river Ganga is wrong. Ganges is the how the Britishers pronounced. It is pronounced as Guhng·Gaa locally. You are making the same mistake when you pronounce the name of Rajendra Chola's capital Gangaikonda Cholapuram. This is not a criticism. You wouldn't know this obviously until someone tells you. Otherwise I thouroughly loved the video.

11 th Century Europe was living primitive life . Under Cholas 11 story Gopuram with intricate carvings were built .
There were many financial developments in Europe during 11th century such as share investment and state bonds. No one ever had architecture as great as India though
Not true highly developed greek and roman, southern european civilizations was there since ancient times. And by the time of 11th century almost all of Europe had christianity as state religion and had high civilization and culture. That's why they became huge superpowers in the world by the time of 17-18th centuries.

In India we were ahead of Europe till 12 /13 th Century. Then because of external aggression progress slowed down . Like Europe we did not have any Renesainc period . Again British Raj kept all industrial progress to nil. British took all raw material at very rates and took to Britain, used factories there to produce goods and send the same to India . Extremely grateful for your interest in Indian history, apart from butchering the pronounciation of the Tamil words and names.
Great effort. 👍
Keen follower of the Cholas. Great objective analysis. Enjoyed the content and been to each of the temples and palace excavations you showed. Good job bro
Chola don't attack Srivijaya. Srivijaya attack chola. Here is an excerpt from a letter written by a Song dynasty official to his emperor. "Chola kingdom is subject to Srivijaya. This is why we wrote to its ruler on course paper with an envelope of plain stuff."

Tamils then: Hindu chads leaving their mark on history creating a famous heritage
Tsmils now: we aren't himdu sarr, north and south india different sarr, we proud of history sarr, but remove surnames which show our heritage sarr
they are not hindus.
Go back in time and ask Raja Raja if he's a Hindu. He will look at you in confusion
That is how I believe Hinduism came to be the predominant religion of the late medieval and modern Tamils.
The pronunciations are killing every Tamil watching these 😢 but thanks for the content

Nilakanda Sastri's book is biased and hided lots of facts..Youvmay want to refer Ko.Deivanayagam from Tanjavur University for more in detailed infomations on Chola Kingdom .
Wrong info: They borrowed ships from merchant to bring army??? Arabs has written about the massive naval fleet.. research on that.

At that periode Bramins were not higher potion in tamilnadu as you mentioned in the video. In other parts of india well. They even sent away who betrayed the county. And not bramin owned the temple that's happend after 1400-1500 vijayanagar kingdom came to south. the mantra changed in sankrit not in tamil. Bramin were replaced as priest. highly saw women turned as prositute. eventhough in tamilnadu was always opposed that but telugu kerala suffered a lot because they accepted sanskirt and the vedas. upper nad lower by birth system. In tamilnadu people belived asivigam. which contains shivam, science and vishnu based, pillair is the sithargal, murugan, indriran, ayyanaar = ayyapan, kottavai, amman,. later on they added stories and degrade tamil gods.

Don't justify it
True.
War is cruel and the invaders are always almost bad to the defeated people.
