OH MY! Walnut Octopus! - Wood Turning
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2022
- I knew there must be something in this piece of wood but it took me awhile to figure out how to get it out of there! With some creative cutting and turning, success! Walnut is one of those woods that is just a pleasure to turn and this piece was no different. Finished in shellac.

Phil, this looks exciting, but boy do you have your work cut out for you. Can't wait to see the end. (can I look and then go back?) Kind of like reading a mystery and reading the conclusion first.
No peeking! 😊
Phil,
It’s obviously a pentapus 😜. And now you have delimbed it! Oh dear 🧐.
Keep the aspidistra flying!
Paul
😊
A lot of people say don't mess with an OCTOPUS or you will get hurt!!!!, but you had enough courage to tame it with out a whip. When you cut off some of their tenacles, it didn't even fight back!!! I couldn't hold back my tears, when you cut them off, I am a lot like you, i throw away very little wood away, it can be used to make something nice. That turned out to be the most beautiful octopus I have ever seen. You did such a marvelous job cutting on it, I didn't even hear it let out a scream on time. GOOD JOB again. ❤ KEEP ON TURNING!!!
Haha, thanks, Howard, for you fun comment! 😄
A fine ole man is our Phil.
His fans all think he's a pill.
He turns and he whirls
While his bowls are a twirl.
But the spin never makes him feel ill.
A pill? LOL! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I say it with love my friend!
Simply Beautiful.
This bowl is a real treasure! I love the richness of the wood and the magnificent grain. I saw an owl's eyes before you mentioned ET. 🦉 And yes, thanks to your friend for supplying the octopus! Phil, you sure know how to find the beauty in the most unusual pieces of wood. Thank you for the very enjoyable video! 😊
Awesome! Thank you, Gwynn! 😊
Howdy Phil, walnut with multiple crotch combining into one beautiful piece. I can hardly wait to see what you reveal. ❤️👍🏻🇺🇸
😊
The chuckles at the beginning were priceless, Phil!! Instead of ET, I see an owl!! Beautiful bowl. With some of the leftover tree, you make. Set of candlesticks to make it a set!!
Sorry, make a set of candlesticks to have a whole set.
I see the owl, Leona! 😊
Thank You Phil...Thank You Valerie.... When I first saw that Walnut I thought "NO WAY"... After you mounted and started turning ... Ah yes I see now... Phil this is an exceptionally nice turning with the knots, the Walnut wood, bark, everything...You are so accomplished at turning the live edge bowls, you make it look effortless (I know it is not)...The before and after are hard to believe Phil.......TM
Thanks a lot, Tuffy! It's always fun to turn Walnut, so much variety in color and grain and, bonus, it cut's pretty easily! 😊
Absolutely beautiful. I am wondering what make lathe you use as you seem to have much more swing over the bed than I do.
Walnut has got to be one of the most beautiful woods on this planet. I really love the smell when I’m cutting it. In fact I love everything about it. Valerie certainly is a sweetheart to send you something like that, Phil. Another awesome video from you, my friend. Take good care of yourself, buddy.
…..Gord
Agreed, Gord, Walnut is always a pleasure to turn because it turns easily and you know you are going to get something that looks great in the end! Valerie is a treasure for sure! Thanks for watching and commenting, buddy! 😊
Finally figured it out! Its your vision of these pieces of raw wood.
Everyone else sees a chunk of wood that needs split for the fireplace. You see a work if art.
😊
I woulda sworn Valerie was just messing with you but look what you turned out! Really fine!
Michael, you should know better by now. The moment I saw this piece in the black walnut pile, I grabbed it and wrote Phil’s name on it! How could I not?
😊
Absolutley beautiful Phil!
Thursdays midnight your postings send me off to bed smiling, so thank you for a good end of this day❣️
Glad you enjoyed it, Sara, thank you, sweet dreams! 😊
Another lovely piece, Phil!
Appreciate that, Billy, thanks, buddy! 😊
I see a great owl face in this piece.
Cool, Jessi! 😊
Yay! Now that's more like it Phil. Gaps, inclusions, whorls, and imbedded knots. Excellent!
😊
You can really appreciate the the gift of nature in this piece with all of its knots the wavy rim and all that wonderful bark, that’s a really nice bowl Phil, thanks for sharing it with us!
You are welcome, thanks for watching! 😊
Impressive as always! And amazing that you could turn an octopus into a clamshell. I look forward to each of your projects.
😊
Phil ALWAYS reads and responds. Even when im just being a smart ass (I do that way too often).
Haha, thanks, Sam! 😊
Another GREAT job Phil. My son and I really enjoy watching you!!!
😊
Magnificent piece! Always appreciate your patient instructions! Hope all is going well with your health recovery. Thanks, Phil!
Doing pretty good, Peter, thank you! 😊
What a gorgeous piece, Phil. You did a great job of trimming the octopus to maximize its usefulness. I admire your vision!
Thank you, Tom! 😊
I love Black Walnut! We have so much of it here. Wish I could get other stuff to enjoy. Nice job as always Phil.
😊
Phil, I came back to watch this one again. (double cool) I wanted to check to see if you could do it again, and LO and BEHOLD! It turned out just a beautiful as the first time. 😉 This is one of my favorites! Blessings Phil, take care. Rick
Haha, thank you, Rick! 😀
Skilful turning. Fabulous wood grain. Unbelievable finished natural art at it’s best thanks to Phil 🌈🌈🌈
Thanks, David! 😊
Walnut is an absolutely gorgeous wood. I’m working with a slab that is nearly 4” thick by 3’ tall and 11” wide. I’m sanding it and when done I will paint a giant gnome on it. I wasn’t sure what you were going to make out of that octopus but wow! You never cease to amaze me at how you bring out the beauty in a chuck of wood.
Looks great
Sounds like a great project, Tina! I'm sure it will turn out beautifully! 😊
It looks amazing. Who’da thought that hunk of wood was hiding such beauty. Another job well done. 👍
Surprised me, too! 😊
"Ain't she a beaut Clark". I love it beautiful work 😍
😊
Such beautiful colour in this piece of Walnut & lovely grain created by the crotch. Your ability to find beauty in any piece of wood that is sent in to you is virtually legendry. You have this 'never say die' approach that enables you to create Art pieces from almost the impossible. When the average Joe, like me, is confronted with an 'Octopus' we would run for cover, but not you. This is a beautiful bowl filled with SO much character one could get carried away going through them all. Let's just settle for a magnificent bowl as a result of your renowned skill with so much to admire. A truly great one chum. Stay well & get healthier by the day, Cheers, Don from South Aust.
Thank you, Don! I hope this finds you in your shop creating your own art pieces! 😊
A sailor one day, while out sailing
Thought he heard someone screaming and wailing
The source of the shout
As he later found out
Was an octopus tied to the railing
LOL!
A couple of nice candle holders either side and the bowl filled with sweets would grace any table at Christmas.
😊
That bowl is abolutely beautiful. I'm so glade to see you back to your usual self. The chemo must be over.
The chemo is over, but... 😊
Cow. Holy cow, Phil. What a joy to watch. Thanks. I need to find some octopus walnut.
😊
I can see why you enjoy turning walnut Phil. Very cool. Cheers Deno.
😊
I like😢the way you’re brave to turn unwieldy chunks without fear of catches, this gives me heart to give it a go too
Just remember, John, light touch, you'll be fine. 😊

If I could afford to ship you a walnut log, I would! Walnut, the king of woods! My top 5 favorite bowls I've made, 4 are walnut.

Walnut burns my nose hairs but I love turning it!! Mask and face shield on!
You’ll have to excuse me I’m at the king biscuit blues festival in Arkansas watching this video and listening to the fabulous thunder birds!

Nature at it's finest. And you bring it out Phil.
😊
Beautiful bowl, Phil. Great job interpreting that piece of wood. Here's a thought - flatten the sides of those branches, glue them together side by side and turn a platter from that.
Bill
Great idea, Bill, thanks! 😊 We'll see what Valerie has to say about it.
I hope you had a nice birthday Phil. Yes I think walnut is one of the prettiest wood to turn. I think you picked the nicest spot of that crotch to turn. I hope you are doing well. Thank you for a great ending for an evening. Hope to see you next week

Very nice indeed, a beautiful piece of wood. How you see things in the wood blows me away. I would have never seen a bowl in that piece of wood. That's what makes you an artist. Thanks again for all your hard work and thanks for sharing it with us. 🌿 ✨✨✨✨✨ 🏅

Man o man, Phil. That looks like glass! Very nice!

Phil, I never saw that in the wood. Your X-ray vision is still the best!

Once you've done a few you never want to go back to normal and round! 😊
Great piece from a fantastic artist keep the enjoyment coming
😊
I am rather new to turning but have been a finish carpenter and cabinet maker since 1977. So wood isn't new to me however when I d>shoveled turning about 6 months ago I can't get out of the shop. I just love natural bowls 🥣 and you make it look so good. I just finished a birch boll turning and I just love the natural inch around here. I live in British Columbia just north of Vernon and our natural birch is spectacular. I wish I could send a picture I'm so proud of it..😁
Keep up the good work and I love your wood sense.
I also don't like spell check....
Thanks for taking your time to watch and comment, Gary! 😊
Phil as always a beautiful piece of work if I had 1/64 of your talent I’d be a happy turner

😊
WOW, just wow! Another beauty Phil.
😊
Artristry, creativity, and narrative. Relaxing and enjoyable. 😃
Thank you, Ron! 😊
See how much prettier this bowl is than last week? I wasn't trying to be mean in my comment last week, I was trying some "tongue in cheek" humor. I hope I didn't offend and if I did, I sincerely apologize. I enjoy your channel so much and look forward to your post every week. God bless you Phil. Take care.
I'm never offended, Jerry. I don't expect everyone to like everything I turn. That would be boring! 😊
That is beautiful. Walnut is a pretty wood, and you used something most would throw away
No such thing as firewood, Richard, if you have a lathe! 😊
I love walnut and this turning is beautiful.
Thank you, Herbie! 😊
Another beautiful piece Phil, thank you and have a good day.

Me too, Carol! 😊
It is always amazing to watch you do your magic!
Thank you, Wayne! 😊
WOW! Just WOW, Phil! Very nice piece!
😊
I had a walnut tree root that looked similar too. But I knocked off the roots and made a chalice from it. With all the swirl in the chalice it looked really good. Was a present for my sister.
😊
Phil you have a magic touch with the walnut it is beautiful , I watch a lot of your turning, I do a little turning myself but not to your quality , my favourite Timbers are Huon pine , Tasmanian sassafras, Tasmanian Blackwood and macrocarpa pine , I love to turn clock faces small boxes with lids and when I was first learning a friend taught me how to turn a set of champagne goblets out of different Timbers . Thank you for sharing your vlog from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
You are keeping busy doing what you enjoy, Roger. It's hard to beat that! Thanks for your comment! 😊
Wow wow wow!! Absolutely beautiful! One of my favorites. Just beautiful 💖
Thank you, Nicole! 😊 Cheers!
