  • I knew there must be something in this piece of wood but it took me awhile to figure out how to get it out of there! With some creative cutting and turning, success! Walnut is one of those woods that is just a pleasure to turn and this piece was no different. Finished in shellac.

Phil, this looks exciting, but boy do you have your work cut out for you. Can't wait to see the end. (can I look and then go back?) Kind of like reading a mystery and reading the conclusion first.

Thank You Phil...Thank You Valerie.... When I first saw that Walnut I thought "NO WAY"... After you mounted and started turning ... Ah yes I see now... Phil this is an exceptionally nice turning with the knots, the Walnut wood, bark, everything...You are so accomplished at turning the live edge bowls, you make it look effortless (I know it is not)...The before and after are hard to believe Phil.......TM

Walnut is an absolutely gorgeous wood. I’m working with a slab that is nearly 4” thick by 3’ tall and 11” wide. I’m sanding it and when done I will paint a giant gnome on it. I wasn’t sure what you were going to make out of that octopus but wow! You never cease to amaze me at how you bring out the beauty in a chuck of wood.

Such beautiful colour in this piece of Walnut & lovely grain created by the crotch. Your ability to find beauty in any piece of wood that is sent in to you is virtually legendry. You have this 'never say die' approach that enables you to create Art pieces from almost the impossible. When the average Joe, like me, is confronted with an 'Octopus' we would run for cover, but not you. This is a beautiful bowl filled with SO much character one could get carried away going through them all. Let's just settle for a magnificent bowl as a result of your renowned skill with so much to admire. A truly great one chum. Stay well & get healthier by the day, Cheers, Don from South Aust.

My favorite wood! A friend and I bought about nine hundred board feet of walnut lumber almost fifty years ago. As I was in the Navy, I carted that walnut from Maryland to Florida, Florida to Maryland and back to Florida, then to California and finally to Virginia, where I retired. I have used almost all of it, but still have about ten board feet of 1" by ten-inch wide left, plus a couple of 4X4s that were supposed to be bedposts. I recently made a base for a trophy for my son's fantasy football league and almost didn't give it to him because it was so pretty!
    Great work on that bowl!

I am rather new to turning but have been a finish carpenter and cabinet maker since 1977. So wood isn't new to me however when I d>shoveled turning about 6 months ago I can't get out of the shop. I just love natural bowls 🥣 and you make it look so good. I just finished a birch boll turning and I just love the natural inch around here. I live in British Columbia just north of Vernon and our natural birch is spectacular. I wish I could send a picture I'm so proud of it..😁
Keep up the good work and I love your wood sense.

A lot of people say don't mess with an OCTOPUS or you will get hurt!!!!, but you had enough courage to tame it with out a whip. When you cut off some of their tenacles, it didn't even fight back!!! I couldn't hold back my tears, when you cut them off, I am a lot like you, i throw away very little wood away, it can be used to make something nice. That turned out to be the most beautiful octopus I have ever seen. You did such a marvelous job cutting on it, I didn't even hear it let out a scream on time. GOOD JOB again. ❤ KEEP ON TURNING!!!
