I mean if you look at it this way, Roga and Midori were one rank apart, on the east side, had the exact same record, and now are 3 ranks apart. Doesn't make alot of sense. #23 in my 4th GTB (tyerenex), your vids have helped me a ton and i really enjoy it!
@@sumospiffysbarandgrill 56th, that's 9-6 that's some sanyocku (butched spelling) GTB right there. I was the most off on Kirishima, thought his landing would be harder, and messed up my JOI picks quite a bit. I had Gonoyama at M1W, thought process was, and probably misremembering, but there being a trend of them giving guys the full promotions they deserve around that level and not giving the S1E a comfy landing if someone actually earned being a rank higher than them. So I guess I was actually the most off on Gonoyama.
I think your explanation about Midorifuji and Hokutofuji is the most rational that could be found, and I think that's why they went that way. However, do you think there's a realistic possibility that the committee didn't felt like doing them dirty was a huge loss because they both had a disappointing 2024 overall (1 winning record and 5 losing records each) ?
Not a realistic one. You can always get into subliminals or subconscious motivators, but that's going way too deep in to psychoanalysis of people we'll never meet.
I think since they really r trying not to punish goi guyz too much .They kept the celling to m9 single digit .Meaning they capped them to single digits so they dont go in double digits and get back up more easily . Second thing i thought abt kotoshoho is that he really is being getting hang of joi unfortunately he got injured this basho .So they tried to push him just enough and not too much .I guess if he decides to not participate in january basho he would end in lower juryo numbers like 10 or 12 .The more down he went the more it seems that the committee doesnt care for joi wrestlers and injured ones . I remembered this type of treatment was given to asonoyama and he eneded up being magaeshira 17 and them last of juryos . So probably that .
I can just imagine Hokutofuji's face when he saw the banzuke. Not a happy camper... And I haven't been following sumo for that long, but is it less likely to get a demotion at 7-8 in the middle ranks due to congestion? Like, Roga seems to get lucky everytime. And when he caught an 8-7 he got a +2.
It's entirely dependent on what goes on around them. In a sense, the three in the middle were quite unlucky, since they couldn't be promoted despite there being plenty of space above them.
Kotoshoho interesting decision, midorifuji and hokutofuji what?! I knew I was going to put chura and oshoma in the wrong place and mess up my banzuke. I also messed up the m1-m3e barely, had Kiri in front of takanosho and got the tobi, atami, Gono sequence just off. 60 points, highest I’ve ever scored!
Maybe they perceived midorifuji's success as less sustainable because of his size, hence the over demotion? Are they above making desicions based on preferences like that? Idk
Don't you just love it when the org running the competition can't be trusted to a point of it giving a middle finger to a rikishi because of them being irrational is the most plausible explanation 🤣 Anyway, this time I tried to guess the banzuke, but scrapped the idea because filling out the huge gap in the upper middle of maegashira ranks was too weird, but it kinda makes a bit of sense now. Next time I'll try for real! However, I have a question: is there any rules on how people are promoted and demoted between the divisions? Is there a cap on how many people could be demoted to Juryo, and vice versa? Let's say like last 7 guys of Makuuchi got their asses beaten, and top few (obviously less than 7) Juryo guys got 10+ wins, but then upper Juryo ranks got their 8-7s, 7-8s, and maybe even lower. Do people with terrible scores stay, or do people with whatever winning records get pulled up?
There are very few rules to this and a lot of guidelines, some of which change more often than others. In a situation like you're describing, at some point the committee has to decide what records in makuuchi can stick around and which absolutely must be demoted to juryo even if it means bringing up someone who, by the numbers, really hasn't earned it. Those tend to be case-by-case.
The things you got wrong are the things that almost everyone will get wrong. I compounded things by messing up 2e-3e and putting my boy Chiyoshoma too high. Results still not in but I think you have a shot.
They saw how Midorifuji and Hokutofuji scored on the BFF scale and said: "It's fine. They won't get mad, they're too nice for that." 😂
Merry Christmas 🎄 and Happy New Year To All The Sumo Fans. Thank you sumo spiffy.

The results on the page right now are from last basho; the server where the new results go in is down right now. But who knows, maybe you did better!

Excellent video, excellent analysis, entertaining as always. Here's to an exciting 2025
Awesome video! The thumbnail itself gave me a chuckle.
I put Midorifuji at 11e. But it was my first entry to GTB, so that's a lucky guess.

RYUDEN IS RYUDONE ITS A GOOD DAY TODAY
From about M7 or M8 down looks like there might have been a dart board involved.

Hokutofuji deserved it. He kept his rank with 6-9 in september. Nishikifuji should be in juryo for his 6-9 too.
May be true, there were a bunch of failures back then, though. As a fan of the Cap'n I'm disappointed of course.
If someone actually put 7-8 midorifuji -2, it's more likely they misclicked than that they are the chosen one. 😂

That thumbnail makes me want to do the kangaroo.
I had Midorifuji at 11E in my GTB.
The Japan Sumo association lets the sake do the math.

@@sumospiffysbarandgrill Thanks! So I guess sticking to the math and voice of reason (to an extent) will do the trick most of the time.
I'm skeptical that you have the right reason for Hokutofuji. I don't know the real reason, but I doubt that's it.
The things you got wrong are the things that almost everyone will get wrong. I compounded things by messing up 2e-3e and putting my boy Chiyoshoma too high. Results still not in but I think you have a shot.
ignored bt everyone, higohikari is back in jonokuchi, after a year of banzuke gai
He's really in no condition to compete anymore. His maezumo matches back in March and again last month were downright scary to watch in parts.
JSA are much smarter than all of us. Moreover, they are in the middle of the actual sport. They decide. Point
Does Nabatame stay in Juryo?
Yes, J14E
Stomp Stomp! My Hokutofuji doesn't deserve this poor ranking!
First on the first banzuke!
The wisdom of the elders told me that 7-8 does not == -2 and man..........
Be careful. You might get sued for that thumbnail. 😂
Annoyed. Every place I disagreed with you, I was wrong. Should have known better.
