The old XL5 with the metal heat sinks on it will run 3S. I used to run 3S on my old slash 2ed and it lasted quite a while until I tried to do a burnout
I’ve done this on my XL-5 stampede. The generation of waterproof XL-5 escs that were the first generation to have the low voltage cutoff with the black heatsink fins from like 2011-2012 will run 3s lipo and the low voltage cutoff will work with the 3s pack. I was nervous I would burn something up if I ran it in warm weather so I ran it in 40 degree temperatures and it held up fine. It has 2s velineon speed.
@@yeatotlas6723 the titan 12t runs fine in my buggy with a 27t pinion 🤷 it does 40+ mph on a 2s battery, as well. That's in a 2.5 lb(about 1.1 kg?) WLToys buggy, model #124019. There's a vid on here with a guy going even faster than mine with a buggy that's like 1.5 inches shorter than mine, WLToys #144001 I think. I think his did right at 45 mph with a 2s battery. But these aren't Traxxas rc's, either. We're just using the Titan 12T 550 because its a nice little quality motor, unlike the random Chinese motors on AliExpress and Banggood that have exagerrated specs most of the time.
My girl's run there bandit and stampede xl5 escs with 2s lipos all the time only burn up one motor due to fishing line being wrapped around one of the wheels.
If you are geared properly and the rig is not too heavy it should work fine for along time. But if you are trying for top speed you can definitely put more power through a Titan 12T motor that it can handle with the XL-5 HV esc. For how long depends on how much of the brushes you had left when you started cooking them.
This video kind of helped me, I have a brushless/then I run 2S and 3S on. I have the original XL ESC, that came with it that I have ran 2s on. My daughter, however has a HB 905 brushed. this rig has a ESC receiver combo and I have a small three cell battery sitting around and I was wondering if it would work in her model being a brushed system
So why does the xl5 HV look exactly like the old xl5 with the heatsink before traxxas made it crappier and removed the heatsink? The old xl5 was also rated for 8 cell NiMH which is 9.6v, pretty close to 3s lipo. So who thinks the old xl5 is the new HV one? I think so, I ran my xl5 on 3s in a granite today and it was fine.
That was the esc that came on my rustler 10 years ago and it used the the same brushed motor it's still a great option I think they're $69 the brushless is 160 + and all it did is make the raptor slash uncontrollable and know the the new Vkl slashes come with TSM and newer transmission for less than I put in that so if you get a VXL kit for the Ford raptor please make sure you get a extra body shell or your sweet ride after it flips over doing 30ish and just slides down the road on its top just saying good way to keep your license bodies nice
U can buy slider/ bumper blocks that mount on top of body from RPM, they protect body during slides. Also if you stick to a cheap surpass hobby brushless system a 3650 motor and 60A ESC combo in the 3300-3800kv range, it won't be crazy on 2s lipo, just a little more than stock and u have the option to run 3s lipo on a system like that for more power when ready.
IM a Nitro Head. First RC was a NITRO SLASH 2wd. And Nitro Engine's are not THAT hard to Start. Ya, I had a few issues Tuning and Starting. But, now I do not have any problems with the TRAXXAS 3.3 or the 2.5 engine's. If I do have an issue. I will just put the: HIGH and LOW NEEDLES. Back to the Factory Settings AND that usually fixes the Problem. Also a New Plug 🔌 can help.
need help please, new to the rc world..my local hobby shop is still shut down(N.Y) Well,i just bought online some HOBAO'S and they came set up with deans plugs..my friends tell me to switch up quick fast.that the connectors spark at times and that's no bueno..what do you think.Also it looks like it setup for two batteries.. can i switch it up to just run one battery or is there a reason this is set up like this?? i have the the VT if that helps.i have a roller gtb that i want to work on so this will help also in deciding what battery type i use for that one. the other is a nitro i'm having a blast with lol

I was thinking of doing this with my slash but then just chose to get a sidewinder 4. the performance difference just with the NiMH battery is amazing the only problems I have had have been the driveshafts. I got a 3s lipo for the thing and it flew down the street. (both figuratively and literally on the roof) If you want to brushless swap your slash you need to buy heavy duty driveshafts (I am using integy ones that cost $23 and they are great) also you will need a wheelie bar, more stub axle carriers, and maybe aftermarket tires
castle sw4 is good and costs around $115 but you will need some heavy-duty driveshafts and more heavy-duty stub axle carriers (metal might be best). I am saying all of this because you are going to break a lot of things. also if you are using a 3s lipo, your car is going to flip onto its roof. (good luck)

U really can't at that stage, u could put 4s lipo in, but you will only get a few runs in before smoking the ESC or motor. Your at the limit of that setup

Don't move the radar gun. Point it at a position where you think the car is at its fastest and let it pass the gun without moving it at all. Following the car will make all yours speeds wonky. Also, is it the camera lens or are you climbing a hill on your speed runs?

Use the chat feature on the traxxas website. Don't call them. The chat feature is easier. The rule is that if the car is over 30 days old, then you have to pay 50% for the electronics. If it's less than 30 days, then it's free.
Those motors are garbage...20 minutes on a 2s and it gave out. which is fine, I wanted a brushless one in there anyway..I still used it with the traxxas swap program no questions asked...working or not.
The radar gun is probably supposed to stay stationary, moving it to follow the car will throw higher numbers

U had the esc backwards turn it around and the motor wires will have more slack and the esc wire will not seem as long

I've used a 3s on stock rustler xl5 only thing that happened was the brushes on the motor took a hike, and they disappeared

I ran my 2wd rustler xl5 on 2s and the motor lasted about 10 min. They say they are compatible but that Titan motor hates lipos lol.

The Traxxas Bandit VXL brushless ESC will also run 540/550 brushed motors.

You have to hold a radar gun completely still or the readings are not accurate.
But the XL5 3S esc has a 21turn motor limit. So you're lucky the ESC didn't fail on you.
They keep moving the speed gun! If they stop following the car, just let the car pass through the radar 'line', no weird numbers!! Lol. Stay safe!

I bought the brushed 2wd slash ended up buying the vxl3s and a 2s batt. Installed the high speed gears. I wonder how fast it would be with the 3s batt
Also you could just put a GPS app on your phone and strap it inside.
The old xl5 had no overvolt protection so u could but it was unreliable

It will take 14 volts all day long I have done it in my kids power wheels with a car battery it works fine

I have the Slash 2wd vxl and I can't even hit top speed because of how light it. The air ends up picking it up around 40mph

That's all it does is look sweet. Aluminum eye candy will break whatever its connexted to. Get RPM parts they flex instead of snap.

Man, I got tired of repeating esc within a week of buying an rc car. I've moved on to calling it the controller instead. Its wayyyyyyyyy easier.

my advice to anyone always get the traxxas slash 4x4 vxl it's the best of slash and you get so much fun out of it . 4wd is the right move .
