"Dark Side of the Moon" is best listened to in it's entirety, from beginning to end, with great headphones on, in a dimly light room. Those of us who bought the album in 1973 did that many, many times over. Laid on my bed, blacklight and lava lamp going, lighting my "Castle on the Hill" and Floyd posters, from the record, until I was asleep. When I bought the compact disc years later it became truly an awesome experience without interruption.
@@vernhoke7730 The LP I have listened to at the time was bought by my late brother, who would be at the same age with you now, but we lost him in an accident in a very young age. @@billhabenicht4321, I disagree. I like Comfortably Numb, but I find it repetitive and considerably longer than it needs to be. Time is an emotional roller coaster that soars to the heavens and then comes back down to Earth. I’ve seen people be moved to tears by the guitar solo in Time. Never seen or felt anything close to that when listening to Comfortably Numb.
Back when this album came out, they did not have music videos, maybe filmed Live performances, generally, we would listen to at least an entire side of an album, more often, flip the vinyl disc over, and listen to the album in its entirety.
For sure, m8. In fact, I think because there’s so much about aging and death in post-DSOtM Floyd, and I developed a degenerative neuromuscular disorder in my mid-20s, and thus feel about twice my age (I’m in my 40s), I have come to prefer listening to pre-*Dark Side* Floyd, when listening for pleasure, although *Shine On* will always have a special place in my heart, as ‘Syd’ Barrett and I had a special relationship, and his death hit me very hard, though we knew he was not in good health. My first wife was a bit younger than me (born in 1973, the same year as DSOTM), so I introduced her to Pink Floyd. The first time she heard this she freaked a bit because she had a "thing" about loud bells. But she did fall in love with PF almost as much as I do. With the passing of every year, this song has more meaning as you get older. And what can you say about the guitar solo of David Gilmour? He never failed to amaze. The best way to listen to Dark Side is laid back in a bean bag chair, headphones, and in the dark.
It will Eventually become the top selling album of all time as it still resurfaces on the charts from time to time and never stopped selling, they continue to gain fans, the others at the top not as much.
The thing about Pink Floyd is that they dont feel the need to fill every music space. Restrain and silence are part of the song and they use them very well to build a mood or a feeling. They dont feel like they need to put as much notes as they can in the tempo but they will send you off tempo once in a while to keep your attention and the arrangement make it that you dont notice it as much as you should. They were not the best musicians, but they could build that mood/feelings like no one and their lyrics are most of the time spot on and sometimes hits you like a ton of brick. You're still young and I guarantee that if you listen to it again in 20 years, it will hit you very different but still very true to what you feel. Hence why they remains timeless, even 51 years after this song was recorded
There is a good reason this is thought of as one of the best Rock Albums of all time. I am glad you got to experience it. Dark Side of the Moon is meant to be put on while you are laying down and relaxing so you can get lost in the sauce of this incredible masterpiece.
For the opening session, the rhythmic tic toc tic toc etc. is a bass guitar. Roger mutes the strings with his palm and plucks the strings. This sound represents the constant surge of time, never changing never ceasing. The bass drum that starts at a slow and steady boomp boomp, speeds up as the section passes. Represents a heart beat that speeds up as time progresses. The whole passage is an instrumental representation of the lyrics that follow.

DSOTM, An album that charted for so many years that it proves great music can span generations! Pink Floyd was definitely in and beyond their time. I remember their music took over the airwaves and stereos when it came out. Loved your reaction to this timeless group.
One of the greatest songs in rock and roll -- and certainly THE best use of roto-toms ever. It's like this song was the reason the were invented. EDIT: Thank you, Mike.
You need to listen to dark side of the moon in one sitting as it’s a concept album and was intended that way when created. I remember being 11 in 1979 and lying on my BR carpet with DSOTM playing entirely with my eyes closed and getting taken to a new dimension. The only band I’ve ever known to do this without substance enhancement. Pink Floyd is just its own genius genre. Great reaction:)
In concert....the entire stadium was black in the beginning......and when he started playing the toms.....he had neon drum sticks.....and each time he hit the skins....they would change colors. Mind boggling.
Pink Floyd: Expanding Human Consciousness for over 50 years.... Looks like Maggie caught the wave. Great Gig In The Sky must be next! Enjoy the ride. Peace to you on your path. (been lucky enough to see them 5 times over 50 years...)
A sweet voice and legendary guitar playing make this band one for any generation and for many more to come. I recall as a teenager listening to Dark Side Of The Moon and my Dad walked in my room, sat down, and proceeded to play air guitar. Sweet memories are made from this group of timeless artists.
Dark Side Of The Moon is best listened to in its whole from beginning to end. Hard to do a reaction to but it lets you understand the depth of the masterpiece and why it was on the Bildboard 200 for 700 weeks straight! Relax and kick back as you said, use high quality headphones and a dark room for the best experience!
I never thought 10 years would disappear quick like this song said, and it did. Don't get too caught up in your work or routine, keep some adventure in your life or you'll be staring at those gray hairs you and your friends have.
I was 8 years old when I first heard this album. Blown away is an understatement. From that moment, I was a Pink Floyd fan for life. As previously mentioned, this song gains more meaning as you get older. Much of Pink Floyd's music is like that. It's meant to make you think, contemplate, and reflect.
Thank you for honoring us with this reaction. Since you study voice...you have to hear the studio version of The Great Gig In The Sky. That is the song that comes after this one on the album. However, no lyrics on this one, it's all about the voice. Thank you again .
Also a Mike here. Always loved your reactions, and Pink Floyd are my fave band (joint top with Queen, followed both since the 1970s) I think it's more effective if you do the lyrics after. The way we all first found them, was either by just hearing the album (vinyl) then looking at the lyrics after, or reading the lyrics (from the album cover) as the song was playing. They have more impact that way, when you don't know what's coming. Especially this song.
The last portion of the song harkens back to the second song from the album, Breathe, and it is often referred to the 11th song of the album, “Breathe Reprise”.
the album "Dark Side of the Moon" was on the Billboard charts for 980 weeks.......we would listen to the entire album, beginning to end, lying back in the dark. through headphones
Having a very bad day. Saw a new Maggie video and it got much better. Saw it was a Pink Floyd reaction and I am now smiling. Thank you. Loved seeing them do this live back in 1994 at Ohio Stadium. Needed this in my life today. Thank you, Maggie. Thank you, Mike.
You're mostly right, it's the kind of song you just sit back and soak in. But in truth, that's the best way to enjoy the entire album, from beginning to end. It's perfect...
I LOVE when modern opera (...and not only) artists give such a HIGH assessment to the songs and work of my favorite rock band from childhood!! Yes, they are gone and will no longer be there, but their music and their songs have remained with us FOREVER!! Good luck in life! You are very beautiful!!
I know every generation says it about their time, but there really was no better time to be a teenager than the mid-late 70s ...the music, omg the music... There will probably never be another time with pop/rock music as good as it was in the 70s.
David Gilmour's solos have always had a distinct quality: rather than filling the time with every note he can, he chooses the notes that fit, and he makes every note count. All of his solos approach the singable, as you already discovered.
The audio engineer who mixed this record was called Alan Parsons; he went on to start his own group-the Alan Parsons Project-that is hugely underrated despite being one of the most far-out, mind-bending progressive rock bands of all time.
Us students used to listen to this and found the lyrics profound. We speculated on what we would be doing 10 years later. That was nearly 50 years ago. The standing joke was that you could hear Dark side or Tubular Bells being played in every Hall of Residence at all times of the day. Probably true at that.
1973 16 years old I had already been introduced to Floyd in college with the Meddle album still one of my favorites went out and bought Dark side of the moon and it blew me away it is considered by many critics to be the best Album ever produced it is Estimated to be one of only four albums to have sold over 45 million copies worldwide, it's spent more than 970 weeks, or the equivalent of over 18-and-a-half years, in the Billboard top 200 album charts in the US, which is a record.
The way the background singers are used to move the song along is nothing short of amazing…..especially the transition from the solo back into the lead vocal….
You'd love the album version of GREAT GIG IN THE DKY - it's perfect for your Opera Reaction commentary and knowledge. You fans will love your insight. The song has a female singer.
Yea, it's supposed to transport you to somewhere else. We used to call it Acid Rock. The songs all run into each other to form a theme, like one long story. The end of the last song has heartbeats that match the heartbeats at the beginning of the first song so it can be played on a loop. You put the album on repeat, kick back, drop a hit of purple microdot and let the music take you to the dark side on the moon..
"This song seems like one where you just kick back, close your eyes, relax and just listen." You just described the entire album. It's all one continuous flowing piece rather than a collection of songs, really, and should be listened to that way. With headphones, in a dark room. Having said that, if you haven't already, listen to the following song, the album version, of "The Great Gig in the Sky." The vocals on that are AMAZING. They were performed by Claire Torry, a singer the brought in, who was given very little instruction on what they were looking for. She made it up on the spot.
I was 18 going on 19 when this masterpiece came out on the Dark Side of the Moon album. I'll be 70 years old this year, and this song has become more personal. So, I'm trying to make the most out of the time I have left.
In 1973 I was sitting in a friends cars listening to Dark Side of The moon smoking grass and drinking beer and floating in La La land. 10x5 years later I still listen.
This album is meant to be listened to from first to last in one beautiful experience!😊 hard to believe this is 50 years old now, I was 13 or 14 when I first heard it, shit I’m old!, The time meaning really did not sink into me when I first heard this being so young, but now, oh hell yeah it has so much more meaning now.
Hi Maggie. I recommend you to take a look at Pink Floyd's Pulse. It was their last tour. It has two parts. The first one with tunes from several albums, some newers and other olders ones. The second part is Dark Side of the Moon complete, plus two themes from The Wall, Confortably Numb and Run Like Hell.
7:50 Definitely. That actually describes this whole album. Dark Side Of The Moon is one long chill, zone-out, and vibe. I listened to it while watching the sun set while on a beach. 🙂↔️🤤
Time, great song. You're right we literally would kick back, relax with a little help I might add. This album "Dark side of the moon" was on the top 200 for 950 weeks. No album has ever done that. And I believe has since gone back in the top 200. Great choice Maggie. Another of many good choices would be "Money" "it's a gas".
lol....i'm 61 and me and friends when we were like 16 or 17 knew these 2 brothers a little older than us who's mom worked graveyard shift so we would all kick back in their living room which was really comfortable with big couches and they had a good stereo system with big speakers and we would all smoke pot and listen to dark side of the moon and just melt into the couches..it was super mellow but thats what we did and this was in southern california outside of los angeles.
Pink Floyd in their younger days and with Syd Barret were quite psychedelic. They carried that feel, if not full on style, with them into the 70s. This is why they are so "trip" friendly and you really don't need drugs to take that trip.
I remember, back before "rock-n-roll was phased out someone went around and asked the biggest names in Rock n roll were asked, what is rock n roll, most of the bands gave answers like you might expect - "its got to fast or hard, or high energy, etc... David Gilmour's answer was "its whatever you want it to be. I thought it was perfect.
Thank you so much for the review! My favorite “rock” band and certainly one of my all time favorite albums! I have a humble request- A Song For You sung by Donny Hathaway.
Don’t know if you’ve reacted to Shine On You Crazy Diamond but if you haven’t, I’m fairly certain you’d enjoy the cinematic quality. It’s really Pink Floyd’s masterwork, Comfortably Numb notwithstanding (in its popularity).
Between the small towns of Chico CA and what's left of Paradise CA is a winding canyon road called "Honey Run." The road for a long section is covered by all manner of spray painted art (or graffiti as the elders called it), the Batman logo, hearts and dedications and varying other tags among them. Someone added the full lyrics of Pink Floyd's 'Time' to that collection at one point. I don't know how much of that survived the fire that destroyed my hometown (I know the Honey Run Covered Bridge didn't survive), but it always seemed to be a cool thing.
Dark Side of the Moon is best experienced with headphones and the whole album straight through. Unlike today's music, the tracks connect and flow to make an experience more than their individual parts.

Always loved your reactions, and Pink Floyd are my fave band (joint top with Queen, followed both since the 1970s)
I think it's more effective if you do the lyrics after.
This song hits harder every year you are alive
Time and Great Gig in the Sky should be done as one!
the album "Dark Side of the Moon" was on the Billboard charts for 980 weeks.......we would listen to the entire album, beginning to end, lying back in the dark. through headphones
A song with unparalleled music and lyrical meaning
Anything from Pink Floyd is terrific.
Thank you, Mike, Good Call!
The next track on the album will blow your freakin' mind.
Such a B-E-A-U-TIFUL reaction.
That whole album! Nothing more needs said. Over 50 years old and still up there by anyone’s ratings!
Legendary engineering from Alan Parsons. This is the disc (and the LP before that) that I used when test-driving speakers at the stereo store...
I really love this format of reading the lyrics first.
Maggie it’s cool to see you like Pink Floyd so much, if they ever tour again I think you would be a great back up singer for them 😊.
One of my favorite lyrics in rock music of all time: "No one told you when to run ... you missed the starting gun ..."
Maggie, Love your reactions. Thank you for bringing us along on your journey.
The way the background singers are used to move the song along is nothing short of amazing…..especially the transition from the solo back into the lead vocal….
So nice listening to Pink Floyd.
You'd love the album version of GREAT GIG IN THE DKY - it's perfect for your Opera Reaction commentary and knowledge. You fans will love your insight. The song has a female
singer.
One of the greatest albums of all time.
Welcome to the amazing world of Pink Floyd 🎸🎸
Yea, it's supposed to transport you to somewhere else. We used to call it Acid Rock. The songs all run into each other to form a theme, like one long story. The end of the last song has heartbeats that match the heartbeats at the beginning of the first song so it can be played on a loop. You put the album on repeat, kick back, drop a hit of purple microdot and let the music take you to the dark side on the moon..
Pink Floyd is the OG music to sit and listen to while you are just chilling while you bake.
"This song seems like one where you just kick back, close your eyes, relax and just listen."
You just described the entire album.
This song will hit different in about 40 years.
I was 18 going on 19 when this masterpiece came out on the Dark Side of the Moon album. I'll be 70 years old this year, and this song has become more personal. So, I'm trying to make the most out of the time I have left.
18 years old when this came out. Best listened to in a dark room with cans on. Mind blowing.
In 1973 I was sitting in a friends cars listening to Dark Side of The moon smoking grass and drinking beer and floating in La La land. 10x5 years later I still listen.
The whole album was a masterpiece.
Thanks! Progressive rock at its finest. Loved your reaction and analysis. 🌚 ⏰
THANK YOU for being my ROCK STAR!! 🤗💖🙏🌺💃🎶🥳🎉🤘🐶
GOAT song. GOAT solo.
My favorite part of Dark Side, so glad you enjoyed it... 😎
It's been said that Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour doesn't use an amplifier... he plugs his guitar straight into your soul!
In 10 years revisit this song and see how true it is.
Yes I agree u will like a great gig in the sky..
This song is best heard immediately followed by the Great Gig in the Sky...they really go together and something is lost listening to them separately.
All Pink Floyd is awesome ❤❤
Pink Floyd in their younger days and with Syd Barret were quite psychedelic. They carried that feel, if not full on style, with them into the 70s. This is why they are so "trip" friendly and you really don't need drugs to take that trip.
Yes, this song causes that, Pink Floyd causes that, no need for further words.
Hearing the opening… well all of it actually, but the opening live is unworldly! And as powerful as the song is, it’s always felt lonely also.
For my money, the greatest Pink Floyd song ever, from the greatest album ever! 👍 🤟
Nick Mason's contribution to this cut are very underrated. Everyone talks about Gilmour's guitar, but Nick is right under everything.
Maggie you will love Us and Them.😊
My second favorite Floyd song after "Comfortably Numb"...So English, captures the psyche perfectly.
Dark Side of the Moon is best experienced with headphones and the whole album straight through. Unlike today's music, the tracks connect and flow to make an experience more than their individual parts.
