I turned 30 a few weeks ago. I've been playing instruments for 20 years now. Been playing guitar for about 17 years. I went to college and got a bachelor's degree in music business. I have been working in the music industry for 8 years now. Been playing in bands since 2007...
I just decided to quit music. The Chicago local scene just took its toll on me. It became insane work for no payoff. I was spending all this time practicing, writing, playing shows, recording, networking, etc, all this money paying for merch and transportation and instruments and equipment - only to be playing shows to like 5 people, with non-existent streams. Music is soul crushing. It's exhausting. It's thankless. And at the end of the day, it was a waste of time. I've completely lost my passion and love for playing music. I'll always love listening to it. But I dont think I have it in me to try making music anymore. For over 15 years I dreamed of being in a successful band. I wasn't delusional enough to think I'd be rich and famous, I just wanted to see some growth and people genuinely show interest. I obsessed every day over the idea of going on tour and playing shows to maybe 100 people. That dream is now dead. I've aged out of the local music scene. And now I'm facing my 30s directionless and passionless, and it's horrible. But the thought of slogging through the music industry another year just disgusts me.
Good for you for being so self aware of what no longer works for you. Music industry is a facade, most bands are ran/operated by people with Cluster B/narcissistic opportunists. Knowing when to step away makes you a much better person than anyone in the music industry.
What do you do now? You said you are directionless and passionless, do you think you can live like that 10-20-30 years?
@@Alejandro-db2hm I'm not sure. I'm hoping eventually I'll find a new purpose for my life. Lately I've just been coasting and putting a lot of time into working. Work has really redefined my life.
Just wanna put this out there, Mike's music was/is super good
Studying for 12 years to be a doctor “I wonder what the guitar is like” sent me 😂

You & Me was the first song I ever 'liked' on spotify. I'm glad you're still making songs on the side for your podcasts and shows, as long as you make sure you don't bring back the piss.
This is also good advice for a relationship you no longer want to be in
And also, the stuff you've done so far has meaning, be it to yourself for your own personal growth, or for the people you shared the endeavor with. I still maintain that You & Me by Fike Malzone over here is one of my favourite songs, and I listen to it on the regular. Vike Calzone doesn't have to make more music, I still get to listen to the stuff that he's made in the past AND get to see him do the thing he currently likes doing, which is comedy. Wins all around.
Tike Nalzone's advice is good here, and whatever Charlie does next, I get the feeling it'll be cool as shit.
Who’s that?
@@mikefalzone He's a pretty chill dude, you'd like him. He is trying to steal your look tho
good luck to that dude
I mean I used to have The Way She Walks Away on repeat, I won’t lie.
Thanks for sharing. Bands like Coldplay make it look so easy lol.
I did band gigging for 12 years. I've had my fill. Keeping my chops up for so little reward....not worth it, though it was for a few years.
Its nice to have that "special" ability most do not have, but guess what... most people don't even care. So whats left after that? The money?..lol!
Ok. Just the LOVE of playing music? Meh. Very very few just do it for the love of music. Since there is no money, most do it for the adulation, which in America, is in short supply.
I was in Germany in 2010. Wow they love live music...but I don't live there. Whats crazy is I played in a band that did all the local clubs, my town fair and even the County fair year after year.
5 years after quitting is like no-one ever heard of us. Local bands have the shelf life of lettuce.
The first 5 years though WAS a lot of fun, and yea we made like 100 bucks each per night.
I should have did it for 5 years and then quit looking back.
Got a BA in music in my country Ecuador, i studied and worked from music for 6 years, then i knew i was stuck… now i work as a paralegal, i’m making money, currently studying both law and accounting, and i feel amazing; im glad i left the burning ship that was a career in music…xd
I still have my signed shirt from one of your shows at the space! - the kid who kept hitting the pony as a drum without realizing how annoying that is
Honestly your cover of Paradise was probably my favorite rendition of that song
That’s a really awesome thing to hear. That song and that video take me back to a really special and really nice time in my life.
Thank you Samantha
there is no HR department for artists
I’m in a weird limbo state with a lot of my hobbies lately. The option paralysis of finding new inspiring endeavors reeaaalll.
Try everything!
"Mike's midnight music" would be great !
give us your cell phone #, we'll call you at midnight - every night - to play you a song !
Hell, that would be an awesome radio show lol I'd tune in to that
this is news to me
Doing the reverse childish bambino and Hannibal buress
I'm sure you've been asked this before, but have you thought of doing musical comedy? Something like Demetri Martin, Bo Burnham, or Stephen Lynch. You're very talented in both, and hearing you with Steve on DB I can definitely see you making something great.
That like was some of his songs tho, him amd his tight ass jeans. as well as the whole song which is a joke about stalking
How'd I miss that one? I'll need to check that out.
@@imadinowithoutaname this is gunna be awesome
I still miss playing though.
You can still play
@@mikefalzone technically, true. While I still have a keyboard that I play for fun, I'm a drummer at heart. And location adds to the inability to play them.
But, it's more the "band" atmosphere that I miss. The practices. When the only thing that mattered was 'muh band. I miss the "shows" and when we truly thought we were "gonna make it" lol..
hey mike i got a question for ya when as an artist do you realise that you're well equipped to start performing infront of others ?
I get that part of a being an artist is having this complex of not being good enough all the time and its a good drive to keep on improving but its hard to tell when you could start going live and not look like a big dummy.
Sometimes you just have to do it and feel it and assess how you feel afterwards. It’s one of those “you don’t know until you try” situations.
Have you ever thought of mixing the two and doing parody music? I've been waiting for someone to do a spoof of the Beatles' "Abbey Lane" about Khaby Lame.
Thank you for this.. I've been thinking of quitting YT content creation for a while, heart just not in it. I do however enjoy helping people create their own content(collaborate) ...😁
If that makes sense?
It does! Do whatever feels best. Do whatever is gonna prolong your happiness
Do you really not play music at all anymore? Or just not like stage performances?
I really don’t play at all anymore. I picked up my electric once or twice over 2020 and had a really nice time noodling around and I’ve had the urge to do more recently. It just seems like everything else takes priority.

Goat cheese salaaaaaad
Wow I don't get it?
(Advice) Maybe you should have kept or made your music fun?
Why worry about the songs/music you can't play?
And play the millions of songs you can/could play?
Oh you wanted yo be a star a god ?..
Now a UA-cam star who talks about how hard it is to be funny..
(More Advice) .. Keep trying Bro. You'll get there some day.
And if not? There's always Drama classes.
Let me know if you have any more advice?

Lol .. Me? Nah .. I never give advice LOL
