That there is the Standard for a Bushcraft knife. In my knife collecting opinion I believe that Emberleaf make the best version of the Ray Mears Woodlore.
Nice video. Always interesting to see what others put their emphasis on. One thing that doesn’t make sense to me with this knife design is how far from the handle the edge begins. The part of the edge closest to the handle is where I use my knives the most, and where I have the most power. I think I would struggle with a knife that wastes so much of the blade. Any idea why it is designed this way?
@@howardvarley8795 OK, I can see that. But it would also make it more necessary to choke up more? I have a few different knives in that size range, and I use them pretty hard. I could choke up I suppose, but rarely have the need. But, it would make it good for use with winter gloves I guess. I sometimes get my glove on the back part of the edge in winter.
I have 4 Adventure Sworn knives and they are all better than this knife. No worries there and probably a fraction of the cost. leather work is better as well IMO.
@@williamhiggins4459 totally disagree. I have an imported custom Mountaineer and its definately Not better than the Ray Mears knives . It most certainly Wasn't a fraction of the price either, actually with carriage and import duties it was bl**dy expensive! Which is why I've only got one. And the Woodlore sheath is a work of art. Quality is as good as you get. I suspect you don't even own a Ray Mears knife, if you did you wouldnt make inaccurate statements like this.
So im a believer in the ka-bar because I'm in the north country. A crossgaurd will help when chipping through ice with mittens on. Just saying. It's not all about combat with crossgaurds.
I was thinking the same thing about a guard. And not just when chopping ice; it helps to landmark your grip and it helps to make sure that in emergencies that you don't end up gripping the blade by accident or having your hand slip there while using the knife.
@@edwardfletcher7790many thanks for the reply Edward, having a traditional Scandinavian Puuko I do realise that, but the bush craft knife is usually made with a drop point or is that not correct? In Ray's book, he recommends a drop point tip with the reason it does not slip off the work so easily, I do find this to be the case when carving, I do tend to create a slight downward curve tip when I make a knife for that reason, I would be interested to see if you find it to be comfortable for carving and skinning
@@richardgriggs5292 A drop point is by far the best for bushcraft for strength. But the tip ends up much thicker eh ? According to Reddit, the Condor Bushlore seems to be the best affordable clone. I've checked the official Ray Mears page, the Emberleaf page and a heap of others and can't find any reference to the tip design. So I've removed my comment as I've never seen the knife in person to discern the tip. All I'm going on, is a short video of Ray discussing his preference for a thinner tip to facilitate easier carving and drilling. UPDATE: According to a fellow on Bushcraft.uk who owns 3 different series of Ray Mears knives, they're ALL drop points. BUT, he says a lot of the knives Ray used on the show were customs. One of which I remember had a flat spine and very long tapered Scandi point that he used for carving. Also remember that Scandi grinds are only truly useful on soft woods. I'm in Australia where most of our trees are like cast iron and easily roll knife tips and defy batonning with their wavy pattern & knottiness from drought.
