"Greetings Dutch Knife People!" (as Sensai Virtuovice would say) First...I am Englishman living in Canada for 14 years (with some Sami ancestry). Yes, Ray Mears was my (and my late fathers) favourite show and really encouraged me to live in the bush. Ray is a gentleman and not aiming for media hype. Survivorman is also very good. I liked Dual Survival when Dave and Cody were on it. Mykel Hawke and his wife were good. Ed Stafford made a movie about trying to survive one year in Northern Canada...you should watch it, he nearly went crazy. Bear Grylls has skilz...and is a good bloke, and head Boy Scout. All this said, I believe Lars Monsen (Norwegian) is the most impressive survivor, he has current shows on NRK....just look at his bio...UNBELIEVABLE! Of course, we should not forget Mors Kochanski (kind of the Godfather of Bushcraft and survival)...still running courses at his school in Alberta Canada (Karamat Wilderness School). You two young fellows should put yourself forward to the show 'Alone'...it would be very interesting episode...but I fear you would likely die. Stay safe friends!
+Woodsman Spirit. Regardless if you think the guys from DBK would die if they went on 'Alone'. Dutch people can't apply for 'Alone'. The guys from DBK say it all the time that they are not experienced survival or bushcraft guys, but you seem to be a fan of the show Alone. There is a reason they don't accept people from Europe on that show. We would make Americans look like fools probably? Most likely the American audience would feel pretty upset when a European guy or girl won that price money. Not saying I disagree with all you said about the rest of the tv show characters.
I agree with much of what you say...except, I am not AMERICAN, I am English (with Sami Ancestry) I came to live in Canada in 2004. I can recall many survival situations that I endured in the remote areas of the British Isles in the 50 years I lived there (particularly in the Scottish Highlands and Cairngorm Mountains). No need to clarify the DBK guys lack of survival skills ...God Bless them, I was just having a bit of fun...I hope this is OK??
+Woodsman Spirit. I see where I made the mistake. I said 'you Americans' and that would assume I did not read and thought you were American. I did read your post and know you are not, so I lost the word 'you' in the sentence and now talking about the Americans only. Not that I dislike Americans at all. I have many American friends. It's also ok to not agree on some points with them. I do think that Americans have a tendency to not look outside of the US borders. Maybe because they do not travel abroad a lot. I'm a friend of the survival instructor that works for 'Naked and Afraid' whenever they shoot in the Middle and South America's. He's from Colombia. Btw. I don't think Mickey and Maarten would die if they participated in 'Alone'. I also think they would not win but make some nice videos of them not winning in the process.
No worries friend! Yes, sometime our American friends might benefit from looking outside their own borders and seek the wealth of knowledge and experience available from others who live in, or enjoy their hobbies in the great outdoors. I have some understanding of the ways of the Sami Peoples and the indigenous First Nations, here in Canada (I have spent time in nature with First Nations and my grandson is First Nations). Best Wishes, WS
Enjoyed the vid guys. All the survival guys aim at different audiences and come from different backgrounds. BG knife may not be great, but he is chief Scout in the UK and inspires the Kids to get off their iPads and get outside. Giving them some kit to work with is no bad thing. Mearsey is a legend in my eyes, no fuss or gimmicks. Find it hard to watch some US programmes as they’re a bit OTT for my ever so reserved English sensitivities :). Massive upper body strength and a growling shouty voice probably doesn’t help you survive... could scare away bears I guess... anyway, keep up the good work and respect for the Fred Perry collection.
I like to think of it this way. If you or I were in a true survival situation in the woods our chances of making it out alive would go up drastically if any of these guys were with you. To me the big thing is to learn all you can from whoever you can, including you guys. :) I really enjoyed all of their shows with Dual Survival year 1 and 2 being my favorite. Trying to say who "the best" is is ridiculous IMHO. BTW - does Mikki have a job yet?
Man vs Wild is definitely not an educational show, strictly for entertainment, if you follow the advice shown and jump off a 200 foot cliff, waste all of your energy by running around with a spear to try to catch potentially poisonous insects, and climb sketchy terrain, you will definitely die from an injury way longer before starving to death. A lot of the things that Bear did weren’t even real, like that bow drill fire, which was absolutely fake. Zero knowledge on the show, gave me quite a few laughs though, and honestly Bear seems to genuinely be a great guy in real life.
Yup, Mors Kochanski. The man lived it as part of his job. Lol, I got a kick out of the "stupid Dutchman" comment. Both my parents were from Holland and my Dad often told jokes where the Dutchman was usually the brunt of the joke. I've always respected the Dutch as having a healthy pride, a wicked sense of humor, and not arrogant in general.
Definitely picked Dave as my favorite than les stroud ray mears seems like a well rounded woodsman but he’s boring. I haven’t watched much on him besides 20 or so tube videos.
I think a lot of people who bash these shows are the same people who can't walk across their own backyard without getting lost and scared. Great video guys.
Les Hiddens and Mors Kochanski are the original, Ray Mears is only a few years behind when he started his school in 1983. Cody Lundin started his school in 1991. All are highly adept individuals.
Thoughts on matt graham? I know alot of people hate on him for replacing cody on dual survival, but matt has some serious skills and is super down to earth. Seems like just a great guy to go out into the woods with
Matt Graham is not genuine he's a joke, in fact he said he taught Cody Lundin all his skills in one the videos. That is a joke as Cody was adept while Matt was not quite so. Anyone who lies like that is deemed uncredible.
OK guys, I watch your videos for the knives, and have unsubscribed because of the foolishness, then re-subscribed for the knives again. Now here is a video without knives, and it just might be your best video ever! I don't understand, but I will say thank-you (from Canada). Your evaluation of TV bushcrafters/survivalists is spot on, and I think I did see a knife sitting on the table in front of you somewhere.
Look at their Ego vs. Ethics. It has more to do with their message and how they deliver it. I am more about Matt or Les as they are humble. Respect the Nature is the message they give
Mykel Hawk’s wife’s name is Ruth! I agree with everything Martin was saying because I also spent a lot of time watching the Discovery channel growing up and he’s right. Ruth was very squeamish at the beginning like a typical sheltered beauty Queen but as the show progressed she really blossomed into a respectable survivalist herself. She was still relying on Myke as a duo team but she improved tremendously over the course of the season and she’s a good team player because even when she struggled she still participated enough to minimize her burden on Myke
My major issue with Bear G. Is that he does some incredibly stupid things that if you actually did in real life you would get hurt if no killed. Like moving extremely quickly down a steep slope and pretty much running around in the woods. Following what he does is just plain foolish.
Dual Survival. Dave and Cody...thing i remember Dave had a hard time making fire and relied on Codys skill All the time..and Cody for some reason wouldn't hunt or was against hunting he would go look for insects and vegetation to eat...so Dave would go off hunting and Cody would stay and make camp fire shelter and a bed..Dave would come back with a kill he had made and Cody would cook it...at my house my mother started. Calling it the Husband and Wife show...
Hands down Ray Mears is the best and I remember an Australian show years ago called bushtucker man , he was like an Australian Ray Mears , living in the outback .
I really like Ed Stafford show. Dave Canterbury is really cool, making impression that he is really tough country man. Mayers for his knowledge and Bear Grylls for overall entertainment. I wouldn't be Polish if i don't mention Polish guy- best and my favourite is Bushcraftowy- words in to action.
DBK, have you seen the series called Alone, which is on the History channel here in US? It is really good and true survival. 10 contestants put in wilderness with 10 items to survive by foraging and hunting own food…. Btw, keep up the great channel. Love you guys.
Question. ..... If you where in a survival situation. Let's say in the mountains you have just a knife a tarp and a Ferro rod and someone is after you or hunting you..now you only have two choices of the man who could help you.. and your two choices are..... Bear Grylls or... less Stroud..you had to pick..nobody else but these two...pick one and tell me why..take your time look both of them up. who would you pick to help you......
From what I have seen I'd choose bear. He has learned survival not just from his hobby but also because he had to. He also grew up using a lot of skills for the things he did in his daily life. He's an actor on TV but he surely knows his stuff for real
@@DutchBushcraftKnives and I agree with you he gets a bad time with someone calling him out about some hotel...he was in the special forces sky diving mountain climbing so yes I would also take Bear over less besides less would drive me crazy with that hamanica.. And his bigfoot stories.. Which he made videos on that never found anything but like 5 videos 1 hour long horrible
Les Stroud sits around and does nothing but play the harmonica his show is so boring how could you even put them up to Bear Grylls do you know Bear Grylls was in the military the SAS you know he climbed Mount Everest do you know he broke his back parachuting do you know he's experienced mountain climber do you know all these things plus is trained in survival what qualifications does less have over Bear Grylls.....he has less skills
Bear Grylls never showed survival skills. Bear's show was about entertainment and involved things you would never do in a million years in a survival situation. Bear was surrounded by a huge crew and didn't actually stay out in the wilderness for 7 days at a time without food and water like Les did. You can't compare the 2 shows as Les' was real and Bear's was just a set of situations presented to Bear to make an entertaining show. If you know anything about real survival skills then Les' show is much more appealing. Many people have credited watching Survivorman with saving their lives and I've never heard of a single person saying that about watching Bear's show.
@@buddhamack1491 wow what are talking about bear showed more survival skills in one episode then less did in his whole career les's was camping that's what it looked like to me set up a shelter make a fire then Camp. Play the harmonica and just look at the stars and camp. I mean that's all great if you like that kind of show but I never seen him scale down a mountain cross a crazy River.. trap and kill his own food like snakes are other creatures.. I mean less didn't do anything like that besides eat a fish... Less's idea of survival is make a fire make a shelter and sit there.. that show stared off good but then show after show the same thing over and over... Camping....yes Less is a great Camper.
Scaling down a mountain is not survival and crossing crazy rivers is just stupid. Survival is about minimizing risks, not showing off for the camera. Les showed what you would do in a real survival situation. When your life is actually on the line you take care of basic needs till you're rescued or you can get yourself to safety. Yes it looks a lot like camping which is why the producers of Bear Grylls' show made him do stunts to make it more entertaining. Talk to Edward and he would be the first to tell you that show is entertainment and not representative of what to do in a real survival situation. Look at Ed Stafford's "Marooned", he has the same common sense approach that Les and all other survival instructors would teach, but he has similar background to Edward "Bear" Grylls. Dual Survival started out sane, then went down the path of creating drama to sell the show too. I've been in the military and done many wilderness survival courses over the years and I can assure you they teach the Les Stroud approach. Bear's TV show was fun, but it in no way represents sane survival choices.
Buddhuntain.. so you never read a book or seen a TV show of what people had to do and what they went through to survive..look it up people do the unthinkable the most amazing things they thought they could never do just to survive... so scaling down the mountain or Crossing a river isn't a survival situation well I believe it is based on your situation.. look Bear shows you how to save yourself from your situation. Which could mean you have been in an accident either in a plane a car or even a boat.he shows you what you have to do..sometimes you just can't sit down and wait for help to arrive. your life or someone else's life may be in Danger you have to get up and move to save your own life. Like the rock climber who had to cut his own hand off..he had to do the unthinkable just to survive. .in a survival situation the best thing you could do sometimes is sit and wait.. but other times you have to move....
In the US there is a lot more wilderness compared to Europe. I hear from a lot of Europeans when they come here how shocked they are to realize how far apart everything often is. I live in the pacific Northwest so think Seattle Washington and Portland Oregon. My home state alone is roughly 6 times larger than Denmark and we are nowhere near the largest state. Oregon is approximately 248,631 sq km whereas Denmark is 43,094 sq km and Italy is 301,340 sq km. When I trained in fencing I had an hour drive to the club, competing could be around 3hr drive just to get to a nearby event that wasnt held at my club. California is 403,882 sq km making it larger than Germany and Texas is 678,052 sq km and finally Alaska is approximately 1,481,348 sq km and Alaska is almost entirely wilderness. Our forests are expansive and diverse and our plains are also massive. In my home state alone we have basically everything from mountain ranges and plains to deserts, beaches, rain forests, lakes and more. We arent unique in the US either so compared to Europe we have a lot more wilderness than highways, cities, towns etc. Never gets old seeing the shock Europeans have when they are traveling around the US. Everything really is bigger here, our wolves are bigger, our bears are bigger, our trees are bigger, our forests are much bigger and so on and so on. I hate our politics and social problems but I love the nature we have here. Here in the Pacific NW especially we as a culture tend to be proud of and love our forests and nature. If you guys ever come to the US I hope you visit Oregon given our diversity in ecosystems. Cali is home to the Redwood and those trees are genuinely awe inspiring and beautiful, they used to span a much larger part of the US but during the logging boom way back a lot of them were destroyed sadly. Also we in the US also have many native American communities who still carry on some of the old ways of survival. The Navajo are well known but they are in the south of the US, here in Oregon we have the Chinook which is where the military helicopter gets its name, we are also considered the knife capital of the US as we are home to Benchmade, Kershaw, Gerber, Leatherman, CRKT as well as many smaller companies like Sibert knives(designer of the Adamas) and James brand knives. Also Oregon and Washington are known as "Bigfoot"(Sasquatch) territory, not a believer personally but its something of an icon here that goes hand in hand with our vast forests.
As a Canadian, I have to go with Mors Kochanski (R.I.P.) and Les Stroud. As a kid I had the pleasure of doing a weekend course with Mors Kochanski and his knowledge was astounding. Les Stroud is equally amazing, and the fact that he does film himself makes him, in my opinion a survivalist God!!!
I wonder what was Bear Grylls original knife (before designing, using, the Gerber knives). It was a smaller (custom?) Full tang Fixed blade, + some gadgets in the sheath. Do you know?

+Woodsman Spirit. minwaabamewizi. I have talked to a native American Canadian of the Ojibwe tribe for over a year.
Love that Virtuovice mention. I could watch Wako strop for hours. The Bob Ross of the knife-world.
You guys should do a Bush craft camping video just to see what you guys do and why you do things and see whats in your kit and why you use it
I like to think of it this way.
One day it would be nice to have a meeting with you and all the lovers of survival and bushcraft!
You guys need to invite Dave Canterbury onto the show sometime
Danny Cadle he says he’s already been on the show
@@saheliumd7182 When???
Definitely picked Dave as my favorite than les stroud ray mears seems like a well rounded woodsman but he’s boring. I haven’t watched much on him besides 20 or so tube videos.
Sahil Dogra I believe your wrong but no ones perfect.
Ray Mears. I'm not going to go into details, but he is the top. I like how you added Mykel Hawke in there, top guy.✌🏼👍🏼🙏🏼
Bear had a custom knife made before the Gerber days..Made by Bayle Knife..a custom maker. Try and get one of those..:)
I went to see Ray Mears on his we are nature tour, he is truly amazing, if he tours where you are I highly recommend it 😄
I think a lot of people who bash these shows are the same people who can't walk across their own backyard without getting lost and scared. Great video guys.
Bush Tucker man might well be the original survival guy he was awesome.
You should put out videos about the construction!
It's a shame you never got to see Ron Hood's stuff. He did an excellent video series.
You two are the Beavis and Butthead of bushcraft knives!
I don't like podcasts, but I like you guys. :)
Guys, this was well done and a lot of fun.
The Camera men are the real stars of these shows
Ray mears, lofty wiseman and you two are the only ones to watch for real info👌👌👌🤘
Way to go guys, I really enjoy your videos. You both have some classic comments. All the best to both you. 🤗
Man woman wild was one of my favorite shows! Original dual survival was my personal favorite.
I love your video, you are funny and charismatic guy's, I very like dush bushcraft knives
Sorry for my English but I am Italian ahahha
No worries your English is good enough
Thank you!
Thank you very much, I practice English language because today is very important
@@DutchBushcraftKnives thank you for your answer
@@DutchBushcraftKnives and I agree with you he gets a bad time with someone calling him out about some hotel...he was in the special forces sky diving mountain climbing so yes I would also take Bear over less besides less would drive me crazy with that hamanica.. And his bigfoot stories.. Which he made videos on that never found anything but like 5 videos 1 hour long horrible
I like Les Strout. He doesn't do barbeque when the camera are off. No camera men. Real struggle situations.
@@buddhamack1491 wow what are talking about bear showed more survival skills in one episode then less did
in his whole career les's was camping that's what it looked like to me set up a shelter make a fire then Camp.
Like the rock climber who had to cut his own hand off..he had to do the unthinkable just to survive. .in a survival situation the best thing you could do sometimes is sit and wait.. but other times you have to move....
lofty wiseman is the king of survival, wrote the sas survival handbook.
Alberta here , and i agree with you , Les Stroud isnt a fake thats for sure i trust him the most
This was a great idea for a video!
Really awesome reviews about more blades!!!😄✌
I wonder what was Bear Grylls original knife (before designing, using, the Gerber knives). It was a smaller (custom?) Full tang Fixed blade, + some gadgets in the sheath.
Do you know?
I could listen to these guys talk forever.
BG ended up in a hotel whilst filming "survival program" Ray mears is a legend, that simple. Trust me as an Englishman he is survival entertainment and Mears is the real deal. Ray Mears doesnt have his own brand of china knives either.. ha ha
Trust is a luxury! ;)
Ya, Ray Mears sells a meh 01 bushcraft knife for $500 based on his name alone.
What about the "Bush Tucker Man" series? Les Hiddens. Older series in Australia - this was my introduction to bushcraft. Try it, if you find it somewhere....
Great videos & content, awesome & appreciated! 👍👍🇨🇦👍👍
Great video as always. Primal survival is a great one also.
Nice talk guys, nice add to the channel. Greets uit gouda 😉
Where are those dudes from "survive this"? That was a cool show with a fun premise.
I have to be honest, I watch every video you do ,and for the first time in ages I was pissing my self really great vid boys .
0:07 YES! DBK is the best channel about knives on the youtube. Why? bkz u, guys, listen oppinion from your subscribers (thanx for YAKUT!!! video), makes advices about knives (it's really helps save money), makes fun and very interesting scenes, and (most beautiful thing) made all of it with good music. Thank you!
Good video guys!
I am a fan of survivorman. I actually had the privilege of meeting Les Stroud at a grand opening where he signed my survivorman book and we had our picture taken together. The guy is legit and I do believe he was a camera man before the survivorman gig. Now that Bigfoot series of his had me shaking my head a bit, but I have watched other content by him and it is all pretty good stuff.
The fact that you watch Virtuovice explains you showing Bark River knives every so often. ;)
You guys crack me up I love you videos when I'm having a crapy day I put on your videos in you always put me in a good mood I live on a fixed income as I am disables I have MSI tell you this because IS the reason I cannot send you money I'm sorry I wish I could because you guys deserve it But honestly I have a Hard time paying the power bill every month. Thank you keep it up you guys make me laugh but you're also of serious and whenever I wanna get some honest advice about a knife like the time I asked about the Fallkniven knife You guys gave me solid information and answer I couldn't afford to buy the knife yet I'm saving up Thanks again look forward to the next video.
Dave Was in the military but was not a sniper. He also apologized.
Yea we personally don't mind because we just think he's a good man
@@DutchBushcraftKnives same.
Looking back at some older videos and some recent ones Mikkie B better start hitting the Rogaine now
Survival Lilly's got her own survival knife now. Better watch out boys :D Looks pretty good.
Speaking of survival stuff, What do you guys think of Knife Serrations? Probably most likely hate them, but still wanted to hear your thoughts. Usually on a lot of common knives.
You guys have a great channel.
Nothing beats the first couple seasons of Alone
The first time i don't liesten You Talk about knives, but good vídeo couse the kineves are the mostrar importante tool un survival world. Hi guys
I love that edit at 12:40 😂
Eating a bug or grub will continue to be known as Bear Gryllsing it!
Ill have to tell my girlfriend that when she swallows some trouser snake
My First Nation Grand daddy would say that you are losing at woods survival if you are eating bugs.
Check out bear grylls show called The Island.
Another great video!!
Mikkie and Maarten in Duo Survival would be my favorite TV show lol, something I just realised
You guys are pure awesome 😎
Les Stroud and Ray Mears are my favs, I was into Dual Survivor until the episode where the broke into a bee hive to get honey.
You guys should do a skit of Ray Mears vs Les Stroud surviving
You should try the Gerber Bear grylls Ultimate Pro knife, it’s supposed to be really good. It has its own sharpener and fire steel.
Gotta love the Dutch!
My favorite tv survivalist is ray mears followed by mikell hawk les stroud is probbably my third favorite
I' d Go with Cody to be Safe, warm and dry 😉🍀
Veliki pozdrav iz Srbije, odlicni ste!! Rado bih vas podrzao na patreonu, ali nisam u mogucnosti, sve sto mogu da dam je like and subscribe!! Use google translate, its Serbian!! :D
A nice show as well: Alone
Enjoyed the crap out of this one! Love you guys
Thank you for not talking trash about bear grylls.
Les Stroud is totally my first choice as guest for your show. Make it happen!
