With all respect, unless you have used this knive previously, I am very sceptical about "unboxing knife reviews" without giving the tool a good amount of use. Did you test both knives ? or are you just guessing. I have a beautiful custom forged blade $500 3/4" stock. Is it better or not then Ray Mears blade, doesn't really matter. @@daveexplore3856 There are destruction tests of the BPS knife, it is indeed VERY tough and on par with the best of them. Too expensive, lovely tool and I would like one but there are £100 knives out there that can do the job just as well. I have a Randall Made knife in O1 Swedish tool steel but, it was made in 1984 when steel was still in the dark ages! With modern steels what is the advantage of paying that much for a knife, even as beautiful as it is. I have MANY knives just as nice for 200.00 USD less and better steels. I know, I know I've heard the old saying "Well it's all about the heat treat" Some truth in that but, I can heat treat great or better knife steels.
9:12 Quick question: what CAN that Ray Mears Scandi grind knife do, that CANNOT be done with the sabre grind knife you're showing? My reason for asking: UA-cam is inundated with videos with the message that, to be a PROPER "bushcraft" knife, it HAS to be a Scandi grind knife! I'm trying to delve into why this is so, and what is is that is so important about the Scandi grind? In my limited opinion, the Scandi grind knife has some limitations that no-one ever (or seldom) talks about. Firstly, a Scandi knife would be quite a bit heavier than an exact replica in full flat, hollow, convex or sabre grind, as there is much more steel there. Then, the Scandi knife is more difficult to sharpen, especially out in the field, where one is likely to damage the edge and end up with a secondary bevel, and this would mean quite a re-grind job in the workshop. I'd be really interested in your opinion on these. Cheers.
@@dennisleighton2812 on the contrarie i am far from skillful, but it is just developed for easy sharpening in the outdoors. Even kids learn it in Sweden ,Norway ,Lapland when they are out. Mora is one of the most popular knives for a reason
That’s a good question, the Scandi is very traditional design, because of the single bevel it’s a great woodworking tool and great for splitting wood due to its ‘wedge’ design, especially coupled with say 4mm thick blade. The Sabre I’d call an all rounder, great for Bushcraft work and food prep. But I think there is a lot of ‘ if you don’t have a Scandi your not a real bushcrafter’ at the end of the day any edged blade can be used out in the bush, just depends on your preference. Take one of each, that’ll solve the problem!!!🙂
I am new to high-quality knives and have been looking at more cold steel budget-type knives. But I have been thinking about moving up to 150 to 200 Canadian level getting my feet wet to see if I like the pool! lol! Please don't take it the wrong way but your knives look better fit and finish than the one you like so much or your wife bought you. I would be insulted. I guess Im an asshole to be that petty. but the red back filler the level of the mirror I guess it is different if I hold it but I been throwing knives for about 2 years trying to hit something small and I can tell how a knife will feel or have a good idea and I would gladly give you my money for a knife before I bought that other one i can tell it was a lot if you're afraid to use it lol.
Hey there, thanks for the compliment, it means a lot, I definitely aim for a very high fit and finish on my knives. The Ray Mears knife design is what inspired me to make knives, so for me, it’s a dream to own one. Don’t dip your feet in, dive in !!!😂
For a carbon steel knife , theyre not all that , other companies can make them for £20 , iv got sandvik steel knives for a 5th of the price , that iv used heavily for 5 years , (congratulations for managing to secure one ) theyre a bugger to get old of
Cheers, I’m very lucky to have it, yes there’s lots of cheaper blades out there, but they don’t have the same sentimental value, this is the knife that started my knife making journey, it means a lot to me, hope that makes sense🙂cheers Alasdair 🔪👍
I think the steel that is used on this knife is incredibly poor for the price you pay for the knife, steel has came a long way since o1, I’d be much happier with cpm magnacut, cru wear or even cpm 3v
You are probably right that there is better steels out there, O1 is just a traditional steel that Bushcrafters like, plus you get that cool patina build up over time, something that stainless cant match. I just love it for what it is, a classic designed Bushcraft knife.🙂🙂
I dont get it, you make beautifull knives and yet you worship a 600 euro o1??? steel knife? Just because it says ray mears on it? Why not bear grills than? Or Macgyver maybe? Come on man you are a knife maker he is a knife seller, have some dignity.
Thanks for the compliment!! I have so much respect for other knife makers, particularly Alan Wood, the original maker of the Woodlore for creating such an iconic knife, with Ray Mears input. It’s the knife that inspired me to create my own knives, I don’t think I’ve lost any dignity feeling grateful to own one. Cheers Alasdair🔪🔪
Your missus got you you're goat knife and you going to stash it?? If i as was you're missus I'd be a bit pissed that I got you the goat, and you're going to stash it. You would have better been served buying and Esse 5 or 6 for far less money and no they'll do the job.
Do NOT store that beautiful knife in its leather sheath!! The leather will corrode almost any metal, Stainless or carbon steel after any lenghtly storage period. Doesn't matter the quality of the leather, the moisture and chemicals used to tan leather will attack any steel. store separated from each other and re-unite them for display or use.

$640 for 01 tool steel??? No sharpening choil.
Can get 2 bark rivers in magnacut for that price
Scandi grinds don’t need a sharpening choil, that’s one of the advantages of them 👍 Bark River make cool knives 🙂
Just get yourself a BPS HK5.
Made in Ukraine.
A really good knife and probably more than half the price.
Sorry fella. In the sheath, in the box! What's wrong with.... In the hand. In the woods ?
You’re not wrong, one day I might use it, but for now it lives in the box. It is a nice box to live in tho!😂
Cheers.
I like scandi just because of easy field sharping to be honest
@@sosteve9113 Really? You must be exceptionally skillful! Not even professional knifemakers find it easy!
LT Wright knifes are scandi grind with a micro bevel when they come out of the factory .
It increases the strength on the edge
That's just what we need. Someone squirrelling away a useful tool to help drive up the resale market. At least use it to skin a rat!

Early birthday pressie , it’s not until next month, but she couldn’t wait to give it to me 😂
Knives are made to be used
I would not store such a knife long term in the sheath, corrosion can occur on bolts.
Your not wrong!!
What a smack in the face for your wife. 'I'm not going to use it...' Bloody 'ell... What did she buy it for? What did Ray Mears MAKE it for?
Please use it , it will be worth more to the person you pass it onto in terms of an emotional connection.
That’s a good point🤔🤔
For a carbon steel knife , theyre not all that , other companies can make them for £20 , iv got sandvik steel knives for a 5th of the price , that iv used heavily for 5 years , (congratulations for managing to secure one ) theyre a bugger to get old of
Cheers, I’m very lucky to have it, yes there’s lots of cheaper blades out there, but they don’t have the same sentimental value, this is the knife that started my knife making journey, it means a lot to me, hope that makes sense🙂cheers Alasdair 🔪👍
il n'a vraiment rien inventé! Machine à cash!
I think Ray Mears should be buying your knives. They are much nicer.
Hey James, wow, that's a huge compliment, thank you very much🙂🙂
I think the steel that is used on this knife is incredibly poor for the price you pay for the knife, steel has came a long way since o1, I’d be much happier with cpm magnacut, cru wear or even cpm 3v
You are probably right that there is better steels out there, O1 is just a traditional steel that Bushcrafters like, plus you get that cool patina build up over time, something that stainless cant match. I just love it for what it is, a classic designed Bushcraft knife.🙂🙂
Silicone oil , is all you need , protects gun bluing in miserable weather
If you aren’t going to use it, it is a waste of money to whoever bought it!!!
Definitely not a waste of money, just can’t bring myself to use it yet, but who knows, one day !!!
Why not use it? Is useless otherwise.
stay in the box! how sad , sorry
That's not a noife!...
You’re spot on there!! I should have said it’s not kept in the sheath, good advice 👍👍
Free advice: stay behind the camera
Cheers for your advice, but I think I'll carry on doing something I enjoy. Perhaps I can give you some, don't watch my videos 😜
Stupidly priced, too expensive to use or loose.
congrats mate - That looks unreal.
Thank you, it’s a beauty 😊
You make nice blades.
Thanks for the compliment 🔪🔪
