    The blue vains painting reminds me of the makeup that we do nowadays, drawing freckles on top of foundation to create the natural effect.

      Speaking of Lancôme. I won’t use them as they still use animal testing. There is NO reason for this, as there are PLENTY of Women who would be more than happy to be a Guinea Pig for Lancôme & test the products out for them.

    When john singer sargent was painting Madame X, he nearly gave up because he said she was 'already painted'. He was especially frustrated by the changing hue of her skin. Each day she came to sit for him she was a different shade of lavender.

    Fascinating. In candle light it must have looked quite "real." However, as you mentioned, in daylight you could probably see that it was painted on. We're still dealing with different makeup looks for daytime and evening; and there is still a trend for the "no makeup" makeup look. Or the use of filters when posting to social media. Love this information and the insights you provide with your history of makeup. Thank you.

    The whole thing reminds me about our today's situation with filters and plastic surgery. Everyone loves to look at young and flawless faces yet when someone "fakes" that esthetic they get shamed so much for wanting to be that. As long as noone sees or recognizes the alterations people don't mind or even rave about it. They all say they like natural yet the only thing they like is the illusion of natural perfection.

      I completely agree with you. Some of the comments from Lisa in the video felt pointed, to where I thought she was inviting us to see how little things have changed, right down to the extreme shaming of people who are discovered to be "faking" it vs those who have us believing they're not. Other than the very young and the very lucky (as she says), almost everyone is 'faking it' to some extent.

    A little off-topic, but I remember seeing on an art channel that the first painting shown of “Madame X” caused a huge controversy as the original had her left gown strap off her shoulder. It was considered scandalous and both she and the artist were mocked. He eventually painted it over but I think an original version still exists. Several years later a 2nd off-the-shoulder work by a different artist, the other you see here, suffered no such fate.

    Very interesting video, many thanks. Apparently King George V’s Consort Queen Mary was the most famous devotee (if that’s the right word) of enamelling as she considered that the ‘immoral’ aspect of make up was expunged for her since as Queen it was her duty to look as perfect as possible as the physical manifestation of the apogee of the social pyramid, representing the Sovereign and thus the British Empire. She was an amazing woman.

    Enamelling reminds me of the modern day BB Glow. The BB Glow is a Korean microneedling of flesh toned colors into the skin, possibly blushing, that can last up to 4 months. It has its issues, but 4 months of flawless looking skin is an interesting idea.

    Oh, and I used to paint under ' natural light ' light bulbs, as this gave you the most realistic light in which to paint. Rather like exposing lines and blemishes on the face , natural light reveals all sins , it also enables you to blend and mix paints to realistic looking hues.

    It’s all artifice and theatre and utterly fascinating. In many ways we have come a long way but we are not so different in the extent we will go to create the illusion of youth and beauty.
    This is a fantastic history of cosmetics. Thank you for sharing this. I found the pearl white skin, the painting of veins and the application of the almost feverish blush to the cheeks and ear lobes a peculiar ideal of beauty. I suppose the way we layer and buff contour, bronzer, blush and highlighter is going to seem peculiar in ten years.

    • @Trassel242
      @Trassel242 8 місяців тому

      As far as I know, the reason being pale was the ideal was because it implied you were nobility or at least rich since you didn’t have to do heavy physical labour outside that would give you a suntan. It got a bit tricky during the Industrial Revolution, when the factory workers showed that it was now possible to be poor and pale, so then the ideal shifted to having a “healthy tan” from being rich enough to afford a vacation somewhere sunny. I think the reason they added so much blush etc with the pale skin is because, well, it makes you look slightly less like a literal corpse. I read some old Victorian book that said something about basically that a woman is the most beautiful when she’s feverish, as she’ll get sparkling eyes, rosy cheeks and still give off the delicate, gentle vibes of a person that needs to be taken care of (as she should, because she’s sick with a fever). It’s honestly kind of similar to the 14-15th century “trend” among nuns to starve themselves to prove how much they were willing to suffer for their religion.
