Hello! Thank you for your lovely comment! I love that so many 'Biba' girls are chiming in! I love that era and, yes, I'm familiar with Roxy Music! ❤❤❤💜
I lived through the Biba era (and sadly it’s demise) visiting both the original store and the second larger store every week. I would mention that the Biba makeup look was not a “theatrical” look created for photography shoots, and was worn by all of us in full everyday. I was an art student at the time, but you saw Biba makeup on all the trendy girls. Clearly you were not in London at the time. Biba clothes whilst costing less than traditional clothes were still pricey by todays standards and most people had to save up for an outfit. I still have all my Biba clothes. I became a makeup artist and trainer and went on to set up the makeup brand for Miss Selfridge within the Selfridges store in London in 1978. Kindly note there is no ‘s’ in Hulanicki.
Hello! Indeed, from all the feedback that I'm getting, it's becoming pretty obvious that it was actually worn by women and a cherished look ! I think that is fantastic ! So the Biba cosmetic line was still being sold after the final closure of the store! You were very lucky to be living in such fashionable times! And thank you for the feedback!
I wore the Biba perfume in the early 70s. I have not found anything as wonderful after that. I loved Biba, Mary Quant and Yardley. I spent some time in Germany back then and I think the German girls loved the Biba-look as well.
Thank you for sharing the information ! It was hard to figure out how far the influence of Biba reached by simply looking at fashion pictures in vintage magazines. It's amazing that there was even a perfume! ❤
I wore it too. I used to hang out in the big shop in Kensington. I still remember the scent and the beautiful black glass bottles .I had the bottles for many years then got rid of them I wish it could be reproduced. I wore the makeup, and I still like use the dark colours on my eyes even though I'm now an old lady.
You look and speak like you're from another time w Haunting beauty. I remember those little pots of eye color! When my Biba supply ran out and stopped being made, i used Aziza, Dior, Charles Ritz. Glamorous colors back then, and of course now, as well. Thank you for the tutorial, history and walk down memory lane.
Beautiful and informative ~ Both Mina and Patty are absolute icons, and of course so is the Biba look, inspiration for many even today in 2024. Your final look is epic, love the combination of green and yellow!
Loved this! Your facial features are so striking and gorgeous!💘 Speaking to the eye makeup being downturned at the edges, Barbra Striesand always did a reverse cat eye, she pointed the wing liner down instead of up and out. Especially in her early years. I always thought that was so daring and chic! 💖💖💖
Hello - We need really full eyelids for that Penelope Tree look. The eyeshadow is very important for Quant and Biba. We can re-create it exactly like that with our new high-quality maquillage. Thank you for the lovely nostalgia. Be beautiful now ...
Regis Huet was really responsible for creating the 'Biba Look' in respect to makeup. The fact he was very involved in Biba never seems to get mentioned. I knew Regis relatively well and have a copy of his unpublished autobiography, probably one of few people who do. Regis went on to work with every celebrity, magazine and photographer until the late 1990s, becoming one of the most in demand makeup artists internationally for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if Richard Sharah was involved too, whom I also knew, although I can't remember for sure. But he was around at the time and best friends with Regis. Of course Sharah went on to become famous and created some iconic looks for Bowie.
I was aware of Richard Sara. However Regis Huet is a name I haven't come across yet. Thank you for mentioning him! From what I'm understanding as I scour the internet : he worked on the makeup of some the campaigns and in helping developing the actual products. But the ideas themselves and colour stories were Barbara Hulanicki's ideas.
I can't stop looking at you Ewa...you look so, so much like my older sister (who passed away in 1996). It's like watching her come back into my life...I'm so happy. The makeup looks are so pretty; I loved the brown lipstick back in the day.
Wow I'm happy to know I have a doppelganger, except for my niece I've never seen my exact features... chalk it up to being 1st generation immigrant. Thank you for the compliments! And I DO think brown is the most wearable of the BIBA lipstick shades!
This is fantastic. I grew up in the 70s, but high school was in the 80s. I loved the fashion of the 70s so much and was sad to miss it. I collect dolls from the 70s like the Ideal Crissy dolls. The illustrations from the packaging remind me of the BIBA catalogue and now I'm obsessed. You look awesome and this video was so much fun to watch. I've learned so much! Thank you!
What is beautiful is that people during that period were receptive to her aesthetics! Unlike today, when everyone tends to look the same to avoid taking makeup risks.
I absolutely love this video! It is so fascinating to learn how certain people revolutionized fashion and beauty and I cannot believe I have never heard of the Biba look before! Kind of makes me wish I lived in London at the time. Adore that ‘dreamy ephemeral’ makeup ❤️💋
The lipstick was from Bite Beauty (shade name "Kale" now defunct!!! And the lashes are by a Korean brand called "Darkness" and the name of the style is "Romantic". A quick search shows they might not be produced anymore. Just get a pair that have spiky bunches that criss-cross!
Sharon Tate embraced the Biba esthetic, so much. She would have been in London at that time, wore the more dramatic lined eyes, and was “boho chic”, to a t. 😊
oh my gosh i just stumbled into your video! love it! I was so drawn to the Biba look immediately! i bought the Biba fragrance at Liberty House in california… i loved it, although kinda heavy it was still fabulous! had the brownish lipstick too… i still lean to those shades 🌟 This was my era love it or not 🌟
I still wear these styles. Biba was the grudgecfrim the 60’s to the 70’s. In the punk, then New Wave & post-punk clubs the mod and Biba styles were popular. But in the US we were much more influenced by fashion akin to our space program, like boots, especially white boots.
You have Twiggy eyes! Big blue cornflower that would have looked great with the extra mascara or more likely false eyelashes ! I think you are a combo of Italian German Swedish and British ? Guessing? I loved Garbos eyes so mesmerizing. Scarfs on the head the bohemian vibes right. Many actress were models .including my fave actress Angelina Jolie. I loved the British makeup artist that inspired me Charlotte Tilbury but she came along later ….Kate Moss was her client. I heard of the Rolling Stones gf Anita Pallenberg RIP) was a former model ,Italian ,actually very theatrical in the 1960s I wasn’t born until the 1961 )you surely do your history! Plus you’re a makeup artist and a model? Lovely! Ps I love Stevie Nicks ! Wiccan and gothic much am I ? 😂
thank you very much for your lovely comments! Yes ! I do love me a witchy look and the BIBA look hits that spot! I am also a big fan of Anita, Garbo, Kate Moss and Twiggy.
Love this homage and recreation of my all-time favorite line, esthetic and iconic look! One clarification; it’s Hulanicki not Hulaninski. Otherwise Brava!!!!
She didn’t correct you, and I don’t know how she or the Anglo public said her name, but hoo-la-NEETZ-key is correct. In purist Polish, the n is pronounced like the Spanish N with the squiggle, or the Italian gn as in lasagna or anglo ni in onion, and her name would actually in -a, to match her gender.
I like it. You have a great face. I wish we could all just get away with doing any crazy thing with makeup, hair & clothes, any old time. It's just so silly and fun, and why not?
@@makingupthemagic I was talking to my mom about this while we were shopping. She didn't recall it, but there were elements that she did. She was mostly west coast US and fashion wasn't a very high priority, though she liked to look nice, so I see why she didn't notice this happening. Thanks again for the lecture, Prof!
@@kateh2893 there is a wonderful west coast author, Eve Babitz, I was reading a compilation of her best writing for magazines, and she doesn't mention twiggy or any of that. Although she wrote about Fiorucci, a brand that appeared in the late seventies and largely based on the Biba model.
@@makingupthemagic my aunt was several years older and more interested in fashion. I still have her Seventeen workbook, which I highly recommend getting a copy of if you can, if you can't let me know, I might be able to scan mine for you. I wish I could talk to her about it, I'm sure it would be interesting, but sadly we lost her when I was little. She rescued greyhounds, wore cowboy boots and was always smoking. She felt very "edgy."
I was born in 56, we never called this style Biba. It was just Gathas in style, which we all considered Mod. Most of the very trendy ones were too expensive for us, and we’d sew those simple shifts ourselves.
The other model of the day was of course the very beautiful Ingrid Boulting. We would be wearing our Quant or Biba make-up (Mary had a shade called Browned-off which set the look off perfectly), dressed in the maxi-coat and high boots we could ill-afford with our graphic design portfolio under our arms, going into the Studio to apply for a position, wafting a trail of Alyssa Ashley Musk, Quant AM or Biba, and the Director's Assistant would be like, ``Oh, I like your coat ...'' I do think, though, that we should be cautious of too smoky eyes or lips or we risk The Nightmare on Elm Street-effect. Just a thought! Otherwise, re-live Andy Warhol and all the rest. Keep it alive in the present. Lovely presentation, thanks.
Thank you for sharing what it was like to be an artist at that time! Being an artist (graphic design and photography student) it's no wonder I was instantly drawn to this aesthetic! Indeed: it was a bit of a struggle to carefully tread the line between artful and scary!
I was around in those times and instantly recognised your make upbringing look - except for the modern eyebrows. I also had that catalogue, I still have some of it.
That is fantastic!!!! It's truly amazing to be part of history! I'm happy to bring you back memories. I know: I got lazy on covering up the whole brow and doing the pencil thin one! ❤
You are wrong about the rest of the world hating the Biba look. It was huge in Australia. All the late teen girls around me adored the Biba look. A prized possession was a Biba lipstick brought back from London.
Wow. I understand where the Denona palette got its name now. I didn’t know anything about Barbara Hulanicka until this. I looked up her bio and have to wonder if she went to the same school as my father in Ain Kharem outside Jerusalem, where Polish kids were taught. Her father’s fate is very sad. My own father close enough to the King David hotel bombing for items to shake in the room he was in. I will have to learn more about Barbara. Her personal background might have instilled a little extra awareness of or fascination with Tamara de Lempicka, whom I think I see channeled in those makeup looks. Ewa I am asssuming there is a bit of Polish connection for you too! Regardless, I just subscribed for your informative content! Thank you, three years late!
I am just as bemused that, 4 years later, this video is blooming... The exhibit at the London Fashion & Textile Museum must have something to do about it! Barbara is a true genius and her work will never be forgotten! And yes, I am Polish on my mother's side.
Bowie credits his then wife, Angie, for getting him into being more fashionable. Freddy Mercury's girlfriend used to work at Biba as well. Either way: it was the zeitgeist of the moment!
@@makingupthemagic Wow! I didn't know it was Angie's influence. I was also thinking of the cover of Bette Midler's album "The Divine Miss M" at some point in your video. It seemed like it had a Biba influence.
I'm a myopic makeup nerd. So yes I happen to own two faces! Bespectacled me and glamourous me! And you know what? I love it! My theory is enjoy all the lovely "faces" you can create. Namaste
Very interesting. You forgot about Queen, they were heavily connected to Biba, Freddie Mercury's girlfriend worked at Biba. Think of the Bohemian Rhapsody look with the 4 images that was certainly inspired by this type of look, or at least by the silent movie look.
The green and red are complementaries, closest in values on the colour-wheel, strong together but not exactly clashing, while black and white are of course on the very opposite of each other. The hat is important. Really germane to the look. See the Coty Masumi advert: Masumi and friends ... that is so Biba. Helena Rubinstein especially designed the make-up for Theda Bara back in the 20s when the camera began doing close-ups. Later, Twiggy would pick up on this with her doe-in-the-headlights make-up - all eyes and lower painted-on lashes, big lids, but she did apply three pairs of false-lashes by then. How could she still keep her eyes open, she wondered. Quant's Come Clean would not last long to remove all that paint. Gently does it for the delicate eye area. Marisa Berenson actually invented the lower individually applies lashes which were featured in many of her photoshoots for Vogue. There is still some Biba available on Etsy, though somewhat pricey by now. In the end Biba were virtually giving away the last of their products just to close down the store. It was the end of an era. Sad, but we will love it forever ...
Another person left a comment on this very slip of my tongue. Because the look itself is very intense and I must admit was not yet used to seeing myself like that! But today, I would have gone with a cherry red -- that deep dark blood wine red is a bit too vampiric. The monochromatic palette of the jacket and the lipstick makes the look easier to digest for the eye !
fascinating! thank you so much! iirc, Lou Reed acknowledged that he had gotten that black nail polish at Biba in London 🖤🖤 (which of course did not exist in the central NJ rural/suburbs where i was growing up -- however, the Woolworth's in a nearby town started carrying "Ardex Nail Cosmetic" in black, black with glitter, green, blue, white, purple, and every other shade you could imagine -- so of course i saved up my school lunch money and bought nail polish instead of lunch, ha ha! . . . David Bowie, Lou Reed, Candy Darling (gone WAY too soon, but her influence has never left me -- i read Jan Morris' "Conundrum" when it came out in 1974 -- but, i think it was thanks to Candy Darling that being what now would be called "trans" was never a negative thing for me, gosh, i was "jealous" of how glamorous Candy was!), T. Rex, Mott the Hoople, etc. etc. etc. -- all HUGE influences on me when i was in junior high and high school (even though i was trying to dress all in black by 5th or 6th grade -- 1970, 1971 -- influenced not only by all those old black and white horror movies from the 1930s and 1940s, but "Dark Shadows" was wildly popular at the time!) . . . and as others have commented, i think a lot of the Biba look was in turn influenced by early 20th century films, going all the way back to the silents, when film itself was still somewhat in its infancy . . . also true, some of us really did embrace this look for "everyday"! the skinny, almost nonexistent eyebrows (i did not know about Frida Kahlo at the time, but i was only 13 or 14, and my thick bushy brows started to connect into a "unibrow"! AND i wore really thick glasses -- so all you would see were eyebrows and glasses -- i got totally drunk one night and plucked out every single hair -- i was happy and relieved, but my Mom was horrified!), huge platform shoes, velvet clothing, rhinestones, glitter and sequins on our eyelids, etc. etc. (we looked more like we were on our way to see David Bowie, instead of just going to high school, ha ha!) . . . there was a small Biba shop at Bergdorf Goodman, went there with my Mom and younger sister when i was 12 or 13 (RARE trip to NYC, we got to do this only bc Dad's older sister was married to a man who worked for the railroads, so we did not have to pay for transportation) -- i fell in love with EVERYTHING there, especially these pale grape/lavender high heeled suede boots, and ALL that makeup :) . . . i was not "allowed" to have any of that, but my Mom did let me get a ribbed scoop-necked top (in the same pale grape/lavender as the boots) and a deep burgundy cloche hat . . . they are both long gone -- but thank you for bringing back this flood of Biba memories! xoxoxox

Barbara Daly developed the Biba make up for Biba- this is a well known fact- so very questionable the level of research done for film- read From A to Biba by B H
Dear viewer, first of all thank you for taking the time to view my little video. I do understand that Mrs Daly was the one that actually painted the faces of the models. However if you look at Mrs Hulanicki early sketches available in the book THE BIBA YEARS: 1963-1975 then you will see that she sketches the Biba girl look. She is very gracious to attribute this to Mrs Daly. Like many creative things it takes many creative minds to crystallize an idea into reality.
@@makingupthemagic I had tge pleasure of having BH come and speak to my students. Take what I've told you as the truth. It literally came from the mouth of BH.
then a very gracious woman indeed, but I do still hold my opinion on this matter based on her adolescent sketches where she relied solely on her illustrative talent to market her emerging line. However this does not remove any credit to Ms Daly who used her wonderful talent to reinterpret Ms Hulanicki's drawings.
@@makingupthemagic I feel the penny has not yet dropped. I'll give a lesson Barbara Daly, of who you claim no knowledge was infact the first 'star' Make-up artis. Born in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Barbara Daly along with creating the Biba make up Range for BH was also the make-up artist on'The Shining', 'Barry Lyndon' and 'Clockwork Orange'. Maybe you've heard or even seen these films. Barbara Daly also did Princess Diana's make-up on her wedding day, when she married some guy titled The Prince of Wales. A event watched by millions around the globe but obviously not on your planet. In my opinion, to dismiss the work of Barbara Daly and claim the BH is just being kind is to belittle the work of another artist. Something Barbara Hulanicki would not do, she it too gracious a human being.

Speaking to the eye makeup being downturned at the edges, Barbra Striesand always did a reverse cat eye, she pointed the wing liner down instead of up and out. Especially in her early years. I always thought that was so daring and chic! 💖💖💖
This was very informative and inspiring. Thank you 🌹
Ewa, you would have made a wonderful, emotive silent screen star
Best compliment I've received! thank you Athena!
Hello - We need really full eyelids for that Penelope Tree look. The eyeshadow is very important for Quant and Biba. We can re-create it exactly like that with our new high-quality maquillage. Thank you for the lovely nostalgia. Be beautiful now ...
This is such a great breakdown! I've subscribed. Can't wait to dive into more beauty and fashion history with you!
I absolutely love this video 💚 this is great!!
Glad you liked it!!
great video and really informative, love the recreations as well!
Very attractive lady thank you for sharing this the 70's was interesting
Thank you for tuning in!
I would wear most of these clothes!! Omg. I ❤❤❤them!
you seem so knowledgeable about many things!!! i love your videos and look forward to more
thank you so much!!! yes there are more coming!
Ewa you’re beautiful. You remind me of the 1960’s model Penelope Tree. She was a muse of the fashion photographer David Bailey. ❤
thank you! Yes I love Penelope Tree! She was and still is a very avant-garde face!
Mary Quant was popular in the 60's. So was Yardley. I wore it. I wore Charles of the Ritz lashes.
Thank You for sharing! Charles of the Ritz is just amazing in it's vibe... it really looks like some of the high end brands today! I just love it! ❤
I had the awesome tin of crayons by Mary Quant that I purchased way way back in 1972. I loved it so much that I never used it! It was that cool.
@@bibigems that is amazing! It's great to have a piece of makeup history!

That Blue palette blew me away ! Gorgeous ! Would love to see those colors on you for another video !
Just got to the end of your video- LOVE how your makeup turned out! Lovely 🥀
Love this !
I absolutely love this video! It is so fascinating to learn how certain people revolutionized fashion and beauty and I cannot believe I have never heard of the Biba look before! Kind of makes me wish I lived in London at the time. Adore that ‘dreamy ephemeral’ makeup ❤️💋
thank you for your lovely comments. I'm happy you are enjoying makeup that is a bit more magical!❤️
@@makingupthemagic Most definitely! Makeup IS a sort of magic ✨✨

Thanks! I'm happy you enjoyed!
I also want to mention that i vaguely remember the Biba look in the 70s , i was born in 65, loved the 70s , everything was so sexy❤
I love all of the seventies! They were really amazing times. You are so lucky to have been there!
GORGEOUS clothing ! Love the lipstick colors as well ❤
@@debralynnpaxton5238 thank you !!! I’ve always loved clothing !
I love this, please tell the name again of the liptstick color/ brand? And how did you do your lower lashes?
The lipstick was from Bite Beauty (shade name "Kale" now defunct!!! And the lashes are by a Korean brand called "Darkness" and the name of the style is "Romantic". A quick search shows they might not be produced anymore. Just get a pair that have spiky bunches that criss-cross!
Sharon Tate embraced the Biba esthetic, so much. She would have been in London at that time, wore the more dramatic lined eyes, and was “boho chic”, to a t. 😊
I always love Sharon Tate' makeup and her big eyes! Thank you for pointing out that it was inspired by the BIBA look! It all makes sense now!
You definitely brought Bolan into your space!! And the end with the Rose... very good!
oh my gosh i just stumbled into your video! love it! I was so drawn to the Biba look immediately!
i bought the Biba fragrance at Liberty House in california… i loved it, although kinda heavy it was still fabulous! had the brownish lipstick too… i still lean to those shades 🌟 This was my era love it or not 🌟
I love the late sixties to early 80s, best time for makeup!
I still wear these styles.
Biba was the grudgecfrim the 60’s to the 70’s.
In the punk, then New Wave & post-punk clubs the mod and Biba styles were popular.
But in the US we were much more influenced by fashion akin to our space program, like boots, especially white boots.
Barbara Hulanicki lives in South Beach she's super popular in the art/fashion scene

I wore Norman Hartnell's " in love" perfume in the seventies and i was eight years old😅
HAHA 😀you were definitely precocious
Barbara Hulanicki was a trailblazer who has never stopped creating. A Biba Girl will always live in my heart ❤
I heard of the Rolling Stones gf Anita Pallenberg RIP) was a former model ,Italian ,actually very theatrical in the 1960s
I wasn’t born until the 1961 )you surely do your history!
So true! I think there was definitely much more experimentation going on in the 70s. We've become much more boring today!
Ingrid Boulting, biba model, played Linda Rigg in 1966 s The Witches tv movie with Joan Fonteyn
I Love this so much ❤️ you're so cool lady🥂
I like that you speak like a professor, not an influencer.
thank you very much for the compliment.
@@makingupthemagic also, I think you would have been AMAZING as a guest lecturer in my history of costumes class.
I was born in 56, we never called this style Biba. It was just Gathas in style, which we all considered Mod. Most of the very trendy ones were too expensive for us, and we’d sew those simple shifts ourselves.
YOu have Biba 1970s eyes. The Biba look was quite Art Nouveau/Art Deco.
Like a 70's does the 20's look. I think the Gatsby movie inspired the 70's Biba look?
What a fun look that reminds me of tim burton movies
@@makingupthemagic Well , everyone of that era learnt the hard way - do not pluck your brows into a thin line. They might never grow back.
You are wrong about the rest of the world hating the Biba look. It was huge in Australia. All the late teen girls around me adored the Biba look. A prized possession was a Biba lipstick brought back from London.
haha Kate Aye, thanks for letting me know!!! It does make complete sense that Australians were big on Biba! Cheers!
This is so weirdly and wonderfully informative.
I feel like some of Bowie's early looks came from Biba, both makeup and dresses
Bowie credits his then wife, Angie, for getting him into being more fashionable. Freddy Mercury's girlfriend used to work at Biba as well. Either way: it was the zeitgeist of the moment!
@@makingupthemagic Wow! I didn't know it was Angie's influence. I was also thinking of the cover of Bette Midler's album "The Divine Miss M" at some point in your video. It seemed like it had a Biba influence.
Siouxsie went to Biba and bought a black and gold chinese dress!
Biba is my favorite, I wish it looked good with glasses, (I wish any eye makeup looked good with glasses tbf).
I'm a myopic makeup nerd. So yes I happen to own two faces! Bespectacled me and glamourous me! And you know what? I love it! My theory is enjoy all the lovely "faces" you can create. Namaste
Didny Henri Bendel have a BIBA Makeup counter? I was 10 years in 1970.
This was so cool and really informative-thank you! Also, the model at 9:05 is Ingmari Lamy 😄
Thank you! Yes she is very Biba… and still gorgeous after all these years!
Very interesting. You forgot about Queen, they were heavily connected to Biba, Freddie Mercury's girlfriend worked at Biba. Think of the Bohemian Rhapsody look with the 4 images that was certainly inspired by this type of look, or at least by the silent movie look.
You are right! Many people shopped at Biba, including Bowie and Angie! Now Sixouxie someone is saying!
Yardley! Eau de London!
Mary Quant! Jean Shrimpton! Carnaby Street! Twiggy!
fascinating! thank you so much! iirc, Lou Reed acknowledged that he had gotten that black nail polish at Biba in London 🖤🖤 (which of course did not exist in the central NJ rural/suburbs where i was growing up -- however, the Woolworth's in a nearby town started carrying "Ardex Nail Cosmetic" in black, black with glitter, green, blue, white, purple, and every other shade you could imagine -- so of course i saved up my school lunch money and bought nail polish instead of lunch, ha ha! . .

@@makingupthemagic
I had tge pleasure of having BH come and speak to my students.
@@makingupthemagic
I feel the penny has not yet dropped.
I'll give a lesson
Barbara Daly, of who you claim no knowledge was infact the first 'star' Make-up artis.
Yikes! 😮
This is so fascinating and I want to watch, but I can't handle the vocal fry. I'll have to mute and read captions.
