Also I use a K&N air filter & as long as its correctly oiled then it'll filter better & at higher flow rates than the paper one.
Sorry just only saw your comment. We get so many that I miss sometimes a couple. It is so great that you are able to service your car. At least you know now that it has been taken care of. Unbelievable sometimes. But we'll do a service on our Steering Pump, probably on the next weekend, which we neglected to do for 120000kms (not on purpose). 😃👍🙋♀️Vera

I really enjoyed your video and have now subscribed. I have a 23 year old Mercedes SL and I think what you are doing shows that taking a pragmatic approach and learning about your issues is clearly better than leading with your open wallet, I have also had to do this because there are very few garage mechanics now that know how to work on my car. Your calm and competent style and excellent English has reminded me very much of my good friend Soenke in Wuppertal and how much I love Germany so hopefully soon I will be able to visit again.
Great video, very entertaining. Long live Land Rover, the main dealers are known to be rubbish but we have some excellent independent LR specialists in the UK that do a proper job.
Yes you are right of course, and we do not mean to offend any Land Rover dealers or specialists. But on this car, we did not even show half of the stuff that got messed up by professionals. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian i looked at mine today and noticed the sensor on the bottom of the filter is missing, i wonder if this is whats potentially causing my codes
As I might have said, we have a 2000 D2 TD5 which we love, but watching your videos is beginning to make me think I've been too worried about maintaining a D3 if we had to replace ours. I don't like K&N filters either, cheap and nasty but very expensive to buy. We have a Luna too, ours is a mini schnauzer girl... we have three, two girls and a boy 🐺❤️
Thank you for a very well put together video. I feel I need to warn you that the paper air filter element does not allow through as much air as the K&N gauze. I had a problem with a Volvo D3 boat engine that I work on - essentially the engine was not reaching peak rpm & this was the problem.
You guys and dolls are FANTASTIC. Enjoyed it again all tha way. Very interesting, i’m going to change my dieselfilter along with the oil change next time (i followed your advise and i’ve also ordered a spare one)
i subscribed because you are so funny.it is no suprise to me that a dealership would say they changed a filter when they did not. i mark my tires before i have them rotated .caught a dealer once and never went back. i mark my oil filters before i have an oil change. bnever let someone take advantage of you, also check the color of your oil before and after an oil change to be sure they did the job.
I’m a first time viewer and really enjoyed your video. I do think owning a LR is akin to self-flagellation but love the resilience of their owners. I of course don’t have such intestinal fortitude and therefore drive a V8 Landcruiser TD. I shall subscribe for more masochism. 😊
Fabians D3 need a complete rust proofing very soon. You've to replace the filters once a year to be on the safe side. KN filters are more open and must be cleaned with some special cleaner. KN filters last for 100,000 km, but not all engines are satisfied with KN: higher fuel consumption and more noisy. In heavy rain the snorkel sucks water into the filter and will damage it. That can be avoided by turning the scoop / air intake 180°, and it points to the rear. Oil change in the differentials would be a good idea. On the gearboxes it's more complicated. Good video.
No I don't actually, I will ask him when he comes by today. But I might not find your comment again. Please ask me again in the comments and I let you know then, hopefully. We do however post another video this evening with a link to a winch. And I believe it might be the same one. 😅🙋♀️ Vera
Hi Christian and the lovely Vera, lm in rural France and soon as the nearest decent “all marques” garage look at my LR3 you can see the Euro signs in there eyes, lm disabled now so, l can’t do anything for myself, my vehicle has only done 140k l now have sounds like a diff or diff lock grabbing clonk when l try and climb steeply and put the power on to go up - l was hoping it was the drive shaft - runs fine on the flat lv even taken it too the main LR garage they said they don’t know - they use another garage for repairs and bill accordingly! Any suggestions?
Always difficult to remote diagnose a driveline noise. But my approach would be to mount a camera with Bluetooth and sound below the vehicle at different spots. Best with a external microphone which can be glued to the various gear boxes below the vehicle. Hope you find someone honest to fix this. Thanks. 👍
Oil everywhere. know that problem, however careful you are it always happens. Enjoyed your delivery Chrstian, very entertaining. Dealers are basically dishonest, so no surprise the fuel filter has never been changed. Our Disco 3 is a 2009, owned from new & has been brilliant, however can't help feeling things might be about to change. Still drives well but random warning lights keep coming & going which is a problem when the MOT comes around.
👍 Those warning lights can tick you off. But often it's an easy repair if you are familiar with your car. We always look at the Disco Uk forum for tips. Their site is linked in almost every video from us. And at one point in the life of a Discovery a diagnostic tool is uttermost importance. 😅 Otherwise those bings and bongs and 3 Amigos, how we call them, are going to drive you nuts🙋♀️ Vera
I have a 300tdi 90 Defender 90...and I found this very informative as I am thinking about a RR Sport Tdv8 and have heard this problem can also occur on that model too...I have subscribed....keep up the great work and greetings from England
Awesome video! Reminds me of the episode of Wheeler Dealers where Edd fixed that expensive Audi TT gearbox problem with a single bolt. Also reminded me when and why I decided to switch to independent garages here: I had an odd electrical problem years ago (Chevy Cruze back then), asked about it during regular service and the fellow behind the counter said"Well, we could TRY replacing the EGR valve and see if that works." I figured just TRYING a 700eur repair felt a bit unreasonable...
I am moving next door too! we can convert the garage to a double garage workshop with a car hoist and a heater. Christian could make the hoist & heater I am sure. Piece of cake.
great videos.I recently bought my 07 discovery 3 se tdv6. it has 147000 miles and up until its last service from the garage i bought it from it was always land rover main dealer serviced watching your videos certainly helps with not only maintanence but also checking and changing things that may have been missed. i currently have the epb screem but not all the time only occasionally.the box that governs the epb looks well maintained and all the cables look clean etc going to try changing the rear discks pads and shoes and re callibrating the shoes hopefully this does the trick. hopefully :-|
What a great video, and all done in a second language, brilliant thank you, (although the dog was very quiet, maybe he was busy translating in his head). Sorry to hear that just like in the UK, franchised dealers are the absolute worst for maintenance. I imagine it’s because they feel they have guaranteed business from the sales department? 👍
I have a question Lr time, why is 0.4l per minute ok for you fuel flow when on Robbie's Guide he says you need 1.7 -3 L per minute? I am scratching my head with this one
The home maintenance service is still possible on the discovery but the kn air filter is supposed to be a better filter,,, we have had our discovery 3 tdv6 manual gearbox for the last 3 years and it's great,, brilliant video,, I'm formative ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️from Northern Ireland greatly appreciated 👍👍👍👍👍👍
another great vid the pump myt have been louder because you was outside on first time then in garage second time. wish i knew someone like you by me lol
The great David Vizard tested the K&N filters way back and found that, despite their seemingly large pore size, actually cleaned the air at least as well as the standard paper element. The only proviso was that you should use the correct K&N filter oil to retain the dust attracting sticky surface.
A friend of mine had an early Discovery which developed a throttle response problem .The main dealer said it needed a new injection system that would cost £2000.I fixed it with a tie wrap.
@@Vera_and_Christian The bottom of the carbon track on the throttle potentiometer had worn out so the engine would cut out unless slight pressure was maintained on the accelerator pedal..The tie wrap stopped the movement of the throttle on to the worn out part .It meant that it ticked over a bit faster that's all.A new potentiometer (10 years ago) cost over £800 and many owners who had this problem scrapped the vehicle ! Eventually a second hand potentiometer was sourced for £150.
Excellent video, one comment regarding the volume measurement - I couldnt see that anyone else has mentioned it, but you are not measuring the volume the pump can deliver using your method, you are only measuring the volume that can be delivered through the schrader valve at the system pressure, and add to this you have not stopped any back flow to the tank so you will be missing this also. If you want to measure the volume the pump can deliver then you need to disconnect the low pressure feed to the high pressure pump and measure the flow rate out of this hose.
The procedure is out of the LR workshop manual. It needs to be measured this way in order to be able to compare to the LR absolute numbers in the manual. Christian
Great job boys very interesting and fantastic results . You could have fill the filter before replacing on vehicle . Some people only like working on petrol vehicles because of the smell stay with in your cloths and does not wash out
I'm not quite sure what the conclusion of this video was (I watched it twice). The new filter made no difference to the measurements but it solved the issue?
No, it did not. It did only increase the time between failures. In videos down the road, you can see that a new high pressure fuel pump was required and solved the problem. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Thanks Christian - I just found that video actually. I'm getting the low fuel rail pressure low error and limp mode so will start with the filter and go from there. It had a new HPFP last year so seems unlikely to be that.
Changed my lpfp with a new OEM unit from LRDirect; 1.35Liters pr minute, 4psi at the scradervalve at idle, 1psi at 2000rpm. This is with a new original LR fuelfilter and filterbracket also. Pump is running at 2.7-3.0Amps.
@@Carlostrowbridge Aye, thats what they tell me. I’ve tried 3 different pumps now, all OEM. None draws more than 3.5 amps, none deliver more than 6.5psi at the filter, 4psi at the schrader and around 1.3-1.5liters pr minute.
Hi. I have a similar case, I get a car suspension error from time to time. It even happens right after starting it. Turning the engine off and on helps. Was this the case with your friend?
Crazy that the dealership didn't replace such a primary maintenance item... Great video as usual, don't be too precious about the oil on the chassis, it will hold back that surface corrosion.
It was done by the previous owner, for sure by professionals in a foil shop. Now we are trying to put foil on our car, and once we are successful, we publish a video about it. But that might take a while 😅. 🙋♀️Vera
Do you think that the low flow rate from the tank is the reason people are having failing high pressure pumps? It’s supposed to be 1.6ltr in 60 seconds on the diesel. Mine is not even managing 300ml and had a new HP pump last year (I’m now getting P0087 and looking too fix this low flow rate before the replacement HP pump dies) and yours at 400 might explain explain why the HP pump died in Fabian’s car here?
The flow rate is dependent from the fuel temp. Our LR3 runs fine with a low flow. Still, the fuel delivery must work first before replacing the HPFP. Do not use remanufactured pump. They don’t work. Use a new VDO Siemens. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Unfortunately they did replace with a remanufactured HP pump last time. I’m in the UK and my 280ml in 60s was on a warm day so I’m thinking it must be the issue. I have the tank out now so looking at the screen and testing pump etc then will maybe replace the motor and take it from there. I guess there might be a difference between lack of flow due to restriction vs lack of flow due to aging LP pump. The latter won’t affect performance once running as the HP pump can still suck it freely. But if the low flow is due to restriction then the HP will struggle against the restriction as well, which could then lead to errors as well as premature HPFP failure. Just a theory!
@@Vera_and_Christian just putting this here in case anyone follows along - I tested the flow rate at the schrader valve with just a bike pump connection instead of actually taking out the valve core. This was the reason for my low flow readings. So I’ve wasted a lot of time taking the tank out lol. After testing the flow properly it’s all totally fine (about 300ml in 10s). I’ve concluded there’s nothing wrong with my low pressure side so assume it’s an issue with the reman HPFP that was fitted last year.
I had the same issue, the car was going in to limp mode constantly and first thing I did I replaced the fuel filter and the damn water sensor screw broke off and it was leaking diesel everywhere, then I bought an whole fuel filter assembly including the a new filter and sensor which was only a few euros more than a plain filter and thankfully it solved the problem and the car drove perfectly.
Good going with the diagnosis and improving the drivability of the car. You could still have a problem with the low pressure pump like a blocked strainer or it's worn out. Also, Robbie measured about 10 Amp on his D4. Check low pressure pump fuel pressure when driving hard up a hill. You don't want a vacuum as cavitation might become a problem. Do you need the do a reset or something on a D3, when changing the oil?
OK So tonight I can't sleep which is not unusual in the current circumstances! So once I got tucked up in my sack it occured to me that Christian was using his new Chinese tool for removing the underside of your Friends Disco. I've gotta Makita one of these which is what yours looks like. Mine an awesome piece of kit and I wouldn't want to be without it. What I thought Christian had bought was one of those right angle ratchets as used by Samcrac & the amazing M539 Restoration channel. ....👍
I really enjoyed this video, thankyou and i love your accent...Also i was going to buy a discovery 3 2 days ago but changed my mind at the last minute, because of all the horror stories about reliabilty...
When you buy a Land Rover, or any other big heavy offroader SUV, you have to know more about that car than the owner does. Then you are going to get one that is reliable. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
I am English and grew up with the original solid workhorse Land Rovers on every farm and construction site. Modern LR’s are nothing like those older ones. I am sad to see this. Are you in Germany ? Your English is perfect and your accent is wonderful. A very good vid. I enjoy seeing how LR has evolved.
Thanks, learned a lot! Very funny that yawning emogi. Helas Discovery has lots of issues. But then again, this one has many miles / km's on it. That's good. I truely think the older cars are way way better, than the new ones.
Great video! That fancy K&N filter is not so good in the gasoline models as the oil used for the filter tends to gum up the MAF sensor over time. Lesson learned the hard way!
We really can't trust dealers. Nothing like knowing how to do it.
A hug from Portugal
This is true in Australia too. Better choose your local mechanic carefully too.
I know someone who went off-roading on a discovery and discovered hiking cause it brook down Land Rovers are very needy

Mit freundlichen gruben.
👍😃Thank You, we always appreciate when someone really gets what we doing here. 🙋♀️ Vera
Feel of a thriller movie. Great work of Art with Disco. God Bless. Love from India.
👍😃🙋♀️ Vera
You are too modest, brilliant job done.
Excellent job! I did a similar thing with my Mercedes Vito, changed the fluids and filters only for the head gasket to go!
It's goodbye Vito!
😳🤦♀️ that's terrible, but thanks for the kudos on our video. That is greatly appreciated. 🙋♀️ Vera
Well done Christian and Vera great work! I have the a similar issue and now I'm going to change my filter after following Robbies advice page!
Thank you for a very well put together video. I feel I need to warn you that the paper air filter element does not allow through as much air as the K&N gauze. I had a problem with a Volvo D3 boat engine that I work on - essentially the engine was not reaching peak rpm & this was the problem.
Yes, we considered this and Fabian will change the filter again as soon as he experiences problems with the air intake. 🙋♀️ Vera
You guys and dolls are FANTASTIC. Enjoyed it again all tha way. Very interesting, i’m going to change my dieselfilter along with the oil change next time (i followed your advise and i’ve also ordered a spare one)
Christian, of course did not order the spare one. So I have to do that again. 😃👍🙋♀️ Vera
i subscribed because you are so funny.it is no suprise to me that a dealership would say they changed a filter when they did not. i mark my tires before i have them rotated .caught a dealer once and never went back. i mark my oil filters before i have an oil change. bnever let someone take advantage of you, also check the color of your oil before and after an oil change to be sure they did the job.
👍🙋♀️ Vera
I’m a first time viewer and really enjoyed your video. I do think owning a LR is akin to self-flagellation but love the resilience of their owners. I of course don’t have such intestinal fortitude and therefore drive a V8 Landcruiser TD. I shall subscribe for more masochism. 😊
I think you found the right channel for that one. Welcome, and I do also really like the V8 Landcruiser, anything V8 is great 😃🙋♀️ Vera
I would say that looks like the original filter. Another good video 👍
We believe so too 👍🙋♀️ Vera
Lovely video. I want to hear more from Vera!
😅👍🙋♀️ Vera
I like your methodical approach
Fabians D3 need a complete rust proofing very soon. You've to replace the filters once a year to be on the safe side. KN filters are more open and must be cleaned with some special cleaner. KN filters last for 100,000 km, but not all engines are satisfied with KN: higher fuel consumption and more noisy. In heavy rain the snorkel sucks water into the filter and will damage it. That can be avoided by turning the scoop / air intake 180°, and it points to the rear. Oil change in the differentials would be a good idea. On the gearboxes it's more complicated. Good video.
Great video. Thank you. I like the concealed winch. Do you know which brand he has?
We love Wheelers Dealers 😃👍. Yes, that is what they said to Fabian too...lets start and then we'll see... 🙋♀️ Vera
I am moving next door too! we can convert the garage to a double garage workshop with a car hoist and a heater. Christian could make the hoist & heater I am sure. Piece of cake.
😃👍 THat is the plan for the future 🙋♀️ Vera
Always enjoy your videos. Thanks!
great videos.I recently bought my 07 discovery 3 se tdv6. it has 147000 miles and up until its last service from the garage i bought it from it was always land rover main dealer serviced watching your videos certainly helps with not only maintanence but also checking and changing things that may have been missed. i currently have the epb screem but not all the time only occasionally.the box that governs the epb looks well maintained and all the cables look clean etc going to try changing the rear discks pads and shoes and re callibrating the shoes hopefully this does the trick. hopefully :-|
👍💪 🙋♀️Vera
What a great video, and all done in a second language, brilliant thank you, (although the dog was very quiet, maybe he was busy translating in his head). Sorry to hear that just like in the UK, franchised dealers are the absolute worst for maintenance. I imagine it’s because they feel they have guaranteed business from the sales department? 👍
The only dislike 👎🏿 is from the old fuel filter that get ripped at the end of the video 😂. Great video, bytheway!
One thumbs down from the dealership?
In the future, I think if we get any warning related to fuel, I'm going to change the filter first up.
👍😀🙋♀️ Vera
Land rover Werkstätten sind einfach nur wahnsinnig
another great vid the pump myt have been louder because you was outside on first time then in garage second time. wish i knew someone like you by me lol
😃👍🙋♀️ Vera
The great David Vizard tested the K&N filters way back and found that, despite their seemingly large pore size, actually cleaned the air at least as well as the standard paper element. The only proviso was that you should use the correct K&N filter oil to retain the dust attracting sticky surface.
A friend of mine had an early Discovery which developed a throttle response problem .The main dealer said it needed a new injection system that would cost £2000.I fixed it with a tie wrap.
😅👍That's a good one, unbelievable🙋♀️Vera
So.. still not working. I’m losing pressure AFTER the filter. :/
@@iknutis You need 1.7lts pier minutes. Good pump go to up 3.0Lts pier minutes.
@@Carlostrowbridge Aye, thats what they tell me. I’ve tried 3 different pumps now, all OEM. None draws more than 3.5 amps, none deliver more than 6.5psi at the filter, 4psi at the schrader and around 1.3-1.5liters pr minute.
Hey Christian, what could cause my LR3 to smell like petrol, I keep smelling strong peteol smell while parked, LR3 HSE V8 2009
😅 That's how we feel too 👍🙋♀️Vera
As usual Awesome info!
Love the side decal on Fabian's Disco, Any tip from where to find it :)
It was done by the previous owner, for sure by professionals in a foil shop. Now we are trying to put foil on our car, and once we are successful, we publish a video about it. But that might take a while 😅. 🙋♀️Vera
excellent - I have a D1 and really enjoyed this
Do you think that the low flow rate from the tank is the reason people are having failing high pressure pumps?
👍😃🙋♀️Vera
Good going with the diagnosis and improving the drivability of the car.
You could still have a problem with the low pressure pump like a blocked strainer or it's worn out. Also, Robbie measured about 10 Amp on his D4.
Check low pressure pump fuel pressure when driving hard up a hill. You don't want a vacuum as cavitation might become a problem.
Do you need the do a reset or something on a D3, when changing the oil?
We have never ever reset something when changing the oil 🤔, and we do that regularly. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
Good job and lateral thinking!!
What I thought Christian had bought was one of those right angle ratchets as used by Samcrac & the amazing M539 Restoration channel. ....👍
You see, that is what I mean when Christian buys cheap Chinese stuff. 😅🙋♀️ Vera
Yes, we are in Germany, thanks for the compliment 😀👍🙋♀️ Vera
Thanks, learned a lot! Very funny that yawning emogi.
Helas Discovery has lots of issues. But then again, this one has many miles / km's on it. That's good. I truely think the older cars are way way better, than the new ones.
Another great video, I can't believe the price of the fuel filter for this although the Mann filter in the UK is £55, expensive but they are the best.
Recently we bought Mahle filters. Christian
Great video! That fancy K&N filter is not so good in the gasoline models as the oil used for the filter tends to gum up the MAF sensor over time. Lesson learned the hard way!
Good point, I'll let Fabian know to look out for that in the future. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
Great content and explanation how to work on a LR. 👍👍
Great video and so nice you help your friends. Careful vera doesn't leave you for her new friend Luna.. lol
