    We replaced the high pressure fuel pump on Fabians Discovery 3 but it did not result in a immediate sucess. Whatch the video to the end and you will see for yourself.
    Thanks for watching,
    Vera & Christian and Fabian
    The following OBD2 faults got thrown by the ECU:
    P0191-23 in various forms: Fuel rail pressure range/performance.
    This fault is rarely caused by the sensor itself. P2290 Injector control pressure low
    P0087 Fuel rail System pressure - too low.
    All these faults can be caused by the LPFP System as well. So make sure you check this system first and replace the fuel filter.

    As an LR4 owner you get to hear lots of stuff knocking them for reliability things like “Land Rover a company that has been turning owners into mechanics since 1948.
    But I really Like the phrase best said in a Strong South African accent “If you want to go into the bush take a Land Rover”. “But if you want to come back take a Toyota”.
    But I still love my Disco.
    Cheers for your great interesting LR content and showing us how good and very dry Gmb humour is.

If you have watched our video when we fixed the oilsensor on our LR4, we show a couple of ways to keep track of difficult screws. And I have many icecream boxes, so for every part we take off, only those screws are put in. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera

    I am astonished at the layers of complexity here, just as much as your ability to disassemble everything, and more importantly, to reassemble it all without forgetting anything. I think I saw a trusty Haynes manual on your bench, but you seem to know every detail of this engine off by heart without using it.

    • @Vera_and_Christian

      I can sure make it look like that I know what I am doing. All I need to do is to film an empty screw box... And make sure that Vera thinks that all screws are installed... But of course, nothing was left over.
      I do prefer the LR shop manual before the Hayes for such complex repairs. The Hayes is good too but the illustrations in the LR manual are better and more detailed.

I wanted to change my high pressure fuel pump as the next solution but my Land Rover specialist mechanic gently persuaded me to wait until my Discovery no longer starts.

    Nice, thank you for the video! I changed mine a while ago, it was also refurbished, but it came with a printout of test protocol, which should ensure that the PCV and VCV work as they should, even if they are not renewed. Interesting, I didn’t remove the EGR stuff, nor battery, nor cable tree. However, I did have to remove the glow plug thingie nevertheless, which might have been much more fiddle in my case. It is noteworthy that you were lucky that you encountered the more modern type of HPFP, which sits on some kind of holder. Therefore it is smaller and - as we see in the video - very easy to get out. Also, the front side of the HPFP belt case seems to be detachable. In my case, the HPFP has its own “legs” that it is standing on and bolted on with, which makes it so big and clunky that removing it was a job similar to removing the oil separator case, only with 10-fold weight. :) The real difficulty however was that the front half to the pump belt cover is NOT removable in my case, in fact the pulley sticks through it and I had to bend the cover backwards like crazy. I guess I was close to breaking it. …so clearly, in later versions (than my 2006) I think that LR modified the pump and the belt cover to make replacement easier. By the way, I also had to file my pulley a bit. :-) And as a funny fact, I put the old belt (and tensioner) back in because the new one didn’t arrive in time before vacation (a.k.a. big test drive). Alas, changing the belt is relatively easy once your hands have spent hours in that corner… :))

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  2 роки тому +2

      We have a 2006 too, and I really hope that we don't have to change the HPFP. 😅 We changed the belt on Fabians car too, putting in a belt from Bosch that came with a defect 🙄. Getting the pump out on Fabians Disco was also a tough one. Remember we edit all of our videos and only put in the most important steps, or in our case funny situations. At least what we think is valuable for the getting the job done. We cannot put hours of trying in video, we try not to waste anyyones time. We will do a major overhaul on our Disco 3 engine, even considering taking the engine out for that job, during Christians winter vacation time after Christmas. 👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

    Dear Vera & Christian,
    you create very interesting and helpful videos! I'm watching your videos for about 1 year. That time I was looking for the information about LR 3 & 4. The possibility to repair the vehicle as DIY increased my interest to that car, as I like to spend some time with it. I did few test drives on LR 3 & 4. I like the interior, many practicable features, tailgate (not very practicable, but cool :). It is easy to fall in love with this car. I was almost decided to buy one. But my research about the reliability continued. Not only youtube, but other sources show the really huge issues with reliability. On the second hand market so many cars are already with new engine, or with broken one. I would not be able to spend so much time repairing the car and most important - this car does not satisfy basic characteristic as off-road vehicle - reliability. So I decided to use another car manufacturer. Your video helped me to make my choice. I wish you to have enough energy for the future videos! Thanks!

    On my Disco I bought an electronic unit that fires up the engine heater and it warms the engine in the winter before starting. It works off the Headlight main beam. So programme the key fob to work the main beam, click the headlight on for 2 seconds and then click them off again and you will hear the engine heater fire up. 5 minutes later the engine will start and you have warm air immediately in the cabin. Much easier than replacing and breaking the glow plugs.

    Awesome repair. I really enjoy watching these. I am purchasing on when my health improves, (I am suffering with long covid, after having caught covid 4 times and almost dying 6 times from it) which should be in around 8 months time. I have purchased the Haynes manual which arrives tomorrow and will start putting some tools together. I intend to learn as much about the Disco 3 as possible and well aware that the real learning will come as I physically take on the repair tasks (getting the feel of it). I am still undecided whether or not to get the diesel or Petrol 4.4L V8 version. My partner also wants me to purchase a Disco 3. Thanks for sharing. Tony & Laura

    I am sure you have thought about this away from the stress, but you were correct with the crow foot at 90 degrees to the shaft of the torque wrench. That will give you as close to the correct torque that is possible.

  • @ThatCivilGuy
    @ThatCivilGuy 3 роки тому +1

    19:40 The torque is still increased slightly in this configuration, though by a lesser amount than if the crowfoot was straight. In the 90* configuration the moment arm is the hypotenuse of the torque wrench and the crowfoot, rather than the total length of the wrench and crowfoot in the extended configuration. Long story, it is over torqued, though just by a small amount.

    Wow a rebuild pump never thought it existed especially a EU2 spec pump, not undoing the EGR clamps also very weird, I would have checked/renewed the glow plugs while there, my understanding of the throttle is a emergency shut down if the engine runs away for some reason it shuts air from the engine to kill it before it destroys itself.
    By the way I would rather push my Land Rover than drive a Toyota.

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  3 роки тому

      Hmmm. 🤔 Did you watch this video? The pump is a EU4. Of course there are remanufactured pumps. Even from Siemens licensed manufacturers. And we did renew the glow plugs as shown at the end of the video. Opening the EGR clamps required new gaskets vs. removing the bolts does not. What’s wrong with this? I agree with you on the Toyota but we need more viewers. Landrover installing a function to save a run away engine??? 😂Thanks for your comment. Christian

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  3 роки тому

      Hello Andy, I will try to open the clamps next time around. This will be happening when I replace the glow plugs on Veras TDV6. I checked the butterfly valve on my SDV6 and it does actuate on ignition off. So you are correct. On our 2006 TDV6, I could not witness any reaction. It is also not broken. I see the command value and position value in the OBDIl. Simply no reaction, ever. This triggered my comment as it appeared to be unused installed technology… I do find the engine runaway prevention idea very interesting. I would like to simulate it to see if LR really did this… My friend indeed stalls his MAN with a rag in the intake when the engine gets out of control. Thanks for your input. Christian

    • @johnnyclark4548
      @johnnyclark4548 3 роки тому

      😂😂 I should have watched the video to the end and thats my bad. I really lost interest with fitting a rebuild pump, I have yet to see one that actually works. I NEVER had a Tdv6 glow plug ever break and I remove them stone cold, I must also admit if the HP fuel pump does not have to be removed I only renew 5 glow plugs, the one next to the fuel pump just cant get out with the pump in situ.
      Yes the EGR clamp can be reused many times over using the correct pliers to undo and re-crimp them. Another tip with the glow plugs only use the Delphi ones, the fit the 2.7 and 3.0 and 3.6 also cheaper than the Bosch

      @@Vera_and_Christian sounds like a leak in a mechanically regulated injection pump, which has a membrane to the air intake to control the fuel amount, mechanical volume control valve so to speak. A leak in the membrane and the engine can draw fuel on its own through negative pressure in the air intake.

      We have taken out the fuel tank, and you are right, the gauze was pretty dirty. Our intend was also to change the in-tank fuel pump. But as it turned out, the original fuel pump was still better than the new in-tank fuel pump Fabian bought, so we left the original in. We did that right after we changed the diesel filter. Unfortunately, that footage was, in Christians opinion, not good enough for a video. 👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

    Okay so I replaced the high pressure fuel pump twice. Now, I get a error ‘too much pressure’ in the HPFP. Do you guys know what this could be? I pulled it out again thinking it was particles in it might be dragging from fuel tank. But I tipped out all diesel in a filter from the HPFP but was clear. I had already changed the fuel filter as well.
