This is exactly the kind of test that hundreds ( if not thousands) of car mechanics wish they had the resources to do . Top marks for seeing this thru Great video
Besides the good information this video and others in this channel provide, what actually amuses me is the way Vera looks at him every single time in every single video. Definition of love.
Christian's workmanship is second to no none. Always interesting, and the thoroughness that he applies to his analysis of LR components, is amazing. Vera's comments from behind the camera, while always being accurate, alway make me smile. Thank you.
This is really spooky...I awoke this morning with a thought for the day..that being I wanted to know everything thing there is to know about a Disco 3 oil pump... astonishing, my life is complete now...what a great upload...cheers you are amazing 🤩
I know a lot more work went into this wonderful video than is apparent. Christian's craftsmanship is most excellent! I did similar (but more crude) testing with the oil pump of a 1.6L VW Rabbit (Caddy) diesel, so I can certainly relate. I found that pumping the oil heats it significantly, and somewhere I may still have those records. A larger displacement pump may create more heat, but I doubt this will be a problem for you. I would like to reinforce the comment about replacing the pump when replacing the timing belt! My wife had a 1997 Toyota Camry, and I wasted a great deal of time looking for an oil leak - even changing the oil pan gasket - to no avail. The leak was from the intricately shaped oil pump cover o-ring, which had hardened and cracked. After that, I made it a practice to change the o-ring when changing the belt - BUT - as you know, not all o-rings are the same! At one point, I purchased a belt change kit that included the belt, the cam and crankshaft seals, the oil pump seal, and the oil pump o-ring. That o-ring in the kit was not thick enough, and I still had to buy one from Toyota! At one point, I also bought a camshaft seal that leaked, even though it was new. It is disappointing when a large job is finished and there is a problem because of new part quality. This can happen even when a lot of attention is focused on the details. Thank you for your wonderful video, Vera and Christian!
We can fully relate to you. When we changed the oilpump on my Disco 3, we still had a oil leak. We keep an close eye on it since the oil it looses is only minute and just collects on the underbody protection. But we will be replacing the oilpump and all belts and hopefully eliminate that leak soon. 👍🙋♀️Vera
The only thing I have to say it is "Thank you for the effort you put on this videos". You are very creative and at least I am grateful for all your efforts. I think most and maybe all, are grateful. Keep up the good work!
Lovely to watch the engineering. I am English and drive a 70 series Toyota, so I will never have this problem but I can still learn and enjoy. I was already planning to replace my oil pump, I have about 290'000km so it will benefit from a new one.
As always, an enthralling watch. factual , informative, and delivered in a charmingly harmonious environment. an abject lesson in how to educate and entertain , why was school never like this.
What an absolutely brilliant video. I can't believe the amount of engineering Christian does, to perfection, to demonstrate or test the functionality of a part. Vera's laugh whilst all the machining is going on is very contagious btw! Great episode, which I'm guessing took far far longer than the length of the video. Well done, again, you two, you really are a great couple. Take care.
I love hearing a German expert engineer explaining land rovers literally the best of both worlds… Not to mention these guys will answer any question you have within a few hours of you asking very prompt responses with these guys I have to say these are the best bloggers I’ve ever came across if you were interested in fixing your LanRover yourself and learning
Great video - thanks. Loved the comments (several times) - Christian: we have to keep the oil clean as it's going back in Vera's car - Vera: No it's not! - Please note that we are all on Vera's side here 😉 😘
😅👍And of course I got my way, he ordered 10 L of brand new oil for me. I just have to make sure that he does not put it into Fabians car next Saturday. 🙋♀️Vera
Christian and Vera wonder’s never cease ))) wonderful video and presentation from you two and as always very entertaining love watching Christian his detailed explanation)))). 🇬🇧😃❤️😃
Perfect timing with this video. My 2007 D3 is due it's timing belt and I know the pump was replaced with the upgraded FOMOCO one in the last change and so I was therefore considering whether I need to do the pump again. After seeing your tests I will do the pump again. Keep these videos coming as they are a real encouragement and source of great information and fun to watch.

Great video as usual and well needed education on this topic! The only thing I would have suggested had I been there would have been to adjust the precision flow valve such that 1 or 1.5 bar was maintained on all three pumps. You would then have demonstrated the difference in flow rate between the different displacements and levels of wear. Other than that, bravo!
You make my life complete, you always make great entertaining videos and bring a smile to my face knowing the world is a better place for all your efforts

Now that you have your test rig, you should test liquid moly and also Lucas fully synthetic additive with fresh and worn out oil in the different pumps to see how much they help. You might need an oil heater (sump heater). Thank you for the video.

This reminds me of the hydraulic training panels we used in school many years ago. It was a mathematical certainty that a fellow student would unintentionally drench you in Shell Tellus 46.
As ever, fun to watch. Very informative and its good that someone goes to the lengths you do to test and build rigs that actually make sense when being used!. Keep it up, always makes good informative viewing ;-)
German precision with the perfect English terminology. I'm always impressed! Could I say that, speaking so precisely, you speak German English :) Keep it up! You two are lovely, thanks!
I do love your work, travels and sense of humour. We are about to start our youtube channel and travel across Europe to Southern Turkey in our Series 3 109" that has been part of our family for 38 years. I was going to call her ancient but then realised what an inditement that would be on my wife! If we can document our travels half as well as you and Vera - I will be a happy chappy!
Too informative as always! Although I am not an LR owner, I do expect to watch your videos every week. Now, if you do have some information and advices for the rest of us diesel owners, that would be great to hear from you.
I changed my 08 pump with the upgraded FoMoCo pump at 195k km and stripped down the original one - had no visible wear after that km. At 340k now. I've never been happy with the time it takes the oil pressure to build up in these engines - a good few seconds if the car hasn't run for a while, but so far mine is still running very well.
Dear LR Time, I am writing to the Board of Land Rover and recommend that they establish a Centre of Excellence in Quality & Reliability, to be located in your garage in Germany. Thank you both, I have only just discovered your channel as I start on my fact finding journey into whether buying a discovery 3 or 4 is a good idea or not. I love the content you produce, amazing quality and detailed presented in a very through Germanic style ( which having grown up there I really appreciate and miss ) I am slowly catching up on your past videos and following your recommendations for other sources of information and am learning so much, the one thing I have come to realise so far is that to own and run a discovery it helps to have your own workshop 😂. Thank you again for your content and dedication.
Got that right 😅. No but seriously, if you want to buy a Land Rover, you got to be able to fix it yourself or have the money to have it maintained and fixed regularly. And get yourself a OBDii diagnostic tool and hook it up to your car during test drive. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
I too am in the same boat as to buy a discovery or not..i have always managed to do the basic servicing and repairs along with my dads quidance on my cars and enjoyed it..but some of these problems leave a small amount of doubt in my mind! Never the less Christian and Vera's videos are fantastic 👌 thank-you both x
I did the first motor belt change on my Discovery 3 m.y. 2007 at 170.000 km, 7 years ago, but at that time I didn’t know about the oil pump issue; now I’ve found a new & upgraded oil pump here in Italy for less than 100€… I’ve also scheduled a new motor belt change at 340.000 km thanks to your video. Now 310.000 Km on the clock, hope it will last.
Congratulations to both of you! We will wait your next video and see step by step the oil pump replacement. It will be really interesting, to keep to cost low! Thank you in advance.
Hi, your Wurth you weight in gold , Your attention to detail is amazing and the time you put in to prove a point . Good old school engineering . Noah would be proud and he saved all the animals , whilst you both try to save the L R Discovery . Great work you two .🤔 🙃 😉
Brilliant as usual. After living in a German speaking country for some years I got used to the very abrupt way people speak to each other. I would normally expect lots of 'please' and 'thank you' all over the place. None here but Vera seems happy. It does take a bit of getting used to from an outsider perspective. Nevertheless the effort and information given in your videos is very useful and appreciated.
Another fantastic tutorial. I just had the 7 year service (front and rear belts changed) on my 2014 D4 with the 3 litre diesel engine it was at 85,000km and I did not ask about changing the oil pump. Wish you had published this a month earlier. Great videos and I am now watching out for every new instalment. I wonder if you will be doing any videos on the ZF 6 speed transmission? Like how long between servicing under various conditions. Something for the future perhaps when the opportunity arises.
The ZF needs a flush at 80t km according to ZF for example on a BMW. There will be a Robbie’s guide video on our HP8 down the road. Our LR3 is a manual. Christian
Love to watch your video's and love the clear explanation of the techniek and the weaknesses of the Disco. Question: can you explain me the difference between the SDV6 and the TDV6 besides the Horsepowers..?
Really interesting video, nice one. I have heard that the biggest risk of spun bearing is right after an oil change, while the filter housing fills up. Why not have a filer housing with a removable plug so that the housing can be filled up with oil before start up? Keep up the great videos!
I Show in my essential maintenance video how to prime the pump and filter. The oil galley on a TDV6 does not fill slower than on other cars and there is a check valve to prevent draining as well. The bearing failure is not caused by this issue alone I think. Christian
I wish you were my local mechanic. My D3 is about to have an engine rebuild and the issue i have now is that the company wont be as thorough as you. I have already asked to many questions based on watching you guys. You guys are great please dont stop. OH and can we have an update on Fabians engine. 🙏 how is it running?.
Well done both of you great video. I was fixing the gearbox on my lawn mower today and thought it’s Sunday so it’s LR Time. Definitely something to look forward to after chasing detent balls around the garage
I discovered you not long ago and I love your videos!! It's a shame that you don't speak French, because yes I'm French 😃 .. But I take great pleasure in watching you !
What a fantastic video. I bought a new oil pump from a Citroën main dealer I think in 2017 to fit to my Jag XJ 2.7 to get the reinforced pulley boss. I have no idea whether it's a 13mm or 15mm pump though. My car is now at 170k miles (272k km) and so I have moved to 10w40 oil. It rarely drops below freezing in London and I do sometimes drive to Southern Spain. If there any possibility that you could rerun your test to compare the default 5w30 with 10w40? My feeling is that the thinner oil is for lower emissions and better fuel economy rather than protecting the engine. What do you think?
Yes, 5w30 is for fuel economy. 10w40 is ok I think. I found only Total Oil with the necessary approvals. Testing oils requires heat. This is something for the pros. Thanks. Christian
I read somewhere that a lube oil manufacturing company recommending the W40 oil instead of the W30 as viscosity at high temperature drops off thus offering no protection leading to breakdown. Better play it safe.
@@vs6300 and I am sure that I heard that the first Jaguar S-Types with the 2.7 specified a thicker oil, but then Jaguar Landrover changed it to a thinner oil later on.
How do I become a patron?? I love your videos and want to pay something towards the cost. I get so much benefit from what you teach, the entertainment is priceless!!
Another great video guy's my d3 is booked In for new belts and pump but not till February, it's done 130 thousand miles and had timing belt done once before at 77 thousand. Going to have nightmares for the next month now🤣🤣
Just replaced ours, I’m 4th owner, and she just clocked 220,000 on the original pump, wow, I’m glad it’s done! Haha 😆 first thing we did was the trans filter, at 160k. Too late it turns out….
In my MY2008.5 there was also the old housing used. Replaced it when the timing belt change was due, because I read too many complaints of the housing will break after service. A few hundred Euros is still less than a broken engine.
That is always the smart way to go. We will be replacing the oilpump on my Disco 3 now for the second time since it already has 150000km on it again. 👍🙋♀️Vera
Great video.. The engine makes a good noise when the pump fails. Common JLR fail too ....unfortunately. 7k engine rebuld with no help from JLR, they didnt want to sell me the parts. Last JLR purchase for me.
Hi. Thank you very much for your hard work put on this channel. I have been watching the videos for last 3 years. Very informative and entertaining all the time. I am going to order timing belt of my disco 4 sdv6 engine with 180000km runtime. Seems like I should also change the oil pump
Yeah, we always change boths together, the oil pump and the rear fuelpump timing belt) at the same time. And we do that at about a 120000km running time. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
You two are a national treasure for the Land Rover community. Only thing I wish is that Christian would wear a lab coat like Ken Bergsma of Mercedesource does.
We actually have a white one from Jaguar, back when we were still in Michigan and Christian was at Jaguar in the UK all the time. But I just can't find it. 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian I think a dark green coat with your LR Time logo on it would be perfect. Did Christian work for Ford while in Michigan? One of these days it would be fun for you to do a Q&A video and talk about your backgrounds a bit, I am sure many of your fans would be interested. Keep up the good work!
🙋♀️Vera
Yes, absolutely. That is very important. Wait until we show the next video on Rainers Discovery. For him, it's very important that the oil pump gets changed soon, even so he has a Disco 4 already. 🙋♀️Vera
Hi there, why do we have to check if the pump is reinforce? I own a 2006 and the olí light comes on a few seconds after I start the engine, and I thought the needs to be changed. Thanks for your videos guys
The original oilpump has a weak spot in the casting and can cause a complete engine failure, because the timing belt pulley wheel will break off. We show that in all of our videos regarding the oilpump. Here ua-cam.com/video/ZdS5PDCwNlQ/v-deo.html andua-cam.com/video/FqWRhZbNWNU/v-deo.html I shouldn't say "can" but rather "will" cause a complete engine failure, eventually. You really need to check that, either in your maintenance record from Land Rover, or the previous owner. And if you are the original owner, and have not changed the oilpump, you must do that really soon. Also, the rotor inside the pump is reinfroced in newer versions. I don't want to stress you, but you should research and adress that problem immediately. Also check out our videos on what type of oil we are using now. 🙋♀️Vera
@@ulisescaislean6065 Only if you can't find any record of it ever having replaced by someone. But if not, yes absolutely. But also check out those two videos I sent you. We replaced the oilpump in my Discovery 3 earlier this year with an, appearantly bad FAI pump, and we had to buy a new Fomoco OEM pump and do it all again, like 4 weeks ago. I sent you the video. We did that oilpump replacement this year again because the oilpump should be replaced anyways every 120000kms. So if you are over that, one more reason to get a new oilpump. We originally replaced the weak oilpump right after we purchased the vehicle in 2016, but I still have the pump for show and tell, from back then. Go watch this video from our good UA-cam friend Ryan from Outback Discovery. He thought he had the new oilpump, but really didn't. Go watch it, please and give him a subscribe ua-cam.com/video/RAVhTGiLTXg/v-deo.html 🙋♀Vera
Just upgraded my oil pump, new belts etc, was running great then at high revs around 4k lost all my new oil, think ive blown the new front crank seal, will inspect tomorrow
Did the pump have locating dowels? If not, the pump needs to be aligned and must have a Teflon seal. This seal must “cure” after it is in place for several hours. Weird stuff. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Hi Christian thanks for your reply, no dowels on the pump, did come with a new gasket and front crank seal that i recessed 1mm, need to degrease and recheck, take care.

Another in depth video. You two may need to take a break and just do a 3d print project. Thanks again.
😃👍🙋♀️Vera
Buy a Toyota!! 😉
(And a hammer 😉)
I too am in the same boat as to buy a discovery or not..i have always managed to do the basic servicing and repairs along with my dads quidance on my cars and enjoyed it..but some of these problems leave a small amount of doubt in my mind! Never the less Christian and Vera's videos are fantastic 👌 thank-you both x
Buy the D3 over the D4 ;-)
I did the first motor belt change on my Discovery 3 m.y. 2007 at 170.000 km, 7 years ago, but at that time I didn’t know about the oil pump issue; now I’ve found a new & upgraded oil pump here in Italy for less than 100€…
I’ve also scheduled a new motor belt change at 340.000 km thanks to your video.
Now 310.000 Km on the clock, hope it will last.
That is quite a number 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
Christian having far to much fun, well done :)
Congratulations to both of you! We will wait your next video and see step by step the oil pump replacement. It will be really interesting, to keep to cost low! Thank you in advance.
We posted this video already. Christian
Hi, your Wurth you weight in gold , Your attention to detail is amazing and the time you put in to prove a point . Good old school engineering . Noah would be proud and he saved all the animals , whilst you both try to save the L R Discovery . Great work you two .🤔 🙃 😉
Vocês 2 são sensacionais,,vídeos muito bons ,Deus vcs abençoe
😃👍 Thank you 🙋♀️Vera
Christian you're a clever old stick thank you very much very useful information
I have a 2009-2010 RRS, 3L diesel- i must check the pump!👍🤣 Just love you guys! Fantastic video!
My god this guy is intelligent love you guys from Sydney
Interesting video on the other Achilles heal of this engine, great team effort.
Magnificent engineering
Very well done guys, interesting conclusions and sound experimental method.
Yeah we do not talk like that, when working together as a married couple for example, here in Germany, and we do not consider it to be rude. 👍🙋♀️Vera
Christian
An excellent video which is very informative and addictive but how on earth do you get Vera to work with you into the late hours and still smile?
Thats a different video for a different channel.
Hopefully UA-cam caters for that. Lol.
@bat21mh
😊👍Whatever it took to get that engine back to running and out of our garage was worth it 🙋♀️Vera
Love to watch your video's and love the clear explanation of the techniek and the weaknesses of the Disco. Question: can you explain me the difference between the SDV6 and the TDV6 besides the Horsepowers..?
There is no difference. The SDV6 is mapped differently. I found this in the workshop manual. Christian
He put on 2000 km by now, and we‘ll see him on Saturday. Then we‘ll do an oilchange and hopefully find no metalchips 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
Another brilliant video, very informative. Thanks Christian and Vera
Well done both of you great video. I was fixing the gearbox on my lawn mower today and thought it’s Sunday so it’s LR Time. Definitely something to look forward to after chasing detent balls around the garage
😅👍 We had to do that this last fall and it was definitely more difficult than working on our Disco 3. 🙋♀️Vera
Christian&Vera,Fantastic test!
Hvl.
That would be a good test - to see the viscosity differences.
Yes, 5w30 is for fuel economy. 10w40 is ok I think. I found only Total Oil with the necessary approvals. Testing oils requires heat. This is something for the pros. Thanks. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Project Farm has done many tests of the different brands of oil. I will have to check and see if he has done one on viscosity.
I hope you continue your videos, as I enjoy them every Sunday. I have joined on patreon to support the videos going forward 😎
Oh that is great, I hope I already contacted you, if not I will do today. The last couple of days we have been so busy unfortunately. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
Muchas gracias por el vídeo, tengo un Peugeot 407 2.7 hdi y estoy pensando cambiar la bomba de aceite ¿que referencia tendría la bomba Ford?
How do I become a patron?? I love your videos and want to pay something towards the cost. I get so much benefit from what you teach, the entertainment is priceless!!
😃👍 That's great www.patreon.com/user?u=64318856 here is the link. 🙋♀️Vera
This is really super! Wow, what an effort and thoroughly entertaining! Thanks!
Brilliant! (watching this @ 1:00 am)
Another great video guy's my d3 is booked
In for new belts and pump but not till February, it's done 130 thousand miles and had timing belt done once before at 77 thousand. Going to have nightmares for the next month now🤣🤣
😅👍I know how you feel. 🙋♀️Vera
Just replaced ours, I’m 4th owner, and she just clocked 220,000 on the original pump, wow, I’m glad it’s done! Haha 😆 first thing we did was the trans filter, at 160k. Too late it turns out….
Amazing restore.
Wow, absolutely amazing!!!
Do it as soon as you can 👍🏻
Yeah, we always change boths together, the oil pump and the rear fuelpump timing belt) at the same time.
🙋♀️Vera
incredible, so much time spent on such things and so sophisticated to check it out, now I have to find someone to check my Disco 3 😞
Yes, absolutely. That is very important. Wait until we show the next video on Rainers Discovery. For him, it's very important that the oil pump gets changed soon, even so he has a Disco 4 already. 🙋♀️Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian looking forward to watch it, I found a repair shop for changing all that stuff, I my gosh....
thank you
Very good! I liked this episodevery much!
Think wen you make the pump thicker and ad heat you may have a bigger gab?
I am impressed and amazed!
🙋♀️Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian Thanks for getting back to me. So would you recommend to just replace it as soon as possible?
@@Vera_and_Christian Thanks million folks I am really your fan of you both :)
Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Hi Christian thanks for your reply, no dowels on the pump, did come with a new gasket and front crank seal that i recessed 1mm, need to degrease and recheck, take care.
wonderful job
Hi guys great video just a thought are the same oil pumps in the Citroen C6 and Peugeot 407 coupe l have both thanks
You are "la bomba" guys👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The check valve on the oil filter is a much better idea than the useless system one on the new engine the 3.0 power stroke in the US Ford F-150.
