  • Japanese-Style Vegan Unagi
After a seven month break, YdaJun's Plant-based Kitchen is back for its "3rd Season". We thank you for your support and we'll do our best to share more plant-based recipes. Now on to our new video...
Tired of the same old beef and chicken vegan alternatives? Why not try something fishy? Our delectable Japanese-Style Vegan Unagi will delight both picky and so-fish-ticated palates. 😜
    Hope you enjoy!
    Vegan Fish Ingredients:
100g hearts of palm, drained & rinsed
    12g | 1 Tbsp rice flour
    8g | 1 Tbsp cornstarch
⅛ tsp kosher salt, or to taste
⅛ tsp onion powder, or to taste
⅛ tsp garlic powder, or to taste
    freshly cracked black pepper
    Nori sheet
    Unagi Sauce:
    ½ Tbsp sake
    2 Tbsp mirin
    2 Tbsp soy sauce
    1/2 - 1 Tbsp sugar, adjust accordingly
Garnish: green onions and toasted sesame seeds
Tip: If you want the “fish” to stay crispier, cook the sauce first and drizzle on the fried fishless fillets.
    Procedure
For the step-by-step procedure, please refer to the video.

From an ex-Chef, I'm so impressed. Simple clean ingredients, yet I can tell this is going to be delicious. Thank you for your lovely vegan videos.

Wow... I just made it and had one piece fresh out of the pan. This is amazing! The texture and the flavor are really good! If I didn't know, I would have trouble believing is not made with some kind of fish.
Note: the sauce is great, but be careful because it looks like nothing is happening and a few seconds later it has reduced a little too much.

Unagi was my favourite in Japan. I would love to try this recipe but unfortunately I have been mostly bed ridden because of a serious disease. I wish there was a vegan chef with a heart filled with love to cook for me... 💚🤗💚💚

How & who is cooking your food then? How do u manage?
Iv been there before, some years ago. I know how terrible it is &how isolating it is, I remember being so ill & so weak for the few hours a day I coul actually be awake &barely breath, I remember that is was so bad that fir a while I started to wish that mercy would be upon me &let me pass away fast. But I did recover, once I went to a private health practitioner &, kinesiology & nutritionist plus lab US blood tests and lots of others. A plan was made & I got better

There's a family taking care of me. Two teenage girls cook for me as at the moment I can only eat easily digestible food such as rice porridge, rice, potatoes, salad, tomatoes. They don't have any lentils nor beans but soy milk and tofu. I had to reintroduce eggs in my diet and I occasionally ate fish because my body was craving it. I would have opted for a vegan option but I have no choice here. We live in the Cambodian countryside.

Not only I wished for mercy but I also broke a glass to slash my wrists but I couldn't do it. I learned to just let my anger and frustration go and to stay as peaceful as I can. Everything is much better now.

I've never seen anybody use hearts of palm for this! I've seen tofu (which I've tried) and eggplant (which I don't like). I'll certainly try this out!

I tried it for the first time today, and it's very good, it really has that "fish"-y flavor (at least according to my memories, I've been vegan for a while), probably from the nori sheets. The taste is quite salty, which I still like but it is something to consider.

@@sirewan made it many times and it's worth it! I now prefer to make it with tofu instead of hearts of palm but it's a recipe that works and it's very easy and tasty! Have to tell you that you won't be disappointed on any of this creator's recipes! I repeat every single week many recipes! Vegan salami, vegan waffles, etc. Love all of those I tried and keep making them.
