I'm forever seeing the enormous sums airlines spend on luxury travel, but this is the first time I've seen actual real thought going into the economy long haul travellers comfort
This is the best thing to happen to long haul economy air travel in decades! I'm honestly baffled at some of the negative comments. Are you kidding me? You'd rather sit in a seat for 12 hours because you're worried about farts? Some people are such idiots. I guess evolution programs the majority of the population to be innovation-averse naysayers: resistant to and suspicious of all change, no matter how sensible. This concept has been implemented on trains for ages!!! Thank you Air NewZealand for making this great idea a reality in the sky as well! You have my business!
Agreed with you. It's as though all the haters don't realise people already lie flat in business / that there is ambient flight noise everywhere / that you can use earplugs/earphones to block out noises etc. That's the beauty of this option: it's just that, an option. If you hate it so much, don't use it. If you want to pay for a 2-3hr block of sleep that you need during the flight you'll pay for the privilege. Or buy a Skycouch, or pay for business lie flat bed. People will always be negative about innovation, that's their loss.
A round trip flight to New York and back is $2764 with Air New New Zealand and takes 21 hours, so this is great news that they're willing to give each passenger free time in the Skypod thingy. *A win for economy-class and consumers everywhere!*
omfg I have been waiting years for this. This will be a game changer for long hauls and AirNZ will beat everyone who will undoubtedly come out with their own versions.
Probably a long waiting list per flight and with so few it looks like an hourly rental, which would be pointless unless you can fall asleep on command.
Ever Longing it’s a prototype and it’ll most likely have multiple SkyNest cabins throughout the economy cabin... If not, all. Should there be seats and bed, then it’s game on lmao
in 1954, when I was six months old, and my brother was three years old, my mother flew with us from Idlewild Airport, NYC to Frankfurt, via Gander, Iceland, Scotland and then onto Frankfurt. In a TWA Four engine Constellation, with bunks that folded down. There's a family picture of my brother and I peering out from the covers. It took 36 hours.
1:15 did anyone else notice how there are entertainment screens on the back of those seats but then there are no seats behind them so nobody can actually use those screens
Richard van Tricht ; that’s an interesting request.... would you prefer to be strapped down like in an ambulance gurney for takeoff and landing or flop around like luggage in an empty compartment 😂😂
So people buy the tickets for economy seats. Then during the flight they can hire the pods for a slotted period, while their seats become unoccupied? Hmm (You leave your belongings at your original seat- I’d feel very insecure about that) Not to mention people only sleep when they feel secure and in comfortable setting. If you only have a certain amount of time on the clock to get comfy, try to sleep, sleep and finish off your sleep. You become worried and prob won’t get that good of a sleep. I’m not saying that it is not a good idea. I’m just trying to look at it from a different perspective and give a constructive criticism. I want air Nz to do well.
How much surcharge would this incur, though, given that it can only accommodate a small segment of the coach passengers? In the 1980s, JAL provided a Sky Sleeper service, for which we had to pay quite a bit to utilize the desginated semi-private flat space.
You just get 4 hrs, in addition to the economy ticket one has to pay extra ( thou less cost in comparison to business class). Seems it will only work in rotation, considering the total number of economy passenger vs the number of skynest bunk beds . Would be nice if long haul flights have a bunkbed + seating option.
If you took a couple of rows of economy seats out that would give more legroom. Seats would recline better and stop leg cramps. Seats on planes theses days are thin hard and quite frankly bloody uncomfortable!
I like the concept on long haul and ultra long flights that are 10+ hours plus. Where are the going to be located and what the cost will be? I have tried Skycoach and the was on 5 hour flight but was expensive for what you get. Not that comfortable to sleep on.
Skynest certainly is an interesting concept and product. However, just a few questions about its practicability: (1). Can the passengers who book Skynest only lie flat throughout the entire flight? How about if they want to sit up? (2). How do they eat their in-flight meals and take their drinks? (3). Are there "seat belts" to fasten so passengers don't fall out from their flat beds accidently or during turbulence? Does anyone have the answers?
@@sydneykiwi Thanks for your reply. However, does it also mean that for the same bed in a long haul flight, there could be multiple passengers sleeping on it? Say the flight takes 12 hours, and the add-on seems to go by 4-hour block of time per your reply, so potentially 3 different passengers could book the same bed - does it work this way? Or the add-on is good for the entire 12 hours once the passenger books it?
Not sure about the economics of this but I have flown back and forth the USA to Asia dozens of times in economy class. If the prices was reasonable, I would be willing to purchase a block of time in a sleeping pod, especially towards the end of the flight segment. For example, if I could pay $250 to book 3 hours in a pod towards the end of the flight I could easily sleep.
How does this work, Do you book them for like an hour at a time on the long haul? I hope that this works I have been waiting for sleeper type plans since I can remember
What I want to know. Do you buy the sleeper for the whole flight meaning you’re lying down for 18 hours or is it a rental? Do a row of seats share one bunk? (That’s sanitary. Imagine if someone had a cold.) The concept is great but better long term would be to develop aircraft that don’t take so long!... and you know it can be done.
@@donaldducko6580 It can be done... take a look at the Concorde. The fact of the matter is that people prefer cheaper subsonic flights and the amount of rich people that would fork over extra for the Concorde tickets simply wasn't sustainable. Let's hope Boom does something different and they don't flop
@@Creeperownr Not entirely true. The Concorde was a mechanical disaster and maintenance intensive. Coupled with cramp cabins and limited creature comforts, the novelty wore off in favor of more luxurious first class accommodations.
Franni oh shut up. You don’t think we don’t know that already? What are you suggestions then? Re a comfortable long haul flight? By boat? Not flying at all? Or is your only solution b*tching about our carbon footprint yet still doing jack sh*t to improve anything?!!!
I always wonder why they don't give everyone one of these. Instead of all sitting in seats too small, stack loads of bunks and let us all lay down for the flight.
Because that would then make the aircraft too heavy. Aircrafts have a centre of gravity envelope that pilots and engineers must calculate before every flight. If there are a bunch of bunk beds in economy which is usually at the rear of the plane, the weight would throw the whole centre of gravity off and could be very dangerous for the stability of the aircraft and it's position whilst flying. It will also increase fuel usage due to increased drag and thus decrease the aircrafts range and efficiency. Meaning higher airfares to make up for those expenses.
Few questions… if they pack whole plane with those how you will eat? Or where? How about crash position and putting seatbelts during turbulences? I bet some elderly (75-80) or overweight will be happy about climbing on upper beds… or they will start asking questions before ticket purchase, height , weight, age…
High chance of getting a "snorer" in there if lying down as apposed to sitting in a seat. Hopefully they would make people occupy at the same time to eliminate noise. It'd be annoying paying extra if you get a noisy person in there. I can see a lot of problems with this.
great idea finally one airline that is thinking outside the box ! Non of the other airlines for over 40 years ever improved the seats specially in Economy. The problem will be there will be not enough pods to book. Ideally it would be having night flights where majority of the plane is only those pods. The airline would get for sure more bookings. I always look at a night flight and book that one first ! Then 2nd I check the type of the aircraft, airbus 380 my priority. So the airline that thinks ahead wins !
This sounds like a great idea in theory but I worry that ingress and egress, tossing and turning, all that will disrupt people trying to get some shut-eye. Like they might be better off booking a window seat instead.
How does this work? Is it included with standard economy/premium economy tickets? Is it an optional add on? Or an upgrade? I highly doubt this is how it works... But it'd be interesting if, for long haul flights, they had an online booking system for economy passengers, where they each got 3-4hrs in a pod (first in best dressed regarding times) - That would mean for a 12hr flight, approx 24 people would get to experience it per 6 bed pod... I can imagine that would be a great incentive for people to fly with Air NZ, knowing they would be able to have a 3-4hr comfortable power nap... & Would also mean it gets recommended/talked about more, as their are obviously more bodies experiencing it... Just an idea ❤
Each Skynest bed will be available for advance booking by premium economy and economy travellers, cost TBC. Each bunk will be reserved in four-hour blocks - a period which sleep experts claim is equivalent to two sleep cycles - with a half-hour cleaning period when cabin crew will remove and refresh the mattress, pillows and blankets while also wiping down the interior of the pod
I mean it's a good idea. It's not the payment that's the issue though, it's the amount of beds that will fit. I mean economy now is most likely 2-300 people so will it be enough? So if you don't get a bed your still stuck in an economy class seat? Will it be able to fit the plane? Airlines today are for profit unlike in the past it used to be for comfort and style. Pretty sure it's first come first serve. It's a great idea I just don't think it will fit 300 or so economy class passanger
It is highly possible cuz there are these kinds of bunk beds on trains. The only problem is though. How do they make these easy for evacuation. Cuz it looks like it is going to be disastrous.
Just imagine you are asleep and some moron comes in making a lot of noise. And the snoring! They will have to strictly regulate times so everyone arrives and leaves together I'd say.
Hope you’re also spending the time to redesign/configure your disastrous business class lay out - horrendously impractical, uncomfortable, intrusive, and for day time flights; disengaged with the planet outside
Or five people and one mum with a noisy child, and yes I have sat right by someone asleep while their child really really did need changing as they slept ear plugs in
That's already an issue on longhaul flights; allowing people to lie down comfortably doesn't change that. And some snorers will even be less loud if their snoring is aggravated by uncomfortable sleeping positions like mine.
To think that I’m direct to Auckland International Airport AKL/NZAA and Los Angeles International Airport KLAX via St. Louis Lambert Airport KSTL why me?
So do all economy class passengers have access to this or is it only those who paid a fee to make use of it? For those who did all pay a fee, if that is the case - do they rotate or have a time limit if there are more people signed up for than available beds? Where the shit is the belt/harness in case of turbulence? I mean, I like the idea a lot but just from this short clip I see some downfalls.
So I understood that you’re “addressing customer pain points”, but I didn’t understand if this was how it is sold and used. Do passengers lay down for the entire flight? What are the crash preparation procedures in a bed (and does it make it more dangerous)?
It will be booked for a few hours only so a waster of time and money IMO. Then be prepared to get inconsiderate people in there making noise etc, followed by arguments. Stupid idea.
Would infants be allowed in those bunks or anywhere near them? If yes, those paying extra probably won't be getting any sleep for the cash they paid for.
well, it's a neat idea and I hope it gets through, but 6 bunks in Y cabin with 200 seats? The laws of supply and demand would dictate $$$ even for short rest periods
Build 3 boxes in. Not only 10% got it then 30% can use it. Only flightsecurity offices maybe make hassles? When your plane crashes then 18 people get up? Or nobody
If they use the term “product” less and talk more about it as a novel way to fly, I am sure more flyers will connect to it faster and easier and share their views and concerns. Easiest way to disconnect the customer from the concept is to term it as a ‘product’ and commodities it right from the inception. People know that they might have to spend more in initial adoption phase when it enters into reality but why do you want to alienate them in the beginning when you intend to get a traction?
I like the idea of sleep pods ,but not the 3 open bunk beds where 3 strangers are enclosed in a walled virtual hot box talk about a Dutch oven😆 what if some1 ate bean soup or Chile con carne 😂, or decide to self pleasure 🤣 The sides are all open & leave ppl vulnerable to other possible unpleasantries. Good idea bad layout.
@@Yoyo-mh5oh oh a paper thin curtain huh, yea that'll stop ppl from being gross or doing untoward things to a sleeping passenger. What they should is stack em w/ an opening and a curtain @ the end & u slide in feet 1st, complete with overhead lights & air blowers like in normal seats, lot less unpleasant odors, no unwanted touching, & if u need something ya pop ya head out w/ above ur head grab bars on the outer part to slide yourself in & out, but obviously only ppl w/no disabilities are going to be able to do it,which will prompt lawsuits by disabled & larger flyers about not having sleep pods 4 them & then there will of course be no room for all types so after spending 10s of millions in research & development ,they will have to scrap the whole idea☹️😆 So it's a moot point & idea in the 1st place, but if they steal my design mentioned above & do not compensate me,u might have to be witness in lawsuit😁
The space it uses is enough to put 6 business class seats , instead of 1 economy seat and 1 bed. These people can say whatever they want if customers are willing to pay first class seat's price.
Let’s hope they tell their staff about the product as well....as I will never book air New Zealand..ever again....after the 2 extra seats I paid for with my Air New Zealand Sky Bed......were given to two other passengers ....15 mins after take off on a 12 hour flight. As staff appears to have NO IDEA I’d paid for them!! WOEFUL. And the complaint lodged after.....they could not have cared less.
Ay so how big are the beds. Asking since I had to get a 6" extension to my matress in a normal bed (I'm 6'5" btw) or is this going to be more of the no leg room scenarios of them making it to fit more people in a single space?

So I understood that you’re “addressing customer pain points”, but I didn’t understand if this was how it is sold and used. Do passengers lay down for the entire flight? What are the crash preparation procedures in a bed (and does it make it more dangerous)?
No way you would be allowed in there for take off and landing.
It will be booked for a few hours only so a waster of time and money IMO. Then be prepared to get inconsiderate people in there making noise etc, followed by arguments. Stupid idea.
The Mile High Club just introduced a new venue!😁
What about body odors? Ppl may take off shoes and socks. Or snoring? It's a nice idea but the practicality is where I'm confused
This is awesome Air NZ
Would infants be allowed in those bunks or anywhere near them? If yes, those paying extra probably won't be getting any sleep for the cash they paid for.
well, it's a neat idea and I hope it gets through, but 6 bunks in Y cabin with 200 seats? The laws of supply and demand would dictate $$$ even for short rest periods
Looks like a crew rest without a door
looks alright, no sale for claustrophobes tho
Build 3 boxes in.
Not only 10% got it then 30% can use it.
Only flightsecurity offices maybe make hassles?
When your plane crashes then 18 people get up?
Or nobody
Just give me a 24-hour stopover anytime.
This is where I will meet my demise once they hear me snoring.
There's curtain at the side of the bed. It's still crowded but that's why people pay for business class😂
We need like this in flights to Pakistan from Texas...
i dont reall get, who gets access, is there a queue?
When is this going to come out for public use? In 2029? 🤔
When is this coming out?
Where's the ladder for these people to get to top bunks?
The space it uses is enough to put 6 business class seats , instead of 1 economy seat and 1 bed. These people can say whatever they want if customers are willing to pay first class seat's price.
Let’s hope they tell their staff about the product as well....as I will never book air New Zealand..ever again....after the 2 extra seats I paid for with my Air New Zealand Sky Bed......were given to two other passengers ....15 mins after take off on a 12 hour flight. As staff appears to have NO IDEA I’d paid for them!! WOEFUL. And the complaint lodged after.....they could not have cared less.
I cant believe this is economy
Ay so how big are the beds. Asking since I had to get a 6" extension to my matress in a normal bed (I'm 6'5" btw) or is this going to be more of the no leg room scenarios of them making it to fit more people in a single space?
You definitely won’t fit lol
Is it actually going to be built and installed or is this just a concept demonstrator
They always make things happen!!
What happens if you’re a snorer?
We're almost there, now you just need to knock us the heck out for the whole flight and it would be perfect
Use sedatives!
