After just receiving my AYN Odin a few weeks back, and having a Steam Deck on pre-order for later this year, this is an easy pass. As stated, you can see how they put in the least amount of work possible by just using the last device, and inserting a new chip set. While I understand that level of thinking, it's not a great idea when the last device was so far from perfect to begin with. The AYN team has already hinted at slapping a newer Snapdragon to the Odin down the line, and that's a great idea, as the Odin is just about perfect as it sits. So another version can bypass most R&D, slap a newer chip in, and their off to the races. They can even upgrade the screens at that point if they want, as 95% of the system already exist. The GPD XP+ could be a solid buy at the discount, depending on a persons current needs, but probably not so much at full retail. As always Russ, thanks for the informative video, as it's always good to know all the ins and outs to a device like this.
Been using the original GPD XP and Odin pro for streaming AAA games lately and theres a major difference in Analog sticks any game where you need to aim using the right stick is so much harder on the Odin with the tiny sticks compared with GPD which is far better for aiming, this has made the steam deck still the best option for me( full size analog sticks ) ahead of the Loki and Aya neo air even if some models are going to be more powerful.

I still say their BEST device was the GPD XD. The design, while not 100% perfect, was a great! It used to be my go to on a plane. I could pay my games AND put it to sit while watching a movie. Great video as always Russ!!
As a buyer of the original XP, I feel screwed up by GPD... I would have been interested in a DIY upgrade like they did for the Win Max, but no they don't do it. Disappointing. Going to sell it, I'm just blown away by my Odin Pro at any rate.
hey, I'm new here... just wanted to know anbernic win600 vs gpd xp plus... which is better?? or can you suggest anything better... please and thank you 😊🙏
They are two totally different machines. The Win600 is an x86 handheld, so it can run Windows, SteamOS, and Batocera, while the GPD XP+ is Android-based and can only run that OS. They are about the same in terms of performance but it'll really depend on what type of games you want to play on it (PC vs Android), and the battery life on the XP+ is about 6x longer than the Win600.
@@RetroGameCorps Thank you so much... Guess we can't have everything in one device just yet... I'll wait for it... Just stick to emus on my phone for now... 😊🙏 Thank you again for clearing up the fog for me
Not really. Maybe 5% Of DS/3DS games actually require you to look at/use the bottom screen enough to justify you needing it to be the same size. All the glaring flaws of this device doesn't just suddenly get excused when considering DS performance. You still have a massive joystick getting in the way of good gameplay for nearly all games. Screen Toggle more than suffices for 90% of DS games and the rest are mostly ideal with just a half-sized small screen to the side of the big screen. You almost never need matching screens - DS was a mostly 1 screen device with a gimmick attached. Yes the side by side is lovely and neat with no black bars but that alone hardly makes something the best DS experience.
Someone else may have noted that the fps controller attachment was mistakenly called the moba attachment. The moba attachment is just the little bar cover.
Yeah I agree with your end assessment about going all the way with the phone thing. If they would have I could have used this as my primary phone and be able to clip both modules on each side for when I wanted to game. Would have sold me on it if they did that. Even with 4G in 2023. Hopefully they make it even better with the next iteration. And a 16:9 aspect ratio. Then this device would be selling like hot cakes.
I also like to recommend the console launcher instead of ATV Launcher, I used to use ATV but after this other launcher was released I fall in love with it, you should try it, it's very good
It's a testament to how enjoyable your videos are that I've watched this one in its entirety, despite having no desire to buy an Android gaming machine.
Would you be down to do a top 5 games of yours on each system? Including current portmaster, pico 8, anything that would be on retro handheld devices, but mostly the usual consoles that most retro handhelds play? I ask because literally every time you drop a video showing a clip of the games. I find a game I haven't played that I need to add to my device! Haha I didn't know either of those Sega saturn games. Or even like a top 5 games for each console you should play if you havent..something like that? I'd be interested in you down a video on romhacks and homebrews. Your videos I always enjoy most than others, so even different types of content related to retro handhelds I'm here for if you're down :)

I have a non Android phone that I can't switch due to personal reasons. Anywho, I'm really torn as to which device is the best to buy at this very moment for game streaming and light emulation. There are not many products out there but there are still quite a few to consider.
Hey Russ, love your videos. Very helpful in retro gaming. Hope that you can do an in depth review of the GDP XD plus with all the features and firmware updates. Thanks and more power to you. Let’s start gaming….
I have the GPD Xp and really like it. My only whish is that it would play my PlayStation roms. Is it worth shelling out the money just for that feature...?
I agree to just buy a controller for your phone and save $300+ over this. It's kind of a neat handheld but I would probably regret not saving that money for one of the new windows devices coming out.
@@jamesyu5212 "The most useful word in the English language is "so" at the beginning of a sentence. It tells us to stop reading the rest of the sentence because it's going to be a ridiculous interpretation of someone's comment."
Are you able to buy a controller and a phone for just 38 dollars , since the GPD xp plus costs 338? There , I took out the "so" in my statement. What's your response? I'm genuinely curious how you can weasel yourself out of this argument without resorting to pseudo intellectualism , arrogance and elitism.
Great to see definitive proof of why Switch-style joysticks are better for at LEAST the right analog. The shocking thing is, GPD is one of the only companies to have solved the issue of full-sized joysticks interfering with their buttons, with the sunken joysticks of their GPD Win Max 3, and yet they didn't even use that here. Just truly lazy.
Honestly, I knew I wouldn’t want this handheld in the first place, I just watched the video to support your channel. I would rather get a Retroid Pocket 2 + , or wait for the Odin Lite to release.
I got the RP2+ as a stop gap because the Odin Lite kept getting delayed and haven't regretted it. Even should I eventually get something more powerful, it'll still be the best you can get that's truly pocket sized for some time.
I liked my Retroid Pocket 2+ for a couple of my PS1 RPG's, but overall I prefer my rg351v in that price point. Way better screen and better quality buttons (although the landscape format of the Retroid with the stacked shoulders is definitely more comfortable for long sessions). I feel like the speed of the RP2+ kinda went to waste as I personally find 3.5" to just be too small once you get into the systems that need that extra horsepower. I'd probably wait for the Odin for those more demanding titles.
I commend GPD for trying. Sure it’s beats the Odin but they really should have matched the price with the Odin. The steam deck has kinda made things a bit awkward with it’s crazy 400 tag. The question everyone is gonna just ask is oh why not just get a steam deck..
Sure but then I’d have to map the spin jump to A, which isn’t ideal either. There are definitely ways around it but the whole thing about retro emulation is recreating the original control scheme too, so we can relive those epic childhood memories. And unfortunately in that sense it doesn’t line up well.
i want to play gamecube, n64, and saturn good without upscaling them to death, ps2 would be cool but not needed. anbernic 351 cant quite, what kind of device should i be looking at?
Unfortunately GameCube does take quite a bit of power. So at this time only the Odin or this device could comfortably play GameCube. For N64 or Saturn you could use the Retroid Pocket 2+ and they’ll play great at a native resolution.
@@RetroGameCorps i think i really like the sound of the performance of the Retroid Pocket 2+, but I'm struggling to get over that goofy chin it has.....

Seems like they have a working prototype that they may still be waiting on parts and suppliers, which is subject to change. Just me maybe.
I did, like I mentioned in the video I tried stand-alone DuckStation and all the RetroArch cores. They all had the same poor performance, which was puzzling.
@@RetroGameCorps I apologize. I didn't hear you tried other. It's what I get for multitasking. Appreciate the videos and looking forward to your views on and rwview of the Loki and AyaNeo Air Plus. If they used the latest (or rather, last year's) Snapdragon chipsets, and were able to do what you said in the video - left and right detachable controls (but could also be used as a single controller) - I would want to spend that/more money I'm sure I posted this in other videos, but really, the convenience of a Switch has spoiled me on the possible experience of a portable, dockable console - using telescopic controllers on a smartphone that can display out is still closer to that level of convenience than any of the dedicated handhelds available, unfortunately (you just still have to charge the controller and the phone separately). Isn't the Switch not That far off from an Android based device? How did they figure it out! (And then choose to unfigure it out for the Lite 🙄)
@@gibiati8295 oh, I was referring to the Switch being able to charge (essentially) two Bluetooth controllers, which can also be used as one combined, or two individual controllers, can also switch those configurations on the fly, etc - basically, the Switch is the first handheld/console I know that does that/can do that, and I would like a future android handheld to be able to do the same But yes, Nintendo historically uses weaker/older hardware (which makes their capabilities even more amazing)
It's an old Galaxy S9 with a Gamesir controller. If they want to compete with the Ayn Odin, they needed to at least make it look and feel like a handheld console. This just looks shoddy and thrown together.
Every time i see someone say "the thumbstick gets in the way of the buttons" i cannot fathom how you guys use or put your hands on these devices. First and foremost, stretching your thumb and fingers that way is not good for your hands. It plain isn't. Second... you don't even need to do that. I would post a photo if i could. Angle out your hand, your thumb will come just right of the stick and your hands will have a much more comfortable position. My hands hurt just watching how you (but many others too) put your fingers on a controller :P Have you really never tried a different way of holding the console/controller?
I want to try and describe how i would suggest you to hold this thing. Rest your console on your ring fingers, the palm of your hands should mostly be against the sides of the controller, and your thumb free to move without hassle from the thumbstick to the face buttons without any difficulty or overlapping. Index fingers are BELOW the triggers, supporting the console from there and moving on the triggers only when needed. I don't know if you can read this message or if you will actually try... but i am quite sure you will find this far more comfortable.

😊🙏 Thank you again for clearing up the fog for me
Probably the best emulation handheld for DS, with that width.
Video is already a bit older, however quite interesting as the upcoming Ayaneo Pocket Air will feature the same SoC (Dimensity 1200).
Great video thoroughly enjoyed it 🙂
Pass on this one, great video my dude!
How did you set the live wallpaper in the gpd XP plus?
Yeah I agree with your end assessment about going all the way with the phone thing. If they would have I could have used this as my primary phone and be able to clip both modules on each side for when I wanted to game. Would have sold me on it if they did that. Even with 4G in 2023. Hopefully they make it even better with the next iteration. And a 16:9 aspect ratio. Then this device would be selling like hot cakes.
I also like to recommend the console launcher instead of ATV Launcher, I used to use ATV but after this other launcher was released I fall in love with it, you should try it, it's very good
What's the name? Just console launcher?
@@svcross-do yep, from K2 MEDIA
@@GhsVilela Thank you for your quick response! I'll try it.
I'm wondering if you can give me some more detail about the D-Pad on this device. It looks super raised but without a lot of travel.
It's a testament to how enjoyable your videos are that I've watched this one in its entirety, despite having no desire to buy an Android gaming machine.
Thanks for watching regardless, Gareth!
One question if broke down where do i get part for it? Do you know where to get any part
where did you get your live background?
Lte + phone capabilities meaning you can use it as a phone too? (Call, text, etc)
reminds me of my moto g stylus phone and my gamesir x2 controller combo
similar setup and it was only around $250
Does the HDMI output work at 30 or at 60 Hz? How does Lemuroid behave when the HDMI cable is plugged in, does it mess up the games' framerates?
Loved this review. Could you or someone tell me what is the exact title of the pc game shown ‘Moonlight’? I can’t seem to find this on steam.
How do I format SD card to exfat? The system formats it to fat32 and I can’t add roms exceeding 4G. Thanks!
Gaming will be so fun with this mediatek-powered GPD XP plus handheld.
Just out of curiosity, is Champions of Norrath playable on it?
Can you just remap the X+A to Y+B to try and take care of the issue hitting the right stick?
As always another GREAT video & thanks.... Now I want one! Any chance you can do a video on Retroarch bezel and overlays in the future. I am sure I am not the only one that smuggles with this.
Hi, there is anyway to put launch box on immersive mode? Without showing top bar of Android
how is visible screen size when set to 16:9 vs odin? looks pretty similar
If I wanted a handheld purely for Sega Saturn emulation, what would you suggest?
Do you think people would purchase this as a cellphone option if they allowed both sides to slide off with covers?
I have a GPD XP and think it is great. Stadia give it PC games but Android premium is a fast growing ecosystem
6'' should be optimal for this type of handheld,1080p oled and same soc or even give it dimensity 8100 will be another chefs kiss
I have the GPD Xp and really like it. My only whish is that it would play my PlayStation roms. Is it worth shelling out the money just for that feature...?
FOR N64 emulation you have 2 ratio options:
4:3 - gives significant boxes on the sides
16:9 - teaches you how to live with your own disappointment
I agree to just buy a controller for your phone and save $300+ over this. It's kind of a neat handheld but I would probably regret not saving that money for one of the new windows devices coming out.
So you can buy a phone and a controller for just 38 dollars? Seeing that the GPD XP+ just costs 338? Try harder to be more informed bro.
@@jamesyu5212 "The most useful word in the English language is "so" at the beginning of a sentence. It tells us to stop reading the rest of the sentence because it's going to be a ridiculous interpretation of someone's comment."
@@TMGQ no. Your argument got bodied. Get over yourself.

Hey, RGC. What device do you recommend for full speed PS2 and GameCube emulation without upscaling? (Kinda partial to the pixelated look).
Love the look and it seems to have a great grip for comfort and control. 👾👾🤩
Drastic emulator cannot open any folders in GPD XP plus. Do you know how to solve it?
I have an XP ... do you suggest an upgrade to the XP + model?
When it comes to android games, can you map controls with the buttons like the Odin?
Yes, it has button mapping, and the buttons will switch depending on what attachment you use. I show off the feature in this video!
First to market with a Snapdragon 865, 8gb ram and 1080p screen gets my money. I'd opt for that over a Steam Deck.
Im getting the miyoo mini.
Don't get a RP2+....it's a piece of shit. I regret buying mine every fucking time I look at it smfh.
@@depressedpersiantowtruckman And now you're a depressed Persian tow truck man.
I commend GPD for trying. Sure it’s beats the Odin but they really should have matched the price with the Odin. The steam deck has kinda made things a bit awkward with it’s crazy 400 tag. The question everyone is gonna just ask is oh why not just get a steam deck..
The value of the $399 Steam Deck can't be beat.
But the availability of it certainly can.
I really want to see them do a refresh of the XD mostly because I love clamshell systems
I reached a point where ergonomics for me outweighs performance. I'v had the same problem with the vita with its right analog stick location.
Better than the Odin pro? Should i cancel the Odin and get this one instead?
Wouldn't your Super Mario control problems be prevented by just using Y for running and B for jumping instead?
Sure but then I’d have to map the spin jump to A, which isn’t ideal either. There are definitely ways around it but the whole thing about retro emulation is recreating the original control scheme too, so we can relive those epic childhood memories. And unfortunately in that sense it doesn’t line up well.
@@RetroGameCorps Fair enough!
Might get one, still seems to be a good option in 2023.. The PS1 issue is very very weird though!
same price as odin pro right now, which one do you recommend?
i want to play gamecube, n64, and saturn good without upscaling them to death, ps2 would be cool but not needed. anbernic 351 cant quite, what kind of device should i be looking at?
Unfortunately GameCube does take quite a bit of power. So at this time only the Odin or this device could comfortably play GameCube. For N64 or Saturn you could use the Retroid Pocket 2+ and they’ll play great at a native resolution.
@@RetroGameCorps i think i really like the sound of the performance of the Retroid Pocket 2+, but I'm struggling to get over that goofy chin it has.....
So which one is better to take?ayn odin pro or gdp?i want to preorder now 🙏
I prefer the Odin because of how well it plays retro games (which are my favorite), and for the screen dimness and overall comfort.

I appreciate these preview, I do.... but... I wish these companies would send these test units out much, much closer to being actually available to consumers, not at the beginning of the Indiegogo campaign. Seems like they have a working prototype that they may still be waiting on parts and suppliers, which is subject to change. Just me maybe.

Definitely not, it’s quite a bit thicker even not factoring in the grips.
@@RetroGameCorps thanks for letting me know. I was considering getting one for that purpose.
Don't forget that they added hull sensors for the analog sticks this time around.
Good catch, thanks! Functionally they feel the same to me, but they are probably going to have better longevity.
I'm sure that's why they did it. Great review Russ. I only knew about the hull sensors because of the phawx's review 😂.
Did you try different PSX cores?
I did, like I mentioned in the video I tried stand-alone DuckStation and all the RetroArch cores. They all had the same poor performance, which was puzzling.
@@RetroGameCorps I apologize. I didn't hear you tried other. It's what I get for multitasking. Appreciate the videos and looking forward to your views on and rwview of the Loki and AyaNeo Air Plus. In a Mac user and wouldn't mind a device I can play some older 3D games as well as emulators.
One thing to add: Using the Border Project borders with RetroArch helps with the display being so large. It's not the best but it does look a lot better
If they used the latest (or rather, last year's) Snapdragon chipsets, and were able to do what you said in the video - left and right detachable controls (but could also be used as a single controller) - I would want to spend that/more money
I'm sure I posted this in other videos, but really, the convenience of a Switch has spoiled me on the possible experience of a portable, dockable console - using telescopic controllers on a smartphone that can display out is still closer to that level of convenience than any of the dedicated handhelds available, unfortunately (you just still have to charge the controller and the phone separately).
Isn't the Switch not That far off from an Android based device? How did they figure it out! (And then choose to unfigure it out for the Lite 🙄)
The Switch is far off these devices. It is 1/5 as powerful as this D1200 chip.
@@gibiati8295 oh, I was referring to the Switch being able to charge (essentially) two Bluetooth controllers, which can also be used as one combined, or two individual controllers, can also switch those configurations on the fly, etc - basically, the Switch is the first handheld/console I know that does that/can do that, and I would like a future android handheld to be able to do the same
But yes, Nintendo historically uses weaker/older hardware (which makes their capabilities even more amazing)
This is not a smartphone for sure. But they did really well with the huge battery and the Dimensity 1200 chipset.
It's an old Galaxy S9 with a Gamesir controller. If they want to compete with the Ayn Odin, they needed to at least make it look and feel like a handheld console. This just looks shoddy and thrown together.
This is everthyng I need to know, thank you.
This looks sick af, I'd totally get one if I could lol
What kind of analog does this use? switch or psvita it's useless if you use parts that don't have spare parts
My hands hurt just watching how you (but many others too) put your fingers on a controller :P
Have you really never tried a different way of holding the console/controller?
I want to try and describe how i would suggest you to hold this thing. Rest your console on your ring fingers, the palm of your hands should mostly be against the sides of the controller, and your thumb free to move without hassle from the thumbstick to the face buttons without any difficulty or overlapping. Index fingers are BELOW the triggers, supporting the console from there and moving on the triggers only when needed.
I don't know if you can read this message or if you will actually try... but i am quite sure you will find this far more comfortable.
