And can we please include info on how to make it last if you have oily eyelids? Genuinely the most difficult because the oils seep through during the day and not only ruin the eyeshadow but also cause even waterproof mascara to smudge
@@herbie13 I managed to find 1 primer that worked ok (but not amazing) but it's been discontinued so now that's even worse. I totally understand having a 'tacky base' for eyeshadow to stick to, but they just don't keep the oils at bay long enough. It's almost like I need a mattifying base for the oil and a sticky base over that for the eyeshadow

I'm in absolute agreement on the skin prep. It makes a HUGE difference. I love Neutrogena hydro gel water gel moisturizer. It works so great under makeup and doesn't pill. I go in with Milk Hydro grip primer after to get my skin is sticky so it holds my makeup in place.
@@carolann6158 I think it would be good on dry skin if let your moisturizer sink in for a while then use the primer. I used to spray the setting mist as the final step. But after watching this video and after one week of doing the 'setting mist after all creams' method: what a make-up game changer! The game-changer for my oily skin was definately SERUMS! They are not as heavy as creams and absorb somewhat easier also. I usually go for a serum more water-based instead of oil based, even looking for as little amount of oil as I can but looking for it to have other moisturizing ingredients. For example, what I currently use as a fave for skin prep is a hyaluronic acid serum :)
Primers have never seemed to do for me what they do for other people. I have oily/combo skin and it's taken years to curate a skincare routine that works for me. Holy crap this was really eye opening for me! My face is an oil slick so I always just assumed that more powder will have to do. I always end up reapplying constantly and looking like a baked cakey disaster by the end of the day. Thank you for this!
I've got combo/oily skin that gets extra oily when I wear makeup. I've found that really nailing your skincare with moisturizers and serums that are not too moisturizing is key! I'm definitely of the 'moisturizer as primer' camp. Also, using a really oil-controlling powder for your oiliest areas (T-zone, cheek pores, etc.) and more of a regular face powder for less oily areas, in my experience, helps everything look less patchy and caked.
Thank you! I’ve seen so many videos about skin prep, but no one goes into detail about what kind of skin prep people should use under different circumstances, definitely love the video!
Hi Alex- I’m 55 and just started my makeup journey this year. I appreciate you and your work so much. This topic is big for me. Between having combo skin (xtra oily t zone) and lovely hot flashes my makeup longevity is quite challenged. I will be trying all the techniques you offered and I wondered if you would offer some wisdom on the order of sunscreen. Before primer? After primer? And is there a best amount of time to wait after prep to start applying my complexion products? Thank you so much!! You are a gift.
I use the Supergoop ceramide sunscreen oil, because I am super dry. I don’t use primer, but according to skincare creators I watch, you should be using sunscreen after primer. I don’t do it that way, I put my sunscreen on first, then moisturizer, then I do my eye makeup, then foundation. Hope that helps.
I believe it's recommended to wait 30 minutes after applying sunscreen before putting on makeup. But I rarely wait that long. 😆 I apply sunscreen after moisturizer and before primer because I heard it's supposed to be the last skincare product before applying complexion products.
@@trishamarie Interesting about sunscreen after primer. The skinfluencers I watch generally infer sunscreen before primer since primer is considered a makeup product and not a skincare one.

So helpful thank you so much! I have been using the inkey list mineral daily sunscreen which I found works so well as a base moisturiser plus spf and it gets nice and sticky. I thought it might help me and after watching your video I understand why it did!
I added this comment earlier today at another video from you, but I guess this video is better :) (I have normal to lightly oily skin) I love how the foundation looks on a very moisturized base, I have the Chantecaille sheer glow rose primer jar, whatever the name is, and it is a beautiful product. It makes all the foundations look gorgeous on top. The problem is that after 15 min I already need to touch up, then I apply another layer of powder, then after another 30 min same...I start again to look oily and the skin starts to feel oily and tacky, the foundation starts to transfer on my phone, children :) etc. This happens all the time when I use more hydrating primers (the milk gripping one, elf gripping one, armani neo hydrating one). Can I do something about that? I really love the initial look, but after 30 min, it is starting to be problematic. And I am not oily. What I use: the ordinary buffet + copper peptides serum + khiels cream + beauty of joseon sunscreen. Maybe I need to wait more after I apply the primer and only after that apply foundation? Another problem is my under eye area, i am trying not to powder it much and put the concealer only close to innercorners where I have this blue purple area, but it is not a big deal. Still, my undereyes during the day start to get very, very dry. When I smile, you can see all my lines! Even if the rest of my face is oily, that area is dry. Can you help with some tips? Tia!
Needed: undereye application of concealer and setting for those of us who have lots of fine lines that appear under the eyes when we talk/smile. When I go apply light coverage no powder, it creases and disappears; when I set it with powder, it cracks.

Tia!
Love your videos they’re so informative!! Your personality shines through too.
PLEASEEE do a video on how to make a black water line stick if you know how to i always struggle with fall out!!!
Needed: undereye application of concealer and setting for those of us who have lots of fine lines that appear under the eyes when we talk/smile. When I go apply light coverage no powder, it creases and disappears; when I set it with powder, it cracks.
You look AMAZING. Inspiring. Sooo beautiful
This is sooooo awesome and helpful Alex! Many thanks! 💕
I love your voice, its so calming
‘Powder?’ ‘No- rude. Don’t interrupt me.’ That killed me Alex 😂
