Kyle is becoming the “State of Charge” host for DC fast chargers while Tom is the host for level 2 chargers. Surely they will collaborate vs compete.

I messaged Tom not too long ago asking him to talk about Level 2 chargers that would be good for hotels, air b&bs, and workplaces that want to charge for the electricity. He said he would sometime this year. Can't wait. We need millions of those.

@@fjalics I have asked Tom to review commercial L2 chargers for 2 years and he hasn’t done it. Only a few manufacturers make ones with direct billing to the user and managing multiple accounts with their software. Beware of software fees, transaction fees, and other expenses.

@@mikecarter2737 Icarus, wasn’t that from Greek mythology where an impetuous guy with wax wings flew too close to the sun?
No, Tom & Kyle are both very safe. They will hire professionals for all the wiring and get it inspected before using it.

This is totally amazing and totally cool. I'm watching with interest as Kyle ventures into DC Fast Charger reviews. It will be interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes in setting up a charging site.

As an old retired IT guy, I find this proposal an 'about time' project. Kyle is exactly the kind of geek who can promote and objectively review the products. Folks find an unbiased view with constructive criticism the best way to handle new technology. At this time, the general EV public needs to understand more about why this is coming along so slowly. I am old enough to know that people used to dispense gas from a 10 gallon glass jar that had a hose attached outside their country store!

  • @fjalics

This should be very interesting. Also, you and your buddies will all be able to test new vehicles on a bunch of chargers, and in various weather conditions. That's pretty awesome.

Considering the complete lack of fast charging in Fort Collins maybe you can get federal funding. Have you talked with anyone at the city utility about a partnership?

That’s a great idea. There’s just the logistical issue that Tom is in NY state and I believe in a small place where I doubt he has a place to put up DC chargers.

This is a fantastic project. Though there are large-scale charging networks with a lot of internal experience doing these kind of installs, it is the first-time installation experience which will be of most use for mass adoption. This matters for building owners who want to be able to install a few L3 chargers as a new offering for their existing properties but otherwise don't have any experience in the area.

Battery buffering should allow one to lower demand charges, since max loads on power net can be averaged instead of hitting directly

And this is a big deal for fast-chargers installed in remote locations with limited power supply - and here in Canada, we have a lot of places like that.

OOS experience installing and maintaining DC fast chargers will interesting to watch. Kyle taking on this initiative will help just about anyone involved or interested in DC fast charging, IMO.
My hope is that it would be possible for Kyle to expand the scope to allow installation of maybe four "swappable" DC fast chargers, instead of just one. This would allow 4 different units to be installed, and stay in use long enough to see what the maintenance issues are (~12-24 months). To defray the extra installation expense, perhaps funding from the local government, the university, or maybe wealthy OOS patrons could be obtained.

You should reach out to some residential apartments or condos for placement of some of the units. Then they can buy them out at the end of your coverage at a reduced price.

They should make dc home fast chargers! Where the charger has 20-30kw battery pack that chargers via solar/220 home level 2 charger. And you plug ur vehicle and get 30kw+220v 30-80amp that'll get you a solid 60% in 30 mins! That's the future!

Agree but this is what it would cost if they had to pay full price which they likely won’t so not much benefit for the other bidders. They may all come back with something much lower when their marketing departments see the idea.

Out of spec should become a CPO. Buy a vacant gas station or lot and work with the local power company to get a ton of high power to the site. And then put a bunch of different chargers on the property.

  • @ab-tf5fl

I think the eventual public chargers in the front parking lot should be paid, rather than free. Partly to offset the cost and deter abuse by people able to charge at home, but also to increase the education value of the videos by gaining insight into the revenue side of the DC charging business. For example, you can explore how sensitive customers are to price, whether per-minute vs. per-kWh pricing impacts charge times, the effect of idle fees on idling, and the willingness of people to shift their charging to off-peak hours to take advantage of cheaper energy prices. And also, the simple logistics of getting credit card readers set up and accepting payment, for example, what percent of revenue is lost to payment processing.
These are all areas that you can't explore in videos if the charging is free.

The more I think about this, I think the project needs to be done in phases and Francie would make a great project manager
I would have one team dig the trench, burry the conduit and re-pave, then get a second team to pad mount and bolt down charger to spec and the final team to wire-up and commission the charger

  • @Nunya-lz9ey
    @Nunya-lz9ey 8 місяців тому +1

Kyle you shouldn’t publicly provide quotes before you’ve gotten them all. It puts the first one at a huge disadvantage to get the deal which sucks for something this high profile.

I thought that was a mistake to mention the one quote as well without having the other two in yet. However, this was recorded a week or two ago, and the other two bids may be in by now and doesn't necessarily matter to the other two companies.

I think interrupting makes more sense with other interviews. Especially if it seems like the speaker is going too long on a topic.
