- adams first time changing a fuse board, first he did great secondly yes a locking off kit was used and i had the key, all precautions were taken to insure the installation was dead and remained dead until i had checked everything, show adam some love for a great first board change.

I know how hard it is to become a great electrician especially in the main learning stage, massive credit to how you teach, mentor and get the best out of your apprentice, helping him in a friendly way step by step. Always hated arrogant electricians who think they know it all, it’s always rewarding to work with people who share skills and help each other in the areas where they are strongest and are happy to teach those who want to learn from them. The way you treat your apprentice is far more impressive than any level of knowledge really good to see, that’s how great tradesmen are made👌🏻👍🏻

It's great to see the way we treat apprentices now, a little praise goes a long way. I served my time '93 to '97 and back then we were mostly treated like shit.

Love the way you treat your apprentice. Idiots still think it’s okay to treat apprentices like shit, which in my opinion is absolutely outdated.
I’ve seen multiple apprentices quit because the big beer bellied time served electrician makes a beeline for him and picks on him. There’s a line between banter and bullying and many of these Middle Ages sparks don’t know it.

4th year apprentice here.. never experienced anyone like yourself as a teacher, Adam is a lucky lucky apprentice, it's normally just "get this and do the paperwork" in first year. Great video. Great experience for him. 👍

Dear Nick. As of the telecom stuff, that is a VDSL2 based internet service, which utilizes the 0-17MHz range of the telephone line. If BT say there is too much noise on the line, the only source of that in the household are inductive loads, like the washing machine, dryer, and such: anything with a big enough motor. We also seen quite high noise coming from fluorescent lamps. A cooker or oven - although it pulls a lot of amps - is not generating much noise. One of the reason to use shielded cables for VDSL2 service is also this: you can keep the noise out at least around the house, as the old telephone network itself is not shielded. It is also true, that in most cases the noise is coming from other VDSL2 lines as a form of crosstalk, you cant do much about that.

Well done Adam, the quickest way to gain experience is to have a go yourself, I remember when I was a young lad doing electricians mates work for my dads friend loved every second of it but never panned out because I was too young to be insured by the company the Electrician worked for they told him he had to get rid of me :( wish I pursued it when I was younger but I didn't and I regret it - I am doing it now as a career change :D

Fairplay I wish I had a mentor like nick. The way I was spoken to and treated as an apprentice was disgraceful.
I wished I had this as an apprentice I only watched sparks install a ccu I've done it in college and I wired my dad's garage by myself it's not hard when you studied to be an electrician but doing it on a real job would of been cool I know what I'm doing and there are loads of good videos online, working for a good electrician as an apprentice makes him a good spark in the end, I was an apprentice for 1 year quit then became an improver now I'm qualified and waiting for covid 19 to go so I can do my testing course my aim is to work on my own as a sole trader and see how it goes.

Nice work. It's good to see tradesmen still use screwdrivers to fix accessories instead of battery drills where needed . Allows for fine adjustment.

Very nice job. Just one tip...while putting in the bus bar, tighten the terminal screws each end first so it's held in place and you don't have to hold it the entire time ;)

"too much noise on the circuit" my arse.. Earth leakage also will have nothing to do with it, they're Class II PSUs.
The customer should try not using a cheap router, mounted upside down, in a corner, with a massive cabinet in the way. Moving it to put the extension lead in is probably what 'fixed' things..
Wifi isn't magic, it can't just be vomited into a corner where you can't see it and expected to work properly. Especially if they're expecting it to work upstairs, that position is dreadful.
That said, job looks perfectly nice for his first go. Doesn't have to be perfect as long as it's safe and maintainable!
As I see it first I was thinking "WTF! How stupid people can be?". Then I renember, they are liveing in UK. 😨😲😢

I couldn't agree more about the positioning of that router. Archer C7 routers, apart from being butt-ugly, aren't bad as consumer routers go but you need to give them a chance!
Uncoil all that spare cable to the BT jack, clip it neatly in the corner of the wall and you can mount it 2m off the ground. It still won't be seen behind that cupboard thingy.
Stick that router on top of the cabinet and, hey presto - all will probably be okay. GHz won’t work being stuck in a corner 🙉
Just wanted to say how helpful this video was! I’ve literally just started helping an electrician and started my course but I’m finding the best way to learn as you say is experience and watching your videos! Will definitely be watching more!

I don't agree with BT and their assessment. If it's WiFi they're struggling with, then they need to mount that router the correct way up and spread the antennas a little. If it's losing sync, then I'd be looking at the router. The one they have there looks like an TP Link Archer. Not the greatest of routers, but with the correct settings they can get pretty stable.
I was always taught largest loads closest to the main switch whenever possible, the reason I was given is that when a large load like a 10.5KW shower kicks in, if the lighting circuit is nearer the main switch it can cause the lights to dim when there’s the initial current draw. Never challenged this, just accepted it as gospel because the guy that trained me was my electrical god 😂

I’d cut a larger hole with a jigsaw for rear entry , then use some car door strip as it’s so much better and stronger then grommet strip and fits more snug

Hey mate, I don't usually worry about sitting higher rated breakers next to one another. They're all rarely running at the same time anyway. I also like to have less single insulation wire/busbar carrying high current across the board. Have a great day.

I'm 35 and just managed to get one keep Trying mate put on Facebook if you have local page just ask if any electricians are looking to take anyone on as help there were a couple that replied so I rang the first and they took me on

I can remember when I was an apprentice working on new builds, first time wiring on my own the electrician just said I'm leaving this property to you to measure up and install the cables,1st fix using a plan and scale rule.
Best way is have a go yourself to learn( obviously not as a diyer)

nice vid great effort. Not sure I'm ready to give my apprentice a go at a db change as they haven't done anything with them at college on consumer units, not even opened one up and he's on year 2. Amazes me to be honest. Tried a couple of the Fusebox boards and yeah pretty impressed think I'll use them over Hager/Contactum. I did notice Neutral bars seem to be a bit loose on right hand side and there is only 1 connection for bonding.

Well Done Adam smart neat job, Nick your teaching him well keep up the great work, can you tell us the make and model of that power bank thats a great idea. I'm of the same school as you about fitting largest breakers down to the smallest breakers away from the main switch, only thing I can see that I would advise Adam would be to trim down those neutral fly leads a little makes the consumer unit much clearer and also safe
Re clumping cb's together, instead of 'some bloke on UA-cam said', ask the manufacturer, as they will presumably have all sorts of test data about their product(s).
The BEAMA 'CU connections technical guide' version of best practice is to strip the sheathing of tails back just a few millimetres from the basic insulation, and mark the conductor with the appropriate colour.
I have never heard that about the larger mcb's being next to the main switch or next to each other.
I was taught in college, always to put the largest load down to the smallest load.
Also I have been in the NIC since 96 and their guy has never made any comment about it, and I have had several different engineers over the years.
Maybe the people who mention that are the same ones that used to say you had to bond metal window frames 🙄.

I can remember the old imperial stranded cable gauge size 7,029 3,029, which I was told by an electrician when I was starting out .

Freezers can cause noise on routers that was in the instructions tell you not to have on same breaker and fridges due to the motor's for cooling
