My dad passed away on Monday. I used to tell him the things I’ve learned from your dark history episodes and we would go down rabbit holes trying to learn more info and get absolutely lost in it for hours at a time. You really do be bringing families together.

My mom and I do this! I was in foster care growing up and we never bonded she really does bring families together 💛by the way I’m sorry to hear about your dad
As a native Hawaiian, THANK YOU for shedding light on our problems here in Hawaii to your followers. Lots of mainlanders come here not knowing ANY history of Hawaii and disregard everything we say bc of their lack of prior knowledge of OUR history.
Iʻm half Hawaiian, live in Hawaiʻi and am terrorized on a regular basis. Most of the people in Honolulu are not Hawaiian and donʻt care about our culture at all. Except when Mauna Kea got international press and then they all put "we stand with mauna kea" stickers on their social media pictures.
My husband is Hapa Hoale, his mother’s side is/was there. He’s currently landlocked, but wants to go back next year. I’m learning the history, customs, and as time goes on, more and more recipes (his late and wonderful mother left her recipe books to the kids) and if we stay stateside, I want to open up a Hawaiian bakery and possibly a small specialty restaurant with foods that the other places don’t do. Though I’m told that Las Vegas is so occupied by Hawaiians that it’s called the 9th island. 🤷🏻♀️ What I’m saying is that if a person is going to travel to somewhere that different, they SHOULD learn about the place and their customs, culture, and respect the people. Sorry if I ramble, I’m on pain meds right now
I love that you covered this story, it’s truly heartbreaking to hear how Hawaiians lost their land! Please do a story on Puerto Rico, this same story is currently playing out Puerto Rico right now! Please bring awareness to this problem!! I love you Bailey!!
Or maybe Palestine since soon, at the rate they are being decimated or transformed into silent barely breathing sac of meat, there will be no direct witness left to recount the horrors perpetuated by the state of Israel , an ethnic cleansing per the UN and non government agencies’ multiple reports.. cleansing aided financially and supported by North America , and the "big 5 " of Europe. If you don’t know how and by who Palestine was taken from them the natives to create a Zionist state ,as a form of reparation for EUROPE’S Genocide, I encourage you to look it up. It’s even more mind blowing, since other countries made a coalition, and came came in the country and told the inhabitants : now half of your lands isn’t yours anymore. If you refuse we are ready for war. those people we are forcing on you have more legitimate rights to have this land than you, even if they left centuries ago… in the Talmud Israel is a promise land to the Jews, we are just following the books guys sorry, Kay bubye now, y’all play nice.
Queen Liliuokalani was locked in her own palace as prisoner.💔 She also (while being held captive) wrote the amazing, famous, and still sung today, song “Aloha ‘Oe” ❤️
Bailey, as a Hawaiian born & raised in the islands , mahalo nui loa for covering this… many of the US are ignorant to the illegal annexation of Hawai’i.. we were never meant to be apart of the US..

If my family and I were to visit Hawaii some day, do you have recommendations for where we can go to do some learning? Also, do you have recommendations on where to find out places we should not visit? I know there are sacred areas, and I do not want to offend anyone at all.
@@meltingpointcreations1457 as someone born and raised in Hawaii, but is not a Hawaiian herself, I think the main thing to understand is that it is your ‘kuleana’ or responsibility to learn Hawaiian culture before you plan your visit. It is not on the locals or kanaka maoli (meaning native Hawaiian) to teach you about a land that was stolen from them and their ancestors. Many native Hawaiians struggle to keep their land due to colonization. Native Hawaiians can’t even afford their own land. And it’s not about money for kanaka Maoli, the land or ‘āina(land and sea) holds a cultural history that is not taught to mainstream Americans. It’s about a deep connection to the land, spirits and ancestors. Hawaii’s economy as it stands today does rely on tourism (even tho kanaka maoli knew how to sustain themselves off of the land in the first place), but there is a way to travel correctly! Especially in a place as magical as Hawaii. But that magic does not belong you, it belongs to the Hawaiians who have always felt the spirit and taken care of THEIR home
@@laynie5904 thank you for this, I will remember. My kids are not old enough for big educational travel (and my finances aren’t mature enough either 😆😩) but I love to learn and so do they. So we’d love to visit places with major history and culture that we can learn and experience, I do want to ensure we go about it respectfully.
@@meltingpointcreations1457 it’s detrimental to vacation in Hawaii because the increase in visitors is raising housing prices and forcing native hawaiians into poverty and homelessness. It’s a large issue within the islands
We went to Maui last year and it makes me angry how this happened. The Hawaiians are being priced out of their own native lands. THEY are what makes HAWAII Hawaii! 😡😡😡
As a kanaka maoli ( indigenous native ) I appreciate seeing posts like these. Life here in hawaii is such a struggle because people move here over some fantasy that we live and play all year long when were just trying to survive and perpetuate what we have left that hasn’t already been taken. Mahalo. There is no hawaii without hawaiians
I think there should be laws in place that protect more of the land from over development. I think there are already stipulations on some places that you have to be native to buy that property. Which is brilliant!
I didn’t think she would really cover this since everyone wants to enjoy the beauty of our islands but don’t care to know the bloodshed behind how we got here 🙄 From a native thank you Bailey for this Dark history video ☺️
from a Kānaka Maoli/ Native Hawaiian women I thank you so much Bailey for sharing our dark history. 💕 my great grandmother was chained to her house by white soldiers and whipped for speaking Ōlelo Hawai’i. Other were tortured and killed and so many people don’t know this. It’s saddening me and it’s heartbreaking that so much stories are forgotten. the trauma our ancestor went thru is indescribable.
Same with my family, coming from the Dakota Mdewkanton. Our histories are much the same, as my grandmother was the first generation to be removed from her family and forced into Indian Schools. They were also beaten into submission. My grandmother couldn’t speak English, and was chained to a radiator heater in an attic for two days with no food or water for speaking her native language, when she was 6 years old! This was the common practice of acculturation and assimilation. It was either this, or genocide. We also should not be a part of the USA. This is colonization of the planet, and all tribal indigenous people and societies, with dependent, agricultural-urbanized, whitewashed, mainstream, status quo humans, and the domestication and farming of animals, that causes these people, who are totally dependent on this food system, to overpopulate, overthrow, and become the dominant paradigm, and the majority population. So, honestly, if you don’t support colonization, from a tribal-indigenous perspective, then you absolutely must boycott, and end all support of the animal agriculture industry worldwide effective immediately! Otherwise, you’re just acculturated, and assimilated, and are whitewashed, just like they are.
As a native Hawaiian thank you for covering our sovereign nation. People on the mainland think hawai’i can’t survive without tourism, well we can. The Hawaiian Palace had electricity before the White House and the people knew how to sustain themselves off the land without help of the outside world who brought infectious diseases and illnesses such as measles, chicken pox, polio and tuberculosis killed thousands of Kanaka Maoli. The natives have been displaced by the U.S government & Stanford DOLE, who banned our language, hula and culture. Now the U.S Navy is poisoning our water with jet fuel (Red Hill) and trying to build another telescope on scared land. Billionaires aka Jeff Bezos & Mark Zuckerburg r buy most of the land which raises housing. Zuckerberg bought most of the land in Kauai 🤯Once again the colonizing continues.. Hope ur followers gain knowledge from our culture and respect the aina while visiting. Mahalo
Its called CONQUEST and all people practice it. Or did native Hawaiians never have wars for land before we arrived? Everyone pretends like taking land is a European idea...Nope, we're just the best at it. If Hawaiians had our technology, they would have colonized us instead.
@@chance2413 yeah I think people forget every group has done this, with extreme prejudice. Usually only reason one group comes out on top is because they are more advanced and thus have the means. No one is innocent lol.
I feel like Bailey is a perfect example of how young white Americans can acknowledge how dark American history is without getting defensive. Everyone should learn the truth, then we can grow from there.
I've been thinking the same! There's all this fuss about what should be taught in schools out of fear of waning nationalism, when a realistic look in the mirror is what would actually help us solve our problems. It's weird that it's taking an entertaining UA-cam channel to do the job.
Just thought about the fact that different states are trying to erase certain dark parts of history and You have a podcast dedicated to Dark history. I’m here for it!
@@redwoodtrail Critical race theory is banned in several states, states are also trying to change or ban how racial issues and history are taught in schools.
@@kuunanimasitalo4578 critical race theory is not history about race lol it's a post modernist school of thought that tries to push the narrative that you must look at every aspect of your life through the lenses of race. I know I loved the Disney move and in Jr high I looked up what actually happened and now I can't watch the movie ...... just makes me so sad how it all ended for her
There is a movie called 'the new world' (I think) that is about Pocahontas and left me truly devastated after watching it. I didn't know the story before and had no idea it was so tragic for her. It's a great movie that I recommend to everybody.
YES! As a Kanaka Maoli, thank you so much for covering this! My family and I have been priced out of our home and have to live on the mainland now. My extended family are muti-generational households to be able to afford to live at home. Plus the mass amounts of temporary housing leaves us with EXTREMELY limited permanent housing, and that is only IF you can afford it.
That's what happened to my husband too. He's a native Hawaiian, his family had to leave Hawaii as a teen because they couldn't afford to live there anymore. It kills him that our kids won't get to grow up on the land they belong on. There's a huge Hawaiian population here in Washington that all had to leave for the same reason. People look at Hawaiis story as history but it's not, it's still happening.
@@whossoul Yes, the fight is still persisting and we still have traitors in our local government like Ige who continually choose to make decisions against the better living of the Kanaka and locals. I'm in Oregon, and all of us here have the same story unfortunately as well.

As someone who has grown up in Australia it confused me so much when I found out hawaii was apart of the usa, it always felt really out of place, it was always presented as like Americas private holiday resort and not an actual state
We are the red headed step child of the USA they talk about us in passing, use us for their needs but pretend we don’t exist. we didn’t wanna be adopted 🤣
I am Kanaka Maoli, born and raised on Moloka'i, but I've lived and traveled throughout Latin America and whenever people ask me where I'm from, I never say the US and always say, with Pride, "Hawai'i". 99% of the people here think that Hawai'i is still an independent state. When I tell them the truth about the act of war and illegal occupation, the Majority of Latinos are not surprised. "Así es Estados Unidos, siempre quiere más"
The history of Hawaiʻi is dark and still a very sensitive subject to natives. From a kānaka maoli, one of the most important things to remember when visiting Hawaiʻi is to just be respectful. Respect the land, the people, and the culture. If you’re self aware and appreciative, the locals will love you back hundredfold and treat you like family. They’re quick to love but quick to check you too 😂🤙🏼

@Al Stewart I personally would go visit museums dedicated to that sort of thing. I first learned about the history at a museum on Maui. The curators will likely be happy to answer any questions.
My heart breaks so deeply for the Native Hawaiian (hope I’m saying that correctly). Your people were very strong through soul, heart, strength, and courage! Especially the late Queen I love that she stuck by her people no matter what.
If your heart breaks for them (as it should) please pay attention to what is being done in and to the people of Puerto Rico. History is repeating itself. And no one seems to care
Bailey! This is why I love you. Trying to help us put our true history out there. Mahalo piha for doing this video AND for putting in the time to get accurate research. Your pronounciations aren’t totally off and you got the pronunciation of Liliu’okalani right which is a hard one for many. This video is much appreciated! Mahalo nui 💙💙💙
Fun fact: Queen Liliuokalanis while held prisoner in her own Palace and forced to sign her country away or suffer the death of her people wrote a diary that was found in 1993 hidden under the float boards of her Palace on Oahu that started the sovereign movement.
True - Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned in her own palace and forced to abdicate her throne, to save her people from blood shed. Her diaries have been published and are an EXCELLENT primary source of what was happening during the overthrow. “was found in 1993 hidden under the float boards of her palace on Oahu that started the sovereign movement.” Uuuh nooo.. it’s hard to know when “the movement” started because this belligerent, prolonged occupation has always come against resistance. The renaissance of 1993 came about because it was 100 years from the overthrow and Clinton signed the (bs) apology bill, leading to the (bs) Akaka bill. If you look it up, Liliu’s diaries were turned over to the Territory 4 yrs after her death, and were sitting in the State Archives. What I’ve learned about the HSA is there’s an allotted time that needs to pass before artifacts/articles can be released to or viewed by the general public

There’s so much that the US has done to the pacific islands and never have they acknowledged what they’ve done. Especially towards the Hawaiian islands and the Marshall Islands.
Maybe because the English aka British tried to take over the world for past how many centuries? Most of the continents are ruled by England or the Vatican aka Jesuits in one way or another. None have truly achieved freedom from the royals...just saying.
As someone of Hawaiian decent, it’s amazing how much information is coming to light online lately about Hawaiian history.👏🏼 Thank you for bringing this to light for others!
as a native Hawaiian, I’m so happy to see this video! thank you Bailey for spreading the truth of what happened to the kingdom. unlike other states where the history of that territory is taught, our public school system here completely omits this part of Hawaii’s history. beyond that, even the most “progressive” history textbooks only include a vague, three-sentence summary of the crimes that were committed against our people and government. if anyone would like further reading, my two favorite documents are the kū’ē petitions as well as another document that I can’t remember the name of (believed to be written by Joseph Nāwahī) which calls the insurgents “common pirates.” roast of the century.
As a native in Oklahoma, I just want to add that our history is extremely passed over as well. Oklahoma history is even a requirement, but they ignored all the colonialism. Oklahoma was supposed to be native land after the Trail of Tears, yet schools here still celebrate a “pioneer day” where kids dress as settlers and stake claim to land. This is why CRT is important, everything has been completely bleached. This video was extremely well done though and I learned so much about Hawaii. Probably my favorite video by Bailey.
I did a report on Queen Liliuokalani in high school and my history teacher thought I made her up. Didn't think she was real. Had to actually bring the book I read about her.
They basically killed queen Liliuokalani locking her in her palace because she didn’t want to sign Hawaii away. She was a smart woman and saw through them. I’m truly sorry what they did to Hawaiians.

I learned this in my school too in Eastern Washington. Small town school. It really concerns me how many American people didn't learn this in US history. I even remember my teacher saying we need to give back their islands.
@@everlastingluv361 Yep very concerning. Honestly I think if I wasn’t in AP History I would have never learned about it. A lot of schools only focus on the curriculum the state requires; unless you have a teacher who wants to cover as much as possible.
Hey, I also heard that, currently, the navy is dumping some kind of waste into Hawaiian water supply and natives have been protesting for them to leave because it’s basically poisoning them. I know I’m not explaining this well, but this is a big problem.
Hi! Actually what happened is that there’s a military owned and operated fuel tank that leaked into the water supply system & the federal government is sueing the state for trying to fix it. The school I’m at hasn’t had running water in 2 months which is even more awful considering we are still in a pandemic & the children cannot effectively wash their hands. If you’d like more info, look up Red Hill Hawaii and there will be much more!
Yes, it’s true. The U.S. Navy placed their fuel tanks right above a source of water. Now, the people are sick, displaced, and the US Navy, refuses to shut down their fuel tanks which are leaking into the public’s water. UNREAL!
I turned 5 in 1959. In first grade, I remember what a big deal it was that Hawaii became our 50th state, right behind Alaska. I have lived thru some interesting times, as all generations do. I couldn't have handled some of these awful truths as a child. As an adult, I feel a responsibility to the truth, no matter where it leads. Thank you for delivering it in such an entertaining fashion. It kept my attention!
I did my Bachelor’s thesis on how the annexation was a violation of the Kingdom of Hawai’i’s sovereignty and booooooii it took every ounce of my ability to put it in academic language. I went to Hawaii recently for my birthday and went to the Polynesian cultural center, and although I lived there as a kid, it was in that experience that I learned basically how Hawaii was colonized and stolen like well… all of America. As a black woman I definitely felt saddened by the history and now them practicing their culture as a tourist act/ attraction for the likely descendants of these colonizers. I also felt that natives receiving little back from their stolen land, again not a surprise. It definitely changed the mood of what we were suppose to experience as paradise.

Thank you Bailey!!! I made a comment a few Dark Histories ago for you to cover this. I didn’t think you’d cover it so soon so thank you! History books in other parts of the United States barely even cover this. Hawaiian culture is their religion that is shown in the form of dance, and the land is sacred. Very similar to the Native Americans and their culture. There are still many of those who perpetuate our culture everyday, all around the world spreading our stories through Hula. I cannot stress how important it is to recognize the dying of the Hawaiian race. Ni’ihau is the only island left with pure native Hawaiians, but a lot of them flee to Kaua’i. It saddens me how much damage the era of colonization did to so many Pacific and Caribbean islands; they were so vibrant and rich with culture just for it to be exploited. All for the sake of financial and personal gain, too. I can't help but wonder what islands like Hawa'i, Puerto Rico, Samoa, and the Marshall Islands would be like without such interference; no doubt they would be so much more different.

A couple days ago I went to Hawaii and began learning more about its history, so I started looking it up and went down this rabbit hole of how it came to be a state. I remember thinking to myself, “I hope Bailey covers this for dark history” AND THEN I SEE THIS AHDJDJFFFJFF THANK YOU!
Well since that “hope” came to fruition… can you please hope that the US finally ends its illegal occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom please 😬… I would love to be able to die not oppressed & illegally occupied by the US.
Because history is usually taught one sidedly. Even how we view Viking Norsemen, they were barbaric in the eyes of the English so they’re portrayed as barbarians even today, but when England did the same things a few hundred years later, they were “colonisers” 🙄
As a Canadian I never understood why American always debated the whole 49 or 50 states thing and I’m so glad you made this super informative video! Thank you Bailey and team!
I miss your Mystery and Makeup uploads I feel you don’t do them much anymore 😥…. With that being said I appreciate you bringing dark and often important yet forgotten history to light
For those of you wanting to learn more about this and how Hawai'i was taken by the U.S., look up the events surrounding the Great Māhele, the Reciprocity Treaty, the Bayonet Constitution, and the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani. Also Lorrin Thurston was a big villain in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. I work at a Hawaiian Immersion school on Oahu and it's something we teach in Hawaiian History every year. It eventually leads all the way to Pearl Harbor during World War II.

As someone who is part Hawaiian and lived there for most of my childhood/teens, I am excited to see you covering this since people on the mainland really have no idea and as far as I know they don’t cover any Hawaiian history in other states. I went to college in New England so whenever I brought up this topic in certain classes, people were always shocked that they never learned about it.
Oh wow I am blown away that someone from America took the time to care and tell it how it is. The sad part is we are still terrorized or driven off the island on a regular basis. No one believes me the extent to which we are abused. It is so evil here. Especially on O'ahu.
Just here to say how glad I am to see this issue get more and more coverage!!! And if visiting Hawaii, I highly recommend in addition to respecting the islands and people, try visiting Hawaiian heritage sites. At the very least the ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu is easily accessible and very inexpensive to tour, and a truly moving experience.
Considering Hawai’i is not PART of the US but rather illegally OCCUPIED by the US AND that it’s a war crime for an occupying power (in this case the US) to allow its citizens or any other foreigners to even set FOOT in a country it occupies… how about everyone just stay AWAY?!?! Yeah?!
I hope someone else reads this and spreads the word, but something almost identical to what happened to Hawai'i is happening in PUERTO RICO. Our corrupt government is controlled by an oversight board that is enabling American millionaires to buy up land tax free in an effort to make the cost of living for native citizens higher (impossible to pay) and push us out of our own islands. We are having mass strikes for better pay across all industries and we are fighting as hard as we can against them but we need all the help we can get. Please, if you feel for the plight of Hawai'i, consider Puerto Rico as a mirror image. We are slowly being eaten up by US interests and the word needs to spread so we can continue to fight for our HOME.
I feel for you, we cant afford a home here on Maui and my family has lived here for way over 10 generations....now only millionaires can buy homes and we are being pushed out. Another thing to remember, Puerto Ricans are not allowed to vote in the U.S presidential elections and do not have representation in congress. Despite the fact that both of these things influence life and the law in Puerto Rico tremendously (being that most federal laws apply to Puerto Rico), Puerto Ricans don’t have a say in the president or congress that is passing these laws. It’s awful to see and so disheartening.
@@puertoricanbookworm4650 Yes, exactly. The fact that we don't have the power to even influence what happens in our home makes it even more frustrating. Protests are happening all over the island, but we need help wherever we can get it. Tourism is the largest single source of private capital for Hawaii's economy. Facts are that without tourism the islands wouldn't survive economically.
@@courtneaylayne realistically, is any of that income going where it should be to the natives? No. So tourism being the largest source of private capital for Hawaii isn't benefiting Hawaii, so they could survive without tourism easily as theyre doing it now already.
After living on the island for 5 years, it's true many of the natives and locals have a huge distaste in tourism. Primarily because many tourist disrespect the land and rules especially at the beaches and parks. Many natives and locals often refuse to go to Waikiki due to the high capacity of tourism. I grew up in Hawaii for my early elementary years and something I found kinda cool was that the teachers would teach the history of the colonization and everything. It was always so bittersweet seeing the castle that once belonged to the royal family...
Went to Hawaii last year and learned about this while listening to the narrator on the road to Hanna; my family and I were absolutely shocked to hear about how the United States acquired Hawaii, Just like the Natives on the "Main Land" horrible history of how we came about, but then I learned about England's history and came to the conclusion that unfortunately there can nothing the indigenous people can do about it. It is all very sad, unfair and unjust. We never heard about this in school that's for sure! Thank you Bailey on teaching us all this dark history,.

@@wadegarret they actually do though, History will show that on a large scale they have a monopoly, also it’s not about who else has done it. It’s the fact it has happened repeatedly on a mass scale from the same type of people. Educated white men seeking power/control

Your effort in pronouncing the Hawaiian names correctly didn’t go unnoticed. I’ve been watching you for years and I know how you stumble but you took your time, and it means a lot.

I was so confused about it. This gives me clarity.
Honestly we destroyed so many ecosystems and it is still happening. We should quit doing that and give the countries to the rightful inhabitants.
And the Americas

there are still americans who believe the war of 1812 was a tie. so yeah a lot of the history learned there was a big lie.
Because history is usually taught one sidedly. Even how we view Viking Norsemen, they were barbaric in the eyes of the English so they’re portrayed as barbarians even today, but when England did the same things a few hundred years later, they were “colonisers” 🙄

I know how much it hurts to watch the home you grew up in become lost to outsiders who have zero respect for your land and culture. Stay strong gurl!!
The local and federal govt. aren't likely to actually do anything to truly fix what's going on this year, even less so for everything that has happened since 2017 with hurricane Maria. We are truly tired of this.
@@kawaikuailani7018 It's truly depressing to see so many of my loved ones and so many other people moving from the island in search of better opportunities, all because millionaires and the govt. are making it more difficult and more expensive to live here. We're losing our home to people who will never care about preserving its beauty, its traditions and its culture. I truly feel for Hawai'i and I'm terrified that my own country is and will be going through the same horrors.
