When done for dramatic effect, which is what Edge and Randy did, just barely kicking out of a finisher at 2 is great. Also, Edge and Orton really only hit about 5 finishers between the two of them. Edge hit an unprettier and a spear, Orton hit a rock bottom and an rko before ending things with the punt, which makes sense, because people don't kick out of that. The edge o matic, edgecator and the edgucation are all signatures, which isn't as big a deal if you kick out of in a main event match. It makes sense for Edge and Orton to be able to endure each others finishers, they are two of the strongest booked wrestlers in WWE's modern history. Plus, they told a story in the match seperate from the spots. Telling the story of Orton's methodical, carefully thought out gameplan and Edge overcoming the ringrust and fighting his worries about being back in the ring after 9 years away. Edge had already settled the grudge. He beat Orton unconscious in a last man standing match. Now this was a match between two veterans over the pride of who is the better wrestler. It makes sense they endure finishers here as well, because in story, Edge and Orton both were pulling out all the stops. They were fighting for pride. That's why it took more than just his regular finisher to put down Edge. It took the punt, which is Orton's crisis move. When he uses it, that's the end. They conveyed it all through expressions and some pleasently surprisingly well done commentary. Could they have toned down the finisher spamming a bit? Yeah, but it wasn'tanywhere near as egregiously offensive as when someone like supposed top guy and "best wrestler in the world" (🙄) Kenny Omega has a competitive match with a jobber nobody and the jobber nobody: Jimmy Whogivesashit, kicks out of the "top star"'s finisher. Kick out of finishers for storyline purposes when it makes sense. Not just to pop Dave Meltzer so he gives you more meaningless stars.
@@-BigMike- I know what you mean. Anytime I have the misfortune of stumbling onto a Young Bucks or Olivier match, or am subjucted to one of AEW's professional jesters like Stunt or Pockets, I end up watching a bunch of old NWA stuff just to cleanse my palatte and remind myself what wrestling really looks like. Guys like Flair, Steamboat and Race, men who understood how to keep their spots valuable and the importance of pacing a match so you don't burn out the crowd. And it sucks that it's like this, because it doesn't have to be. Orton himself proves that you can still get over the old fashioned way. He's never been flashy, his biggest spot is a running punt kick, but he's still one of the biggest stars in wrestling history. The punt is used sparingly and I don't think anyone has ever kicked out of it, so the crowd goes wild for it... well... when there is a crowd. A plain move like the punt kick gets better, more genuine reactions than any one of the Bucks or Omega's flips or finishers because people don't expect to see it and know that when they do, things have gotten very serious. FTR too. If you're convincing and you work smart, you don't need the trapeze act.
I like Ciampa more than Orton, but I have to side with Orton here: the super kick is overused. Also, I don't understand why people are calling Orton "boring". I like his in ring psychology, not everybody must be spectacular in the ring. Orton is very solid, and his wrestling is safe. Slowing it down isn't boring to me, every wrestler is different. What you want more? I don't like the trend we're heading in, where every wrestler who isn't basically doing spots all the time is called boring. Some wrestlers are also exaggerating it with their speed imo. I like to see the story telling back, with great structure.
@Mister Triple Crown True, true! This is why I respect Orton as a wrestler so much, even though I don't always agree with his actions from the past. But I can't deny that he's one of the best and most successful wrestlers, and that after all of those years he's still so important. He proved that he is consistently good enough - and that's something you can't say about many wrestlers in general.
@Mister Triple Crown - Speaking of Thesz and Rogers, I came across this the other day, and loved every minute of it!! ua-cam.com/video/cqIHV0m29FU/v-deo.html
@Mister Triple Crown Thank you so much, I will watch it! Gagne in general was always so fascinating to me. It's sad that I'm not older, I never was able to see his matches. But I always try to study the history with the territories. I know for example that Verne was responsible for AWA. He even wrestled during the 40's/50's already, right?
Super kick, sling blade, suicide dives CORRECTION! Multiple Suicide Dives! Canadian Destroyers in AEW. Multiple moves in a row, more flips, super this super that, 7 near fall kick outs, finisher - finisher - steal opponents finisher, near fall, low blow, small package, win.
I picked up Ernie Ladd a few times when he came to Chicago to work the amphitheater and the wisdom he gave me was "son it's all about the money if you don't get the money I'm not coming back"🤑
Jack Doomsday he also slap his opponents thigh. Can’t remember what spot it was, but in the infamous Ricochet vs Osprey match from NJPW a few years ago, Osprey did something like a step up knee strike in the corner, and Ricochet slapped Osprey’s thigh while taking the move lol.
@Stephen Joens Yes it is. If every spot is a high spot, then there are no high spots anymore, nothing is special, and eventually you'll get to the point where guys will have to kill themselves to get a reaction.
I'm going to go with Rhonda Rousey's theory: "If it's on Twitter, it's for *them* and if I have something to say to the people I work with, I'll *personally* talk to you." Also, the fact that Orton's *now* made it known he wants to go down to NXT to wrestle 1 fued. *Twitter is a work* 🤔🤨
Without getting too much into the thick of it, i think Orton's wife was referring to the fact that Ciampa was taking credit for all of the NXT talent busting their ass, while he himself was involved in a low quality squash match.
To jim’s point, I’ve been watching wrestling again consistently for about a year and have been wondering how these super kicks and what not sound so damn loud and I didn’t know how it was done until this exchange. 😂
Talking about high spots, dangerous innovations and Wrestlers constantly trying to one-up themselves in today's Wrestling; I keep thinking back to the "Royal Road" era of All Japan Pro-Wrestling from the early to late 1990's. An era where future legends like Kenta Kobashi, Toshiaki Kawada, Mitsuharu Misawa and Jun Akiyama (among many others greats) were inventing new and dangerous techniques (the Burning Hammer or Tiger Driver '91, for example) in the quest of creating the greatest match possible. While the matches from the royal road era helped solidify what many consider to the the golden era of Wrestling in Japan, the toll of these dangerous innovations shortened the careers of many Wrestlers that competed during the era. Two of the most prominent competitors that come to mind are Kenta Kobashi and Mitsuharu Misawa. Kobashi retired in his mid 40's from the damage he sustained during his time in All Japan and Misawa tragically died in the ring after receiving a backdrop to the neck and upper spine; the unfortunate result of years worth of taking similar bumps in and outside of the ring. You'd think the passing of a star of Misawa's caliber would be enough of a cautionary tale for other Wrestlers to re-think their movesets. But, the tragedies continue.
If NXT ever gets put in a Mixed Match Classic tournament (alongside Raw & SmackDown) then Tommaso Ciampa could do something with Shotzi Blackheart and their tag team name should be The Blackhearts as both of them are Blackhearts in different ways. Keith Lee teamng up with Xia Li needs to happen at some point as "Lee" and "Li" share the same pronoucation. (MLW, [a different promotion] once did a match where Austin Aries & Ace Austin wrestled each other and the MLW Commentary team (which was Tony Schiavone & Rich Bocchini) had to avoid saying "Austin" when talking about the wrestlers in the match. Match aired on August 17th 2019 of MLW Fusion but took place on July 25th 2019 at MLW Never Say Never) Getting back to topic, if Keith & Xia did get teamed up with each other then regardless of who of the two is legally in the ring you will have "Lee" always being legal in the ring.
Speaking of leg slap, I just had this thought just before im typing this. Drew Mcintyre is a champion. For me, a good one. He can still go. It's still early. He can talk back. Even his smile is dangerous. I do believe Drew can beat anybody by the look of it but he needs to change his finisher. Claymore is the embodiment of the idea of leg slapping. That's irony.
If WWE was in it's best ever creative period and its highest ever ratings, Ciampa still wouldn't get over. He's a cruiserweight pretending to be a tough guy.
I love what the NXT roster is doing, but Randy’s got a point, I can’t stand the contestant thigh slaps on every single strike, it’s annoying. @Stephen Joens Yeah I love multiple false finishes, speaking in a gruff voice and looking morose. Also I love being 50 pounds lighter than Orton and thinking my beard will make me look tough. A punch doesn't make MUCH of a sound so they'd stomp AS they punched and had the common sense to make it look like the stomp was them shifting their weight for higher impact on the "clubbing blow", but for 100s of years the sound of a CHOP was the sound of the chop....
1. Stomping is nowhere near as noticeable nor does it look unnatural to do compared to slapping yourself for no reason. 2. GOOD leg slapping is few and far between in modern wrestling. It’s so noticeable now and you don’t even have to look hard for it.

For some reason FTR doesn't like Ciampa but I think we need more like him in the business.. does anyone know he got tombstoned by the Undertaker in 2005 ?
Ciampa is right. Orton matches are straight up snoozefests. I'll never understand why people take sleeping pills when all they need to do is watch 5 minutes of a random Orton match. I can understand someone criticizing the high spot matches in NXT on occasion, but the last guy to do it is Mr.ZZZZZZZzzzzzz.
I hate all the leg slapping. It doesn't even make sense. If you kick a guy, your kickpad or the sole of your boot will muffle any sound. So the slapping is unnecessary and makes the blows feel phony. Just knee the guy in the fucking head. If you're good at giving it and the other guy is good at taking it, it'll look like you fucking killed him without the onomatopoeia. Rob Van Dam never slapped his leg. I didn't even realize that HBK slapped his leg on the superkick until a couple years ago. And the only reason I noticed it was because everyone was doing the leg slap and it exposed the move for me. I had been watching Shawn since the 90's and I never noticed that the entire time. It wasn't until everyone started doing it all the time that it became noticeable.
almightycinder and yes also said he doesn’t like the constant travelling and prefers it in NXT due to it being constantly held in full sail with the odd show elsewhere
It really surprises me that Cornette talks about there being no tough guys left in the wrestling business but doesn’t have more of a problem with two actual tough looking guys having a spat on the internet like a couple of 12 year olds.
Orton has a point. Tomato Chompa thinks Ortons matches are boring because Orton actually tells a story in the ring. Tomato is another indy guy who thinks he knows it all.
Randy Orton can be boring as hell, no one's denying that but when he puts in the work and when he wants to have a good match he can do it no problem. Every time there's a story that allows it his matches feel big. Both of his matches with Edge at Backlash and Mania felt big. Ciampa and all the other new guys just go through the motions. They don't wrestle, they do spots and when it's all set and done it's all one big clusterfuck. "You do a ddt, then I get up and do a ddt and a hurricanrana. Then you get up and slap your leg 50 times, I'll pretend to be dead from that then we do a false finish." That's every modern era match in a nutshell. None of them are actually matches, it's acrobats doing spots. Also when did this leg slapping start? When Michaels used to do it you barely noticed it. You noticed it only if you were paying close attention to it. The first time I noticed it was in 2008 I think. Nowadays it's like that's what they want you to pay attention to. I can't watch a single Adam Cole match because all he does is superkicks and he slaps himself so hard and so much I feel like his leg is gonna fall of.
Why would his name have to be mentioned Randy Orton said you guys did a great job he was not talking to No One pacifically it obviously sounds like the other guy took it the wrong way and was acting like a jerk that's honestly what it sounds like to anybody who likes telling the truth

No one seems to remember all the chinlock high spots that Orton used to do!?

Ricochet slaps his thighs when he does knife-edge chops....

There's also been accidents, injuries, and deaths from guys who biggest spot was a back body drop

Drew Mcintyre is a champion. For me, a good one. He can still go. It's still early. He can talk back. Even his smile is dangerous. I do believe Drew can beat anybody by the look of it but he needs to change his finisher. Claymore is the embodiment of the idea of leg slapping. That's irony.

they're kayfabe keepers? LOL while they are breaking kayfabe constantly and making a mockery of the sport constantly?
So silly. for 100 years, wrestlers have been stomping their feet every time they throw a punch. Now you calling out people on slapping their legs??? Come on Randy - still love both of ya'll
A punch doesn't make MUCH of a sound so they'd stomp AS they punched and had the common sense to make it look like the stomp was them shifting their weight for higher impact on the "clubbing blow", but for 100s of years the sound of a CHOP was the sound of the chop....
Yeah it's a hypocritical argument, but people have to find things to complain about in modern wrestling
1. Stomping is nowhere near as noticeable nor does it look unnatural to do compared to slapping yourself for no reason. 2. GOOD leg slapping is few and far between in modern wrestling. It’s so noticeable now and you don’t even have to look hard for it.
Ciampa was once a slow mo wrestler, can’t blame Randy Orton because it’s hard to take Ciampa seriously after you saw that.
