    I am reminded of this passage from Fahrenheit 451: “If you don't want a man unhappy politically, don't give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one. Better yet, give him none. Let him forget there is such a thing as war. If the government is inefficient, top-heavy, and tax-mad, better it be all those than that people worry over it. Peace, Montag. Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs or the names of state capitals or how much corn Iowa grew last year. Cram them full of noncombustible data, chock them so damned full of 'facts' they feel stuffed, but absolutely 'brilliant' with information. Then they'll feel they're thinking, they'll get a sense of motion without moving. And they'll be happy, because facts of that sort don't change.”

      @Every Single Average Day Yes and no. The puritanical Christian mindset, and the culture it engendered, was the thing Carlin railed against in his comedy. While it has some parallels to the CRT/ cancel culture we find ourselves fighting today, I think we face a much deadlier beast. Both ideologies claim a moral high ground, but puritan Christianity, at least the version that found itself in power during the 60's-90's, didn't seek to undermine the fundamentals our liberal society. It sought to keep certain minorities disenfranchised (which is clearly at odds with the morals of a liberal society, of course,) but it did not seek to destabilize or restructure society as a whole: ironically, they were convinced they were saving society from becoming destabilized.
      Today's radical leftists hate modern liberal society. You ask the true believers, and they think that meritocracy is racist, that certain people shouldn't be allowed to vote, and that there is no saving the American system. They want to replace society as we know it, not just preserve an idealized version of it.
      Us moderates had an easy time with the puritans: ultimately, they would never bring themselves to say that free speech is a bad thing, and that meant that enough people could, and did, eventually stand up and say "you're full of shit." It was only a matter of time. But the radical left despises your free speech, and will happily use their power to cancel you and shut down anyone who dares speak up. I just hope enough people are willing to stand up and say "you're full of shit" before its too late.

    • @mrbigglezworth42
      @mrbigglezworth42 2 роки тому +12

      @@johnyendrey5590 The modern radical however, in contrast to the puritanical Christian, is not held back by any semblance of morality. You're talking about the same group of people who easily equate speech to violence as such a justification for ACTUAL violence. These are people who are completely unfettered and will gladly set peoples houses (or as is often the case) their businesses on fire all while claiming they're in the right for doing it.
      How do you honestly fight back against an enemy who will gladly use total war tactics against you with no regard for collateral damage, even if that damage would effect them as well? Resort to the same tactics, and hope there's enough left over to rebuild? The problem with radicals is that no cost is too great for the cause, and we're seeing that now.

    I read a book called "Look Who's Back," which is about a certain dictator of Germany coming back to life in 2011 and becoming a celebrity because everyone thinks he's a good impersonator. Said dictator is the protagonist, as well as the narrator.
    The first review on Goodreads is a woman giving it a 1-star review, despite never reading the book, and shaming any library that holds it, anyone who requests it at the library, anyone who buys it, and anyone who gives it a positive review. I told her that if that dictator was alive today, he would agree with her; he would say that book is only fit for the pyre.

    Don't get fooled by how this happened in a "francophone school"; this cultural nihilism is purely a phenomenon of the anglosphere. The woke uprising is a cancer spreading from the US, the UK, English Canada, Australia, New Zealand. In Quebec we feel a renewed hatred from the rest of Canada, but we know it's not because we speak French. It's because we're still nationalists and we don't hate ourselves and apologize for existing (yet). And they repeated this in numerous different settings, the more people were in the vicinity, the less likely someone was to intervene. The more people are around, the more we tend to have a "eh, someone else will do it" mentality. I think that's the spine of why major cities are so left leaning, and more rural areas are right leaning. The less people you have around you, the more willing you are to do things yourself. Because nobody else is going to do it for you.

    There's an episode of the Waltons that became my favorite. But is still relevant now. Especially with the book burnings going on. John boy stops a book burning before it started. The books about to be burned was mein kampf and several German printed books. John boy grabs a book, hands it to one of the neighbors who is German and asks her to read it first in German then in English. The look of everyone's face of why does this feel familiar. Turns out that book, was a German print of the Bible. And the people gathered was appalled. Not because they were going to burn a Bible, but that they were going to do something stupid cause those German printed books had nothing to do with the Nazi regime. At the end of the episode John boy was given the books that were unclaimed including mein kampf to be preserved so people can debate.
