I'm a first-generation Cuban-American on my mother's side (polish on my father's) and I can't begin to describe how it makes my blood boil to listen to these pieces of human shit defend Cuba.
Che Guevara personally threw my grandfather in prison for having the audacity to try to fly out of the country instead of supporting the regime.
My aunt who is a dentist was forced at gunpoint to go to other countries to do surgeries she had absolutely no training for.
My grandmother didn't have the right to choose my own mother's name after she was born because some bureaucrat at the hospital felt like throwing their authority around over the plebs that day.
Cuban American families like my own send millions of dollars in food, medicine, and other supplies to Cuba, and still they live in squalor. My family likes to joke around saying a Cuban can make anything float but the fact of the matter is I have family that had to build rafts in secret, praying they wouldn't be found out because if they were they would likely be killed on the spot.
Thank you for talking about this situation and shining a light on these clowns. I'll be damned before I let them ruin America and turn it into a second Cuba.

Same here. They "intervened" in my grandfather's general store, which he busted his hump to afford, doing deliveries on a single gear bike up and down the hills of the Cuban countryside and saving up while living in a hut with dirt floors. He struggled to move up in life and he did. Then one day, they took it. They also took my family's farm in Pinar del Rio. By then, only my great grandparents and my granduncle were living there, yet they still were productive and self sufficient. They'd lived in the country for generations. All of a sudden, their farm was taken, and they were forced into some dystopian, Societ style apartment in Havana. They had no idea how to live in the city, away from nature, open fields, and their animals. That uncle, though he was middle aged by then, happened to be mentally challenged, and he suffered terribly being uprooted from the only life he had know. He was like a child, begging to go back to the farm. He had no way of understanding why he couldn't go back. He felt his parents were punishing him. Meanwhile, my family was "lucky" enough to escape into exile... ofc, only after having their lives, their belongings, and their loved ones stolen from them. And soon after being forced into a cramped space in a strange, urban environment, surrounded by strangers, my great grandparents passed away. We have no clue what that tyrannical state did with my helpless, simple yet innocent great uncle. It also boils my blood to go to university and be surrounded by people who create the environment where, if you don't zealously prop up their Marxist/Maoist fantasy bubble, you become a nonperson. If you tell them the experiences of our families, they already have their script to invalidate them, or to place the fault on the US. The best I've achieved through discourse on this topic is silence, disbelief. What is there to do? I remain in this world to fight from the inside. It seems like a losing battle, but then you see how the best defense is to sit back and let their side self destruct, while you remain respectful, logical, and gain credibility as a leader, or a role model for any centrist, open minded students and peers to model their behavior on. Be a safe haven for normal people to relate to in this wild world of confusion and anxiety. Yes people are flawed and chaotic, but after a while in the muck and the mud of that snake pit of ideas, they begin to gravitate to order, as a refreshing space of stability, simplicity, and clear, honest communication.

Heresy is like a tree, its roots lie in the darkness whilst its leaves wave in the sun and to those who suspect nought, it has an attractive and pleasing appearance. Truly, you can prune away its branches, or even cut the tree to the ground, but it will grow up again ever the stronger and ever more comely. Yet all awhile the root grows thick and black, gnawing at the bitter soil, drawing its nourishment from the darkness, and growing even greater and more deeply entrenched.
Such is the nature of heresy, and this is why it is so hard to destroy, for it must be eradicated leaf, branch, trunk and root. It must be exorcised utterly or it will return all the stronger, time and time again, until it is too great to destroy. Then we are doomed.

“Entirely absent from Cuba are rights many Americans take for granted: freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and the press; elections and voting; the right to bear arms; trial by jury; private ownership of property; and the freedom to travel and emigrate. Cubans are not free to leave their island prison. In 1994, for instance, seven thousand people died attempting to escape Communism’s last foothold in Latin America. Castro bans strikes and independent unions. . . . For a brief period, Castro rounded up homosexuals and placed them in reeducation camps. He quarantined AIDS sufferers for many years. . . . Before taking power, Castro promised to hold elections, but after the revolution he famously remarked, ‘Elections? What for?’ . . . Castro stands alone among heads of state in the Americas in banning Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.”

The ironic part about the whole Batista vs Castro thing is that Batista was a self-described progressive who legalized the Cuban Communist Party and even put some of them in his government. Castro on the other hand as pretty much everyone around him at the time attested to the fact that his biggest heroes during his formative years were Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler and Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera of the Falange. The Cuban Revolution started out focused on Cuban nationalist rhetoric and Castro only claimed he was a Communist after the Bay of Pigs Invasion showed the USA could be a problem that an ally in the Soviet Union could counter-balance. But remember people, paying lip service to Marx and Engels alone can catapult you to the other extreme side of the political spectrum regardless of whether or not you change how you govern the country. What seems to have been the deciding difference was that Batista sought to foster good relations with the United States while Castro was throughly Anti-American.

Also, while government intervention is a bad idea, I like that Floridians are literally getting in boat convoys to deliver supplies to Cuban protesters like it's the battle of dunkirk

I know a Cuban woman in Spain that tells stories about Cuba and how glad she is to be able to live in Spain.
Yeah... in Cuba you got a House, free healthcare, food and a guaranteed job... but with all that... You starve... You live in dirt, you have to keep farm animals inside your house or people will steal and eat them... you also mustn't walk alone due to gangs roaming around to rob people for the little they have.
She might not be rich in Spain... but even she says... her lifestyle is 500X better than in Cuba, and in Spain she can be considered lower class... plus she has free healthcare, free education and works...

I find it funny how the word gusano became a racial/political slur, not because it aims at someone but because is some 4kids levels of swearing, at least in Spanish, calling someone a worm can't be any more lame, like, is that really the best thing you can come up with? At least something like "traidores" would make more sense and wouldn't sound so lame.
I guess it sounds offensive when you don't know the language it comes from.

This reminds me of an idea I heard. "There's no such thing as the libertarian Left." In order to have that level of control over economic activity, which is ultimately how people choose to spend their time, there will inevitably be a similar level of control over all areas of life. Vice versa for the Fascists; their economies are socialist by necessity. The conclusion was that the so called Libertarian Left is only people who don't understand or haven't thought about this. I no longer disagree and I'd say at some level I realized this myself many years ago, and it's why I stopped considering myself on the Left. For the record, I don't consider myself Right, either.
