- This is Marillion's 2015 Record Store Day vinyl release, Grendel, originally from 1983.
Note: This is a picture disc, and I had to process it quite extensively to get rid of most of the background noise a picture disc makes.
CD: DRx - Not in database

the reading live version the best ever imo 👍👍

@@nickandronikou5416 I was in the crowd at the Reading Festival gig and it was bloody good.
I know its been said a thousand times before, but groups simple do not make songs as lyrically stunning as this now. Fish was so talented in his writing of songs. Glad i was part of it so many years ago!
IS, not was
Excelentes pupilos de Genesis !!!! Junto con Pendagron, IQ y Pallas. Excelente cuarteto !!!!!! Y me quedo con Marillon - Fish
Guitar solos are amazing. Steve Rothery you are not human!
I've always heard that Fish was really good for the brain. I finally understand.
I don't think he's from around here...
To me, FORGOTTEN SONS is one of the greatest, an always-up-to-date song with brilliant lyrics, indeed.
Listening to the new Marillion without Fish, is like watching an aquarium without any.
@@tilobley9407 Agreed
I have three words to describe Grendel - Eloquent, exquisite and EPIC.
Personnel
Fish - vocals
Steve Rothery - guitars
Mark Kelly - keyboards
Pete Trewavas - bass
Mick Pointer - drums Thank you, PROGRESSIVE VINYL, for posting it - from GELU BATIR, Romania, Ramnicu Valcea Town, march, 2022
the bass is the best
Fish was something else in his prime.Great storyteller.I put him up there with the greats of all time in terms of lyrics.I still love Marillion to this day.
FISH !!!!! Forever .....the real voice from Marillion ...
rene almeida I apologize for disagreeing with you; H brought this band back to life.
@@katemurphy1915 Fish was really good but just as Roger Waters with Pink Floyd the band was not moving ahead. H gave the band new life and a whole new direction. I personally think they are better with H.
@@normansgarden6271 maybe ,,,,but as a totally different band,,Fish's lyrics are way to personal to be believably song by others , nothing against ' H ' ( kinda pretentious , but it's your trip ) But he didn't live those songs, yeah they were at a crossroads musically as happens , different personalities growing , maturing ect, k move on, with Floyd yeah Waters left and nothing against Gilmour , brilliant musician, but they were not Floyd albums anymore ,good work but not floyd, I dont know if you have seen Marillion with Fish but live... H ,,,,LOL.....cannot do them, his stuff yeah excellent , so did he bring new life? yeah on CD not live, novice fans that may be fine, but us diemhard nut fans no,,,just liken Genseis isn't Genesis without Peter. Purple without Gillian nope, Rainbow without Dio nope, Yes without Andersan ,,maybe ,but changing singers especially ones with iconic personalities and voices 9 out 10 does not work , but hopefully we as people have grown to respect other people music tastes . the Sabbath Zeppelin stupid war I grew is long over and we all can just enjoy our own tastes and let others ,,,,,respect
Kate Murphy Since Steve Hogart, Marillion became dark and dull.
@@katemurphy1915 kidding me? ooooffff
Just fantastic how these guys get it together and produce, excellence 😊❤❤👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧wish they were still gigging 😢
You clearly don’t know your Marillion
They are still touring and making wonderful music. Can’t wait to see them in 2024 and beyond
amzing song, amazing vocal, amazing feelings
I love Pete's driving bass line.
Wonderful 🎉
Still my favourite Marillion track.
Mine too
In Switzerland, in the eighties, they were really famous, a big number! They toured often, and visited more often than Genesis, and the people loved their lyrics...better than Phil Collins even! And the music was so professional and progressive, so they put them often on radio stations with a lot air play! FISH became a huge name, many that didn't used to listen to prog rock, had to admit how good he and the band were...Grendel is another masterpiece of them, between a lot good early records, I still like to hear them after that long time...its true, good music don't rust or get dusty...still fresh and actually because of the good songwriting...i am a fan of Fish...he was the soul of the band🤩😂🎶🎸🎹🌟🌠🌟🎵😜✌️
Marillion "died" after Fish's exit imho - and his first 3 solo albums are also great.... Again IMHO
@@henrikfalkenfleth5321 Yes, unfortunately that is a fact. They lost the spirit, heart and the voice. Changed to pop rock that don't hurt anyone. Like they had no teeth, somehow. Compared to Tra la la rock bands still supportable, but if you loved Marillion, that's not enough. Fish was a poet, with a message. That's it! Prefer the classics, they work better for my taste. But that's just my meaning. Everyone's free to like it or not. 😉
@@powerplantplanetuniverse5945 I totaly agree with you - there's a disturbing LACK of bands with a "message" - and those that have - don't get airplay/sales..... imho
@@henrikfalkenfleth5321 Of course, they disturb the masses of silenced & muted. And they give us ideas & a Warnes what's going on. Unwanted questions, unwanted answers. If you look how Radiohead got attacked because of their songs, or Massive Attack. From parts of the extreme conservative bubble, it's no wonder!
You said it brother 👍
Brilliant band under rated
Excelent album to remember one of best rock bands in the 80's
This is not a song, this is something else
Love the bass lines, Pete Trewavas is awesome.
To były czasy!
I już nie wrócą....
Still got the original vinyl from 1982, still a great song!
still got the original picture discs all the way through to Clutching At Straws, including albums, singles and 12" singles, and original vinyls. Yes, they still get played!
Écoute après écoute aucune lassitude. Du grand art.
Musica di speranza.
La ascoltavo da piccolo e avvolte me la mettevano per addormentarmi.
✨
First heard this epic song on the album B'sides Themselves: nice to hear the different, original version . Thanks!
Masterpiece , one of my favourites
Класс , как обычно. Есть 2 LP, берегу как раритет.
Thank you - fantastic version that i have never heard befor3
I love this! Not as polished as the B'sides themselves version but with greater depth somehow. I love Marillion old and new but the Fish days will always stay with me. My younger brother and sister can recite almost all of Grendel because I played it so much AND so loud! This and Clutching probably got me through my teenage years
Simply Beautiful
Linda.A era Fish é foda,,,masterpiece..
I love Fish but the guitar work on this album is phenomenal.
This song takes almost 4 minutes to become fast 'n loud. Songs from nowadays, after 4 minutes, are already long over...
and forgotten.
the best band of the whole world
Ének és zene tökéletes összhangja nemcsak ezen az albumon!
Thanks again This sounds better than my picture disc does.
Is true "Marillion" 🎶🎼🎵🎸😎👊
Simplemente espectacular de lo mejor de la década
Wonderful !!!

Wow. Haven't heard this version before. Nice and raw, obviously an earlier version than the one on Bsides Themselves. Thanks for posting 👍
This is the Fair Deal Studios version, which is indeed an earlier version. I much prefer this one.

Best Prog Band ever. Steve Rothery best guitar player, i love him.
Steve Howe it is. Not Steve R.
Back in the day this song was shouted for at every single Marillion gig...and never played! Saw them at Nostell Priory in 1982. First on the stage with Jethro Tull headlining. By 1985 they were headlining at Castle Donington and Jethro Tull were way down the bill with T-shirts saying "we're in a field in Nottinghamshire but we're not telling anyone..." In between, lots of gigs all around, including Nottingham, Sheffield etc. etc. Then Fish left and I never saw them again. I did see Fish at Sheffield Crucible though. You can hear on this why they got rid of Mick Pointer.
But, if this actually was the Reading 1983 gig - I was there!
They didn’t quite headline Donington that was ZZ Top
Grendel, Supper's Ready!
Grendel vs Supper`s Ready = 1-0
@@roarstunes3133 No.
@@roarstunes3133 You should listen to Supper's Ready first than give scores. Ah, you're to young and musically uneducated, I see. Then please, take the opportunity to hold your pease forever rather than reveal your depest secret of which you may be not aware of.
@@DavidYorkshire It's a good song, but Supper's Ready is a piece of art, one of the best progressive rock compositions ever laid down.
@@roarstunes3133 lol
Saw them over fifty times before they'd signed to EMI , they used to wear matching outfits that looked like something from the Hobbit.
Fetching name for a Marillion fan!
IIRC, the stuff they wore on stage in the early days were cast offs from Madame Tussauds - according to the Marillion biography by Mick Wall.
No way, ha
Great remember from India special time in deli
First listen. That was really good!
Sin duda la más que mejor composición musical e interpretación de todos los tiempos del rock-prog.
Entiendo tu pasión por esta canción. La verdad, te falta escuchar mucho, pero mucho más, Rock Progresivo. Pero entiendo, eres un principiante.
This music makes me think at 'Van der Graaf Generator' with ths voive of Peter Hammill. They plaied most without guitar, so that's quite a difference.
which album by VdGG specifically? I've been wanting to get into them, but don't really know where to start. So far i've listened to Still Life though, which is pretty decent
@@gerben880 H to He is my favorite! The Least We Can Do Is Wave At Each Other is also great.
Van der Graaf Generator is much more harder to get into and it is not "easy" to ears with dissonant sounds but once there the one enjoys their music...
@@gerben880...try "H To He who am the only one"..
Alter all "A plague of lighthouse keepers" is one year prior to "Close to the Edge" and "Super`s Ready".
Despues de Pink Floyd Genesis y Yes...la mejor banda de rock progresivo.

Mucho mejores que Pink Floyd. Y que no se te olvide King Crimson.

this group should have been better known
Should BE better known. They are still putting out GREAT music. Have seen them a few times. Wish they would tour the states more often
@@normansgarden6271 Right you are. Thinking of OCEAN CLOUD to tell only ONE example of the past-Fish era...
They actually were quite popular here, even in the post-Fish era (but then I gradually lost interest).
They were actually quite successful in the UK - possibly in Europe too. Had a couple of singles that charted, which considering how out of vogue progressive rock was in the mid-80s was an achievement in itself. They lost popularity big-time when Fish walked out.
ИЗУМИТЕЛЬНО.........................................................................................
I love Marillion; this album is not genial, but one of many necessary steps to reach the genius of "Incomunicado", (and well... all 'Clutching Straws' album... - the last of Fish in Marillion group) ;)
Got it!
Awesome
Estos chapos son buenos !

Does 'Prog Rock' get any better than this? No!

👁 El ojo
Wonderful epic stuff! One of the most ambitious prog songs ever. Too bad it wasn't released in any Marillion's studio album but only on the «B'sides Themselves» compilation. The only flaw is that the song is too reminiscent of «Supper's Ready» by Genesis, particulary during its martial section (near 13 minutes).
Yeah, I expect the undying notion that Marillion is a Genesis clone comes from Grendel, and most specifically the martial section.
I disagree I think Marillion and Genesis are two totally different groups musically. They both have been my favorites for over 40 years.
Oh yes. I am not perpetuating this myth at all. They are two different bands and to be enjoyed on their separate terms, but ever since Grendel people have dismissed Marillion for being a Genesis clone, and as we were talking about, Grendel seems to be the cause of it.
Progressive Vinyl wow I know of no Genesis song that is anything like Grendel. I have been in this argument before on another UA-cam Marillion song.
@@michaelpugh4894 I love both bands and for me they are indeed very different. However, Marillion was obviously influenced by Genesis and there's nothing wrong with it (on the contrary). In «Grendel» specifically, I find the "martial section" at around 13:50 very similar to "Apocalypse in 9/8 (Co-Starring the Delicious Talents of Gabble Ratchet)" from «Supper's Ready». Other song that always reminds me of Genesis is «Script for a Jester's Tear» (a personal favourite), but only in the beggining. When Fish starts singing a capella "So here I am once more..." I always remember that 10 years early, in «Dancing With the Moonlit Knight» (also the first track from «Selling England by the Pound», as «Script» is) Gabriel started singing a capella "Can you tell me where my country lies..."
Lead singers have also things in common - they both are very charismatic (I'm talking about Gabriel and Fish, not Collins and Hogarth) with a sense of drama and theatre.
But overall they are very different - Genesis are much more folky and soft (although they could rock hard like in «The Knife» or «The Return of the Giant Hogweed»), Marillion sound darker and harder most of the times (although they could make beautiful ballads, like «Lavender» or «Sugar Mice»).
The good thing is we can enjoy both. The bad thing is they are not around anymore at least as they used to be.
I named my daughter Grendel... And My dog.
Marillion is fish.without him...just ordinary band
good,,
