Enjoy, and buy the artist's album!
I had never heard this album until today. Then, I listened to it three times.
One of the best Prog Albums from one of the best Prog Metal Bands.
I have to agree to an extent. Blackwater Park is superior but not by much.
This album grew on me like a bad fungus. Now its possibly top 5 Opeth, but honestly that is a moot point since every album is either masterpiece level or close. A "perfect" discography if there ever was one. Same with Cardiacs!

I'm trying to get into this music but I cant .
@@yousefal-otaibi150 Hi Joe! A lot of People find it very difficult to gain access to progressive rock/metal, especially if you're not into that kind of music and prefer more mainstream-oriented songs. I started listening to prog-rock in 2012 (I've been a metalhead since my youth actually!) when i came across King Crimson's In The Court of the Crimson King which is in my opinion one of the greatest if not THE greatest (prog rock) album of all time. So i kept listening to the whole album about 20 times until i finally fell in love with it. If you listen to Prog Rock (and espescially Crimso's Music) for the first time in your entire life, everything sounds so weird but if you keep trying to gain access to it, someday you will realize how great progressive music actually is. So i'd recommend listening trough some older prog rock albums (Foxtrot, Minstrel in the Gallery, Red, The Power and The Glory, Close to the Edge - just to name a few) AND earlier Opeth releases (Still Life, Blackwater Park) first, because their newer albums do sound VERY different (a LOT more prog-rock, no growls). But i can almost guarantee you, that the more you listen to those albums the more you fall in love with them and the more you appreciate the music. I just can't get enough of it!!!!
Fantastic Album by the way, really like their new style although i sometimes miss the deep growls and the changes between brutal metal and clean, soft guitars ;-)
SAC Studios: My Hero! ;-)
@@whydontyoujustwatchagiallo1639 thanks for the recommendations hailsatan. I'll try to listen to them, and hopefully obtain a better understanding of that specific genre of music!
@@yousefal-otaibi150 You're welcome, man. :-) Glad you're trying. Have a nice day
This may be the best mixed, produced and dynamically balanced albums I’ve ever heard.
Unlike most metal
@@ezemusic8140as someone who likes metal, you're not wrong
An authentic mature band album
@@ezemusic8140 YEah but sweetheart most metal isnt opeth :D so don't reduce Opeth to such a name :P
The best bands grow, mature and evolve. They explore the art of the possible. They push the boundaries. The Beatles did it. Led Zeppelin did it. Radiohead keep doing it. Opeth are doing it, and - in my own humble opinion - they just get more and more interesting.
Rush did it since day one, from Working Man they ended up to The Garden. Totally agree on your point. The greatest bands are able to do that. Its not just planning about it, but then giving it a proper shape and making it sound good. I reckon Operh are doing it and the latest releases are closer to my likes than the oldest ones. Ulver are doing it too.
Im not saying that it is bad, but I don't see this "evolve/mature" that you are taking about. I love Opeth; and love this one. But sorceress and In Cauda... meeh :/
@@luigibittencourt241 Well, it's all a matter of opinion - we all hear music differently. Evolution doesn't mean everyone likes what you're doing. Personally, I think Sorceress and Blackwater Park are their best albums. Yet they couldn't be more different, while still sounding completely Opeth to my ears.
Ulver changed so much they're unrecognizable from their early black metal years and that's a good thing. They got really experimental
Another great example would be King Gizzard. They somehow made just shy of 20 albums in a decade, and some of those are dedicated to genres such as...
- Thrash metal (Infest The Rat's Nest)
- Synthpop (Butterfly 3000)
- Garage rock (12 Bar Bruise)
- Jazz fusion (Quarters!)
- Progressive rock (Polygondwanaland)
Seriously, their work ethic is crazy.
I'm discovering Opeth here. And damn that's good music
Of the 4 post-Watershed albums, this has remained my favourite
as a long time fan ,heres my take. Opeth spent the first 20 yrs of their career cultivating a signature sound melding harsh death metal with prog and melody . so now after said 20 yrs ,they decide to try a new direction to stay fresh, relevant, and id say after 20+ yrs they can do whatever the hell they want. their melodic death prog worked! their 70s inspired prog rock works!
Relevant? Michael does whatever the fuck he want's. It's not about the audience, it's about what they enjoy the most.
@@Hyde_Lawrence True that. He couldn't care less about whiny fans.
I couldn't disagree more. I'm not a music masterpiece listener, but the last albums 2011+ sucks imo. Too much noice ... too little creative growl-vocals and heavy stuff. And that's just a sad development for the "heaviest music in the world", as Michael once put it he would create :( Yes, parts of their tracks are actually sounding very nice to my ear, but then it jumps right back into an alley of more crap.
I think people listening to their new stuff, forgets how their old shit sounded like?
@@jcruhrskov194 what's sad is a fan who abandons a band because they don't make the music they like anymore.
@@ricksuddarth7200 Imo they abandoned themselves to some 70s root I can't identify myself with. At least not when the music lack on growls and heavy n' dark riffs. Hey, there's a reason why I adored Opeth in the first place, right? It's ok to develop, but totally abandon their old music is beyond my understanding. They've become a hard rock band now and to be honest, I'm more a heavy-metal dude, so ... I think it speaks for itself that I miss the old Opeth more than ever. Not saying that there's not parts (especially the melodic ones) in the "new" Opeth that sounds cool, but it's a pity I only like a few parts here n' there compared to I pretty much liked their early days more :-) I hope all my writings makes sense. Not from an english speaking country :'D
The first opeth album I've ever listened to. The moment Faith in Others started, I was frozen in the middle of the street.
never listen to Opeth while crossing the street, very dangerous
I don't care for categorising what Opeth are, were, will be. I just allow it to immerse and envelope me and enjoy it for the amazing contribution to modern music.
After many times listeing to Faith In Others and returning once again I realize it's such a powerful song cause now it makes me cry so easily. I love it.
Oh yes, had the same yesterday listening with headphones in train. This Song is just perfection.
i dont care what anyone says , pale communion is my favourite album
How could I missed that? Great album in the spirit of 60’s/70’s Rock prog albums.
"Faith in Others" is a gem
Faith in others and Hours of Wealth both can cause me to tear up with overwhelming emotion, which is something I rarely have happen to me.
Faith in others always reminds me of my grandma who passed 3 years ago. Always brings tears in my eyes
I never get tired of this, it is perfection
Oh my god, the best record i heard in years...
So I stopped listening to Opeth around 2002-2003. It just happened despite me once being a huge fan, no particular reason.
Åkerfeldt's voice is like coming home, but the material is all new. I'm having a blast finding them all over again! It's a lot jazzier these days, which I don't mind. Almost 20 years has passed and I'm not 15 anymore, old ears can only handle so much :)
I'm getting vibes from the "Camel era" listening to this one.
I get elp vibes Here hehe..Greetings from germany :^)
Also, at 15, I would listen to whole albums in one sitting. Now, not so much.
I'm the exact same so good to have them back in my life.
Same. I was always waiting for another Blackwater Park and sort of stopped listening. But I love this new shit. I'm really happy that they came out the other side and finally found themselves.
The solution is to never waiting for something.
I have never been disappointed by this band. Opeth's still Opeth no matter the type of music they do because they have a signature in the composition and the interpretation.
I saw this concert, it was absolutely amazing. They played this in it's entirety.
I think this might be my favorite Opeth album since Watershed. So many great songs: Eternal Rains, Cusps, Moon, Faith in Others
I live in Australia, I've gone religiously to Opeth shows @ 9 now, since deliverance 2004, Cusp of eternity is one of the greatest live songs they play, including the classics
saw them live yesterday, damn they're amazing! the new drummer is killing it as well!
this was the set list:
01. Garden of Earthly Delights
02. Ghost Of Perdition
03. Hjärtat vet vad handen gör
04. Demon Of The Fall
05. The Leper Affinity
06. Reverie/Harlequin Forest
07. Nepenthe
08. Hope Leaves
09. The Devil’s Orchard
10. Sorceress
11. The Lotus Eater
12. Deliverance
The Lotus Eater 🍆🪣⚰
When I started yo listen this, EL&P came directly to my mind. Outstanding record.
Mikado is an incredible song writer. He sings and plays with real feeling. I’m glad I gave this album another listen.
Is that your endearing nickname for him?

She just wants to hop on his bologna pony. She doesn't truly appreciate Opeth.
Who the hell is Mikado?

Thanks a lot Opeth ; you keep Progressive Rock ALIVE.
Since its release, i felt this was just a B-side of Heritage. This one has grown on me. Its a master work.
I love every single album.

I've just now discovered this band....holy shit....im blown away
Update?
Moon Above, Sun Below to Elysian Woes is some of the most relaxing fifteen minutes of Opeth I've heard yet. Brilliant 👏
I just bought this cd yesterday and have only listened to about half of it. I think it's amazing!
Magnific! Incredible! Opeth, allways in the way of perfection.
I`ve heard all the albuns. If you just combined with Opeth, it is singular...
I went in the show in Brazil!
But, this album is perfect!
Influences adaptaded with mastery, songs unforgotten.
I´ve loved ever song.
Come back to Brazil!!!!!!!!
I´ll be there
This band is for all life!
Love yours Art!
This is perhaps Opeth at their finest hour 🤘
What a beautiful album❤❤
Siempre he amado a Opeth. Me enamoré de sus primeros trabajos y de su toque death metalero. Pero a decir verdad esta nueva etapa es igualmente buena.
I already have this album on CD!
i saw opeth live at house of blues in new orleans best nite of my life
Absolute masterpiece. Thanks for the upload
outstanding!!!
an entire album with no bad songs. all crescendo-ing into these emotional peaks. how many times can i watch this before youtube blocks me?
Best prog era Opeth album of all.
Prog death or prog rock era?
I prefer In Cauda Venenum

Damn that writing is just insane, well played sir(s)
I can't be the only one who hears a lot of Ghost Reveries in this album. (ambience wise)
yeah, especially at 52:09 one can hear the ghost of perdition theme
Great album!
semplicemente un capolavoro: FANTASTICO
Out of all the post Watershed releases, this one is the perfect porridge. 1. The tone of the writing is just right for being dark and vintage and its cohesive from song to song. 2. The mixing and mastering is the best out of all of them, its the most clear, least compressed sounding and yet very strong and bold. Just right. 3. The drum lines and guitar solos are probably the most complex and compatible with the sound than in any other recent album. Basically, I sat back and let them release these records all the way up to ICV, and then I sifted through them to compare and contrast what worked to me and what didn't work so much, and this album in more ways than any other just hits the right balance and drive for everything! This is why it's my favorite among the recent records. ICV comes in second. It's more similar to the sound of PC but it has a bit more dynamics to its writing and a great deal of emotion. Sorceress was alright but the tone in writing felt a bit too disjointed to me and there just sounded like something was off with the mixing/mastering - sounded way too compressed and noisy, not very clear. Heritage was great, but there was less confidence in the new sound in that album since it was them just dipping their toes into experimental waters. PC got ALL of these things Just Right.
AMEN. Could not agree more wholeheartedly
Well said.
@@BruceLeeKingoftheSewers I highly agree I just heard the modern albums so far only this and Heritage for the first time today. Heritage is a 7 for me while this is a strong 8 for sure. Cusp of Eternity alone is a masterpiece imo.
Fuck; this is great. I missed this album completely amidst my years of back injuries and surgeries..
Absolutely Fantastic. I do wonder what Mikaels like has been life
to produce such music
Thank you 🙏 again
i love this album
Can't pick a fave for this album it's too good. thanks for exploring genres. it's amazing for lack of a better word. some of the parts tho i might be able to pick a few parts that really smack me hard. lo love it.
What a masterpiece this is!!!!
When I listen to this release from Opeth it reminds me of early Dream Theater. I guess since they're both Progressive metal / rock bands that makes sense...
Holy Sh**! Since finding this 3 days ago I can't stop listening to this album. So much to love here. Do they have any other albums with this 60ish sound?
Yes, check out the album before this one, Heritage, and the albums after this one.
I think that in the future we will look back at Opeth's discography the same way we look back at the amazing heritage of a band like Pink Floyd.
I agree, I mean, they are masters in composition and first level musicianship, further, time will past, but their music will live.
@nicholasziemer3231In Cauda Venenum is their Division Bell. 1000x better than Division Bell, though.
Best Opeth album for me
such a perfect ending...
Man I still love this album since its release, I feel like I'm listening to a Grateful Dead song whenever I hear the intro to River LOL
I always think of spastic ink lol
sublime eternal rains wil come , que chingón toca opeth. saludos desde México , amamos el buen rock
You can look at this album two ways: Either Opeth completely abandoning their roots OR as a damn good prog rock album
They don't abandoning their roots ! Just the Death part !
Listen again to Apostle In Triumph for the exemple, or to the Album Damnation...
This music always been here. ;)
@@Morkeoth You've got a point. Their music is still heavy but it sounds very different while being surprisingly similar.
Opeth can do no wrong
best Opeth album in recent years imo

Woah. I took a couple years off listening to opeth and all this fusion. Prog +keys and someone either been taking vocal coaching or soul their soul to the devil. The ICV album is my favorite of mahavishnu-opeth king crimson new era by far. Who is the drummer these days? Bill bruford?ha ha ha

This album brings me nostalgia
diossssss me enamoraa !!!!
Hermosooo!!!
The fine wine called Opeth, it tastes good
This is a very great prog album with a lot of quality. Actually, it's the BEST OPETH ALBUM. A co-operation by modern music era geniouses Akerfeldt and Wilson resulted in a Prog Masterpiece !!! Thank God Porcupine Tree and Opeth exist and Progressive Rock is still ALIVE.
... Now Wilson has turned to shit. It's very sad :'/
@@ei6728 Yep, his last two albums are very soft/pop/electronic.. He has disappointed us a lot :(
@@ei6728 What a shame he gives a shite about standars and does whatever comes to his head. Oh wait, aren't we tired of fan service bands seeling their souls to the market and repeating the same album all over again?
@@arturoalmeida16 you have a point, a good example of what you're saying is Opeth, but I fear Wilson's real intention was to sell more (you can see less thought has been put into his new music and it's more produced, it has lost it's special touch IN MY OPINION, of course music taste can only be judged by the individual) idk I didn't talk to him but it's usually how it goes, for example the same happened with Genesis

Brilliant or what well done Opeth

This is the most experimental Opeth album I could find. Heritage was more piano and acustic, but this one has a lot of Jazz and rithms, very far from heavy stuff they used to do.
Like Italian symphonic progressive

I have a hard time deciding which is my favorite pure prog-Opeth album. The only album that I don't like is Heritage. Other than that it's even between this one, Sorceress and In Cauda Venenum.
Give one more chance for heritage, maybe is my favorite album from opeth. It took me a while to really appreciate it
Heritage slows to a crawl but that's what I enjoy Nepethne is the moment
While I don't hate it I don't necessarily like it it depends on how I feel when it comes to listening anything after Deliverance.
You mean anything after Watershed? If you don't like Ghost Reveries, you're on crack
