I must say I am a huge fan of your channel it seems there is not anything you can't fabricate and it is refreshing to be able to watch someone that shows you the right way to do things when UA-cam is flooded with so many hacks thanks
Thumbs up for the little girl helping her daddy at 3:50 min. That's so awesome seeing family in the picture. Kind of brings everything into perspective doesn't it?
Wouldn't the panel have been stronger if you would have alternated the weave so that they crossed with each layer? It may be this part did not need the additional strength but am I correct in thinking the alternate weave would be stronger? Thanks for sharing this, very valuable and your video was clear and HD is always a plus...;)
Very cool. I'm looking into making a hood and some doors for my Solstice. Probably a little big for the vacuum bag approach, but your video helped clear up quite a few things. Thanks for taking the time.
Thanx for showing us how easy it is to do this. Also thank you for taking the time to explain the breather cloth as that bit confused me but now makes sense. So many people wouldn't explain that. Stay Awesome :) :) :) :) :) :)
Shouldn't you have put a layer of the resin between the layers? (for the purpose of better resin penetration?) Also why not go give a margin of error by giving an extra cm of material on each edge that could be trimmed down after?
Thanks for the video, taking the time to explain the vacuum bagging process and how to do it right! Really appreciate your time and effort and putting this video up here!
I need to make something similar and I do want to vacuum the air out. Always thought I would need infusion resin which is thinner. But looks like regular resin applied with brush and later vacuuming will get good result. Thank you!
I dont even know what the hell this guy tried to do, copying original part trying to make it "better" with CF, ending into lighter part but floppy and unusable. Point of wasting carbon ?
Yea a yard of fiber is cheap but it takes a more then a yard to make something. I used 6 layers on the intake I made which was probably 4 yards plus the resin was $50 just for the intake. You also have cost in breather cloth, vac bag, and peal ply. Everything adds up fast.
i used 3 yards for 1 prerlude fender first layer 2x2 twill sec layer Uni Directional carbon last layer 2x2 twill 6oz 68 bucks for the fiber per fender 49 for resin.mold cost 200 for the mold set 109 for a 5 gallon bucket of resin bondo graphite and resin for gel coat 60 bucks 50 yard roll of chop strand mat . 317 for a set of 1500 dollar's fenders with the leftover supply's i made dash glove box and center console facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=344463578962135&set=a.344463565628803.80906.100001954886155&type=1&theater facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=265397690202058&set=a.265397020202125.64066.100001954886155&type=3&theater
A how to with no how to. Drop the music and how bout some voice over. What product are you using why are you putting the resin on like that, what temp is appropriate for doing this kind of work ?
Zach Plier .....I realize that. But this video is damn near two years old. If you're going to criticize a video, do it to a newer one. Not a two year old one.
do you not have eyes? I could easily form my own carbon fiber panel just by watching this, he showed every step, BUT THE VACUUMING... That legally blind stuff must suck.
Why didnt you use any kind of ply orientation? The 4 plys need to be at atleast a 0° 90° -45° 45° to make it strong. And the project was soft, cuz u didn't cure the resin under any heat.
I've carbon fiber wraped strut caps and shifter bezel on my charger. I'm thinking of tackling a cai tubing with a k@n filter. Still researching unsure on method for tubing and radius's. I could tig up aluminum and wrap it but I want the lightweight strength of solid carbon fiber.
TheFabForums.com Exactly, as if they couldnt figure out how to turn the sound down... Thank you for uploading, i appriciate the time it took to edit! :)

I've just had a flick through your videos & Yeh you've uploaded alot of genuine carbon parts but this "in the video" come on....... it looks like you've made some blumming good carbon parts this vid lets you down
+Mal Peacock Its not miss leading. The idea was to show the steps/layers involved in a vac bag layup. Which I did. The CF fabric I used was a genuine Carbon Fiber Fabric with a binding agent...designed to be used on non contoured shapes. When producing the video I didnt think the state of the fabric would get so many panties in a bunch, but I guess I was wrong. Whats crazy is I have yet to see one person that has criticized my video to actually have there own carbon fiber video youtube.
+The Fab Forums that's understandable to a point, regarding the carbon videos... yes I'd agree, however I know I've made parts only made, tested upon trial fitment & implemented for use... & never even considered recording the process (that was also to minimise ppl copying the idea of the part created regarding the carbon used here I've never seen nor heard of this hence why I've made the comment.. if it's a genuine carbon "my apology" I'm only used to the full on fabric which is annoying to work with. hence the points I've mentioned as even touching the sheet would cause issues as uknow.... Erm regarding the binding agent, I'd mention that in the description for ppl to understand
+The Fab Forums Im a composite boat builder, building race yachts from carbon fibre prepreg and resin infusion for many years, including americas cup yachts. That looks very weak like the resin needs a post cure to fully cure or its not mixed properly? also you didnt wet out layer 1 before layer 2 went down was that just because its a quick how to guide or you trying to soak extra resin up? also im more interested in is what weight was this cloth? 200gram? looks so flimsy. not knocking it all the steps were correct although the peel ply mentioned was actually holy plastic, peel ply is put down before hand to give a rough surface when removed that is easy to give a quick sand before secondary bonding if thats involved, obviously not in this case. nice cheap quick easy mould too +
Good effort, bad tutorial. It was nice of this guy to take his time and do the video, but he did it wrong, here's why: True carbon fiber composite is supposed to be stiff by nature, very stiff. It doesn't need "contours" to be stiff. If you want to make something that's stronger than cheap plastic and looks good, then this video is great for that. If you're trying to make proper CF composite, don't follow this video, look elsewhere.
Michael R. Zupcak you are right, you are not the only one. I have had several tell me what I did was wrong, although none of them have any videos on their own channel showing the "proper" way to make carbon fiber. Including you! My advise to you is make your own videos, get at least ONE subscriber and then you might have a little clout when it come to telling someone else they don't know what they are doing. Let me know when get your video up Mr. Cupcak and I will be sure to take notes.
TheFabForums.com I don't have to make my own carbon fiber to tell you yours is wrong. Just like I don't have to go run for congress if I want to criticize my local representative. Also, I've been getting Cupcaked since I was about 7.
What about......?..... the names I gave you are suppliers of Fiberglass, Carbon F, Kevlar, Resin materials... In their vast library of fiberglass and carbon fiber how to videos, you will see how it is done correctly...not the back yard way...the SFI way!
this video is too long, should of sped up the video or edit out more of the unnecessary. like I dont need to sit here for 2 minutes just seeing him spread mold release, let him do a few strokes then cut it to the next step. The info and content is good, which is why i clicked in the first place, but the delivery was just so boring.
I really enjoyed the video, I felt that the length of the entire video was appropriate given that this is an educational video. The viewer can really see how the material soaks up the resin and that you don't need so much. I was under the impression that the carbon needed to be soaked, glad I won't be buying 1 gallon of that stuff :). Could you suggest how to make a thin panel that won't flex as much. I am planning to use the panels for covering exposed framework on my racing simulator. Thank you for your time.
I have fiberglass repairs to make on a sailboat. Would this bag and vacuum method work on a large project like that and would the carbon fiber adhere to fiberglass? Would the repair be stronger than a regular fiberglass repair?
Look at videos for making pre-preg layups. I am in aviation and by not having enough saturation of the resin you'll have separation and soft spots. You can use plastic sheet under and pour resin over and then another plastic sheet then squeeze the resin from center outward . Do one sheet at a time. Then stack up on your shape.
+John Goodman Yeah I have seen some videos on prepreg layup before. I dont have any of the issues you mentioned, I am sure to saturate each layerwell and the vac back makes sure it is well bound.
Making this is always fun but takes exact measurements and some math, they made me learn this in my last semester of aviation helicopter building!😭 and that's how I became a welder hahaha! Still miss it sometimes though.. it's art!
nice tutorial video.... a quick question.. if you want to add bit more strength or I should say, firmer, what would be the best solution? add more carbon sheet layers?
There is a certain amount of layers you need and you have to orientate the fiber patter in many different directions for any real stiffness. There are charts you follow that detail this pretty well if you looking for something more structural. I have seen composites that rival the strength of aluminum at a fraction of the weight in aerospace structures.
Great example of how much better it is to used resin infusion. You can tell by the peel ply there will be microscopic voids however if its just for the look of carbon then this method is okay(very hard to see voids in carbon vs glass and basalt. Not to mention resin infusion limits toxins breathed in from the epoxy hardener.
Jonathan Moynihan This part would have turned out exactly the same if I would have used infusion. I try to show techniques that the average person can use and infusion is a little intimidating for most.
ok so let's say I have an older panel I built for a project. Now the project changed, and I need to modify the panel. Can I scuff the panel and add or change sections of carbon weave and re-resin the new areas to the original panel? and then re-bake?
Wow you youtube channel is awesome, liked and subscribed. I'd love if you could make more videos about forged carbon ... or how to DIY an entire new redesign dashboard for any car ...
your vid is so cool. but I would like to know if I was to use wire mesh as my form could I lay the fiberglass the same as you did and then put the vac on there? I was thinking to bag the hole thing and leave the wire in the middle.
you could do that. The wire mesh may make the part heavy though. A lot of people stretch fleece over a frame and coat with resin. Once the resin hardens they use that as a base for their carbon or glass.
Damn Kyle. Years later and folks still complaining on flimsy panels. I wonder how many people have true carbon fiber on their pieces. All of my sprint car bodies are absolutely flimsy until you start bolting them down. We used to use fiberglass panels these carbon panels are stronger and lighter. They also wiggle just like the panel you have in this video. I don't think people understand that there are several different levels of carbon fiber just like aluminum. You have hobbyist all the way to Aerospace. Prepreg with an autoclave does get you the absolute stuff. Even my carbon fiber racing seat that is SFI 38.1 is wet lay up and vacuum bagged at room temperature.
Im making a carbon fiber swith plate for a switch on my boat. What is best tool to use to cut out the opening for the switch? Should I precut it before wrapping or after?
Every day metal drill bit is fine after the part is made. Carbon has low sheer strength against the weave, so make sure it is supported with a block of wood behind when you drill.
So, I'm considering making a guitar body from carbon fiber. Could this technique be used to make a 1.5" block? Do you use the same techniques as fiberglass when cutting and routing carbon fiber?
sorry more questions, what carbon fiber sheet is that? I use 2x2 Twill 3k 200gsm, When i put it, the edge break parts. Your is very intact. Also, in the end did you use Release Film or Peel Ply? or they same?
The sheets I used in this video are not the standard carbon cloth you are using or what I normally use. I happen to have some of this stuff laying around, dont know what it is or where I got it. All of the my other projects I used standard cloth and have the same issues with the edges coming apart as you do.
so will i need the mold release and will space saving storage bags work since its a vacuum bag? if i make a mold out of sheet metal will that work instead of plastic?
I have a mold of my own for an RC boat hull, and I wanted to know if you could help me out. when I wax with mold release wax ( the stuff you use in this video) do i leave to dry and then put the base layer of resin on or do I wax on wax off for 4-6 times like its says on the can and put the first resin layer on after i take the last layer of wax off to allow for my part to come out? thank you and great videos!!
ok thanks. it parted!! but there are like a decent amount of air bubbles on the surface of the carbon. any tips on how to deal with them or patch them?
I also have those some times. You can buy a roller used to work out any air bubbles prior to bagging. If you have bubbles after, you can give it a lite sanding and re apply resin to fill any pin holes or bubbles.
Hey bro thank you so much for making this video!!! Very much appreciated!!! I'm just getting into the carbon fiber seen I'm a CNC machine operator 6 axis. I'm so into working and modifying cars. I really want to do what your doing with the carbon fiber.
Do you think I can skin the 2015 wrx front lip, side skirt, and rear spats in carbon fiber? I was thinking about buying 12in carbon fiber tape and trying it out, but I don't know how long it would hold up and how well it would turn out.
Did you apply a binding agent yourself or did you buy the fabric already with it? If you applied - what kind of agent and how you made it? Thanks forward!
thanks for the video. Is heating not part of a necessary process when drying? and does the sheet always conforms to the shape without the need to use patches? and what happens to the sims if you do have to patch it?
+motojc Heat always helps but is only really needed when using heat cure material like prepreg. The sheet will almost always conform to what ever you are making (the fabric used in this video was not a good sample) As long as the bonding is done under pressure it wont matter if you have seam and patches.
+motojc prepreg is carbon fiber fabric that is pre impregnated with resin. In order to be able to store the prepreg fabric with out fear of it setting up, the resin is desighned to cure with prolonged heat cycles. It is the best method but very pricey.
Where did you get this material with the binding agent? So it's kind of like prepreg but not prepregged? lol.. Is it compatible with typical epoxy resins or does it require a specific resin? Thanks a lot..
We do carbon fiber as well. Sometimes, we feel to deal with the surface to make a better finish is much more complicate than forming the shape, it needs patient and skills
YAY FLEXIBLE CARBON FIBER PANELS!!!!!!!!!! Someone fucked up on mixing up the hardener.
I must say I am a huge fan of your channel it seems there is not anything you can't fabricate and it is refreshing to be able to watch someone that shows you the right way to do things when UA-cam is flooded with so many hacks thanks

Carbon fiber looks awesome, I want whole my house made of it.

collosus simpson Thanks...Love when the kids hang out in the shop with me.

Thanks for sharing this, very valuable and your video was clear and HD is always a plus...;)
Well done, this video shows me the basics on how to do my first project.
No it doesn't, zero explanation of steps or materials used.
Good work! Hope I can also learn some day! I need a new hobby!
Very cool. I'm looking into making a hood and some doors for my Solstice. Probably a little big for the vacuum bag approach, but your video helped clear up quite a few things. Thanks for taking the time.
David Lively No problem.
Gotta love Twill weave!
Good basic vid....I used to do professional lay-up and vac bag and you did a good job.
The music sounds like several minutes of "mop mop hey you're a turkey."
yergaderga interesting
+Samuel Mason How on Earth did you get to that conclusion? Haha
I am now saying "mop mop hey you're a turkey" to the beat over and over again. hahaha thanks. 😩
+yergaderga hahahahahahahahhahahahah wtf soo oddly true
yergaderga Oml now I can't hear anything else
Thanx for showing us how easy it is to do this. Also thank you for taking the time to explain the breather cloth as that bit confused me but now makes sense. So many people wouldn't explain that. Stay Awesome :) :) :) :) :) :)
BEN HOWMAN Thanks or the feedback Ben
Your Welcome :)
Shouldn't you have put a layer of the resin between the layers? (for the purpose of better resin penetration?) Also why not go give a margin of error by giving an extra cm of material on each edge that could be trimmed down after?
also what is the cure time and set temperature for your resin?
I did put layers of resin between each layer. I usually do use excess fabric but for this part it wasn't needed.
on this project it took several hours to kick at room temperature. I currently use a resin that kicks in about an hours at 75-80 degrees
What is best carbon fiber for getting into tight places and contours ?????
Thanks for the video, taking the time to explain the vacuum bagging process and how to do it right! Really appreciate your time and effort and putting this video up here!
Chris White thanks for the feedback, glad I was able to help
You're putting the fibers in same direction on both layers.. and the abs bend could easily be cut and glued back at angle. Looks great tho.
I need to make something similar and I do want to vacuum the air out. Always thought I would need infusion resin which is thinner. But looks like regular resin applied with brush and later vacuuming will get good result. Thank you!
Looks nice, but seems the original part was stiffer.
That's what she said.
original prob had more layers to it
But was it lighter??
Of course the original part was stiffer! Look at the two thicknesses!
I dont even know what the hell this guy tried to do, copying original part trying to make it "better" with CF, ending into lighter part but floppy and unusable. Point of wasting carbon ?
This narration is spot on. I've never seen a tut where they explain everything so thoroughly. Should really get an award for writing.
Morgan Norman Glad you like it
I'm going to carbon fiber the crap out of ever thing now
+Jeff Wenz lol...thats awesome. That was my goal. We have a lot going on here for some inspiration: thefabforums.com/main/index.php?board=34.0
Wow!
Just discovered this video, and really digging the shirt.
I have been watching your channel for years and absolutely love it.
thanks man
Its just made of some ABS plastic
Do you leave any drying time in between layers?
no because I want all the layers to dry together under the compression of the vacuum bag
Ok thanks
By the way good video
Thanks...appreciate the feedback

Might have to make some carbon fiber glasses with this simple technique ! Well dam thank you !!
@Joni Papuli I have no idea. What makes you think its cheap to make?

I did, if you watch when I am cutting the fabric you will notice each layer is oriented different
Vary well, nice video BTW :-)
thanks
simple and in depth. thanks for the video
No problem...thanks for watching
I like your pink scissors (01:35)
thanks
The wife has the same pair
It is amazing that carbon is so strong used in supercars to make them but still so soft can be cut using a a pair of scissors 😍
yeah
i love vid man but it is a little slow

So where the fuck we get all this -.-
I have a resource section on thefabforums.com with all kinds of suppliers listed.
I don't if you laugh as hard as I do looking back at these old vids. A lot has changed.
hmmmm I've done quite alot of carbon moulding & I've never came across any carbon fibre sheets like that 1 piece, zero fibre you've used here
1st you'd never cut genuine sheets on top of any fibre sheets as the fine strands get everywhere & can screw any work up within a millisecond

then there's the vacuuming ok that was fine but Erm the soft very flexible sheet produced hmm very odd a single sheet of genuine carbon fibre with resin even without being vacuumed, produces a stiff not very flexible sheet unlike what's shown here...

i didnt know that could be possible to work carbon fiber in your home. Nice video

here in 2019 thinking dam bro you sure have come a long way!! keep on rising my brother!!
Thx for not explaining any of the resins you used, useless tutorial...
Great video. Real cool way of doing it. Thanks!
Great vid!
It looks pretty straight forward!
It really is. Especially if the parts you are trying to make are pretty flat
Thanks for the feedback. If the panel has some contours or ribs in it, it will make it very stiff. You can also put a layer of foam between layers.
I have fiberglass repairs to make on a sailboat. Would this bag and vacuum method work on a large project like that and would the carbon fiber adhere to fiberglass? Would the repair be stronger than a regular fiberglass repair?
What an Awesome video! Great Video tutorial on Carbon Fiber! Sweet finished Product!
thanks
love the tuff wheel II in the back
simple y practico...very good¡¡¡¡¡¡
thanks
Very informative video man thanks
no problem. thanks for watching
Coolest thing bout this, looks like your little girl is helping daddy.
Yea she is a helper for sure.
Go for it...it doesn't take long to get it figured out.
DAMM FUUUUUUUUUUU, you growing! I remember when you had just a few subscribers. Great work.
thanks
Nice & clean job.
thanks for the feedback
Look at videos for making pre-preg layups. I am in aviation and by not having enough saturation of the resin you'll have separation and soft spots. You can use plastic sheet under and pour resin over and then another plastic sheet then squeeze the resin from center outward . Do one sheet at a time. Then stack up on your shape.
+John Goodman Yeah I have seen some videos on prepreg layup before. I dont have any of the issues you mentioned, I am sure to saturate each layerwell and the vac back makes sure it is well bound.
Right on. Thanks for your video.
no problem
Making this is always fun but takes exact measurements and some math, they made me learn this in my last semester of aviation helicopter building!😭 and that's how I became a welder hahaha! Still miss it sometimes though.. it's art!
I'm really intrigued and might have to try and tackle some projects of my own.
nice tutorial video.... a quick question.. if you want to add bit more strength or I should say, firmer, what would be the best solution? add more carbon sheet layers?
If I would have just put some kind or rib or dimension in the part it would have been stiff. You can also put a thin layer of foam in between layers.
There is a certain amount of layers you need and you have to orientate the fiber patter in many different directions for any real stiffness. There are charts you follow that detail this pretty well if you looking for something more structural. I have seen composites that rival the strength of aluminum at a fraction of the weight in aerospace structures.
strength comes from adding dimension to the part

WOW that was AMAZING .....Can you do that without the vacuum pump ?
+Mark Cam yeah
What is the stuff at the core? Is it light? If not what would you recommend for core material that is feather light? It is for r.c. aircraft.
Great videos, you make some cool stuff
Thanks...I really appreciate the feedback.
Good video makes me want to try it.!
+Matt Feldhouse thanks
Even my carbon fiber racing seat that is SFI 38.1 is wet lay up and vacuum bagged at room temperature.
lol...yeah
Nice result.
thanks...I wish I would have put some ribs in for rigidity.
What’s the plastic film on top of the carbon fibre? Like the one that allows you to separate the top and fibre
So, I'm considering making a guitar body from carbon fiber. Could this technique be used to make a 1.5" block? Do you use the same techniques as fiberglass when cutting and routing carbon fiber?
yeah it is very similar
pretty cool man, thanks for the vid.
thanks I appreciate the feedback
sorry more questions, what carbon fiber sheet is that?
+budget_ build yes yes and yes
I have a mold of my own for an RC boat hull, and I wanted to know if you could help me out. when I wax with mold release wax ( the stuff you use in this video) do i leave to dry and then put the base layer of resin on or do I wax on wax off for 4-6 times like its says on the can and put the first resin layer on after i take the last layer of wax off to allow for my part to come out? thank you and great videos!!
i would wax on wax off and then spray a thin layer of PVA before putting down any resin or fabric.
ok thanks. it parted!! but there are like a decent amount of air bubbles on the surface of the carbon. any tips on how to deal with them or patch them?
I also have those some times. You can buy a roller used to work out any air bubbles prior to bagging. If you have bubbles after, you can give it a lite sanding and re apply resin to fill any pin holes or bubbles.
Hey bro thank you so much for making this video!!! Very much appreciated!!! I'm just getting into the carbon fiber seen I'm a CNC machine operator 6 axis. I'm so into working and modifying cars. I really want to do what your doing with the carbon fiber.
cool
Do you think I can skin the 2015 wrx front lip, side skirt, and rear spats in carbon fiber? I was thinking about buying 12in carbon fiber tape and trying it out, but I don't know how long it would hold up and how well it would turn out.
+Krishan Govin if you just want to skin it I would go with the 3m carbon fiber wrap
Hello,
I just wanted to ask, how thick is the carbon fiber cloth that you used in this video? Inches or centimeters is fine!
X BlackReaper I am not sure. It was very thin...only as thick as several sheets of paper.
does all of the vacuum bag stuff come in a kit? I think this would be really cool to do. Good video
Not from the place I get it.
Did you apply a binding agent yourself or did you buy the fabric already with it? If you applied - what kind of agent and how you made it? Thanks forward!
+Петр Кравцов It was already like that. Other than the fact that it held the fabric together it wasnt a good thing to have.
The Fab Forums thanx! Is there any other way to capture the texture?
thanks for the video. Is heating not part of a necessary process when drying? and does the sheet always conforms to the shape without the need to use patches? and what happens to the sims if you do have to patch it?
+motojc Heat always helps but is only really needed when using heat cure material like prepreg. The sheet will almost always conform to what ever you are making (the fabric used in this video was not a good sample) As long as the bonding is done under pressure it wont matter if you have seam and patches.
thanks. So what is Prepreg and how is it different than the one you are showing?
+motojc prepreg is carbon fiber fabric that is pre impregnated with resin. In order to be able to store the prepreg fabric with out fear of it setting up, the resin is desighned to cure with prolonged heat cycles. It is the best method but very pricey.
Hi, nice video. The black glossy sheet you are bending, can you tell me what material it is? I'm looking for something like this :) Thanks
Its just a piece of ABS plastic
Where did you get this material with the binding agent? So it's kind of like prepreg but not prepregged? lol.. Is it compatible with typical epoxy resins or does it require a specific resin? Thanks a lot..
+Cory Day W I aquired some through a vendor of mine. I dont like it. Its not conformable at all and only good for flat surfaces.
Its just a hobby...I like creating things
Thanks for posting
no problem...glad I could help
We do carbon fiber as well. Sometimes, we feel to deal with the surface to make a better finish is much more complicate than forming the shape, it needs patient and skills
Yes I agree
