That's crazy because there are _multiple portions of the song_ that are themselves classic sounds. Like, the string/synth part that becomes more prominent at the end playing under the horns...
People thought Bobby was a soulful black singer. See how color doesn’t matter at all. If God made flowers one color it would be boring. So he created us all different colors. No two alike
I’m a 65-year old white woman. I had been listening to Bobby Caldwell for years. Hubby surprised me with tickets to a show; when he walked out on stage I said, “He’s white?” He was even better live than in recordings. The record company was trying to keep people from finding out that he was white so they kept him off album covers. It fooled lots of us.
The recording company made him hide purposely. This was the late 70s. The reason was that they didnt want to offend or lose their black audience or record sales.
Funny how we listened to so many genres in the 60's, 70's, and 80's (although I didn't like disco back then). But young people today only seem to listen to rap/hip hop, pop, or country. Why is that?
I don't disagree with the first part of your comment. I have point of contention with the second part. I'm 23 years old and grew up with genre's from different era's and from my own and I know for a fact I'm not the only one either.
I requested this on your Boz Scaggs reaction! The look on your face!! I was sure that you heard this song. People that didn't know who sang this song always thought it was a black man. Reactions are priceless!
I don't know if you've done Steely Dan, but there's another intersection of jazz and funk, and even some sampling. They have so many songs in different styles but the first song that comes to mind like this one is Black Cow. Edit: "Peg" would be another good place to start.
Omg, BP's face when he walks out. That opening shot recreated his album cover he did on purpose knowing otherwise R&B radio stations wouldn't play him. Some fans of color on tour had no idea till he walked on stage in concert.
@@LibraALLWoman LOL! In my house, this is categorized as a Yacht Rock favorite and always will be. What you do in your house is all your business... and I couldn't care less.
And he is playing almost all the instruments that they mixed here. He looks like an Oakie. But he was from FL. This was the late 70's, 80's black BBQ music! Played at every family get-together.
White Irishman here. Love your reactions. Also love all of the other Black reactors that are surprised Bobby Caldwell is White. Bobby coming out of the dark shadow in the songs beginning is the surprise factor. Think the video is as great as the song. Good Job! Rob from Florida
OH. MY. DAYS. I'm 55 y/o and I grew up hearing this song on the radio and stuff but until today, I thought it was a black soul brother singing it. 🤯🤯 Thanks for showing me the error of my thinking 😂 🤘Rock on, Kelly 🤘
Always a good vibe. As for sampling, I still stand on the premise that if you sample a song you should have to give credit to those writers or singers also when the song is labeled
Bro this was banging back in the fall of 1978, all of us teens back in high school at that time thought it was a black person singing this. We had no way of knowing because all we had back then was the radio..but we found out as the song became popular and they started showing him on certain TV shows.😊❤
Keep in mind this song was produced in September of 1978. Not sure what year the video was actually made, but videos were being made by at least 1980 or before back then. So there was no MTV or BET yet or place to really play videos other than maybe Soul Train, and I don't recall them playing that many either. I think these videos were more promotional than anything. Bobby's record label really hid that we was actually white for a while. The silhouette look was more to surprise everyone at the time I believe. And it's surprised you and pretty much every reviewer that have seen it. I know it surprised the hell out of me too
Bobby Caldwell “Come Rain or Come Shine” 🔥🔥👍 Sinatra-esque That album was a favorite of mine and my husband’s for many years. Come home from a long day/week at the office, pour some gin and sparkling water and squeeze some lime, put on Bobby Caldwell, make a salad and cook up some shrimp… 😊😊😊🎉🎉
I'm honestly commenting before I watch this because I know what everyone says the first time seeing this. YEP I WAS RIGHT!! 100% agree with you about the video and the song but it adds humor to the surprise of the Easter egg as you gradually see his face in the video. AGR otraves amigo! 🤙😎
This is my favourite version below. He's singing on the BET awards show in his latter years... and you can just feel the love and admiration in the audience. I never tire of watching this. Bobby C. is the man. Blue-eyed soul. And the swagger... when he walked on stage! lol Love it. ua-cam.com/video/6jLy0bVuRyg/v-deo.html
Never saw the video until like 5 years ago though I was young when this came out. Shocked he was white too! Wasn’t shocked with BeeGees because I grew up watching them. Simply Red guy I was also shocked when I saw him the first time. And then there’s Rick Astley! Hahahaha. Music don’t care what color you are.
believe it or not there was a time when it might have been months before we learned what a band/singer looked like... kinda allowed us to focus on the sounds
As an oldie we grew up years before even FM so had no clue to the singers and what they looked like . Many studios didn’t put them on the album covers so it didn’t hurt sales .
The term you seek to describe it is FUSION. Late 70s / Early 80s jazz fusion. Kind of the next step after 70s Acid Jazz. You're talking about the anchor for half of hip-hop right there. And I know that matters to you. Check out "Remind Me" by PATRICE RUSHEN.
You can almost be 100% certain if there is actually a great piece of musicality or instrumentation in a rap song, it is absolutely sampled. It makes me sad that younger people think another artist wrote these masterpieces and know nothing of the contributions the artists of yesterday made to the performers of today.
To be fair basically everyone I know that listens to rap knows what a sample is and generally assumed that it came from somewhere else even if we didn't know who
They put him in the dark to enhance the shock value when he emerges. He plays all the main instruments and he wrote that damn song! That poor video was made in the 70’s, btw.
Many rappers showed respect to Bobby when he passed away. Many rappers sampled his music: Biggie; Tupac, Common, Chance The Rapper, Lil Nas X, Kendrick Lamar, Kool G Rap......
Please react to Linda Ronstadt’s live performance of “Down So Low” from Germany in 1976. It will take your breath away. You know you love her. 💐🌸✌️ I must admit I have heard this song by Bobby Caldwell many many times and I thought this was a black man singing 🤷🏻♀️ Hats off to blue eyed soul. 😁
Didn't see a comment about this so here we go! Bobby Caldwell was told to use the silhouetted shot of him on the park bench for the album cover, because they knew that black people would LOVE this music but they likely wouldn't buy it if they saw a white man on the cover. They knew what the majority of his fanbase would be and they made sure it got out to them.
Opening the video with him in the shadows was done purposely. The purpose was because most did not know what he looked like. When he moves into the light, it was an element of surprise. Oh my! (My response from that era)
Blue-eyed Soul right there ❤
3:14 we all know why we came here 😂😂😂
Him and Boz Skaggs have that jazzy soulful funk thing working 🤗❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
*Obi-Wan voice* Boz Scaggs. Now that is a name that I've not heard in a long time. ❤
OHH YESS!
The best reaction to this song was Leo / Mr. VIdeo. He actually called his mom on speakerphone to ask her if Bobby was really white. It was hilarious.
Hella Funny✊🏼
I remember that! Love Leo , I miss his music reactions
@@estills4768 there is plenty to watch✊🏻
I remember that! 🤣
Ha! I remember that.
Rumor is that he put down all of the tracks for this song. Bass, drums, organ, guitar, trumpet, trombone and the percussion.
That's crazy because there are _multiple portions of the song_ that are themselves classic sounds. Like, the string/synth part that becomes more prominent at the end playing under the horns...
Not a rumor at all.
Not to mention he produced it and mastered it
@@Sabbathguy holy hell. What a musician!
Didn’t know that! Love all you people out here that know even more than all my music trivia! ❤
This is the best kept secret in the black community for the last 45 years
Bobby was fairly well known in Canada

I loved this song, I really believe the 70s and 80s had the best of every genre
Ya but this waz them 70s
Agree 💯
Without a doubt. We were blessed to have grown up in the ABSOLUTE best musical era there will EVER be. ✨️😊💛
Someday we will all realize that we all have more in common than we think, lots of people of all colors have soul.
This song is on every playlist for every cookout and local summer in the park concerts.😊

This might be THE best reaction I've EVER seen to the "Bobby Caldwell is white" reveal. The face is just priceless
Sampling is the foundation of Hip-Hop music. The younger generation is clueless about its origins because they don't listen to other genres of music.
My sentiments, exactly.
Say it again louder for the generations in the back🎉😂
