  • This video is focused on the basics of Hospital Pharmacy (The clinical study of dispensing the appropriate medications for a specific problem) for patients with Acquired Brain Injury. In this video we will discuss the principles of prescribing and dispensing the specific classes of medications for patients with Acquired Brain Injury.
This is a general video which describes the classes of medications as this is meant as an overview and introduction for families to help them understand what medications their survivor received or will receive in the pre-hospitsl, hospital (Trauma Bay, OR, Neuro ICU, Stepdown Unit, Med-Surg Floor) and Rehabilitation Hospital.
We will follow up in other videos about specific classes and the medications in other videos and home medications at a later date.
Hopefully you will find this video helpful.

We will have a later episode in this series discussing medication that is prescribed long term…such as anti-depressants and anti-convulsants for pain modulation…but this doesn’t usually happen initially, because they don’t know if it will be necessary until later. Since we are discussing pharmacy and pharmacology in this series, it’s why we didn’t touch on lowering temperature…we did talk about it in the essentials series (2nd episode related to TBI) and the Hypoxic - Ischemic Encephalopathy episode. We will also talk about it when we discuss the ICU separately.
