Pediatric Essentials Of Acquired Brain Injury: Traumatic Brain Injury - Ep 1 (Mechanisms of Injury).
In this episode we discuss the mechanisms behind pediatric traumatic brain injury and the long term effects that traumatic brain has on children and adolescents.
Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury is similar in many ways to Traumatic Brain Injury in adult patients. The differences are directly related to the fact that kids and teens' brains are still developing. Despite the fact that these make for relatively minor differences, these differences lead to potentially significant varied outcomes.
We are dedicating this series on Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury to two amazing ladies, Amy who is a strong and intelligent brain injury warrior who was injured just before she turned 16 and continues to fight to rebuild herself...and her mom, Dana...a tenacious and compassionate caretaker who has fought against the medical system, the insurance companies, and even Amy sometimes, which is a fight that sometimes happens to all caretakers...we survivors can be challenging, ask any long term survivor survivor. ;-) Dana and Amy, or Damy have made a few videos with us and we encourage you to check them out.

    We don’t get into long term effects in this video…so developmental arrest or cognitive stall (depending on who you talk to ) is only briefly mentioned in passing in this video … more details in the next episode which will come later next month…

    I was injured at age seven, almost killed in a suitcase bombing. I'm just starting to watch this at 2 AM and will finish watching later today. Two things: 1. I hope you will discuss the neurocognitive stall. 2. I'm not an expert, and do not wish to trample upon your work, but I had always wondered why, according to the GCS, I wasn't that badly injured. Yet, my life was ruined. According to my neurologist - and I was not surprised to learn this - the GCS is becoming discredited. It is, after all, fifty years old, and neurology has learned a great deal since 1974. My neurologist said that the presence of delirium, now called "post traumatic confusion," is a much more ominous indicator. I was in delirium for three days.

      The GCS is a terrible method of categorizing TBIs…and certainly doesn’t reflect outcome…unfortunately, it’s still widely used by Emergency Physicians and Trauma Surgeons, who are primary gatekeepers…we do mention the fact that GCS is a poor system in other videos…but maybe we need to make a dedicated video…

    decapillarization due to TBI shifts metobolism from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis hence acidosis. the extreme acidosis of the brain in turn solubizes the minerals of the teeth, jaw and upper vertebrea. you are absolutely incompetent and completely ignorant. utterly insane.

    High fatty Omega 3 diet, no street drugs, aviod alcohol, app called Breath has helped me deal w anxiety resulting from head trauma when i have to deal with the daily drain. Any stress wears me out, then causes frustration then goes into exhaustion. My nervous system gets dysregulated frequently. Breathing exercises help tremendously.

    I had an event about two months ago. Effects: I don't have patience for BS as much as I used to before the event. I dont have tolerance for fake friends anymore after the event. It's harder for me to listen to someone talk BS. And I briefly started enjoying 1970s music like the Stylistics and Chicago - its like I could feel the soul in that music whereas before and now, not so much. And struggling with memory recall of names. though memory recall improving, I still can't tolerate listening to BS. I realized how good of a memory for names I used to have. Hopefully Jesus restores it all in good time.

    Is pseudomonas aeriginosa sepsis? I had that after a surgery , and have had horrendous leg aches since.. I’m 69. Also, my son had what i believe was meningoencephalitis at age 7, and his brain changed. His CNS became infected and he couldn’t walk right nor run that summer. He’sl had foot drop and seizures since then. He’s had several TBIs since, and headaches that he can’t get help for. He’s been diagnosed with autoimmune encephalopathy, and is on disability with anxiety and depression. He’s emotionally about 12. He’s is very sensitive to Lyme, mold, and his brain is messed up.? I’m going extra studying on this.

    • @detoursunderstandingacquir7282
      @detoursunderstandingacquir7282 13 днів тому

      P. Aeriginosa is the organism. Sepsis is a disorder caused by multiple organisms which release toxins into the blood streams causing multiple organs to fail. The term lots of people use is blood poisoning. Can this specific organism cause sepsis? Yes, it can. There are of course multiple factors that cause Sepsis, but it is, essentially an immune interaction with the toxins produced by the body...an overreaction I should say, but my point is that many bacteria, fungi, protesta, helminths, and of course, viruses can induce a septic reaction. Sorry about you and your son having been through so many acquired neurological disorders. There are many good books on neurology.

    I suffered heat exhaustion while teaching in Japan. I had just purchased a bike and was excited to not have to take the train. So I set off early and due to the fact that I had never ridden this route before I was unaware of the elevation change and the inclines involved (720 ft of elevation change but over half in the last half mile). It was also the middle of summer but I thought it would only be a matter of allotting time to cool off before my classes. I gave myself over an hour to cool off and hydrate but was still sweating profusely when my classes started. One of the adult students told me that that day set a new record high of something over 40ºC and suggested that I might have heat stroke. So I made use of my breaks to consume another 3 liters of water and electrolyte rich sports drinks. Things had cooled off substantially when I coasted down the mountain and then enjoyed the gentle slope the rest of the way home. I had heard heat stroke could be dangerous but I had no idea of the danger to the brain.

    Thank you for sharing the aspects of brain fog (from misty to pea soup) and what is dubbed neuro-fatigue. My wife still does not get my scenario that my hat is too tight or the split second ice pick to thru the skull. However, I am supposed to be compassionate with her migraines; hence the tension does build on a month to month basis. Hopefully, one day science will provide a helmet (like Magneto's) that quickly does a EEG and records the data. Until then, we banter about, "You are lucky that you do not have what I have."; thus the giggles start and provide some relief. In a future topic of video, please educate about acephalgic migraine and its relation to ABI. Neurology has not come far enough to embrace this situation and treatment is like playing roulette.

    When I was 30 years old I asked my 37 year older brother why he beat and tortured me so much. He said that when I hit 5 or 6 yrs old I was getting legitimate toys , money spent on me instead of him, he decided that I must die, so he attempted to kill me. That kinda sucked because in my mind he was the greatest. Hey my older brother who knew. When he died of cancer in his late 50s they found that he also had 3 brain tumors. His cancer was mesothelioma, likely from working as a mechanic. Then when I was 14 I fell off the side of a truck traveling over 50 mph. I'm 64 yrs old now, what can you do? Sometimes I think I'm intelligent, till I watch Jeopardy or hear someone who really is intelligent. Being 🤕🤯 is irritating 😶

    Thinking how you can ask someone what a friend or family members voice sounds like. Or John Wayne's voice, ora favorite actor or singer's voice. You can ask them about one voice after another and they can instantly think of how each person's voice sounds. How does our brain do that? Could an injury to the brain send that ability out of control and suddenly the person says their hearing voices.

    It is possible the person has the inability to understand their feelings. Mad, sad, scared, nervous all come out as mad. Cognitive behavioral therapy would help those people take a beat to sort through what is happening in the moment and what the feeling is they are actually feeling. Then the person with the TBI would use their big girl words “ I am sad” “ I am nervous” “I am mad” it is hard as hell to do but it can be done. If the person with the TBI has been diagnosed with flat affect, that is something that should be discussed with their Cbt

    Thank you for your informative videos. Currently trying to navigate my way back to being the happy, optimistic, upbeat person I was with positive energy and wisdom that I mentored others who were in difficult situations or crossroads in their lives along with just having intellectual and enlightening conversations on a daily basis. I was prescribed Clonazepam for sleep starting about 3 years ago and I was prescribed Clonazepam for 3 years straight. It worked great for me but had I known the dangers and horror stories of Benzodiazepines let alone that I found out after the fact that my former PCP was prescribing me 12 times (“1mg 3x daily as needed”, the doctor told me he wrote the prescription that way so I could “experiment with how much I needed to each night for sleep) the dose that the normal dose for sleep (.25mg) that every other doctor I’ve spoken with has shaken theirs heads in disbelief. Then to top that off I was cut off of Clonazepam cold turkey after being on 1-3mg daily for 3 years, and I was put on a cocktail of Seroquel, Buspar, Mirtazapine, and Depakote without any form of tapering from the Clonazepam which caused me to crash cognitively and emotionally because my body and my brain went into major withdrawals without me realizing what was happening to me and I ended up having an accidental overdose from my meds and ended up in a coma for a week. I’m not bipolar or psychotic especially since I was in the military for 21+ years with a security clearance which I wouldn’t have been able to obtain and maintain for 21+ years if I was bipolar or psychotic or had any sort of mental health issues. After my coma, the same doctor bumped me up from 50mg to 300mg of Seroquel which literally put me out of my mind and I haven’t been the same since then. Thankfully I was only on the Seroquel for a couple of months and realized how toxic and horrible the Seroquel was to my brain and my body. My last dose of Seroquel was about a year ago. How long does it really take for a person’s brain and motor functioning (Tardive Dyskinesia, ticks, stuttering, cognitive impairment (I used to be extremely talented musically and as a chef, now I can barely cook eggs), inability to have or interact in intellectual conversations, mood swings that I never had before the Clonazepam or Seroquel, always bitter angry frustrated depressed, etc). The list goes on and on. If I remember correctly you had done a video or perhaps a couple of videos on acquired / toxic brain injuries from meds such as Benzodiazepines and / or Antipsychotics which is how I found your UA-cam channel. If you could please provide me and perhaps others with further insight into the dangers and precautions with toxic medications like Benzodiazepines and Seroquel / Antipsychotics since there seems to be an increasing number of so called doctors who are handing out prescriptions for these types of medications like they’re candy, and they are ruining people’s lives which unfortunately end up ending in suicide for a lot of people. I never was provided “Informed Consent” about Clonazepam / Benzodiazepines or about Seroquel not supposed to be used off label for sleep, etc. These are major issues that need to be addressed especially since Protracted Withdrawal from Benzodiazepines especially Clonazepam is a form of Chemical / Toxic Brain Injury! And the same goes for Antipsychotics being handed out like candy because now the new go to diagnosis (instead of someone going through the loss of a loved one, or a rough patch in life that hit you out of the blue like in my case) is YOU’RE BIPOLAR. I went to another physician to be examined for something completely different from anything psychological and within 10 minutes of me talking with her, she opens her desk drawer and pulls out a sample box of Vraylar (Antipsychotic Med) and says I think you’re bipolar and conveniently has sample boxes / packets of readily available in her desk drawer?!?! This all needs to be addressed in detail so others like myself can be better informed about this new fad amongst so many so called medical professionals. And I along with many others out there would like to know how long does it really take to get back to being our normal selves after discontinuing these horrible and toxic meds. Articles online say within a few weeks but I’m finding interviews and testimonies that a lot of the after effects of Benzodiazepines and Antipsychotics can and often last for years even after only being on them for a short period of time relatively speaking. If you haven’t already addressed these meds and the topics and horror stories affiliated with them, I think it would be a very helpful and beneficial video series for you to create content on in great detail so we have a better understanding of what to expect after being exposed to these horrible medications and how long is the path to truly fully healing and recovering from these medications and any other medications you deem worthy to address so people are properly informed prior to being prescribed these medications along with other dangerous medications out there that are being prescribed for the actual intended purpose of the medications and their off label black box warning uses / prescriptions being so carelessly handed out by doctors, nurse practitioners who think they’re full blown psychiatrists, and other people in the medical community just negligently ruining people’s lives and in some cases killing their patients physically and mentally and emotionally and their inner spirit and joy for life itself.
