It's not always the stepper motor causing the problem. There is an O-ring that is on the oil pickup tube in the oil pan, When the O-ring fails it will have loss of oil pressure. When I got my truck it always ran at 35 psi at idle and 70 mph, Lol and one day while driving it went down to 5 psi and the motor started ticking and after towing it home. when I pulled the drain pan and the pickup tube the O-ring was broke in 3 spots. after replacing the O-ring it now runs 40 psi at idle and 66 psi at 70 mph.

I have a 95 chevy k1500 tbi. Recently did oil change nd started doing the same thing once truck was hot. The oil pressure drops when im at a stop and picks up to below 40 when i accelerate. I changed oil pressure switch and that didnt work. Now there is a buzzing sound coming from the cluster. I went the expensive route and changed the oil pump (fresh full synthetic 10-30 oil as well) but still having the same issue. Note: the engine was rebuilt about 40k miles ago. Next I'm replacing the oil pressure switch pig tail. Im almost thinking it's gonna be a bad cluster. My truck runs great btw. Anyone with opinions or ideas would be appreciated.

It’s also worth a try to do an engine flush. I had a problem where my oil pressure was starting normal, then soon falling to zero(ish), shut down and restart and the pressure again went to normal, then fell soon afterwards. I consulted the oracle that is UA-cam and this exact problem was fixed with a Liquid Molly motor flush. ***provided you aren’t getting bad noises*** it’s worth a try before putting time and money into a repair

So I have a 2012 Chevy Silverado. My oil pressure goes from a little under 40 to close to 20 oil pressure after a few minutes running. I’ve changed the oil pressure sensor, changed the filter to the sensor, and replaced the o-ring on the pickup tube. Still doing the same thing goes from around 40 to 20 oil pressure. Engines making no sounds and no sludge or anything in the pan. I am lost lol

On my 06 avalanche 5.3 the oil pressure gauge is doing the same thing. I replace oil pressure sensor and oil pick up oring and that didn’t fix it. I check oil pressure with manual gauge connect to the engine and it reads 20 psi at idle and it doesn’t have no engine noise. Could it a bad oil pump or bad camshaft bearings

I have a 04 gmc yukon xl the gauge at cold start goes to 40 then when warm drops to 20 and idle below 20 but when running down the highway it will go almost to 40lbs is that a bad pump or what could cause that because my engine runs great no knock or lack of horsepower but i would like to know before i blow it up on accident lol

Well I just got done riding in a 1987 1500 5.7. The engine was making all kinds of sounds coming off the highway. I told the guy driving which I do maintenance on his apartments and was his 87 year old dads truck he was driving that somthing was very wrong. Pulled into the service station and pulled the dipstick, There was nothing. I told him to go into the store get 2 bottles of oil. Dumped them in pulled the dipstick still nothing. Told him to go back in get 2 more bottles. Dumped a 3rd bottle in. Pulled the dipstick and was barley nothing. Put the 4th bottle in and was full. Started the engine and it was quiet and running good. How the hell that damn thing did not seize up is beyond me. Even starting it up only a small puff of oil smokes comes out. There was damage done but very little. I practically did a full oil change minus the filter in a gas station parking lot.

There are videos for it. You need the special socket that fits over the unit (spark plug socket won't work) after you undo the electrical connector. Universal joint and variety of extensions are helpful. You likely don't have a screen under the sending unit (2007 and newer with AFM have those). I've changed mine twice.

Oil pump pickup tube o-ring needs to be replaced! They get smashed during installation on the assembly line. Once they get some miles on them they look pressure by. A dead giveaway of this problem is when you start the truck and it stays below 40 and you hit the gas and oil psi doesn't move very much. Hope this helps?

It is 80 at idle (aka always 80?) Could be a bad oil pressure sender unit (if you have 2007 or newer, could be a dirty screen below the oil pressure sender unit), could be bad stepper motor, especially if the gauge goes to the 6 o'clock position. It just depends.

I wonder if anyone can help me. Ive been having thesame issues with my 310,454 mileage 2012 gmc Sierra sle 5.3L. I've changed the oil pressure sensor, new wires, new plugs, new alternator, new battery, new head gaskets. The timing tensioner was broken so i replaced the timing chain and tensioner. I also replaced the o ring on the pick up tube inside the oil pan. I also had a collapsed lifter that i had replaced. My voltage meter starts up and goes to 14 volts like it should. While I'm driving it goes down to 10 volts and pretty much remains there until i shut it off. Now after all the work that was done to it, i start it up and put it into drive and it stalls. I'm still having low oil pressure troubles as well. Can anyone tell me what i can do to fix this truck?

I have the same problem! I already replaced the oil pump and pickup tube along with the time chain on my 02 Chevy Avalanche 5.3l! I still have lift noise and my gauge fluctuates. It starts at 40 and then ends up at 20! I need a solution!!!!!
