Thanks for another great video Peter, I was just getting ready to prune my 2 largest maples, a few hundred trees now and it's getting hard to keep up with them, lots of JBP need to be shaped before they get too thick.
@@steveanacorteswa3979 the 4in sounds fine. You're a 2½ hour drive from me. I'm near Tacoma. I will give the heads up when I plan a road trip to pick up a flat or two.
I'm in Texas USA, our temperatures have been over a 100° Fahrenheit for a couple weeks now and the couple maples that I have are just struggling to live. Is there a maple suited for a hot dry climate? They seem so fragile once the weather heats up. Amazing work you do!
Even in San Francisco we sometimes get hot dry weather. My friend's collection then went under shade cloth, and she watered two or three times a day when we had those conditions.
Any general purpose insecticide will do! Dont overspray and only do it in the evening! Alternatively you can use soap solution, vaseline or just rib the blighters off with your fingers!
If you can make a cutting from that unusual tree, I'll be more than happy to buy from you. I recently got 5 maples from you and succeeded in killing one so far 😂
Peter i have a question alot of my maples this year have suffered from leaf burn and all the leafs have dried out what is the best method to do to help these trees get their leafs back?

The tree at 6:30, is it a grafted cultivar? You mentioned propagating the cuttings, but I have heard with grafted cultivars that it typically isn’t possible. Curious to know if there are some which it is possible even if they were grafted?
I've heard the same, like the roots aren't as strong/healthy etc. But He's done quite a few videos of cultivars that he's grown rooted cuttings from. He also has quite a few cultivar maple bonsai for sale on the website, that I'm assuming are not grafted.
Hello Peter, I enjoy watching your videos and they inspired me starting Bonsai. Unfortunately my backyard is a quiet shady place. Which outdoor bonsai species do you recommend in this case? Thanks in advance and best regards from Berlin/Germany, Joern
First thing coming to mind would be yew, if the poison is no concern. But generally look at plants naturally growing inside forests, in understory conditions beneath the canopy of taller trees. E.g. hornbeam might be another good candidate. Even vigorous Japanese maple cultivars (or the original wild form) could do o.k., avoid red or lace leaf or dwarf varieties, though.
I have a very difficult nursery stock hupps Japanese maple that I could really use help with just getting into bonsai so really at a basic level want to air layer and make two out of it because it is got a long straight base really wondering how well they respond to air layering and what would be the best time of year to do it
Peter would it be possible for you to tell us or better still print the date in a corner of your video so we know what time of year to do certain tasks you are undertaking, it would prevent us making drastic mistakes at the wrong time of year. Thank you.

Japanese maples dont like the heat and dry atmosphere and they need freezing temps in winter to do well.

Beautiful work! What do you use to spray for the scale disease?

Some of the conifers may tolerate shade and some like Camellia like to be grown in shade - but as a rule all plants need sunlight to grow well
