This must be one of the best video's from Herons I have watched about Maples in a long time although I did hear Peter say that Deshojo Maples can be hard to grow from seed but I have bought Deshojo seeds from Herons on two occasions, the last was in late 2023 and on both occasions I have had from 98-100 % germination rate so these seeds are worth buying from Herons as they are fresh picked at the right time of year and is much better than just buying from some sites on the internet that may be questionable at best.
This video is great. I agree growing those maples from seed is so easy. I tried after one of your videos. There's a Japanese maple in a local park. I picked seeds from that tree three times in autumn. I put them in a pot and let them outside all winter. You can get hundreds of seedlings from a hand full of seeds. It's really fun. While I admire the big old trees I found that growing trees from seed is what I enjoy most. I only bought very few trees and never enjoy them as much as the ones I grew myself. It does take a long time but I came to enjoy even the very young trees. The maples already look great after two years.
Thank you Peter for the education on growing Japanese maple bonsai. Now I know what to do with all my maple seeds. I growing them on the ground first to produce a thicker trunk quicker and then pot them in a large pot. Just bought some seeds on a white willow tree, let hope it will germinate, fingers crossed. I never seen a white willow tree before so I decided to bit the bullet and see what happened. Take care and stay healthy, Peter, and thank you for the lecture on Japanese Maple.🙏🙏🙏
From seedling to mature maple...and everything in between. There are countless lessons contained within this video. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and lifetime of experience with those of us who wish to learn. It was a pleasure meeting you at the nursery yesterday. I'm the one who has transitioned to mame and shohin sized trees...and shared a photo of my large azalea in full bloom. Appreciate you taking time to speak with me and hope you find your way to Vermont when you next visit the US.
My Maples are suffering from the cold and persistent winds this year plus the constant rainfall damping off seedlings! I don’t have a poly tunnel in which to protect them but do my best in cold frames!
After several decades of bonsaï practice, I could not agree more: for our climat zone (Western Europe; I live in the Netherlands) you should not overestimate Akadama soil. Nothing wrong with it, but do not overestimate it. It may be great for example in Japan, with its rainy seasons, but those are really different circumstances. But, I do use it as a part of my mixtures. By the way: it is my strong belief that drainage is by far the most important when you put small (and young) trees in small pots. Furthermore: Akadama soil is quite expensive these days and I have learned that the price in Japan is about one third of the prices in our regions... There is no need to make your hobby more expensive then necessary, I think... Even more: I think that bonsaï is (or can be) one of the most cheap hobbies. I salute you, mr. Chan, keep up the good works!
Oh my so many beautiful maples 😮. I purchased a trident maple that was 3 years old around 2018 from a bonsai show and i just put it in a 10 L pot and just let it go and trim back its done geeat this year i will put it into a 50L pot and let it be

Just do it and start today! It doesn't matter what you use as starting material as long as you don't start with seed. Not for your first bonsai, at least. Good luck
A miniature clove with small vibrant yellow flowers has seeded itself into my maple bonsai pots. The flower opens when it is sunny and is in a beautiful proportion for my trees.

Yes! Enjoyed the video thoroughly, what is meant by “garden compost” , does consist only of compost or a bit of soil too? Please make that video on akadama that you are planning to, thank you ❤
We compost our leaves and that is the basis of our garden compost - there is a soil mix called John Innes No 2 (There is 1;2 &3) look it up on Google or /Wiki
Thank you! I do have a question: when is the best time of year to dig up 'field grown' trees? I have 5 I have been clipping and caring for for several years that 'volunteered' in my yard - about thumb thickness now. Do I dig them up now (late spring) or wait for winter?
such a nice and informative video for the Maple fans. But sad part is that, this is uploaded in max 720p format. 1080p not available to enjoy the beauty of these maples in High Resolution ☹😭
how in the world do you keep all of this watered? Even aside from all the beautiful bonsais, all the trays and up potted seedlings etc. in every crack and crevasse of your beautiful property. do you water a lot of it manually by hand?
Hello Peter Chan , Namaste Sir. Maples are one of my favorite plants. As you are familiar with India regions, I like to ask you one thing. Can we grow maple (or any particular verity of it) in Southern part of India ?? Or its impossible to grow any type of maple here in South India ??
Im from Philippines, i buy some kind of variety of maples, but only one variety suit on Philippines climate is "trident maple" i have a question its because the "trident maple" was native of all varieties of maple?
I am confused. I live in an area that regularly stays below freezing during the winter. He said that frost will hurt Japanese maples. I have 4 Japanese maples on my property and they are totally fine with very cold temps here. What does he mean?
@briangallagher3106 I had a pod land in a seedling pot that I was trying to grow a flower in. The flower seed didn't germinate and grow, but 3 maple trees did about a month ago.
Another amusing thing people do a lot that is unnecessary is they insist on using a chop stick to poke in the soil. Any stick will do. It doesn't have to be a chop stick because chop sticks are Asian.
They are handy, just about the right size for the repotting job and I just got a new bunch for free after a good meal. Just wash of the left over sushi and there you go!

Does Bonsai work on any tree? I typically find baby maples and baby oaks growing in my yard. I'd like to Bonsaie them, if possible.
You can definitely make an oak bonsai. I have some saplings growing right now

Try Trident maple
Ok.. but we dont find trident maple here on online plant nurseries !!
How do you know when to take the seed's? Do you simply wait for them to fall? Or do you grab them just before that point?
Wait till all the leaves have fallen- where we live this is in early or mid November
The organic soil in the mix, will it grow better in it?
Yes
Wow. Wonderful Video. Respect. STP
Dear Peter what gravel is that at around 5:00? Thanks!
Its calle Silver grey granite 10-17mm size
A superlative video.
So, now is the time right cut the new growth that been growing since early spring? Or wait till june? Anyone plz respond. Prune now or wait?
Cut soft shoots off in April but thick branches are best cut in early June
When do you pluck your maples?
Maple seeds are collected in November
What kind of soil is used in the pots? Just the soil from the ground? or do you use a potting mix?
It never is just the soil from the ground. A mixture of potting mix and course sand and/or split is good.
