Having recently progressed to having a handful of refined trees, I've been thinking about pinching my spruce this spring. This video helped clarify the logic and process behind it for me. Excellent information!
Another amazing video at exactly the right time. Without a word of a lie I was looking at all my pines today, and getting quite confused as to what to do. I had such a variety of differing candle growth from tree to tree and within the same tree. There was so much potential for me to take disastrous action. I now feel totally confident as to what needs to be done to each tree. Perhaps, most importantly I now know that I need to do nothing to my little Mugo on which I have never before seen such an even distribution of same size tiny candles. Thanks Ryan.
Great point on defoliation, people just starting have ruined lot's of tree's! Even here in the sub tropic's, I only partially strip 1or 2 branches at a time. For maintaining control of outward growth and leaf size! Great info Ryan!👌👍Port Charlotte,Fl.🇺🇸

Can you do a lecture on de-candling JBP in June/July please? 🙏 I know you've said in past lectures to, "just cut them all off!" But, would love to hear the intricacies, byproducts, after-effects and details of it all. I’m in SoCal… so we have a longer growing season (so, not too early like elsewhere... I hear July 4th is best for SoCal).
TY! I did have some confusion about "stimulating" backbuds in pines by pinching, and also around building foliage mass in redwoods, via pinching, to cause backbuds
In over 30 years I've never got a JWP to back bud from pinching, what does produce lots of buds is post flush hardening I cut back to the silhouette and heavily feed the tree so as it goes into late summer and autumn it's in energy positive and then I get lots of buds. Then the following spring I can cut back to those buds if I so wish. And don't get me started on pinching junipers.... only pinch the elongating tips... it's obvious when you see it but so many people rip all the tips off junipers thinking they are keeping the growth back when they are actually killing the tree.
On my white pine I pinched last week. But I’m not shear if I did it to soon because it had some mini pine cone’s on it. This video explains my issues that I had so well

Bonsai is a hobby to me, and I'm a busy guy, so I might only be able to watch a video or 2 per month. So if it's a subscription model(which I think it is right?), I hope it isn't a waste. Might still be worth it, depending on cost. I'll have to check it out.
I invested in the subscription 2 years ago and watch about 2 or 3 a month. No regrets at all. The range of subjects he covers allows me to benefit with the trees I currently have. It has changed my entire approach to bonsai and allowed me to 'undo' a lot of book learnt assumptions. Go for it.
Since I've only begun watching your classes and I feel like I'm in a class with my most favorite professor. jejejeje So when you talk about pinching you are talking about pines. Does this also apply to leafed species like cotoneaster or jabuticaba or ficus?
the past few years in the east coast, we have seen natural defoliation take place due to gypsy moth sweep hitting the north east. They will kill an evergreen in one year with total defoliation, but the deciduous come back with tiny bonsai leaves. it was funny to see huge white oaks with tiny leaves like a tree in show. But no tree will survive two years. Trees seem to evolve second flushes in response the evolution of moths as a genera.
Your videos are golden! I learn so much. I was wondering, while you are developing your Primary, Secondary and Tertiary branches, do you utilize pinching to achieve short, tight internodes or is the only way to control this internode through lack of nitrogen? If so what’s a good NPK Ratio for that and what season? Thank you for your Educated Wisdom

Agree but for the cigarette. He was getting so excited at one stage I turned the playbackspeed down to 90%, this Brit can't follow a very speedy US accent.
So the needle size wasn’t brought up. Info out there about decandling at a certain length so only the shorter needles grow.. You talk about the small root system in akadama mirroring the needles size. So disregard what they say so you aren’t working in circles always trying to decandle everything?

now I realize you gotta build all the other underlying structure and scaffolding etc, and have the density for refinement. makes sense!
