I don't think most people saw it coming. I think most people assumed (like Dorothy and Rose) that she was talking about an interracial relationship, considering the time and place when she was an adolescent.
Among some of the best writing of the series, and in sitcom history. And way Blanche says ''I went to my senior prom with a YANKEE'' between the accent, body language , and expression is brilliant. And the Dorothy turns around, ''And to think they made a movie about that deadbeat Ghandi'' I lost it !! Top of the line writing and acting !
Haha I know... there's several episodes like that.... I remember one episode where a lady in the audience was screaming from laughter.... I think one of my favorite parts is the actor episode where they all dated the actor.... and then they realized later and were at home and they were sitting in the living room and rose said " I feel so cheap... so USSSEDD... How do you usually deal with that Blanche?" 🤣
Haha! It's funny how I haven't noticed his laughter until I saw your comment. Haha! The first time I watched this episode, think I laughed the same way as him.
It’s the studio audience reaction to Blanche saying ‘Benjamin wasn’t black, he was from New Jersey’ Being a Brit I didn’t know where this was going and the amounts of times I’ve googled situations that arose from the writing from the has been numerous, educating me on American civilisation!
I went to my senior prom with a Yankee!! My absolute favourite GG moment. That and “you should never sell a car or a slave to a friend, coz if one of them stops working you will never hear the end of it”
Hey I know it's been a year since you posted this comment but please tell me what episode that was. I used all my witt ever since I came across your comment but I cant find the episode.
After discovering this scene a million years later, I had to have watched it a million times , and is hysterical each time I watch it. The facial, expressions Blanche makes. Black? He was a yankee! Lol And then they touched looks on rose and dorothys face makes it that much funnier as even rose is thinking, is she serious?
This was very well executed. Using the unreliable narrator approach, painting the image and carried out the punchline well. Good writing and good acting.
Amazing hilarious scene. Blanche builds up this story and Dorothy's reaction makes me bust out laughing because the whole story is soo stupid ...A yankee... a yank??? That is incred... incredible.... LMAO... And to think this story hasn't been told... more people need to know about it. LOL LOL
Omg I am seeing this scene for the first time ever, and just when I thought Dorothy and Blanches words they would say at each other eulogies, when that day were to happen and Blanche says all these insulting things acting as if they were compliments where Dorothy gets up and says, and I would also say......you were fat lol. But this may be my numero uno now. Lol
Hahah, but did they seriously think Blanche went to her senior prom with a blank person when most schools at the time Blanche was in high school weren’t even integrated? Come on, ladies 😂
Even though you can see what is coming, it's still hilarious. Especially the way she says YANKEE
I don't think most people saw it coming. I think most people assumed (like Dorothy and Rose) that she was talking about an interracial relationship, considering the time and place when she was an adolescent.
I for one saw it coming, well not necessarily a yankee but I knew that he wasn’t going to be black
I dont understand...whats wrong with yankee
@@faridahadah4471 You aren't from the south I take it!
@@amariah1980 no I'm not from usa...I'm from Asia...but I do know that once there's a civil war in usa
This was simply brilliant. Excellent writing and exceptional acting .
Absolutely agreed.
I went to my senior prom with a YANKEE!!! LMAO!! The BEST Blanche story ever!!
I have watched this scene so many times but the way Blanche delivered this story always cracked me up 🤣 "Blaaack? 😮🙄 ...etc"
And he was from Nuh Juhsee.
'And to think they made a movie about that deadbeat Ghandi, while there is a story like this that has not been told.'
This episode won an Emmy Award in 1986 for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. Well deserved!
I can certainly see why it won! One of my favorite GG episodes!
i love the way she tells this story ,the word black was not even use, but the way she said certain people were not to mix lol lol
Part of me kinda wished the guy acually was black but I still love this scene
@@the_responder3948 me too

I must have scene this thousands of times, but it never fails to make me howl with laughter!
Idk what’s more brilliant. Rue’s delivery of the punchline or Bea going from shocked to sarcasm in a blink. This scene and these women are legend.
"I went to my senior prom with YANKEE!"
LOL 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Blanche I'm dying!!!
Rue's delivery of the words "black" and "yankee" are nothing short of incomparably brilliant!
To think that Rue wasn't a real southerner... Her accent is fantastic
@natalie storm Oklahoma is MIDWEST not south.
@@amariah1980 Not really. Not according to the Census Bureau, anyway.
@@andrewh5136 People from Texas and Oklahoma say midwest.
@@amariah1980 They are wrong. Anything south of the Mason-Dixon line is SOUTHERN.
No she talks more like a black person than a white southerner and it feels fake!!!
“I went to my senior prom with a *YANKEH!”*
THE funniest GG scene of all time.
That guy laughing in the background just makes this scene all the more perfect and funnier!

Haha! It's funny how I haven't noticed his laughter until I saw your comment. Haha! The first time I watched this episode, think I laughed the same way as him.
I laugh tilI cry every time I see this! So funny and the timing is perfect!
The way this punchline was written and served alone destroys half the comedy shows out there today.

Blanche, my favourite one. Great performance!
I went to my senior prom with a YANKEE!
the show was so ahead of its time...only one of the few tv shows with each star getting an emmy...
Along with All in the Family, Will & Grace and Schitts Creek. 👌💪
What’s funny about her story is that it’s actually true about the tension between the North and South!
BLACK?!
The way she says “Black?!” Always gets me!
This was very well executed. Using the unreliable narrator approach, painting the image and carried out the punchline well. Good writing and good acting.

Hilarious! I’ve watched it multiple times. 😂
The way she says Yankee 🤣😭
I'm not happy that the title completely gives the joke away.
'BLACK!?'
RIP Betty White
My all time favorite...
My favorite golden girls clip.
2016 and am still lol
Same in 2021.
Similar situation remember man of the cloth
A yankee lol😂😂😂😂
The guy guffawing at 1:34 is hilarious
Could you change the title of the clip? Maybe "Blanch's prom story"? The title gives away the punch line.
Perfection! 🤣🤣👍

Rose (Minnesota) and Dorothy (New York) grew up in the North, which did not have segregation.
