That first story actually has behind-the-scenes history on it. The take they used was from the dress rehearsal. When they tried to film it again for the actual episode, they found that the genuine laughter from Betty, Bea, and Rue made it sink in that, despite their differences, they were good roommates for each other and decided to keep the original, guffaws and all. Actually, Betty White (like the late Tim Conway of The Carol Burnett Show fame) came up with the stories on the fly most of the time. "The Great Herring War" is legendary, because it was the very first time and Bea and Rue were legit trying to mess her up mid story. A lot of respect happened in the mere minutes of filming that scene.
Rue McClanahan was being interviewed and they asked her why she thought the show was so successful and she replied, "We had impeccable writers!" And so they did! Personally, I think it's the second most successful comedy sit-com ever, the first being, of course, "I Love Lucy!" I have a feeling that no TV sit-com will ever come along which can beat those two!!
Betty white was such a treasure .. the chemistry between all the actresses was pure gold. The herring and tuna story were the funniest bits.. classic how the other cast members tried to keep a straight face through these bits.. such a talent Betty white was and what a perfect ensemble

You knew what was coming but still so good
Because it was delivered so perfectly and on time, that’s why these ladies were talented and funny they knew how to deliver
When TV was worth watching, how I miss these ladies.
I hear you on that.
They still come on every night. I'm watching them right now on Hallmark channel.
@@lizziepie3442 I bought the whole series on DVD from Amazon. Had to send them back because they wouldn't play on my DVD player. I'm going to check Barnes & Noble and see if I can buy them at one of their stores. I bought the first season DVDs there and they play fine. Some of the Amazon sellers aren't too reputable.
Betty White was the oldest among her castmates it's a blessing to still have her around
;)
LOL...she still is the oldest on HIC.
Happy 98th birthday, Betty Marion White Ludden!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I think Bea Arthur was born the same year.... 1922. RIP BA, EG & RM🌹
Bea, Estelle, and Betty were all in their early sixties at the start of the show. Rue was in her late fifties.
When writers could make us belly laugh without swearing or sex. True genius.
For real
Betty can make us belly laugh with swearing/sex too. She waa a comedic genius.
Btw the way, I heard she was off script during the whole herring circus.
A lot of times, Betty would go off script. She just knew she could make the other two break character. And keep a straight face!
Sex was a regular joke on the show
I want a T-Shirt that says: "I've kept these bitter butter memories too long!"
Ooooh I know someone who could make that for you!
Oh Lord, I'm snort-laughing imagining what that would even look like.
Ha Ha!
I never got Blanche's part of being Olivia De haviland until I saw Gone with the Wind.
Oh, I may have to get one now. Great idea!
So Bea and Rue's hysterical shrieks of laughter.... that was all them.
Thanks for sharing!
You can see Rue struggling before Betty even starts the story.
What a great bts story! It's definitely one of my favorite moments in the entire series. RIP Betty White 💔
@@lakecountynaturalist7617 I feel like living with someone like Rose Nylund would prep you or you'd start laughing because you know they're about to say something ridiculous
I knew their laughter was genuine. No control there !!
Never broke character once.
Like a boss.
Agreed.
I can never get enough of the Golden Girls.......together in Heaven at last 😄
🧡💚
Rose is the most innocent bean 😂😂😂😘😘
And wonderful
Betty White is great
How does she do the wide eyed innocence and keep a straight face while doing this?
Because she is a master!
@@StayGoldenGirls I know, right?
Totes
Betty White was born with a 'poker face'..I bet she would be amazing at poker playing as well! But notice how she & Rowan Atkinson was able to not laugh in the face of comedy? That's enormous self-control..it takes years to train for that.. 😊!
Brilliant brilliant actress! They all have been amazing.
Whoever came up with these stories deserves an award! In 2019 they're still hilarious! These ladies are comedy icons.
I hear you on that!
Rue McClanahan was being interviewed and
they asked her why she thought the show was
so successful and she replied, "We had impeccable writers!" And so they did! Personally, I think it's the second most successful comedy sit-com ever, the first being, of course, "I Love Lucy!" I have a feeling that no TV sit-com will ever come along which can beat
those two!!
This was all ad libbed by Betty White herself...
Betty white was such a treasure .. the chemistry between all the actresses was pure gold. The herring and tuna story were the funniest bits.. classic how the other cast members tried to keep a straight face through these bits.. such a talent Betty white was and what a perfect ensemble
Thank you for sharing!
The look on Sophia's face while rose tells these stories always cracks me up. Sophia was always my favorite 😂
Yes!
Lol 😆 she is trying to picture it
“When I think of my father I always picture him pulling a giant tuna up Main Street.”
“Well who doesn’t Rose?”
YES!!! Gosh I love that tuna story
Ahh, wonderful memories of dear old dad!
"Oh not a real tuna this one was made of flowers. It was for the float for founders day"
You have quoted dialogue from the clip.
I didn't want to go to work. But after watching this, I think I can do it.
I believe in you so much. And you know what, Rose absolutely 100% believes in you too.
The thing for me is when I finish the work. I work in a hotel betwen a lake, and sometimes I watch over the window and say to myself: "God, why this lake don't have some piranha in it? I am vegetarian so I will be like a salat with meat for them, a full happy meal."
I agree Iam at work watching this
Thats believable I gotta go to court & it calmed me a bit 😂
How Betty kept a sraight face through those stories is a credit to her.
so good
I don't know which is funnier Rose's stories or Dorthy & Blanche's reactions to the story.
Really a tie there! I think for me, depends on the mood I am in when I watch it.
Right. I don't know which is funnier.
Both have my stomach in knots!!!
The way the cast has to hide their laughing while she goes on.
So good.
“ Bitter butter memories” always cracks me up. I don’t understand it.
;)
What I find amazing is how rose can say those extremely hard names so fast
♥️
She was for the Golden Girls what Tim Conway was for The Carol Burnett Show!
Perhaps
Not quite! There are times that you could see Tim trying not to laugh.
Vorrei imparare l'italiano, EXACTLY what I was thinking.
@Chris Hancock lol!
I believe so
"A week later we became Lutherans!" 🤣👌🏻
Boom!
One wonders whether or not the reverand getting killed by the war hero For infidelity had anything to do with it
"this lone little mayonnaise jar...dragging this giant tuna up the hill..past the viewing stand...I don't think I've been prouder in MY LIFE"
Such a wonderful image.
This was my favorite story on Golden Girls. The Tuna story...
Lol!!!
Betty does her part so well. It’s hard not to laugh.❤
💜
R.I.P. Betty White ~ What a shock that she passed away today (12/31/2021) at the age of 99. Only weeks from celebrating her 100th birthday! Not only Betty was our National Treasure, she was a GLOBAL TREASURE. She blessed us all with her quick humor and her rememberable characters. May she make all the angels and God laugh thunderously and smile brightly in Heaven.
💜💜💜💜💜
Oh please. There is no god. Grow up. 🙄
@@j.h.6633: Thank you we need to remind these imbecilic believers!!!
Was it really a shock?
@@j.h.6633 Opinions vary.
The actors were trying so hard not to laugh, but they cracked up anyway
Because it is too damn funny.
I loved her since I was a little girl. When she passed it was like losing a grandmother.
Her delivery was impeccable. And her ability to tell a joke without laughing was amazing.
❤️❤️❤️
RIP Betty White - Thank you for being a friend - *One silver lining is now younger generations will discover this sensational show.
Legend
How in the world they all kept a straight face is amazing. I’m cracking up just watching these clips. RIP dearest Rose of St Olaf. You will be greatly missed. All the Golden Girls are together again. ❤️
I hear you on that
I think they lost it on the first story.
I still watch this show every morning. One can only take the news for so long. These women put a smile on my face even during the pandemic.
I agree! Good way to spend the morning with the GG
Good bless Rose and the golden girls. Whenever I see them I cry from
Laughter !!!!
❤️
It's like when we watched (or watch) Carol Burnett 🤣
❤️
The first scene, it feels like they legit were breaking out of character while Betty White was just saying random shit
It just touched them.
Actually, they were! Bea Arthur herself stated that many of the St Olaf stories Betty White came up with on the fly. No one had heard "The Great Herring War" story at all until they filmed the scene.
@@Panwere36 If that's true, then my respect for Betty White (which was already pretty high) just went up a couple of notches.
@@302Diane , Bea Arthur said it was, and both Rue and Estelle never challenged it. I would say that is all the confirmation needed, IMHO.
@@Panwere36 My apologies. I realize that sounded like I was doubting you and that wasn't my intention. I do believe it. Betty White is one of the most creative people I've ever heard of.
"He was also the only sophomore old enough to get into a bar." How the hell did Betty White keep a straight face during even half of her lines? 😂
:)
I noticed that line too lol
@Robbie13 I caught it HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!! The best one yet is St. Olaf's "MEANEST VENTRLOQUIST" The look on Roses face when she told that story. Oh She heard voices every night at 10-9 Central LOL!!!
@Robbie13
You have to be 21 years old to get in to a bar? Really?
No wonder I didn't realise it was supposed to be a joke.
Robbie13 back when her character was young the drinking age was younger. He probably was just 18. Mind you, an 18yr old sophomore is still funny. 😆
"Oh.... shut up Rose!" The frustration in Blanche's voice at that moment always cracks me up! 🤣🤣🤣😭😭
So good!
Makes me think they allowed this one to be made up and Rue cue was genuine reaction.
R.I.P. Betty...we'll miss you forever and you will always be in our hearts...broke the mold with you 💔.
💜💜
How did ROSE CONSTANTLY hold it together when everyone was cracking up.SHES remarkable ..
Boss
She was so serious about that herring war story and the way Dorothy responded was hilarious. lol the possibilities are overwhelming!
;)
"St Olaf's MEANEST ventriloquist..." ROFLMAO
Which means there was a nice one somwhere!
@@StayGoldenGirls --exactly! That's what I call writing! ;)
Lol
9 Central
That one was worth the wait
There will never be another Betty White. How she managed to keep a straight face is amazing. She has got to be in Heaven keeping everyone laughing. Love you Betty White!!!😘😘
👍💜💜
"Every Tuesday night at 10 ..... 9 Central" 😂😂😂😂
Janelle Overton St Olaf is in the central time zone, saying eastern first is a bit strange
Why? They are in Miami. So it's east-time?!
:)
@@christianjust2654 yea ik, im just quoting what Rose said at 12:51
Golden girls Saturdays nights on NBC network from 1985-1992
These are some good ones! I liked the story about her new neighbours, the eskimos, and how they saved St. Olaf during the drought when their igloo melted! Good to see you again!
We are probably going to do a part two!
I love the St Olaf story of everyone in the town dressed up like SANDWICHES..... Rose and Charlie forgot to put the slice of CHEESE BETWEEN themselves.... 9 months later was Kirsten!!! Lol😆😆😆😆
Thank you for sharing!!
That was in my top 5 i love that one too
"All of our children were conceived on special St Olaf holidays..." Adam was during the princess pig festival during the pig crowning, and Genella was during hay day..... that's when "we St Olafians celebrate...... hay"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This show never gets old lol😂

So true !!!!!
